Books that Made Me Want to Travel

Tomorrow I am going to be launching a new feature on my blog.

It’s very exciting; both because I haven’t ever done anything like this before and because it’s something I can’t wait to share with you all, but more on my new feature at the bottom of this post. Today is more of an introduction to kick things off. You may be able to guess a little about what my new feature will be around based on the title of this post.

After reading, travelling is one of my main loves. I want to see the whole world and I won’t let anything stand in my way. I’ve already been to some amazing countries, with even more on my must-travel-to list, and a lot of my travel destinations have been inspired by books. Reading inspires me to do a lot and when I read about all these places books have been set, so far away from my own home, I can’t help but want to see them for myself.

Top Ten Books that Made Me Want to Travel

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Laini Taylor has this magical way of writing that makes it seem like the normal worlds and cities her books are set in are filled with magic. The first time I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone I fell in love with her description of Prague, so I jumped at the change to go there myself.

It’s also the reason her other books are on my list as well;

Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor, set in Morocco

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor, set in Rome (Vatican City)

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Books with road trips are a weakness of mine, and Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is the best of the best. Amy and Roger travel to so many different states, and the adventures they have and the sights they see are a major part of the story. This book makes me want to go on my own American road trip.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

India is a place on my must-travel-to list, but until I read The Star-Touched Queen I can’t say it was near the top. Roshani Chokshi’s way of writing reminds me of Laini Taylor’s in that she wrote a world full of magic, and the second I finished The Star-Touched Queen I knew I had to experience to country for myself.

Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

With a setting inspired by Japan and a story inspired in small ways by Mulan, written by Renee Ahdieh, I was always going to love Flame in the Mist. It’s a beautiful book and like with The Star-Touched Queen after finishing it I moved Japan higher on my must-travel-to list.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I have always wanted to visit Greece, always, but for some reason I’ve never gone and I can’t even say I have plans to go there in the near future. One day I will but until then I’ll have to settle for reading books like the Percy Jackson series which retell Greek myths and legend and fill me with wanderlust.

Percy Jackson

These last three books have one thing in common, well two if you count the fact that I’ve read all three as something they have in common, and that’s where they’re set;

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Books Set in Russia

Russia has been a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time, ever since I saw the movie Anastasia as a child, but reading these books that are either set in Russia or a world inspired by Russia has only made me more determined to go there one day myself. Hopefully one day soon as me and my sister a tentatively planning our 2018 trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Keep an eye out tomorrow for the first post as part of my new feature; Reading Around the World.

Reading Around the World

It’s been a lot of fun for me to plan and prepare this new feature, so I hope you all enjoy reading it. I still have another new feature under wraps for later this month, one I’ve been planning for months and that I was supposed to launch last month so I really can’t wait to share it with you.

  2. Ohhhh this is definitely an exciting feature! Travelling is probably one of the best things about life. Whenever I do get the chance to travel, I always try and make the most out of it and it always feels so rewarding. I’m glad that you mention how reading just makes you want to travel more, and you’re so right! Books always have amazing settings and worlds to discover, it’s one of the best things about them, especially fantasy. Looking forward to your future posts for this, Beth! 😀

    1. Thanks Lashaan. Yes that’s definitely my favourite part of life, travelling. I love seeing new places, experiencing new things, and I always try and make the most of it because some of the places I go are once in a lifetime experiences.
Oh reading and travelling kind of go hand in hand for me. If only we could travel the all the fictional worlds we read about as well right?
      Thanks so much Lashaan! 😀

  3. I love this post! Some of these books have encouraged me to travel as well! Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour was the book that started it all. After reading it, I knew I wanted to take a roadtrip around the states and after that I wanted to travel around the world! Haven’t done the road trip, but I’ve managed to get myself to Ireland, at least LOL. The book that made me want to visit India was actually The Tiger’s Curse by Colleen Houck. But Star-touched Queen is definitely a wonderful choice, too! I’ve always wanted to visit Russia! I really want to see St. Basil’s Church in person. And Daughter of Smoke and Bone (and Mission Impossible lol) definitely made me want to visit Prague one day! So cool that you managed to go! 😀 Awesome post, Beth!

