July Recap

After the mess that was June July was a much better month. I still had a lot going on, mainly with work but also with YALC which was the last weekend of the month, but I managed to post one of my new features I was planning to launch, which is one more than I managed last month. I reviewed eight books this month, and most of them were amazing reads which when it comes down to it is pretty much all I look for in books.

Monthly Recaps - This Month

Books I Reviewed

July Recap '17, #1 (1)

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

Unfortunately this was a little bit of a disappointment for me, but not as much as it could have been because I saw some mixed reviews for The Love Interest before picking it up myself.

Legend Trilogy

I started the Legend trilogy back in 2014 and now, three years later, I’ve finally finished it. This was an incredible series, and now I am that much more excited to get around to Lu’s other books.

Legend by Marie Lu

Prodigy by Marie Lu

Champion by Marie Lu

Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser

Another anticipated release of mine that I’d hoped for a little more from. Song of the Current was an amazing book, but it was just missing that spark that would have made it incredible.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

If I were to pick one book that I’d say was my favourite read of July it would be this one. The Gentleman’s Guide was amazing, bringing to mind My Lady Jane with its unique humour.

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

My favourite part of this book, asides from Eliza’s character development, was Zappia’s take on fandom. I love reading books that talk about fandoms, and have ever since I read Fangirl.

ARC Review: Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

All I needed to know about this book was that it was set in a travelling carnival and I was hooked. Daughter of the Burning City was a good read, just a little heavy in places when it came to the world building.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

Because You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy by Ameriie

While anthologies aren’t normally my thing Because You Love to Hate Me really was. There were more stories I enjoyed than didn’t, and it had some brilliant contributions from my favourite authors.

Waiting on Wednesday

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

All the Wind in the World by Samantha Mabry

Standalone Sunday

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

You may be looking at the picture for my book haul this month and wondering if that’s all. After all I was at YALC this past weekend so shouldn’t I have more books? The answer is yes, I have a lot more, but I will be posting my YALC recap and haul in a couple of days. If I included everything I wanted to recap in July in one post it would be huge and no one would have the patience to read it, not even me.

July Recap '17, #2

Waterstones

Amazon

July Recap '17, #3

Fairy Loot

Monthly Recaps - Last Month

The book I have featured is being released this month, and it is also a book I am eagerly anticipating, however changes are I won’t be getting around to it until September. This is because it is being released in the UK on the last day of August. I may be a fast reader, but I’m not that fast.

Wonder Woman Warbringer

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

The highly anticipated coming-of-age story for the world’s greatest super hero: Wonder Woman by the #1Ā New York TimesĀ bestselling author Leigh Bardugo.

She will become a legend but first she is Diana, Princess of the Amazons. And her fight is just beginning…

Diana is desperate to prove herself to her warrior sisters. But when the opportunity comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law to save a mere mortal, Alia Keralis. With this single heroic act, Diana may have just doomed the world.

Alia is a Warbringerā€”a descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery. Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies, mortal and divine, determined to destroy or possess the Warbringer.

To save the world, they must stand side by side against the tide of war.

Technically I am doing my July Recap in three parts, posted over the next three days. Tomorrow I will be posting my to-read goal for the next five months ā€“ it’s a lofty one but I’m hoping to get part way through it ā€“ and the day after I will be posting my YALC Recap. Coming up later in the month I will be posting the second of my Reading Around the World posts, and launching a new feature which I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to launch for months now.

