Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a summer reads freebie, so I picked Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR List.

Once summer comes around I start reading the contemporaries on my TBR list. After all there’s nothing better than sitting on the beach or in my garden, the sun shining, with a good book filled with great characters, fluffy romances, and travel all over the world. There are so many YA contemporaries on my to-read list, and even more being released it was hard to choose just ten.

Top Ten Tuesday #65

Once and For All by Sarah Dessen

For me Sarah Dessen is the ultimate YA contemporary author. I’ve loved all her books that I’ve read, and have heard amazing things about the others, so I’m sure Once and For All will be just as brilliant.

As bubbly as champagne and delectable as wedding cake, Once and for All, Sarah Dessen’s thirteenth novel, is set in the world of wedding planning, where crises are routine.

Louna, daughter of famed wedding planner Natalie Barrett, has seen every sort of wedding: on the beach, at historic mansions, in fancy hotels and clubs. Perhaps that’s why she’s cynical about happily-ever-after endings, especially since her own first love ended tragically. When Louna meets charming, happy-go-lucky serial dater Ambrose, she holds him at arm’s length. But Ambrose isn’t about to be discouraged, now that he’s met the one girl he really wants.

Sarah Dessen’s many, many fans will adore her latest, a richly satisfying, enormously entertaining story that has everything—humour, romance, and an ending both happy and imperfect, just like life itself.

Lucky in Love by Kasie West

Like Sarah Dessen Kasie West is one of my favourite YA contemporary authors. All of her books are an automatic add to my to-read list, no matter what they’re about, because I know I’m going to love them.

In this new contemporary from YA star Kasie West, a girl who wins the lottery learns that money can cause more problems than it solves, especially when love comes into the picture.

Maddie doesn’t believe in luck. She’s all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment—

She wins!

In a flash, Maddie’s life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she’s talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun…until rumours start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now, Maddie isn’t sure who she can trust.

Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming co-worker at the local zoo. Seth doesn’t seem aware of Maddie’s big news. And, for some reason, she doesn’t want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?

With tons of humour and heart, Kasie West delivers a million-dollar tale of winning, losing, and falling in love.

Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

This book sounds adorable, and I love the ‘mistaken-identity’ trope  which Alex, Approximately seems to have in abundance. Plus the reviews so far are positive which is always an added bonus.

The one guy Bailey Rydell can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet.

Classic movie fan Bailey “Mink” Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex. Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush.

Faced with doubts (what if he’s a creep in real life—or worse?), Bailey doesn’t tell Alex she’s moved to his hometown. Or that she’s landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that she’s being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Roth—a.k.a. her new archnemesis. But life is whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever it is she’s starting to feel for Porter.

And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex…Approximately.

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

I’ve seen some good reviews for this book. However what really grabs my attention is the fact that Queens of Geek is a fandom related book, which there don’t seem to be a lot of but that I want to read more of.

When BFFs Charlie, Taylor and Jamie go to SupaCon, they know it’s going to be a blast. What they don’t expect is for it to change their lives forever.

Charlie likes to stand out. SupaCon is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star, Reese Ryan. When Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.

While Charlie dodges questions about her personal life, Taylor starts asking questions about her own.

Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about the Queen Firestone SupaFan Contest, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Not only is Geekerella a fandom related book, which again there aren’t a lot of, but a fairytale retelling too. That’s all I needed to know to ensure this went to the top of my to-read list.

Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fuelled twist on the classic fairy tale.

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Changes in Latitudes by Jen Malone

I still have another Jen Malone book on my TBR list. She seems to be an author who writes plenty of travel, adventure and romance, which means I can’t wait to get started on one of her books.

Jen Malone, author of teen novels Wanderlost and Map to the Stars, will take readers to the high seas – literally – in this contemporary YA novel about a girl facing the dissolution of her parents’ marriage, a new romance, and self-discovery while sailing down the Pacific coast.

After concluding that her is to blame for her parents’ recent divorce, Cassandra McClure is hoping to stay as far away from her as possible. With a summer of freedom right around the corner, it shouldn’t be too hard. But when a forty-foot sailboat appears in her driveway and her mom announces that Cassie and her brother Drew will be accompanying her on a four-month sailing trip down to Mexico, Cassie’s plans for the summer go, quite literally, overboard.

