The Goodreads Book Tag

Now I finally have a Goodreads account for my blog I can take part in this tag without feeling like a fraud. Also, now I finally have a Goodreads account for my blog, I’m not sure why it took me so long to get around to creating one. I was tagged by Kirstie at Upside-Down Books. Thanks so much for the tag Kirstie, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

The Goodreads Book Tag

What was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

Because You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy by Ameriie

While I don’t normally read anthologies Because You Love to Hate Me was a highly anticipated release of mine; after all any book that combines stories by V.E. Schwab, Samantha Shannon and Marissa Meyer is a book I need like I need air. Like all anthologies there were some stories I enjoyed and some I didn’t, but overall it was a great read.

Because You Hate to Love Me

What are you currently reading?

Summer Days and Summer Nights: Twelve Love Stories by Stephanie Perkins

I’m about a third of the way through this book and again, like all anthologies, there are some stories I’ve enjoyed and some I haven’t. There are stories by Cassandra Clare and Stephanie Perkins I still have to look forwards to, and stories by Leigh Bardugo and Nina LaCour that I have already read and loved.

Summer Days and Summer Nights

What was the last book you marked as ‘TBR’?

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

This was a book I kept seeing out of the corner of my eye, I didn’t really check out the blurb until after its release but I was hooked from the first sentence. The Last Magician sounds exactly like my kind of book, and from the look of things it’s a standalone which is a point in its favour because I think there needs to be more fantasy standalones out there.

The Last Magician

What book do you plan to read next?

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

I managed to get an ARC of this book from NetGalley, and in order to keep my feedback ratio above 80% I plan to get started on it as soon as possible. A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares does sound really good; I’m definitely intrigued by the idea of the curse that surrounds Esther’s family, killing them with their phobias.

Do you use the star rating system?

Yes, both on Goodreads and my blog. I actually modelled my blogs rating system so it was the same as Goodreads, giving five stars to the books I love and one star to the books I don’t. One thing I do wish was that Goodreads did half stars, it’s something I’d love to see made available.

Are you doing a 2017 Reading Challenge?

I set myself a goal of 100 books this year, which was the same goal I set myself last year, and I have currently read 67 books, 12 ahead of schedule. I’m doing pretty well so far, and if I keep reading at this pace for the remainder of the year I’ll definitely beat my goal for this challenge.

Do you have a wishlist?

My wishlist is pretty much the same as my to-read list on Goodreads. While I do actually own a fair few of the books still on my TBR list for the most part it’s made up of books I don’t own and have yet to get to, or books that haven’t been released yet. That being said I do now have a wishlist; it’s a recent addition to my Goodreads account and one I’ll hopefully be able to keep up to date.

What book do you plan to buy next?

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas

I don’t normally plan out what books I’ll be buying next, the trials and perils of being a mood reader, and I’ll be at YALC next weekend so will likely get loads there so Tower of Dawn isn’t likely going to be my next buy. I have a load of pre-orders on Amazon, and the next one to be released is Tower of Dawn so at the moment it’s the book I plan to buy next.

Do you have any favourite quotes? Share a few.

I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn’t already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race—that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.

None of those things, however, came out of my mouth.

All I was able to do was turn to Liesel Meminger and tell her the only truth I truly know. I said it to the book thief and I say it now to you.

I am haunted by humans.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

You think, as you walk away from Le Cirque des Rêves and into the creeping dawn, that you felt more awake within the confines of the circus.

You are no longer quite certain which side of the fence is the dream.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

“Aren’t you afraid of dying?” he asked Lila now.

She looked at him as if it were a strange question. And then she shook her head. “Death comes for everyone,” she said simply. “I’m not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of dying here.” She swept her hand over the room, the tavern, the city. “I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.”

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

“You’re a storyteller. Dream up something wild and improbable,” she pleaded. “Something beautiful and full of monsters.”

“Beautiful and full of monsters?”

“All the best stories are.”

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

“The only way to survive is to believe you always will.”

The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon

Who are your favourite authors?

For an author to make it onto my favourites list I have to have read and loved three or more of their books. So far my favourite authors include; Leigh Bardugo, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas, Marissa Meyer, Patrick Ness, V.E. Schwab, Samantha Shannon, and Laini Taylor among a few others.

