The Cookie Book Tag

Of all the tags I’ve taken part in since I started blogging food tags are always my favourite. This is actually my second time taking part in The Cookie Book Tag but who doesn’t love cookies, seriously is there anyone out there who doesn’t? I was tagged by Lilly at Lair of Books Blog and Ann at Ann’s Reading Corner. Thanks so much both of you for the tag, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Chocolate Chip:
A classic book that you love or really enjoyed

Interpret classic how you want, it can be a classic written 100 years ago or 20 years ago.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

This is definitely a book I interpret as a classic, and although it was only once I saw the film that I managed to get past the first few chapters of the book The Princess Bride quickly became one of my all-time favourites, both in terms of films and books.

Thin Mints:
A fandom that you really want to ‘join’ and/or a hyped-up book you want to read

Your source(s) of a book being hyped can be from anywhere.

Legend series by Marie Lu

I started this series when I was in the middle of a huge reading slump, and was unable to get past the halfway mark of the second book which will likely come as no surprise to anyone who’s been in a reading slump before. Since then however I’ve been hearing amazing things about this series so I want to start it again soon.

Legend Series

Shortbread:
An author you can’t get enough of

Laini Taylor

Her Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is one of my all-time favourites, a series that made me believe in magic and that made me fall in love with Prague before stepping foot in the city myself. Her Strange the Dreamer release was the same, and now I am waiting with bated breath to see what Laini Taylor comes out with next.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series

Samoas/Caramel DeLites:
An emotional rollercoaster

This cookie was hard…so any book that made you feel more than one emotion, strongly. The choice of emotions is up to you.

Half Lost by Sally Green

The main emotion this book made me feel was heartache, and if you’ve read this series you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about, but at the same time I felt every other emotion that came with it; devastation, horror, and hope for a happy ending. Half Lost was definitely a rollercoaster read for me.

Oreos:
A book whose cover was better than the story, or vice versa, where the story was better than the cover

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

Unfortunately while the cover for this book, and the second in the duology, was gorgeous the story itself wasn’t anywhere near as good. I wouldn’t say I had high hopes for Magonia but I was really let by how shallow the world-building seemed to me, and while Aerie was a little better it still wasn’t what I hoped it would be.

magonia-series

Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties:
A book that wasn’t what you expected

Good, bad, or just different, interpret how you wish.

Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

I wouldn’t say I had any expectations for this book, good or bad. It sounded interesting, but the fact that it had a gorgeous cover and intriguing blurb was warring with my knowledge that, in terms of sci-fi books, Defy the Stars had tough competition. Still I gave it a go and I’m so glad I did because Defy the Stars ended up being an amazing read.

Defy the Stars

Snickerdoodles:
A book you may never stop re-reading/loving

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This is actually a book I re-read a lot, at least once a year, and it’s a book I’ve yet to stop loving. Every time I pick up The Night Circus and dive back into the story, the world, and the lives of all the character there’s something new I discover which makes me love this book that little bit more.

  1. Umm…a bit of a confession to begin with: I have never seen The Princess Bride nor have I ever read the book. Shame on me, I know! Literary everyone loves this movie/book and yet I have never seen either one. I should probably change that some time soon. 😀
I really enjoyed the Legend trilogy, it was so fast paced and I very much liked the characters. Marie Lu has a way of writing very action-packed stories and I love that about her! (I seriously need to read more of her books.) I hope you end up enjoying this series as much as I did, when you give it another chance.
Thank you for tagging me ❤ but I have just recently done this tag (like last month). 😀

    1. Gasp, Anna I am shocked but at the same time it took me a little while to get around to both myself as well. Are you planning to pick up the DVD/book soon then? I really hope you enjoy both whenever you do. 🙂
Legend is on my to-read list for the end of this month, hopefully, or very soon at least. I’ve heard such incredible things about it so can’t really wait to get started again.
That’s all right, and oh that’s a shame but thanks for commenting either way. 🙂 ❤

      1. I think I will watch the movie first in any case. I don’t know, the book just doesn’t interest me that much. And if I like the movie I can always pick up the book! 😀

  2. This is such a fun little tag! Who doesn’t love cookies? Especially girl scout cookies? 😉 I can never get enough of Laini Taylor either. Her writing is just so potent and lyrical. I need to finish up the DOSAB trilogy. I just have to read Dreams of Gods & Monsters and I’ll be all caught up with her works! 😀 I’m sorry Magonia didn’t quite live up to expectations. The cover and blurb made it seem so promising. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, either. I haven’t been able to finish it :/ Although your reviews of it and its sequel kind of make me want to give it another go. Defy the Stars sounds like a book I need to put on my TBR. I’d love to have more sci-fis on my list! As you know, I’m always 100% supportive of your choice for the last category. The Night Circus will forever be a favorite of mine, too! And oh lord, please don’t remind me of that ending of Half Lost. That book was just so painful. An emotional roller coaster, indeed LOL. Fantastic picks, Beth! 😀