Once the three set sail, tensions quickly rise. So meeting Jonah – a gorgeous, whip-smart deckhand – is an unexpected bright spot on an otherwise dim horizon. Though she tries to keep him at a distance – considering the upheaval of her home life – their chemistry is impossible to ignore, and Cassie soon finds herself questioning everything: Should she go for it with Jonah? Can she forgive her mom? Will home ever feel the same? With life’s unpredictable tides working against her, Cassie must decide whether to swim against them, or dive right in.

Everything All at Once by Katrina Leno

The blurb for Everything All at Once reminds me of Since You’ve Been Gone, the crazy dares taking Lottie outside of her comfort zone, but I’m very intrigued by the ‘dash of magic’ this book promises as well.

From the author of The Half Life of Molly Pierce and The Lost & Found comes a magical new YA novel about 24 dares, 3 weeks, and taking a leap into the unknown.

Lottie Reeves has always struggled with anxiety, and when her beloved Aunt Helen dies, Lottie begins to fear that her own unexpected death might be waiting around every corner.

Aunt Helen wasn’t a typical aunt. She was the author of the best-selling Alvin Hatter series, about siblings who discover the elixir of immortality. Her writing inspired a generation of readers.

In her will, she leaves one last writing project—just for Lottie. It’s a series of letters, each containing mysterious instructions designed to push Lottie out of her comfort zone. Soon, Lottie’s trying some writing of her own, leaping off cliffs, and even falling for a boy she’s only just met. Then the letters reveal an extraordinary secret about the inspiration for the Alvin Hatter series. Lottie finds herself faced with an impossible choice, one that will force her to confront her greatest fear once and for all.

This gorgeous novel is perfect for fans of Jennifer Niven, with the scavenger hunt feel of Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes, and a dash of magic that evokes Tuck Everlasting.

I See London, I See France by Sarah Mlynowski

I think this is bound to be a hilarious book, but beyond that just the description of all the countries I See London, I See France travels to is enough to make me very excited for its release.

I see London, I see France
I see Sydney’s underpants.

Nineteen-year-old Sydney has the perfect summer mapped out. She’s spending the next four and half weeks travelling through Europe with her childhood best friend, Leela. Their plans include Eiffel-Tower selfies, eating cocco gelato, and making out with très hot strangers. Her plans do not include Leela’s cheating ex-boyfriend showing up on the flight to London, falling for the cheating ex-boyfriend’s très hot friend, monitoring her mother’s spiralling mental health via texts, or feeling like the rope in a friendship tug-of-war.

In this hilarious and unforgettable adventure, New York Times bestselling author Sarah Mlynowski tells the story of a girl learning to navigate secret romances, thorny relationships, and the London Tube. As Sydney zigzags through Amsterdam, Switzerland, Italy, and France, she must learn when to hold on, when to keep moving, and when to jump into the Riviera…wearing only her polka dot underpants.

Wesley James Ruined my Life by Jennifer Honeybourn

Wesley James Ruined my Life will likely be a quick read for me, a story I can finish in one sunny afternoon. The blurb reminds me of Kasie West’s releases, a story with a fluffy romance and a fun story.

Sixteen-year-old Quinn Hardwick’s having a rough summer. Her beloved grandmother has been put into a home, her dad’s gambling addiction has flared back up and now her worst enemy is back in town: Wesley James, former childhood friend—until he ruined her life, that is.

So when Wesley is hired to work with her at Tudor Tymes, a medieval England themed restaurant, the last thing Quinn’s going to do is forgive and forget. She’s determined to remove him from her life and even the score all at once—by getting him fired.

But getting rid of Wesley isn’t as easy as she’d hoped. When Quinn finds herself falling for him, she has to decide what she wants more: to get even, or to just get over it.

A Million Junes by Emily Henry

Emily Henry’s first book was an all-time favourite of mine, a beautiful story with a heartbreaking romance, so of course I was thrilled to see she had a new release coming out and added it to the top of my TBR list.

Romeo and Juliet meets One Hundred Years of Solitude in Emily Henry’s brilliant follow-up to The Love That Split the World, about the daughter and son of two long-feuding families who fall in love while trying to uncover the truth about the strange magic and harrowing curse that has plagued their bloodlines for generations.

In their hometown of Five Fingers, Michigan, the O’Donnells and the Angerts have mythic legacies. But for all the tall tales they weave, both founding families are tight-lipped about what caused the century-old rift between them, except to say it began with a cherry tree.

