Waiting on Wednesday: Ringer

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event which aims to shine a light on eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.

Ringer by Lauren Oliver
Release Date: October 3rd 2017

Ringer

Like its ambitious companion novel, Replica, this far-reaching novel by powerhouse bestselling author Lauren Oliver digs deep into questions of how to be a human being in a world where humanity cannot be taken for granted.

In the world outside the Haven Institute, Lyra and Caelum are finding it hard to be human—and neither of them knows where they belong or who they can trust. When Caelum leaves without warning to pursue the dream of a place he belongs, Lyra follows him, convinced that together they will hunt down a cure for the illness that’s slowly consuming her mind. But what they uncover is a shocking connection to their past—even as their future seems in danger of collapsing.

After discovering the uncomfortable truth about her connection to the Haven Institute, Gemma struggles to return to her normal life. But when she learns that her controlling and powerful father has new plans for Lyra and Caelum, Gemma and her boyfriend, Pete, leave in the middle of the night to warn them of the danger they face. When an untimely accident derails them, they are mistaken for the escaped replicas and seized by strangers hired to capture them. The Haven Institute wasn’t destroyed after all, and now Gemma is the one behind the walls.

Lyra’s and Gemma’s stories can be read separately – with either story first – or in alternating chapters, but no matter which way you turn the book, the two distinct stories combine into one breathtaking experience for both heroines and readers alike.

Replica was the first book by Lauren Oliver I picked up but it definitely won’t be the last. The story was enjoyable but what made this book stand out for me was the way it was written, intertwining Lyra’s and Gemma’s stories so you could read them any way you like. I’m excited for Ringer to carry on the story after the way it ended in Replica; this time I think I’ll give alternating Lyra’s and Gemma’s chapters a go to see if it changes the story for me.

What do you think of Ringer? Is it a must on your to-read list, or are there any other books you can’t wait for the release date of? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you took part in this week’s Waiting on Wednesday as well.

  1. I have yet to read Replica but I was really intrigued by the format! I think it’s such a fresh and clever way to engage readers 😀 I just saw it in my local library so maybe I’ll be able to snatch it up to read this summer! I’m really glad you enjoyed the story as well. It encourages me to pick it up one day 😀

    1. The format for Replica was the main reason I was intrigued by the book. It was a really interesting way to tell the story and it was well-written as well so it definitely worked for this book.
I hope you enjoy Replica when you get around to it Azia, I’m sure you will though! 😀

  2. Great pick, Beth! I’m really, really impatient to get around to reading this book – I loved Replica as well and can’t wait to see what happens next. I read the first book alternating between the two point of views and I think it was a good way to read it 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie! As we slowly approach the release of this book in getting more and more impatient for it as well. 🙂
Replica really set the scene for an epic second book and yeah I’m so excited to find out what happens now. When I read it I read Lyra’s story first and then Gemma’s, I think this time I’ll read it in alternating chapters. 😀

  3. YAS I’M SO EXCITED FOR RINGER TOO!!! Replica was pretty good and it left me wanting more. And I don’t remember but I think it was a very cliffhanger ending for me! I definitely loved the intertwining POVs! ALSO PETE. PETE IS GREAT. I LOVE HIM.

    1. It’s going to be amazing isn’t it? I enjoyed Replica as well and I’m not sure if I thought the ending for it was a cliffhanger (compared to some of the other cliffhangers I had to live with it wasn’t a bad one) or more a way of building up to an amazing story in the next book, you know?
Yes the intertwining POVs was probably my favourite part of Replica, and Pete was brilliant as well, I think my favourite character was Callum (not sure in the spelling of his name, it’s something like that right?) 😀

      1. I honestly don’t remember the ending. XDD I’ll have to read some parts again before Ringer comes out!

The intertwining POVs was so cool! Especially because I read it alternating. And oh, Lyra’s love interest? Yeah, he was cool!

      2. I’ll have to do the same thing! I feel like before reading next books in series I should go back and re-read the ending of the previous one.
I’ll be reading Ringer in alternating POVs, when I read Replica I read Lyra’s story first and then Gemma’s, going to have to try it another way for the second book. 🙂

  4. I am eager to see how this will play out. I really liked the first one, and was sort of perturbed when I realized it was not a stand alone. But I have the second book and am ready to see how this ends. Great pick!
