June Recap

June really was a month of two halves for me. The first half was great; I went to Krakow for the weekend and started my new job, and although I was really busy I was really enjoying life. Then we got to the halfway point and I hit a brick wall. I lost my motivation for pretty much everything and I’ll admit my blogging suffered a little as well. I know in last month’s recap I promised a new feature, it’s still in the works but it’s now a July reveal rather than a June one.

Books I Reviewed

June Recap '17, #1

Morgan Matson

After finishing Since You’ve Been Gone I added the rest of Morgan Matson’s books to my to-read list. It took me a year but I finally got around to two more of her releases and of course I loved them, and wondered why I didn’t read them sooner.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

A Million Junes by Emily Henry

Emily Henry has become one of my favourite magical realism authors. I can’t pick between A Million Junes and The Love That Split the World for my favourite release of hers but it’s safe to say they’re two books I’d recommend to everyone.

The Archived Series

The Archived was the very first book by Victoria Schwab I read, and while not my favourite of her releases this series is wonderful. I am hoping there is a third book in the works because after re-reading The Unbound I need more.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab

The Unbound by Victoria Schwab

ARC Review: Now I Rise by Kiersten White

And I Darken was a great start to The Conqueror’s Saga, but Now I Rise completely blew it out the water. It takes everything that was set up in the first book and runs with it, creating a thrilling story as we follow Lada in Wallachia and Radu in Constantinople.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

Our Dark Duet by V.E. Schwab

This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and the last book in the Monsters of Verity duology. Our Dark Duet was everything I hoped for; it was a dark book that broke my heart but it was the perfect ending for August and Kate’s story.

Roar by Cora Carmack

Roar had a lot of potential, and I loved the world-building, but unfortunately the plot was too slow and other than Aurora I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. Still after the way it ended my hopes are for a promising sequel.

ARC Review: Nemesis by Brendan Reichs

It was the blurb that drew me to this novel, and Nemesis really was a book of two halves. Unfortunately for me it felt like those two halves were two separate stories rather than one singular one. Still, like Roar, I’m excited for the sequel.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

I did say in my May recap that my book hauls for the next couple of months were going to be big, but even so I’m surprised by how many books I actually ended up with this month. In my defence though I didn’t pay for all of these; a good few of them were given to me as part of what I’m calling my ‘Birthday Haul’.

Monthly Recaps - Last Month

Normally anthologies aren’t my thing. The ones I have read ā€“ My True Love Gave to Me, and Slasher Girls & Monster Boys ā€“ I really enjoyed but I’m still reluctant to pick them up. However this is an anthology with stories by so so many of my favourite authors in and I am powerless to resist its lure.

Because You Hate to Love Me

Because You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy by Ameriie

Leave it to the heroes to save the worldā€”villains just want toĀ ruleĀ the world.

In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed, bestselling authors team up with thirteen influential BookTubers to reimagine fairy tales from the oft-misunderstood villains’ points of view.

These fractured, unconventional spins on classics like “Medusa,”Ā Sherlock Holmes, and “Jack and the Beanstalk” provide a behind-the-curtain look at villains’ acts of vengeance, defiance, and rageā€”and the pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that spurned them on. No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!

Featuring writing from…

Authors: RenƩe Ahdieh, Ameriie, Soman Chainani, Susan Dennard, Sarah Enni, Marissa Meyer, Cindy Pon, Victoria Schwab, Samantha Shannon, Adam Silvera, Andrew Smith, April Genevieve Tucholke, and Nicola Yoon

BookTubers: Benjamin Alderson (Benjaminoftomes), Sasha Alsberg (abookutopia), Whitney Atkinson (WhittyNovels), Tina Burke (ChristinaReadsYA blog and TheLushables), Catriona Feeney (LittleBookOwl), Jesse George (JessetheReader), Zoƫ Herdt (readbyzoe), Samantha Lane (Thoughts on Tomes), Sophia Lee (thebookbasement), Raeleen Lemay (padfootandprongs07), Regan Perusse (PeruseProject), Christine Riccio (polandbananasBOOKS), and Steph Sinclair & Kat Kennedy (Cuddlebuggery blog and channel).

July is the month I start getting things back on track again. I will be revealing two new features; the one that was originally planned in June and another to make up for the fact that I didn’t post the first one when I planned to. Also I am going to YALC at the end of the month, something I am very excited about. It was great fun last year and I know it will be just as much fun this year.

