Andie has a plan and she always sticks to the plan.

Future? A top tier medical school.

Dad? Avoid as much as possible (which isn’t that hard considering he’s a Congressman and never around).

Friends? Palmer, Bri, and Toby—pretty much the most awesome people on the planet, who needs anyone else?

Relationships? No one’s worth more than three weeks.

So it’s no surprise she’s got her summer all planned out too.

Until a political scandal cancels her summer pre-med internship, and lands both her and Dad back in the same house for the first time in years. Suddenly she’s doing things that aren’t Andie at all—working as a dog walker, doing an epic scavenger hunt with her dad and maybe, just maybe, letting the super cute Clark in closer than expected. Palmer, Bri and Toby tell her to embrace all the chaos, but here’s the thing…can she?

My Thoughts On…

…The Plot

“The idea that you could rethink the thing you’d always thought you wanted and change your plan—it was almost a revolutionary concept. That you could choose what would make you happy, not successful.”

When a political scandal means her father has to stop working for the summer it’s the start of all of Andie’s carefully laid plans falling apart. After actively avoiding each other ever since her mother died Andie and her father are occupying the same space for the first time in years, and due to the scandal Andie soon discovers the hard earned pre-med internship she has planned for the summer falling through.

Desperate to find a job so there isn’t a hole in her CV Andie takes the last available position she can find, and starts walking dogs. However even though this summer is falling short of Andie’s expectations it’s not all bad. For the first time in years Andie and her three best friends – Palmer, Bri and Toby – are all in the same town at the same time, meaning there will be plenty of opportunities for them to spend time together in between their respective jobs.

“DAD!” I screamed as I barrelled into the house, Toby at my heels. A second later, I realised how that sounded. “Everything is fine!” I yelled a moment later. There was no need to give my father a heart attack.
“No, it’s not!” Toby yelled, though a little less loudly than me. “We need help!”
“What’s going on?”

There’s also Clark, a really cute client from Andie’s new job walking dogs, who could end up being something more. The only problem is he wants to be let in closer than Andie has ever let anyone in before, and she’s not sure how to do that. Also with her dad spending more and more time at home, his work unable to take him away his summer, it could be the perfect opportunity for him and Andie to repair their relationship; if they can work out how.

The Unexpected Everything is definitely a perfect YA contemporary read for summer. The story had everything that I love in contemporary books; great characters and even better friendships, a sweet romance, an interesting family dynamic, and above all it made me crave the kind of summer days Andie was spending with her friends and Clark. The plot was enough to get me interested, but it was the individual characters and their relationships that had me hooked on The Unexpected Everything.

…The Characters

“I could do this. If whole galaxies could change, so could I.”

Andie has spent most of her life conforming to some kind of plan. Her father is a Congressman, and as everything Andie does is a reflection on him every action she takes has to be carefully thought out so it doesn’t impact his career negatively. Andie is very similar to her father in a lot of ways. She has a plan set out for almost every aspect of her life, and it’s only when her pre-med internship falls through that she starts to realise how fun it can be not having a plan for once in her life.

After losing her mother at a young age Andie and her father drifted apart. Her father’s career came first, and he was often away for business leaving Andie with a revolving door of different and distant family members. The two of them no longer know how to speak to one another and it makes for a lot of uncomfortable silences as they are alone in the same house for the first time in years. There are time when Andie clashes with her father, too used to her own independence to follow the rules he tries to set out for her, but the more time they spend together the more you see them find their own rhythm for their relationship.

“And as I touched his cheek and his hand tightened on my waist, I leaned forward to kiss him again, knowing as I did that something was ending while something else had already begun.”

When she meets Clark Andie has a standard way of running her relationships. She spends three weeks with her boyfriend’s before dumping them, and never opens up to any of them. Clark however wants to know the real Andie. He doesn’t follow her hints about things she doesn’t want to discuss and instead pushes her to be honest with him, to make their relationship deeper which is something Andie isn’t used to doing.

“Wait,” Toby said, talking over her as she looked around at all of us. “So this means all you guys are off, like, rounding the bases and I’m still in the dugout. I’m the person selling Cracker Jack in the stands.”
“This metaphor is getting weird,” Palmer murmured to me.

The best part of this book for me was the friendship between Andie, Palmer, Bri and Toby. The three of them have been close friends for years and you can see that close friendship in all of their interactions. Everything Andie needs to do to conform to her father’s position has already been ingrained in Palmer, Bri and Toby, and their text conversations were so much fun to read, full of inside jokes and emojis. The three of them share everything, and between boys, boyfriends and jobs they make time for one another whenever needed.

It took me ages to get around to The Unexpected Everything, but in the end it was a book that was well worth the wait. This is a really cute story and one perfect for a sunny afternoon when you have nothing else planned. The relationship between Andie and Clark was cute, but it was the incredible friendships and the cute dogs that kept me reading this book.

What did you think of The Unexpected Everything? Was it a favourite of yours or could you just not get into the story? Let me know.