Eighteen-year-old Jack “June” O’Donnell doesn’t need a better reason than that. She’s an O’Donnell to her core, just like her late father was, and O’Donnells stay away from Angerts. Period.

But when Saul Angert, the son of June’s father’s mortal enemy, returns to town after three mysterious years away, June can’t seem to avoid him. Soon the unthinkable happens: She finds she doesn’t exactly hate the gruff, sarcastic boy she was born to loathe.

Saul’s arrival sparks a chain reaction, and as the magic, ghosts, and coywolves of Five Fingers conspire to reveal the truth about the dark moment that started the feud, June must question everything she knows about her family and the father she adored. And she must decide whether it’s finally time for her – and all of the O’Donnells before her – to let go.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or what books are on your summer TBR list.

  1. Sarah Dessen is definitely one of my go-to summery, contemporary authors as well! I can’t wait for Once and For All, I think I’ll love it and I can’t wait. Same goes for Kasie West! I’ve loved every book I’ve read from her so far, and I can’t to read Lucky in Love. Queens of Geek and Geekerella as well, YES! Fandom books are so overdue haha I really need to read those asap. ❤ Lovely list, Beth!

    1. Her books are just perfect for hot weather aren’t they? Then again I guess you could say that about pretty much any YA contemporary. Once and For All and Lucky in Love are two of my highly anticipated contemporary releases, I’m sure they’ll both be amazing too!
I’ve heard great things about Queens of Geek and Geekerella so I am so excited to get around to them. Hopefully soon! 😀
      Thanks Analee! ❤

  2. This is such a great list, Beth! Contemporaries always seem to have that summer feel, even when they’re not set in summer. 😂 There’s a lot on your list that I haven’t heard of but several that are my summer reading list too. I’m beyond excited for Sarah Dessen’s and Kasie West’s new books. Both of them sound like they’re going to be so good! Although, I just need to read more of both of their books in general. I actually have another Kasie West one sitting on my Kindle that I was going to read soon but haven’t started yet. I’m contemplating between it and another book at the moment lol. And Queens of Geek is another on my list. I’ve heard so many good things about that book! I need to get around to it soon. That one along with A Quiet Kind of Thunder are two that are on the top of my contemporary list. And funny enough I saw Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett at the store the other day but didn’t read the synopsis. I am officially going to have to read that one because it has my favorite trope! I need more books where it’s all hate to love and writing letters or something before they know it’s each other. Reminds of P.S. I Like You expect less of a mystery and not hand written letters. 😊

    1. Thanks so much Melissa! 🙂 They really do, then again I can’t really think of too many contemporaries off the top of my head that aren’t set during the summer you know? I guess I’m in a summer mood at the moment so it’s what’s at the forefront of my mind. God they really do, plus I have a feeling anything Kasie West and Sarah Dessen write is bound to be amazing so I’m sure it’ll be the same for both of their new books. I’ve read all of Kasie West’s contemporaries, and hopefully I’ll be able to catch up with Sarah Dessen’s newest releases soon. I’m definitely making a decent dent in them.
I can’t wait to get started on Queens of Geek, I want to try and read that one soon because yeah I’ve heard so many good things about it too. I hope you enjoy A Quiet Kind of Thunder Melissa, and Alex, Approximately sounds amazing doesn’t it? Definitely worth checking out if it has your favourite trope in it! 😀 ❤

      1. You’re welcome, Beth!! 😃💕 I can think of three but that’s only because one of them I reread recently and another I just read a few weeks back. Even then they still had that summer feel. 😂 But yeah, beyond that there aren’t any others I can think of that aren’t set in summer. Or at least close to summer.
Same! I feel like I could never not like one of Kasie West’s or Sarah Dessen’s books. A few weeks back I was talking to Azia about how it would be incredible if V.E. Schwab, Samantha Shannon, and SJM wrote a fantasy anthology together and thinking about contemporaries I think it would be incredible if Kasie West, Sarah Dessen, and Jandy Nelson wrote a contemporary anthology together. It would be amazing!
Well, I look forward to seeing what you think about Queens of Geek! And I actually read both A Quiet Kind of Thunder and Alex, Approximately this past week. I loved both of them! AQKOT was such a cute and important read and then Alex, Approximately was just plain cute and had the perfect summer feel. I think you’ll love it. 😃 Though I have to admit that I wish the blurb was a bit more vague. I feel like it gives away too much of the book and that I would have loved it even more if I had known less going in.