  1. Love how beautiful your haul is!! Hope you get to enjoy them all soon! šŸ˜› I just realize that your Our Dark Duet is paperback. I never wondered till now, but do books come out as paperback first in the U.K.? Or do you get both and your just prefer them over hardcovers? Oh, and that anthology looks like so much fun. It really has an intriguing cast of authors. Didn’t expect to see booktubers on it too! Hope July has been nice to you, Beth. šŸ˜€

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan, and yeah I hope so too. It really does depend on the book, there are some that are released in hardcover and the paperback comes out a year later, but others that are released straight away as paperback. I almost think it depends on the publisher?
It really does, I actually brought it today so I’m really excited to get started on it as soon as possible! šŸ˜€ Thanks Lashaan, I hope your July is going well too. šŸ™‚

    1. Thanks so much Lauren. šŸ™‚ There is plenty of Rick Riordan in this haul, hopefully I’ll be able to get around to these books soon seeing as that’s the case. šŸ˜€
This Savage Song is amazing, I’m sure you’ll love it, and yeah Because You Love to Hate Me sounds epic as well! šŸ™‚

  2. I’m excited to read ODD! Glad you loved it, I haven’t read VE’s Archived series and I don’t know if I want to coz I’m scared it just won’t compare to her latest books 0.0
Roar was one of my most anticipated but now that reviews have come out and it’s more romance than epic storm magic I’m not that interested in it šŸ˜¦ To many books to waste time on something I think will be at the most a 3/5 for me.

Spellsingers on my TBR! It sounds awesome and I hope you love it ā¤ Amazing birthday haul. Have a great July!

    1. ODD is amazing, I’m sure you’ll love it but you’ll have to let me know what you think when you have finished it. šŸ™‚ I don’t think The Archived was as good as her latest books but it’s still a great series. If you’re a fan of V.E. Schwab it’s a series I’d recommend. šŸ™‚
Roar is definitely more epic romance than anything else, but the world building and storm magic aspects are still quite well developed. Yeah I know that feeling. šŸ™‚
It really does, the blurb is the main reason I picked that one up. Thanks so much Casey, I hope you have a great July as well. šŸ™‚ ā¤ļø

  3. You’ve had a pretty good month despite the second half being a bit iffy! I don’t think there is a planned release date for the third book in the archived series. As far as I can remember after looking it up a while back, she wants to release it at some time, but she’s not sure when and it’s not in the works. Which is why I’m hesitant to start the series… I still need to get a copy of Our Dark Duet, but I was a bit disappointed with the first book, so it’s not high on my tbr right now. I will get to it eventually though! I pre ordered the paperback of Nemesis earlier on, which releases here some time later this month šŸ™‚ it’s definitely and anticipated read for me! Great month! Hope you have an awesome July!

    1. Thanks Lauren, and yeah the first half was great and more than enough to make up for the second half. We have a title for the third book but no cover, blurb or release date so no clue whether it will be released or not. The first two books are good though but I think it’s a good idea to wait for a potential third book.
Oh that’s a shame, but I enjoyed Our Dark Duet more than the first book so maybe you will as well. šŸ™‚ I hope you enjoy Nemesis as well. it’s an interesting book so I’ll be looking forwards to reading your thoughts on it.
Thanks Lauren, I hope you have a great July as well. šŸ™‚

      1. I wanted to read it a while back and then I saw about the third book and thought I would just wait and see what would happen! I don’t want to go into a series and love and potentially not get an ending to it… I’ve seen a lot of praise for it, and I will get to it eventually… šŸ™‚ and I’m really looking forward to nemesis as well šŸ™‚ looks great šŸ™‚

      2. I think because The Unbound doesn’t end on a massive cliffhanger this series can be taken as a duology. The ending is open so there’s potential for a third book but if one is never released I’ll be happy with the way The Unbound finished. Hopefully a third book will be released, and then you can start the series knowing that and love it more! šŸ™‚

      3. I might get around to reading it now that youā€™ve said that – if it can be taken as a duology with the potential of a third book šŸ™‚

  4. I’ve been getting in a reading/blogging slump-ish mood as well??? I’m just riding it out though, I’m not too worried about it šŸ˜›

Man, everyone’s got the new house HP editions! I want (make that need) a Ravenclaw one SO BADLY!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Riding it through is what I’m trying to do. I’ve always thought good advice for slumps was to let them run their course but when it comes to blogging ones pushing through it is what’s working for me.
Buy it! You can never have too many editions of Harry Potter! šŸ˜€

  5. I’m sorry you lost a bit of your motivation this month, Beth! I hope July will be better and I can’t wait to see the new features you’re going to come up with šŸ™‚ Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Legend trilogy as well, I haven’t read it but I’m curious about it!
    I hope you’ll have a lovely month ā¤ ā¤

    1. Thanks Marie. Well so far July has been better, and the first half of June was good enough that it made up for the bad end to the month as well. šŸ™‚ I’ll be posting my new features soon, I’m quite excited to get them out in the world, and I’ll be starting Legend on Monday so you’ll be able to see my thoughts on it very soon as well.
Thanks Marie, I hope you have an amazing July as well! šŸ˜€ ā¤