    1. It really is, and I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t like cookies?! Oh Dreams of Gods and Monsters is a brilliant book Azia, I’m sure you’ll love it and I can’t wait to see your review for it once you have. She’s an incredible author so I can’t wait for her next release.
Unfortunately Magonia just wasn’t for me. Sounds like it wasn’t for you either so I guess you know how I feel about that one.
Defy the Stars is brilliant, and if you’re looking for more sci-fi books I’d definitely recommend it. The Night Circus is just beyond amazing isn’t it? And oh Half Lost is horribly heartbreaking. I still get upset now thinking about how it ended! Thanks Azia 😀 ❤

      1. I certainly hope not! Cookies are heaven 🙂 And I don’t doubt Of Gods and Monsters is fantastic. Laini Taylor is far too talented to release a lacklustre book haha.
Yeah, Magonia is still a “should I or shouldn’t I” book for me. I want to give it a chance because of the cover but the story inside sounds a bit too unsatisfying if your reviews are anything to go by :/
I don’t think we’ll ever get over Half Lost. It was just so heartbreaking 😦 Meaning it was a very good book haha. No worries! ❤

      2. I think Dreams of Gods and Monsters was my favourite of the series, which considering how amazing the series is is saying something.
If you decide to give it a chance and have lower expectations you may actually end up enjoying it a little more. You never know. 🙂
A very good book, but still very very heartbreaking. ❤

      3. That definitely IS saying something! I LOVED the second book. So, for the third book to be even better than that blows my mind 🙂
        And possibly! Who knows 🙂
I have to buy the Half Bad series. I read them from the library but I’d love to have them on my shelves ❤

      4. I find I largely enjoy last books of series more than second books. I’ll be interested to see if you agree with my thoughts on Dreams of Gods and Monsters.
I have them on my shelves. I largely read Kindle editions but for books I love it’s worth having a physical copy too! 🙂 ❤️

      5. That’s usually the case with me, too! Some series suffer from the middle book syndrome. I’ll let ya know what I think of Dreams when I finally manage to read it!
And it really is worth it! I’ll gift them to myself on my blogiversary maybe LOL

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Yeah, it definitely depends on the author. Lately, I haven’t run into that many sequels that suffer from Second Book Syndrome, so that’s wonderful!

  3. I absolutely LOVE Laini Taylor!! Isn’t her work just so amazing!! And I also have The Night Circus on my tbr! I’ve heard some really amazing things, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading it! Great picks 🙂

    1. She is such an incredible author, honestly I don’t know how she comes up with the ideas she does but I hope she never stops. 🙂
Oh The Night Circus is a beautiful book Lauren, it’s one I’d highly recommend so I really hope you enjoy it! 😀

  4. Love this tag! Laini Taylor is SUCH a talented author, I loved her books! I reaaaaaally need to read Strange the Dreamer though haha. And ooh yes I totally agree with Magonia! It wasn’t horrible, but it didn’t really meet my expectations considering how excited I was for it and how gorgeous that cover is haha. I’ve been debating whether or not to read Aerie honestly.. I’m sorry to hear it didn’t quite redeem the series! Loved reading your answers. 🙂

    1. Oh this was such a fun tag. Yes Laini Taylor is amazing, I hope she never stops writing because all her books are just wonderful aren’t they? Strange the Dreamer is brilliant and I hope you really love it Analee.
Given how amazing the cover was, and how good the blurb sounded too, I expected so much more from Magonia and was really disappointed. No I couldn’t really recommend Aerie, especially not after hearing you were disappointed with Magonia as well.
      Thanks so much! 😀 ❤

    1. Really?! God I’m not sure how you’re doing that Donna, I don’t eat much chocolate but going completely without for 16 weeks would be too much for me!
That’s all right, I’ll be interested to see your answers for this one, and hopefully it will keep your mind off the no chocolate too! 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Oh that sucks. I can’t have a lot of chocolate because something in it gives me really bad headaches, but I can eat a little in moderation. Hopefully the time will go quickly and you’ll be able to eat some chocolate again soon. 🙂

  5. Lovely answers, Beth! I haven’t read the Legend series either, but started Marie Lu’s other series, The Young Elites. I only read the first book so far but I really enjoyed it, Marie Lu is such a great writer. I’m both impatient to continue reading that one and maybe read Legend as well 🙂
I need to read Laini Taylor’s books, I keep hearing fantastic things about her, but I’m not sure where to start – with Strange the Dreamer, or her other books? 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀 ❤ Oh that's great to hear about The Young Elites, I have that on my to-read list as well but want to/need to read the Legend books first. I've heard amazing things about Marie Lu in general so I feel like I'm guaranteed to love her books, you probably are too Marie. 🙂
I'd highly highly recommend Laini Taylor's books, she's one of my all-time favourite authors. I'd say the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series first, simply because at least that's a finished series. You'll hopefully love Strange the Dreamer as well but it's going to be a long wait for book two I think. 🙂

