Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books from X Genre That I’ve Recently Added to my TBR List.
I gave this week’s theme a little bit of a twist, and instead I went for Top Ten Books I Added to my TBR List Last Year; Five I Will be Reading and Five I Won’t be Reading. I’ll admit I’m terrible when it comes to keeping track of the books on my to-read list. Then again that’s what comes of having quarter of my TBR list on one Goodreads account, quarter on another Goodreads account, and half in my head.
Five Books I Will be Reading
Kingdom of Ash and Briars by Hannah West
For some reason, despite being really excited for this book in the run up to its release and despite hearing some great things about it, I keep forgetting Kingdom of Ash and Briars is on my to-read list. I am making this a priority of mine, one I will be getting around to this year.
Dreamology by Lucy Keating
I added this book to my to-read list around the same time I read The Love That Split the World, and for some reason the two books are now linked in my mind. They don’t sound similar but I am convinced that because I loved The Love That Split the World I’ll love Dreamology as well.
The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine
There have been plenty of amazing reviews for this book, praising the unique world and concept Sarah Fine has created, so The Impostor Queen is definitely staying on my to-read list. Plus if this book is anything like the other one by Sarah Fine I’ve read it’ll be a five star read for me.
Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke
I’ve seen a fair few mixed reviews for this book but there’s something about the cover that keeps drawing me in, likely the fact that it’s a stunningly gorgeous cover. Also Wink Poppy Midnight is a magical realism story, a genre I am desperate to read more from.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
After reading and loving Since You’ve Been Gone I added all of Morgan Matson’s books to my to-read list, with the expectation of starting The Unexpected Everything once it was released. I’m really not sure what happened but this book is at the top of summer TBR list for this year.
Five Books I Won’t be Reading
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
There have been a few mixed reviews for this book, and the majority of the negative ones have said it was a story that was slow to start. Normally I don’t mind that as long as there’s something else to keep me interested, but reading the blurb there’s nothing that really interests me anymore.
The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins
I almost think that reverse hype worked on this book. As a fairytale retelling I automatically added The Great Hunt to my to-read list, then heard nothing more about it. I haven’t seen any reviews and it just kind of faded to the back of my mind because no one’s been talking about it.
Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge
This is another one which I think was affected by reverse hype. Add to that the fact that the majority of the reviews I’ve seen are negative, and that as a Romeo and Juliet retelling it’s not really at the top of my list Bright Smoke, Cold Fire is not a book I’ll be picking up.
Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell
Despite being another retelling (which kind of defeats what I said about picking up any retelling book regardless) I’m not planning on reading Unhooked. Plus I’ve had bad luck with Peter Pan retellings, all the ones I’ve previously picked up I’ve ended up not enjoying.
Flawed by Cecelia Ahern
Dystopian books tend to be a bit hit and miss for me, more miss than hit actually. While Gilded Cage did renew my interest in the genre a lot of dystopian books still feel to generic, which is what put me off the genre in the first place, and Flawed is one of those books.

I’ve heard great things about Dreamatology! Especially in terms of its evocative uniqueness and powerful imagery. I’ve been super entranced with Haruki Murakami’s novels lately, so I haven’t personally been able to read it yet, but I look forward to getting to read it soon! Let me know what you think! 🙂

Same here, it seems like since I published this TTT post I’ve heard non-stop amazing things about it which has made me want to pick it up immediately!

Nice twist on the theme! Wink Poppy Midnight’s cover is gorgeous! I’d definitely keep that one on my TBR too, just for that cover haha. I hope you enjoy the story as well. And I’ve heard about The Imposter Queen, although I don’t know much about the plot. I’ll have to check that one out, but I think I’ve already added it to my GR to-read shelf. And I really hope you enjoy The Unexpected Everything! I see you’ve posted your review but I haven’t read it yet. I’ve put the book in my cart and I was going to order it this week but I’ll read your review first to make sure I really want it; although, I’m sure it’s just as good as her other ones that I’ve read 😀 I was really considering Truthwitch for a while, too, but the reviews have kind of scared me away. Same for Bright Smoke, Cold Fire. The mixed/negative reviews are a bit worrisome, so I think it might be okay to skip them. Also, I recently read the blurb for Flawed and while I was interested, I don’t think I’m quite in the mood to return to the dystopian genre just yet, especially if is a potentially generic story. Thanks so much Azia. Yeah I needed something a little different considering most of the books I’ve added to my TBR list recently are books I’ve mentioned a few times before on my blog!
I’ve heard some good things about Wink Poppy Midnight from people commenting on this post, and I’d previously heard great things about The Impostor Queen so I can’t wait to get around to both. I hope you end up enjoying both as well Azia. 🙂
Ha, yeah I did end up really enjoying The Unexpected Everything. I know by the time you read this comment you will have checked out my review and will have likely brought the book as well but it’s probably one you’ll really want! In my opinion it’s just as good as her others (though I still have Second Chance Summer on my TBR list.
When I first added Truthwitch and Bright Smoke Cold Fire they sounded amazing, unfortunately time and negative reviews have since changed my mind on both. I’ve heard some good things about Flawed I’ll admit but yeah not massively into the dystopian genre at the moment myself either, maybe one day that will change but at the moment I don’t think it will.