  1. I absolutely enjoy reading this book too so Im glad I get to read through your post.At first when I buy the book I thought it was going to be like most of the typical romance books where there is more interaction between the boy and girl. But once I got really deep in it I discovered that focus more on the characters and his friends, and how she is going too accept the change in her life.In a way I identify myself in this book because I also have three best friends and I can say sometimes is not easy but true firendship is always worth it.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this book, and really glad you enjoyed my post as well! 🙂 That kind of thing is what I love about all of Morgan Matson’s book, they may have a great romance but sometimes it takes a backseat to the friendships and the individual characters which is nice to see as well. No I know what you mean, but that made it even better in a way to see those true friendships represented in this book because it feels like sometimes you don’t always see them. 🙂

  2. So glad to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed this! It’s definitely one of those contemporaries that fans of Morgan Matson couldn’t wait to pick up. The relationship is probably the key to good contemporaries too. Pretty sweet that the author nailed it in this one. 😀 Great review!

    1. Yeah this was a great book, and I can see why so many fans of Morgan Matson were eager to pick this book up as well. For me it’s relationships and characters that are key in contemporary stories and Morgan Matson definitely nails both.
      Thanks Lashaan! 😀

      2. It really is, and it’s great to see them in YA books too though I still think we need more! Oh I loved the text message stuff, it was a great way to develop their friendship more but in a slightly different way.
I think I only have one more Morgan Matson book on my to-read list, Second Change Summer. Hopefully I’ll be able to get around to that one soon! 😀

  3. I’m so happy you loved this book, Beth! The friendships were, for sure, one of the highlights of this story. It was so good to see tight friendships like that in contemporary books, and it seemed to me like the focus here was both on family, relationship and friendships, which I loved 🙂

Yes there seemed to be a lot of focus on Andie’s relationships with everyone in this book, and it was all so well developed and written. 😀 ❤️

    1. Morgan Matson has written some incredible friendships in all her books. Good friends are needed in YA in general but they’re already there in Morgan Matson’s books! 🙂
Ha, yeah I was hooked at cute dogs too, there are so many in this book! 🙂
      Thanks Donna. 😀 ❤️

  4. Yaaaaay!!! I’m so glad you loved it! Contemporary reads are always fun to read during the summer. This one seems like the perfect companion to a bright sunny day on the beach haha. It’s good to hear that Matson manages to establish wonderful relationships/friendships among the characters and that the characters themselves are really well-developed. That’s always something I’m looking for in any type of book, though especially for contemporaries. This book sounds so cute and fluffy and exactly the type of book I need right now. I guess I’ll be ordering this one today or tomorrow! Nice review, Beth! 😀

    1. They really are, and this was pretty much the perfect read for summer as well! I get through most of the contemporary books on my TBR list when the sun is shining because it just seems like the perfect time to pick them up.
Morgan Matson is amazing at writing and developing both her characters and their relationships with one another. It’s something I always look for in books too and I think it’s especially important in contemporary books like this one.
Definitely cute, definitely fluffy, and definitely a book you need right now! Thanks so much Azia! 😀 ❤️

I can’t wait to get to this one. And I can’t wait to read your thoughts on her other works, too! ❤ 🙂

  5. It’s one of my favorite books! I love how MM carves some lovely and awesome/unique relationships and friendships! I really do love the dogs, especially Bert. He’s so cute!

I love how Morgan Matson brings about Andie’s change and shows us how she learns to love. I can’t forget about the text messages though! The dare Palmer gives Toby is so funny! After, I read it, I actually tried texting in emojis myself!

I never realized that Andie was like her father though. Your thoughts are perfect in this post. It really was a lovely read and review!

    1. Honestly it’s become one of my favourite contemporary books as well! MM is such an incredible author and so far all her books have been amazing stories with even greater characters!
Oh I loved Bert, and all the dogs actually, and yes Andie’s character development was incredible as well. Oh my god I wouldn’t have been able to text solely in emojis. For one my friends and family would have never understood me and two I don’t even use them that much to start with!
Thanks so much, that’s great to hear! 🙂 ❤️

  6. I loved The Unexpected Everything! It’s not my favorite Morgan Matson book but it was still really fun to read. One of my favorite things about the book was all the emojis that were within the book. It made the book so much better. You should totally go and give ‘Second Chance Summer’ a chance, which is my favorite Morgan Matson book, because it is so beautiful.

    1. It is a great book, but yeah it’s not my favourite by her (for me it’s Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour.)
Ha, yeah the one in her text conversations with Toby right. I really loved reading those parts because it was an interesting way to further develop their friendship.
Second Chance Summer is the last book by Morgan Matson still on my TBR list, hopefully I’ll be able to get around to it soon in that case! 🙂

  7. Ah, yes, I want to read this! I’m glad that this book was about friendship, because we definitely need more platonic relationships in YA! Relationships are cute, but something about JUST FRIENDS is enticing. And DOGS! DOGS! I LOVE DOGS! I want one, but I’m allergic. *cries*

Also, I like the way that you describe Clark and Andie’s relationship! It sounds like a really good one, one I’d enjoy reading about. Lovely review, Beth! ❤

    1. I’d definitely recommend this book May, Morgan Matson is an amazing author and though I haven’t read all her books yet I’ve loved all the ones I have read.
      😀
Yeah there was a romance in this book but there’s also plenty of platonic friendships as well, which were so brilliant to read. I agree we need more. Oh no! Well you can live vicariously through this book because there were plenty of cute dogs! 🙂
It is, everything about this book was great. Thanks so much May! 😀 ❤️