  6. I adore Laini Taylor’s writing style so much. She is so incredibly creative! I can’t wait for the second part of Strange the Dreamer and I need to finished the DoSaB series. I really need to read Defy the Stars, Half Bad and (especially) The Night Circus too!! Thanks for the tag, Beth 😀 Now I really want a cookie 😂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Same here, I don’t know how she comes up with the stories she does but I hope she never stops because I just can’t get enough! Oh neither can I, it’s going to be a long way for book two but you know it will 100% be worth it.
Oh all three of those books/series are highly recommended ones for me, especially The Night Circus, seriously if you’re stuck on what one to pick first go for The Night Circus! 😀
That’s all right, and in that case there’s nothing stopping you from eating a cookie. 🙂 ❤

  7. Oh yay! This is one of my most fave tags & you’re right cuz it always makes me HUNGRY! 😂 it always leaves me smiling how similar we are with book taste? I know I can always come to your page for awesome recommendations*high fives ya* 💕I am most def re-reading The Night Circus in December & cant wait to go back to one of my top fave setting 🙌🏼 I’m also really glad I dodged a billet with Magonia, was so close to getting that one lol. So glad we both LOVED Defy the Stars. Great answers Beth, please get yourself some cookies (my fave Chocolate chip 😜)🍪 it’s a sin to go w/out haha.

    1. I love this tag as well, pretty much for the same reasons. I feel you need cookies by your side when writing this one! 😀 Ha, at least I know these are good book picks in that case.
Oh see I only re-read The Night Circus in March but I’ve been talking about it so much recently (it seems) that I kind of want to go back and re-read it again. I thought Magonia was all right, I just expected more from it so was a little disappointed. Yeah Defy the Stars was brilliant, I cannot wait for book two of that series to be released.
Thanks so much Lilly, and yeah I really need to go out and buy some cookies ASAP! 😀 ❤

  8. You haven’t read the Legend trilogy yet??? For shame. XD Just kidding, but I hope you read it soon! Marie Lu is a fantastic writer! I definitely agree with Laini Taylor and The Night Circus; I love the both of them! ❤ I still have Defy the Stars and the Half Bad trilogy on my TBR, so I'm so glad to see you love them! Hopefully, I'll eventually get to them! 😀

    1. Ahh, see you may be kidding Mikaela but I’m not when I say I should be ashamed. I can’t believe it’s still on my to-read list, especially because I really loved the first book in the series and have since been hearing a lot about how amazing a writer Marie Lu really is. 🙂
They’re amazing books aren’t they? And actually so are Defy the Stars and the Half Bad trilogy so I’d highly recommend the both Mikaela, and I hope you get around to them soon too! 😀

  9. Ah, darn, now I want cookies! XD

Anyways, I love this tag! DEFINITELY read the Legend trilogy — it is SOOOOO amazing and I love the characters so so much. ❤ I'm reading Strange the Dreamer right now and it's… okay? I'm not very far haha. I think I'll like Lazlo, but all this prose… Daughter of Smoke and Bone was pretty good to me. Then Days of Blood and Starlight was okay. And I DNFed Dreams of Gods and Monsters. I think it's just her style of writing? And the strange names and such. IT WAS JUST TOO MUCH.

I want to read Defy the Stars, so I'm glad you thought that was a good read! And ahgahghagh The Night Circus I've been waiting to be available at my library, but not yet! Soon, though, soon. 😛

    1. Oh so do I! And I haven’t had a cookie in ages so the craving is real right now! 😀
I’m hoping to get around to it before the month is over. Since I started blogging I’ve heard some great things about it, and I loved what I read before the slump hit me, so it’s a priority right now.
Oh that’s a shame, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed Strange the Dreamer gets better for you May. Laini Taylor’s writing style can be hard to get into I think, but I dunno I just love it.
Defy the Stars was brilliant, and so is The Night Circus. I will recommend that book to anyone and everyone so I hope your libraries copy becomes available soon for you! 😀

      1. Well after some of the comments on this post I want to try and read it this month at the very least. I have writers who’s writing I find it hard to really get into. Guess it’s just down to personal preference isn’t it? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I think I get what you mean, there are a few authors whose writing styles I’ve really loved but at times it’s been so hard for me to get into the books. It’s almost like you have to focus more to fully feel immersed in the story. 🙂

    1. Tags like these inspired by food always make me hungry, and I haven’t had any cookies in ages which I think just makes it worse! 🙂
Yes, you need to get around to The Night Circus Meghan. I have full faith you will but it’s an all-time favourite of mine so I kind of want everyone to read it and love it as much as I do. 😀
