The Candy Book Tag

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love taking part in food tags. They always make me so hungry and this one was no exception. I almost needed a pile of candy next to me to snack on as I answered these questions. I was tagged by Michelle at Book Adventures. Thanks so much for the tag Michelle, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

The Candy Book Tag

Apples:
Ah. Healthy food. It is deep, meaningful, and probably won a lot of awards but, um, it really isn’t your thing.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I’m not sure whether this book is deep and meaningful, or if it’s won a lot of awards, but The Girl on the Train is a book that everyone seems to be raving about. People I know who aren’t big readers have started recommending it to me, and while part of me feels like I should pick it up at the moment it’s just not something I’m interested in.

The Girl on the Train

Milk Chocolate:
This is a book you’d recommend to absolutely EVERYONE.

Either the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab…

shades-of-magic-uk-series

…Or The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon

The Bone Season2

These two series are pretty much my go-to book recommendations, and every time they come up in conversation I’m always rushing in to recommend them. The Shades of Magic series has ended with A Conjuring of Light, and what an ending it was, but there are still four more books of The Bone Season series to be released that I am eagerly waiting for.

Black Jellybeans:
Why do these exist??

The Death Cure by James Dashner and Allegiant by Veronica Roth

I have never been more frustrated by the way a series ended than I was with these two books. I really enjoyed The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, and liked Divergent and Insurgent well enough, but the last book of both series ended up ruining it all for me. If you’ve read either of these two you know what I’m talking about, it’s likely you feel the same way.

Black Jellybeans

Chocolate Kisses:
Awww this novel had the best romance.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

It’s rare that I have bookish OTPs, but Annabelle and Owen from Just Listen were the first and still the best in my opinion. This was the first YA contemporary I read and the book that kick started my love for the genre, although that love faded a little in the bright light of the fantasy genre until I started blogging, and my love for Sarah Dessen.

Gummy Spiders:
Eek! You made sure to check under your bed every night for a week after reading this scary one.

Slasher Girls & Monster Boys by April Genevieve Tucholke (Editor)

Scary stories aren’t normally my thing. I can be a massive wimp when it comes to the horror genre and I’ll be the first to admit it, but I saw some great reviews for Slasher Girls & Monster Boys and thought, ‘why not?’. The story that creeped me out the most was the Alice in Wonderland influenced one by Carrie Ryan but all were really well written, and quite scary too.

Jumbo Lollipop:
This took you forever to get through, but hey! You did it!

Prodigy by Marie Lu

Back when I first started this series in 2014 I was in the middle of a massive reading slump, so I got through about 60% before giving up and putting Prodigy back on my to-read list. Well I finally got back into this series and today, three years after I started it, I finally finished Prodigy. So far the series is just as amazing as I remembered, and just as amazing as everyone said it was.

Cotton Candy:
Admit it, you loved this when you were younger (you probably still do). Think children’s or MG fiction.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Asides from Harry Potter (which is an obvious choice for this question) A Series of Unfortunate Events was one of the first series I read when I was younger that kick started my love of reading. I loved Lemony Snicket’s writing style and I was always eager to get started on another tale of the Baudelaire orphans, and discover how they would outwit Count Olaf this time around.

  2. Slasher Girls & Monster Boys always did catch my eye, especially with Bardugo among the authors. Also glad to see Prodigy on here, I see that you’ve even reviewed books from the series recently. Seems like you’ve completed something you’ve put off for a while now! 😛

  3. Such great answers to such a cute tag! Oh I want to read the Bone Season! (I’m hoping to squeeze it in this month!) It’s so good to hear you recommend it so highly… I’m hanging my head to admit I haven’t read Shades of Magic series either (I want to read it this year!) Marie Lu’s Legend series is another on my TBR this year list… lol! I so agree with you about The Girl on the Train… it’s not something I’m interested in even after seeing it all over the place.

Last but not least… Thank you for tagging me!! I’m going to have fun with this one 😀

    1. Thanks so much Dani. 🙂 Well The Bone Season is a highly recommended series coming from me (obvious given what question I picked it for in this tag) and oh so is Shades of Magic. You really need to read that trilogy! 😀
Marie Lu’s series is really good so far, what I’ve read I mean, and The Girl on the Train just doesn’t interest me at all.
That’s all right, I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your answers for this one! 😀

  4. Lovely answers, Beth! It’s not a big surprise to see Shades of Magic here on your list, but it’s always good – it is such an amazing series after all 😀
I have this Sarah Dessen book you mentioned in my to-buy-next TBR (meaning it’s already on my basket on Amazon but I need to resist for now before ordering new books haha) , I can’t wait to read it 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 No definitely not a surprise now. I feel like I talk about that series such a lot but it’s a favourite of mine so it’s an obvious choice for questions like these.
Oh my god Marie you need to read Just Listen. It’s an incredible book, my favourite by Sarah Dessen, and I can’t wait to see what you think of it! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Destiny. Annabelle and Owen were actually my very first OTP because I loved their relationships, it was so cute. The fact that I loved Just Listen as well definitely helped when it came to falling in love with both characters! 😀

  5. You totally nailed Allegiant. Such a weak ending for that series. And Just Listen is an awesome pick too. It’s one of my favorite Dessen books. PS: The Legend series is one of my faves. I am getting emotional just thinking about it.