    1. Thanks so much Azia, and yeah there are just so many books out there with such rich world-building that you can’t help but want to explore the places they talk about. I only read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour recently but wow did I want to go on a road trip after I finished it. 😀
Maybe one day we’ll manage to get around to one.
Oh I still need to check out The Tiger’s Curse, I think it’s on my to-read list still. If it made you want to visit India like The Star-Touched Queen did for me I need to try and get around to it a little sooner.
Russia sounds amazing and Prague really was amazing. I’m glad I got the chance to do and hopefully you will one day to Azia!
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

      1. Amy & Roger’s is my favorite Matson book so far. I was so happy to see your review on it, especially since you gave it such a high rating. Warms my heart lol.
Tiger’s Curse has a great atmosphere. I’m afraid the main character is a bit difficult to handle. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on the book once you get around to it!
        And np! 😀

      2. It’s definitely my favourite by Morgan Matson so far. Honestly I was a little surprised how much I loved it, but the road trip aspect certainly helped a little. 🙂
I’m sure I’ll get around to it one day, it’s been a book on my radar for a while now. 😀

  4. I have heard that The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye is really good. Well, I have read reviews about it, and it would like to read it at some point. I have added it to the wish list and everything haha Great post Beth! I have always believe that we travel around the world and live too many lives by reading!

PS: So sad, I thought you were following me T_T

    1. I wasn’t that keen on it, but I really enjoyed the setting and pretty much any book set in Russia makes me want to visit the country. I hope you enjoy it though, I know a fair few people have so I’m sure you will. 🙂
Thanks so much, and yeah I feel the same way about reading! 😀

God yes, Amy and Roger has to be the ultimate road trip book. It just makes you want to have your own adventure like they did. Thanks again. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much, I’ll be posting it a little later tonight and I’m very excited for everyone to see it. 🙂 ❤ Yes Daughter of Smoke and Bone was probably the first book I read that really inspired me to actually visit a country, rather than just think about it. It ended up being a brilliant trip as well. 🙂

  6. Oooh what an exciting news!! I love travelling through books, it helps when you can’t leave the house, haha! But it’s not only that, it just is so amazing to be able to be transported to placed you never thought you’d go/imagine, thanks to stories.

    1. Yes travelling through books is one of the things I love about reading, and it’s why in fantasy book especially the world building is so important to me. I may not be able to visit some of the places I read about but reading about them is really the next best thing. I hope you enjoy my new feature Meggy! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Emma. I’ve kind of missed doing Top Ten Tuesday posts this month so this is my little way of incorporating that into an announcement for my new feature! 😀
There seem to be plenty of books set in Europe I guess you must find places you want to go a lot in that case. 🙂

      1. Yes I am constantly wanting to travel from books, especially since I read a lot of historical fiction! It’s a bummer that TTT is taking a break, especially since the week before I decided to join back in on it! But this is an awesome way to host it for yourself!

  7. This looks so exciting Beth! I can’t count the amount of times reading has made me want to pick up and just go places! I think it kinda also gives us great exposure to places we haven’t been! I look forward to your first post! 😀

    1. Thanks Meghan, I’ll be posting it a little later tonight and I’m very excited for everyone to see it. 🙂 There are so many places reading has made me want to go to, and even when it comes to fantasy places I can’t go to reading is the best way to experience that world. 😀

  8. I love travelling, too! I haven’t been to a ton of different countries yet, but I hope to get to more (finances allowing!). I’d love to go to Italy, but flights there tend to be on the pricier side for me. I did get a nice deal flying to Sweden once though!

    1. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited a fair few countries but there are plenty more I want to go to still, and one day I will! Italy is one of my all-time favourite places to visit. I hope you manage to make it there one day, and oh that’s good. Sweden’s one of the places I haven’t been myself, but one day… 🙂

  9. OOH OOH OOH!!! I AM SO SO EXCITED ABOUT YOUR NEW FEATURE! The image you took is SO so pretty. ❤ And it sounds so intriguing! AGH I CAN'T WANT TO LEARN MORE. Anyways, yesssss! Reading PJO really made me want to go to Greece and learn more about the Ancient Greek life. Harry Potter and ADSOM made me want to travel to London/England (though to be fair, I've wanted to go to London/England for a long time XD). And while I have a hard time with Laini Taylor's writing style sometimes, she definitely makes ordinary places seem magical!

    1. Thanks so so much May. ❤ I am planning another new feature for later this month, but I'm very excited for you all to see the one I'm going to be posting today. I'm kind of nervous about it but in a good way. 🙂
I think any book that deals with Greek myths makes me want to go to Greece, and one day I actually will! Oh if you get a chance definitely come to London, it's such an amazing place and I'm sure you'll love it.
Reading Laini Taylor's books is always worth it, they may be hard to get into but her writing is so detailed and magical. I'm so excited for her next release! 😀 ❤