Everyone I know that read Flawed loved it, but it’s your choice! It’s hard to read them all!

I actually have none of these books on my TBR except Flawed. I don’t know what that says about me. XD I guess I’m not interested in the concepts of many of them (which is funny, because I have SO MANY 2016 releases on my TBR. I guess they’re more underrated?). But they do have gorgeous covers; I have to give them that. 😀

I guess we all have different reading tastes, and you may end up really loving Flawed as well but at the moment it just isn’t my thing at all. The ones I left on my to-read list are books where I am interested in the concept but I guess they’re not for everyone.
You can kind of tell based on what books are on my to-read list how influenced by pretty covers I actually am! 😀

Great list, Beth! I added Dreamology to my TBR so long ago I forgot about it until just now ahah – but it sounds like a great and fun story, definitely one I shouldn’t forget to read now ahah 🙂 I’m also so, so happy to hear you’re keeping The Unexpected Everything on your list of books to read soon, it was such a great story, perfect for summertime, and I’m certain you will love the relationships dynamics in that one! 🙂

Guys you really SHOULD read Dreamology. I’ve heard of some people who didn’t like it too much and were kind of meh about it, and while I wouldn’t say it was AMAAAZING, it’s definitely worth the read, entertaining and interesting! And Marie is soo right with TUA. It’s the epitome of a thougtful but classy summer read!

Well that settles it then, I definitely need to move Dreamology up my to-read list and onto my summer TBR list! 😀 Despite the meh reviews I’ve seen everyone who’s read it who’s commented on this post has loved it. 🙂
I feel like summer is going to be when I get the majority of the contemporary books still on my TBR list actually read. 🙂

Thanks so much Marie. Ha yeah Dreamology was one I almost forgot about until I was finding books for this post. Now I feel like I need to get around to it soon! It does sound good, here’s hoping it lives up to our expectations!
I’ve actually read The Unexpected Everything, but it was on my to-read list for so long it deserved a mention in this post still. Plus no matter how long her books stay on my TBR list Morgan Matson will be an author I just have to read! 😀

I’ve been meaning to read Wink Poppy Midnight for SO long. I honestly don’t know why I haven’t yet because it seems exactly like the kind of contemporary that I LOVE. I tried reading The Unexpected Everything last year but couldn’t get into it?? I wanna try again though because I know how much everyone loves Morgan Matson!!

It’s been on my TBR list for so long and I have no clue why I haven’t gotten around to it either. There are mixed reviews for it but again it seems like the kind of book I’d love too. Hopefully one day we’ll both be able to get around to this one then. 😀
Oh that’s a shame. I’ve loved the Morgan Matson books I’ve read, maybe if you give them another go you’ll end up really enjoying them. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that turns out to be the case for you. 🙂

Nice picks! I can definitely see why those 5 will be read, while the others not. I also have the feeling that the 5 you’ll be reading are quite well received by the community too! Like.. more than the other 5. Got to admit that the TBR is one twisted world. Everytime I add a book, I have the impression I’ll be reading it soon. Then.. one year later.. I still see 80% of them still in my TBR!

Thanks so much Lashaan. Yeah the five I picked to keep on my TBR list are definitely ones I am still very much interested in and ones I can see myself getting around to, hopefully sometime soon. God I know that feeling. I add so many books to my to-read list with every intention of reading them soon, or once they’re released, but then I look again and some of them are years old I still haven’t gotten around to. Still one day, at least that’s what I keep telling myself! 😀

I really like what you did with this week’s topic. I adore The Unexpected Everything, and even though you don’t plan on reading Unhooked, I loooove that one too. I’ve seen Truthwitch around so much, and I really have no interest in reading it either. There’s just so many iffy things said.

Thanks so much. The genres I normally read that I’ve added to my TBR list I feature loads, so I wanted to do something at least a little different.
Morgan Matson is just an amazing author, and yeah unfortunately Unhooked just doesn’t seem like my kind of thing anymore. I blame too many so-so Peter Pan retellings for that! 🙂
For me Truthwitch just has too many iffy reviews to still interest me, especially after all this time.

Great list, Beth!! 😁 So many of these have been sitting on my TBR for the past year too. I remember stumbling across Dreamology back before it first released because it was all over Instagram and I thought it sounded really interesting but then I never read it. I actually don’t even remember what it’s about since it’s been so long but I still want to read it. Mostly because the cover and title always intrigued me lol. And the same goes for Wink Poppy Midnight! The cover and title. I don’t think I’ll get to either anytime soon but one of these days. And then The Unexpected Everything! I need to read that one sometime this summer because I’ve incredible things about both the author and the book. Didn’t you actually read that one recently? I think I remember seeing you did on GR but can’t remember. And then with Truthwitch, that one was never on my TBR because it was everywhere before it released and even though it was all of the things I kept seeing were negative. That made me steer well clear of it. And then same about Flawed. Even though Gilded Cage has brought something fresh to the dystopia genre that’s one I probably won’t get around to either for the fact that I’m still burnt out on dystopias for the most part. That and I think I’ve seen some mixed things about it too. 🙈

I’m not really sure how I discovered Dreamology, even now I still don’t see much about it, but I just can’t bring myself to remove it from my TBR list. Oh for me Wink Poppy Midnight is all about the cover, I mean yeah the blurb sounds intriguing but it’s mainly the gorgeous cover that keeps me coming back to it.
Yeah I did read The Unexpected Everything recently but it’s been on my TBR list for so long I kind of had to include it in this post as well! It’s an amazing book Melissa, one I’m sure you’ll love as well.