    1. It was an all-around disappointing ending for the series, then again I can’t say the Divergent series was a favourite of mine to begin with.
Just Listen is my favourite Sarah Dessen book, as well as the first I ever read by her.
I’m most of the way through Champion now, and it’s really good so far. I can see why so many people love this series! 😀

  6. Everyone is always talking about how AMAZING the A Darker Shade of Magic series is! We are so tired of being out of the loop on this one! We need to read this series ASAP!!! It must be phenomenal, because we have yet to hear a single bad thing about it!!

Also, loved this tag! We had so much fun reading your answers!

  7. Oh I so agree with you on Shades of Magic! Definitely a series I’d recommend everyone 😊
Also absolutely agree on The Maze Runner! What crap ending was that?? The series kept deteriorating as it went on, in my opinion, but I was always hopeful it would turn around… No such luck.
I only read Divergent and wasn’t the smallest bit interested in getting the sequels. It didn’t evoke any feelings within me.
Awesome choices and thanks for tagging me! I’ve already done this one, though. I love food themed tags as well hahaha 😆

    1. Yep, it’s my favourite and for that reason I will recommend it to pretty much everyone who hasn’t read it already! 😀
God I’m still a little disappointed by the way it ended, and it was a real shame because the first two books were quite interesting. Then we got The Death Cure as the last and…why?
I can’t say I’d recommend Divergent either, not knowing how it ends.
Thanks Sophie, and that’s all right. 🙂 Oh that’s a shame, but yeah food tags are always fun! 😀

  8. I know exactly what you mean with Dashner and Roth. Dashner though has followed it up with The Fever Code so I really want to read that. I think it might help.
There is no saving Allegiant. ☹️

    1. Yeah the last book in each of those series was a disappointment. I really enjoyed Dashner’s first prequel for The Maze Runner series so I’m hopeful when it comes to The Fever Code. Yeah no saving Allegiant though. 🙂

  9. What a fun tag! A Series of Unfortunate Events! 😀 😀 I still love that series, I’ve read it at least three times in full, and I’ve read the first couple of books plenty of times! SO GOOD! They are the perfect middle grade books! 😀

  10. Cool tag and awesome answers, Beth! I feel like The Girl on the Train is a love it or hate it type of book. I definitely don’t think it’s for everyone, especially since most, if not all, the characters are unlikable in some way. Also, the mystery is kind of easy to figure out midway through. So, if you like to read the world tumbling down around the character, it’d be a great book LOL. Of course Shades of Magic. Never surprised by that choice. Nor The Bone Season series, which I STILL have yet to read. I’ve never really gotten into Sarah Dessen books but I think I’d like to try again. So glad you’re enjoying the Legend trilogy and yaaaas. Thank you for mentioning A Series of Unfortunate Events! Those were my FAVORITE books when I was younger 😀

    1. Thanks so much Azia! 🙂 Everyone I know who has read The Girl on the Train has loved it but I think for me it’s more likely to be a hate book just because it’s not my thing at all. Also hearing that about the characters isn’t really inspiring much confidence in me you know?
They’re each my favourite series for a reason, so I always have to pick them for questions like this, there’s just no other choice in the matter but they’re both amazing, beyond amazing actually.
Oh I hope you enjoy Sarah Dessen’s book the next time around then, and I am loving the Legend series so far. I’m glad I’ve finally gotten back into reading it.
That’s all right, they’re one of my childhood favourites too! 😀

      1. Certainly not 😂 Well, if it ain’t your thing, then I’d support your passing it up 🙂
I really do need to read the Bone Season series. Melissa seems to be in love with them, too! 😊
So happy you’re enjoying the Legend trilogy. It has such a wonderfully bittersweet ending. One of my favorites in YA actually.
And it’s awesome Netflix finally picked up the show for the Unfortunate series! Can’t wait for the second season 😀

      2. Yeah I have too many other books on my TBR list to try and read one I’m not that interested in. 🙂
It’s an amazing series, one I’d highly recommend. Yes I speak to Melissa a lot about TBS books. 😀
It’s become one of my favourites too, definitely a bittersweet ending but it could have been much worse I think.
I still need to watch the first season. I’m way behind on shows I need to watch! 😀

  11. Oh, I need to read The Bone Witch series! I definitely agree that the Shades of Magic trilogy is a must-read — it is BEAUTIFUL. And I read the first four books of The Series of Unfortunate Events but haven’t finished the rest! I really do need to; I enjoyed it so much when I read it.

Woo hoo for reading the Legend trilogy! Believe me, you’re in for a treat with Champion. And I actually cried for Allegiant??? Even though I knew how it ended and I’m cringing at my old self. XD But like… some endings are meant to be that way, you know? I mean, I’m planning an ending like that in my own novel. XD

    1. Shades of Magic is always going to be my default answer for that question, same with The Bone Season series which I’d definitely recommend picking up May! 😀 Oh hopefully you’ll manage to get back into that series soon.
I am most of the way through Champion now and I know there is going to be a heartbreaking ending, not because of spoilers but just because I feel like this book is going to have a heartbreaking ending. I’m not prepared. Yeah I get that some endings are meant to be, and oh it’s cruel writing one in your book, you will end up breaking the heart of your readers May! 🙂

      1. It’s something I should probably re-read, because I can’t remember what happened in any of the last few books.
I haven’t got to any of the endings of her series yet, but I’m anticipating a lot of heartache in Champion. 🙂

  12. I freaking love this tag, the questions are adorable xD I totally agree with your choices for ‘why do these exsist’ lol Tris annoyed me so much in that one but I love the other two additions…which maybe makes it suck even more!