  6. I’m sorry the latter half of June wasn’t as fulfilling as the first half, but I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Krakow! The pictures you took were lovely. And it seems like you read some really interesting books. Your book haul is amazing. I absolutely love the Legend series, so it warms my heart that you’ve got the entire trilogy. Now I can’t wait to see your thoughts on them šŸ˜€ Also, that Fairy Loot box is gorgeous. Love the pillow (not sure if it’s part of the box, but I love it regardless haha). And I don’t usually read many anthologies either, but I’m really interested in reading that one! So many great authors and BookTubers in that one! šŸ˜€ So excited for it! And who wouldn’t enjoy a book about villains šŸ˜‰

    1. Yeah, that was a shame but I’m getting back in the swing of things now, and I feel like the first half of the month was enough to make up for how crappy the last half of the month was. Thanks so much Azia, yeah there are some interesting books in my recap/haul this month. I can’t wait to get around to so many of them.
Legend is next on my to-read list. I’m planning on starting it tomorrow so you’ll be able to see my thoughts very soon. Yep the pillow was part of the box, I always love the ones that contain pillows the best! šŸ˜€
For me it’s the authors that are inspiring me to pick up Because You Love to Hate Me, I’m not a massive follower of booktubers, it sounds great and yeah I love books about villains. šŸ˜€

      1. That’s wonderful to know! Hopefully this month proves to be enjoyable all the way up to the end šŸ˜€ And can’t wait to read all your reviews on them!
Yaaaaay! I’ll keep an eye out for that review šŸ™‚ You’re making me want to reread that trilogy myself haha. It was part of the box? Oh my god that’s awesome! All the more reason for me to get a box šŸ˜€
I don’t follow many book tubers either. I want the book for the authors. But at least now I know which booktubers to look up! Really excited for the book šŸ˜€

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Well I’m keeping my fingers crossed it turns out that way that’s for sure. šŸ™‚
Well I’ve finished the first book in the trilogy so my review will be up pretty soon-ish. Safe to say I loved it though. šŸ™‚
Yep, well the pillow cover was, you have to buy the pillow to put in it but you can get them for quite cheap, and I had a few spares lying around anyways. Either way the boxes are always worth it. šŸ˜€
The main reason I’m buying the book is for the authors. I can’t wait! šŸ™‚ ā¤ļø

      3. Yaaaaaas, SO happy you loved it šŸ˜€ Ain’t Day the cutest? Love June, too!
Oh okay, that makes a lot more sense. I was, lowkey, wondering how they fir a pillow in the box LOL. Good to know haha
Fingers crossed it’s as good as we think it will be! šŸ˜€

      4. I loved them both. I finished Prodigy today, after starting it back in 2014! šŸ™‚
An actual pillow would be too big. Besides you can get the insides really cheap in certain places so it’s not too bad to go out and buy one if you need to. šŸ™‚

  7. I’M SO EXCITED TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR NEW FEATURE!!! I’m sure it’ll be amazing. šŸ˜‰ And AGH YES YOU GOT THE LEGEND TRILOGY!!! I am so so excited to hear your thoughts on it — I’m 89% confident that you’ll like it. šŸ™‚ AGH WHAT A WONDERFUL BOOK HAUL! And happy birthday!!! You should’ve told us it was your birthday. šŸ˜› And I’m a little hesitant to trust booktubers (though they are great), but I am SUPER excited about Because You Love to Hate Me!!! I LOVE DARK VILLAINY STUFF.

    1. I’ve been planning it for a while now so I hope it will be. I’m excited to post it as well because it’s been floating around the back of my mind for ages and I need to get it out there in the world. šŸ™‚
I am going to be starting Legend tomorrow. It’s been on my to-read list for ages but I’m finally in a place where I want to pick up the first book again. I’ve heard great things about it so I’m sure I’ll like it too! šŸ˜€
Thanks May, I’ll probably mention it next year because I’m thinking of doing a birthday giveaway or something like that.
I’m the same, I’m not a massive follower of booktubers but I do love villains. šŸ™‚

  8. Looks like you had a great reading month Beth! Glad to see you loved Our Dark Duet too! And I need to get to The Archived series soon, it sounds excellent and I’d love to see how Schwab’s earlier work compares with her current writing. It was my birthday in June too, yay for June babies! Hope you had a wonderful time celebrating!

    1. Thanks Kate, I think this was a pretty good reading month too! šŸ™‚ Oh Our Dark Duet was excellent, but then I expected nothing less from Schwab. I really hope you enjoy her Archived series, you’ll have to let me know what you do think when you’ve read them.
Happy birthday for you as well then Kate, I had a great day, thanks, I hope you did too! šŸ˜€

      1. When I finished ODD I was so sad, but the more I reflect back, the more I think it was such a fitting ending. Everything was wrapped up so conclusively and the characters all had definitive closure. I’m thinking of looking for The Archived series at YALC if they have it. Haha thanks, glad we both had fun šŸ™‚

      2. I think after the way it ended being sad is a little natural. It was a bittersweet ending to say the least. But yeah it was a fitting one for the duology.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed they do have it there. Hopefully given V.E. Schwab is going to be there they will. šŸ™‚