That’s all right! 😀 I think also just because we end up with so many books on our TBR lists we can’t really be expected to remember all of them can we? Some of them we’re bound to forget we added until we go back and look through out TBR lists again. 😀
It really does, and honestly even after reading the blurb I’m still not 100% sure what it’s about.
I’d highly recommend it, now I’ve read more of Morgan Matson’s books I can see why so many people love her as a contemporary author. She’s amazing. Exactly, kind of makes me think each year I should do some kind of TBR list sort out and get rid of the books I’m no longer interested in.

I’ve read Wink Poppy Midnight and it was so unique. It is super strange but so captivating and unlike anything I’ve ever read before! I highly suggest it because I think it is out of everyones “normal reads” box!!! Let me know how you like it once you read it!

I ended up adding 4 of your “won’t be reading” to my TBR lol! I’m a sucker for retellings, so I find I’m still drawn to them, even when the reviews aren’t that great.

The Impostor Queen is new to me but it sounds very good. I’m with you on Wink Poppy Midnight too. There’s just something about it that makes me want to read it in spite of the mixed reviews.

I love your twist on this theme! Out of these, I’ve only read Impostor Queen (which I loved), but there are several here that I’d PLANNED on reading and haven’t gotten to. Maybe won’t? For instance, Flawed and Hooked both sort of fall into that category for me.

I’ve read Truthwitch and I honestly wish i hadn’t. I was fine with the pacing but the world is so unimaginative. I remember showing the map to my mum who stared blankly at it before saying “Whoever drew that map of Europe doesn’t know it very well.” And there’s like a ton of place names that sound almost the same as real European ones. (I could go on…)
I stil have to read The Unexpected Everything, too! It’s been on my shelf since I bought it at a used bookshop last year and I never seem to get around to it…

And yeah I love world building in fantasy books, for me it’s one of the most important parts, so it has to be done well and based on your comment it wasn’t at all in Truthwitch. I’m glad now I’ve removed this book from my to-read list! 🙂

I really liked this twist! I have only read Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson (she wrote that one right??!!) but I really want to read more. I have been seeing The Unexpected Everything everywhere lately and I really want to get in to it this summer!

Dreamology has always called my attention! I hope to read that one also one day.
I read The Great Hunt and didn’t think it was amazing, I definitely will not be reading the second book. Don’t blame you for taking that one out your TBR, you aren’t missing anything at all! Yeah Lilly mentioned you weren’t a fan of The Great Hunt. I just lost interest in it somewhere along the way between adding it to my TBR list and now. Same with Truthwitch when it comes down to it.

I guess at least if you’re slowly clearing it down you’re still clearing it down, that seems to be better than what I’m doing at the moment which is nothing of the sort! 🙂

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Kingdom of Ash and Briars, I think it may be on one of my tbrs! 😛 I have an actual paper tbr which is what I’m trying desperately to follow, and I have an email tbr from goodreads, which is where I pick the books to go on the paper tbr!

It’s the same for me, but for some reason I’ve just never managed to get around to it. Kingdom of Ash and Briars seems to be one of those books I forget is on my TBR list until I spot it there again looking through my GR profile.
Sounds like a good way to manage your TBR lists, I just have one TBR list spread across three or four different places, makes it really hard to try and manage anything about it! 🙂

I’ve heard The Imposter Queen has some good reviews too, I think I’m going to check it out! I feel the same about dystopians.. they just all seem the same to me! (with the exception of a few)

The Impostor Queen! I’ve had that on my physical shelf for FAR TOO LONG Beth! lol & have heard such amazing things about that authors world building, not sure why I haven’t gotten around to it yet but thanks for the reminder lol. I actually have Truthwitch as well & have read the reviews but ever since reading Manon’s character in Throne Of Glass series, I really do want more witches in my life haha! so I’ll be giving Truthwitch a shot. Gretchen read/reviewed the Great Hunt & that was enough for me to toss it cuz no, I was not a fan of certain things found in that book. This is a great list Beth! happy reading 😉

Agh, I have Wink Poppy Midnight checked out and I’m super excited to read it! I checked it out a long time ago, but wasn’t that interested to actually started. And mwahahaha I put The Unexpected Everything on my TBR after hearing you talk about Morgan Matson. 😛 And (I think) I just added The Impostor Queen to my TBR on GR! It sounds really good and I’ve heard it has some nice diversity. It’s a retelling, isn’t it??? I don’t even know anymore. XD
Yeah, I was kind of interested in Truthwitch and Flawed… but not. There are some books that I’m just like “maybe???” on reading, so I just don’t put it on my TBR. Makes me feel better about the size of it. 😉