    1. It was definitely amazing, and now I’ve finished it I’m pretty much kicking myself for not picking it up again sooner. Still I got around to it in the end. šŸ™‚
Thanks so much Gretchen, yeah I was a little disappointed by both those books but the rest I picked up this month kind of make up for them a little. šŸ™‚ Eliza and Her Monsters was one that helped! šŸ˜€
I love Fairy Loot, and I hope you really love Daughter of the Burning City.
We tend to get a few books released later over here than you guys do in the US, still at least it’s not too much longer to wait now right? YALC was amazing, and my recap post will be up tomorrow. šŸ˜€

    1. Oh yay! I hope it both arrives quickly and you end up really enjoying it as well. šŸ™‚
Oh that’s sucks, but at least Wonder Woman is being released at the end of the month. That way it won’t be long after its release that it’ll be September and then you can buy it! šŸ˜€

  6. OMG YOU WENT TO YALC??? That’s awesome! I’ll be looking forward to reading about that! And I’m so so glad that you liked the Legend trilogy! I also read Gentlemen’s Guide this month and it was SLIGHTLY disappointing, but still really good! AGH I’M SO EXCITED FOR WONDER WOMAN!!! I’m not into Marvel/DC stuff but it’s Leigh so I’ll love it anyways. šŸ˜‚ Hope you have a great August!

    1. Yep, it was a weekend full of craziness but probably the best weekend of the year so far! šŸ˜€ I’ve written my recap, just got to post it now and it will be posted tomorrow.
The Legend trilogy was amazing, and oh that’s a shame about The Gentleman’s Guide but I’m glad you enjoyed it overall May. šŸ™‚
I’m a massive superhero fan, more Marvel over DC, but I saw the Wonder Woman film and fell in love. Also like you said it’s Leigh Bardugo! šŸ˜€
Thanks so much May, I hope you have a brilliant August too. šŸ™‚ ā¤ļø

    1. It was such a brilliant book wasn’t it? I only picked this one up on a whim because I saw some good reviews for it but I was so glad it was one I decided to read when I did! šŸ™‚
Monty is an amazing character, and I’m really looking forwards to the companion novel about Felicity too.
Thanks Casey, I hope you have a brilliant August as well! šŸ˜€ ā¤ļø

  8. I’m so happy to hear that you had a great reading month and I am just slightly jealous that you’ve read Daughter Of The Burning City already! I really want to read it, but I don’t want to get the US hardcover because I am utterly in love with the UK paperback which doesn’t come out for another month and a bit.

Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy was SO good! I read it a couple of years ago and it’s still the reason why I am SUPER excited for Warcross (and then next year, her take on Batman) as I haven’t read her Young Elites trilogy yet! But I have faith in her and I figure if her FIRST trilogy was good her newest works must be great too!

I love your choice of a feature book! I can’t wait to get my hands on Wonder Woman either and I just HOPE that amazon doesn’t mess up too much with my pre-order. I need this book as soon as humanly possible! I’ve been waiting MONTHS at this point.

I can’t wait to read the rest of your July wrap up posts and your YALC recap! šŸ˜€

    1. Thanks so much Swetlana, and oh Daughter of the Burning City has actually been released now in the UK too, so you can read it if you don’t want to wait for the paperback edition. I reckon you’ll find it was worth the wait. šŸ™‚
Oh it really was, and now I can’t wait for Warcross either. I’m hoping before it’s released to have read The Young Elites series as well. I think the same thing, Legend was amazing so really it just has to get better from here on out. šŸ™‚
Same, I pre-ordered it today and now I’m counting down the days until it’s released. Books like this are the reason I’m glad I’m paying a little extra for Amazon Prime! šŸ™‚

      1. Has it? Because when I check amazon, it keeps telling me the release is September 7th (or something along those lines)? I might just get the audiobook for now and then buy the paperback once it’s released. šŸ˜€

I might have to ask my sister to pre-order it for me then if Amazon Prime is better about delivering pre-orders on time!

      2. The paperback version is being released in September, but the hardcover edition was released last week. The link’s below if you wanna check it out;

Normally I have it so my pre-orders are actually delivered to me on the day they’re released, worth the monthly cost in my opinion! šŸ˜€

      3. I’ve been in love with that paperback cover ever since I saw it – I wasn’t able to get myself to buy the hardcover ever since! I’m happy you love the hardcover though! It’s still ridiculously pretty!