Have you joined any groups?

No, at the moment I just feel like groups aren’t for me. I can barely keep up with WordPress and Goodreads so I feel joining groups would be a little too much for me to handle, and WordPress is always going to come first. Maybe one day I’ll change my mind and want to join a group but it likely won’t be soon.

  1. I love this tag! Goodreads is such an amazing way to keep track of all your books and to also communicate with the reader community 😀 I also recently marked The Last Magician as “to-read” after reading Lilly’s rave review. It sounds like it might be a fantastic magical adventure, and I’m always down for those. I’m not a huge fan of anthologies but Summer Days and Summer Nights looks like a cute summer read. Also, I really like all the authors you mentioned! Glad you’re enjoying it for the most part 😀 I ran across A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares on Netgalley and really wanted an ARC of it, but my ratio’s not high enough I think to snag that one. Congrats on getting a digital copy of it! I hope you enjoy it. I’d love to read your thoughts on it. And of course, those are all some of my favorite authors as well. They are AMAZING! Great post, Beth ❤

    1. Oh it really is, and I remember Lilly’s review for The Last Magician. It’s part of what convinced me to pick up that book (I’m currently reading it now and am loving it so far. It’s definitely a fantastic magical adventure. :D) Honestly I wasn’t a massive fan of Summer Days and Summer Nights either, but I’ll go into that in further detail in my review. 🙂
A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares is an incredible book. I’m going to be writing my review soon and I’m not 100% sure how to organize my thoughts into a review. I’d say try and request it Azia, you never know. 🙂
Thanks so much Azia! 😀 ❤

    1. I was blogging for about a year before I created my Goodreads account, and I can’t say blogging is any easier now I have one. It’s just a way to keep track of what books you have read and what ones you want to read. Still I really enjoy it. 🙂

    1. It was definitely fun and simple, kind of nice to take part in because it was a little different to all the others out there. Oh yay congrats on passing your Goodreads Challenge Meggy. I completely get that because life does get busy, I always manage to find time to read though so I think 100 is a safe goal for me still. 🙂

    1. We really do, though I can understand why there aren’t a lot. It must be hard to develop a whole world in just one book rather than over three.
I think it’s a companion novel, not a prequel but telling the story of another character while the main series is happening you know?

  2. Ohh, I added The Last Magician to my TBR recently as well, I have been hearing very good things about this book for such a long time now, I’m eager to get to it sometime.
I do use the star-rating system as well but it’s true that it would be better if we could like, have half-stars. Sometimes I struggle with the rating I should put to a book -okay. ALL the time ahah.
    Great answers! 🙂

    1. It does sound really good doesn’t it? Here’s hoping it’s a book we really enjoy and this is one where the hype is well deserved. The more I talk about it though the more excited I am to get started on it! 😀
Yeah it really would, there are books I feel are better than three star reads but not quite four star reads and a half rating would be perfect for them. We all suffer through ratings don’t we?
      Thanks Marie! 😀 ❤

      1. Yes definitley. More than often I struggle between 4 and 5 stars because it was definitely almoooost perfection, but not quite reaching it. Rating books is so hard ahah.

  3. The Last Magician was also my last book added to my to read list on Goodreads, it sounded interesting after it was included in Reagan AKA PeruseProject book haul on youtube. Awesome answers.

  4. Ahh I love this tag! I’m just going to go ahead and steal it 😀 I’m so excited about Tower of Dawn but also super nervous??? WHY IS THAT. Oh yeah because it’s all about Chaol (I cry). But I have some suspicions so I am still #excite! And OMG your favorite authors are most of my favorite authors. T’WAS MEANT TO BEEEE

    1. Oh definitely do, I’d love to see your answers for this one. 😀 I’m more excited than nervous, after all it’s Sarah J. Maas, I’m pretty sure she can do no wrong when it comes to books.
Ha, they’re pretty amazing authors, everything they’ve written has been amazing in my opinion! 😀

  5. Someone else who agrees the rating system needs half stars!! It’s a common problem among everyone who uses Goodreads, you would think they would have made that change by now! Love your Book Thief quote ❤️ welcome to Goodreads and happy reading, good luck with your reading challenge ☺️

    1. It really does. I’m also hoping that now Goodreads have fixed the re-reading issue (that used to be a big one me and my friends complained about) they may be looking at half star reviews. I’m keeping my fingers crossed either way.
Thanks, it’s a personal favourite of mine. Ahh, thanks so much. I’m loving Goodreads so far! 😀 ❤

    1. Same here. My to-read list is still really long but it’s a lot more organised now I have a Goodreads profile.
Oh thanks so much for the nomination, and thanks for the link as well. I’ll be sure to check out your post! 😀

  6. I cannot wait to hear what you think of Sutherland’s book. I loved Our Chemical Hearts, so I am excited to read Semi-Definitive, but I have a ton of Aug books to read first. I am glad you use stars. It’s hard for me to get the whole picture without the stars. I end up having to ask the person if it was good or not.

    1. I haven’t got around to Our Chemical Hearts, in fact I don’t think I even have it on my to-read list, but if I enjoy Semi-Definitive I’ll definitely have to check it out. And of course I’ll be posting a review for it once I’ve read it. 🙂
Yeah I feel that way sometimes, before reading a review I like to get an idea of what people thought of the book and the best way to do that is through stars. 🙂

    1. They’re all really beautiful aren’t they? The Book Thief one is one of my all-time favourite quotes in general, and yeah the ones from Strange the Dreamer and The Song Rising are ones that stayed with me the longest when I read both those books. 🙂

  7. Just like you, I don’t normally read anthologies. I’m still not sure if I would pick up Because You Love to Hate Me but I really want to read some of stories. Especially the ones written by V.E. Schwab, Adam Silvera, and Marissa Meyer. I also want to read The Last Magician! I have heard/seen nothing but good buzz around for that book, plus that cover is fantastic. A Semi Definitive List of Worst Nightmares sounds catchy, I will be on the lookout for your review in the future.
“I am haunted by humans” is one of my favorite bookish quotes! I also really like The Night Circus, ADSOM, and Strange the Dreamer quotes!! ugh so good ❤

    1. I’d recommend Because You Love to Hate Me, of all the anthologies I’ve picked up it’s become one of my favourites. The majority of the stories were amazing and I loved the take on villains some of the authors came up with. It’s the buzz that finally drew me to The Last Magician, when I finally paid attention to it that was. It really does, I can’t wait to get started on it I just hope it’s as good as it sounds.
It’s one of mine too, a favourite from The Book Thief and a favourite quote in general. There are so many amazing quotes from some of my favourite books, in the end I had to choose the best of the best! 😀 ❤

      1. Ahh!! I might check Because You Love to Hate Me from the library. If I end up loving it, then I will definitely buy a copy for my personal library at home.
Some books have the best quotes ever that can be so relatable in everyday life.

  8. Ah, I love this tag! Wow, 12 books ahead of schedule, that’s awesome! I’m going for 100 too and I’m at 55 books right now (exactly on track XD). I really want to read Because You Love to Hate Me, The Last Magician, and A Semi-Definitive List of Nightmares! Glad you got to read the first one. 🙂

I definitely want a half-star rating system! I usually am really indecisive and having half stars would really make everything easier. XD I have to decide to round up or down and it’s hard for me to choose one haha!

    Great post! 🙂 ❤

    1. Yep I seem to be flying through books at the moment which is great. Also this way if I ever feel myself starting to slump I know I’ve got twelve books leeway before falling behind on my challenge! 😀 Oh good luck with your challenge as well May, I’m sure you’ll manage to stay on track until the end of the year.
Because You Love to Hate Me was a brilliant book, and I’ve heard good things about The Last Magician, and A Semi-Definitive List of Nightmares so I can’t wait to get started on those.
It would make it so much easier for me as well. Sometimes I feel too harsh rating a book only three stars but it wasn’t quite a four star read. Three and a half would be a perfect rating for it in my mind.
      Thanks so much! 😀 ❤

    1. That’s all right, but oh sorry this is one you’ve already been tagged in before. I definitely feel it’s enough time for your answers to have changed, at the very least what books you read last, plan to read next, etc. 😀
It really does, it’s a book I can’t wait to get started on! 🙂