      2. I can’t even think of three so you’re ahead of me there. For some reason even when they’re not set in summer contemporaries always give me that summer feel. Kind of weird but I’m not really questioning it too much.
Oh man a fantasy anthology with Samantha Shannon, Schwab and SJM would be brilliant, and so would a contemporary anthology with those authors. Here’s hoping one day our bookish prayers will be answered and we’ll get one!
Oh that’s great to hear, and in that case I need to move Alex, Approximately up my to-read list and add AQKOT. I trust your opinion when it comes to books so if you say they’re amazing then I need to get started on them ASAP! Oh that’s kind of a shame, but it sounds like you still enjoyed the books despite this. 🙂

      3. Same, contemporaries always have that summer feel about them. Though there are a few that also have that cozy winter feel, like Fangirl. 😁
Right? Here’s to hoping! Isn’t that villain anthology that’s being released soon going to have both Samantha Shannon and V.E. Schwab in it?
I hope you end up enjoying them both! I’ll definitely be keeping a lookout for your thoughts whenever you do read them. And yep, even with the blurb giving
away too much I still enjoyed it a lot. 😊💕

        Liked by 1 person

      4. There are a few winter contemporaries, I just feel there are more feel-good summer ones out there.
Yep, that is going to be one epic anthology! 😀
I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as I’ve read both then. I have Alex, Approximately on my Kindle ready to go so maybe I’ll be able to get around to it soon-ish. 🙂

  3. Fantastic list, Beth! Sarah Dessen is also my favorite author; I’m sure you’ll enjoy Once and for All. Alex, Approximately is highly anticipated release that I plan to read soon. I really enjoyed Bennett’s YA debut with The Anatomical Shape of a Heart and would recommend it if you haven’t already read it.

I haven’t read The Anatomical Shape of a Heart but I will definitely check it out, thanks for the recommendations. Maybe after finishing that one I can jump right into Alex, Approximately! 😀

    1. They really really do, and I have a while heap of contemporaries I need to get around to so this is really just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Queens of Geek, and I hope you enjoy Alex Approximately when you get around to it.
It really does, that’s a book that is pretty much my exact recipe for a perfect summer contemporary read! 😀

    1. Oh Sarah Dessen is a must read in my opinion. She is pretty much one of my all-time favourite contemporary authors, and the author whose books got me hooked on the YA contemporary genre as well. What one of hers did you read (or listen to given it was an audiobook!) Thanks! 🙂

  6. Queens of Geek and Geekerella are definitely ones that I want to read! They’re fandom-based which is like YAS because we fangirls need more representation! I’ve only read Kasie West’s Pivot Point & Split Second (a sci-fi thing), which I enjoyed! So I might pick up her contemporary novels, since I know they’re a huge hit with the blogosphere. I feel like I’ve heard of Sarah Dessen, but I don’t know any of her books by name??? *looks her up* Nope, don’t know any of her books, just her name. XD And AGH A Million Junes sounds so amazing! I’ll have to read Emily Henry’s other book.

    1. They both sound amazing don’t they? And yeah the fact that they’re fandom related is the main draw for me as well! There is definitely a need for more fandom representation.
Oh I need to pick up Kasie West’s sci-fi novels, if they’re anything like her contemporary releases I’m sure I’ll love them. Just like I’m sure you’ll love her contemporary books! 😀
Oh my god you haven’t read anything by Sarah Dessen?! She is pretty much the queen of YA contemporary in my opinion. All her books are amazing so I’d highly highly recommend reading one (or all) of her releases.
Emily Henry is an amazing author as well. I definitely can’t wait for A Million Junes! 😀

  7. I need to read so many of these! I’ve heard amazing things about Geekerella, everything all at once, queens of geek. I mean I’ve heard amazing things about all of these books basically! I think I am most excited for Queens of geek though because I’ve had it recommend to me by everyone! Hopefully I can get through some of these once my exams are finsihed! Great picks!

  8. I might have to try Queens of Geek and Once and For All! I recently discovered Sara Dessen, and I’ve loved what I’ve read of her so far. Books that are for sure on my TBR list this summer include Note to Self by Connor Franta, The Thief by Stephanie Landsem, and Till We Meet Again by Judith Krantz.

For this week’s TTT, I did a rec list of summer reads for 10 different genres. 🙂 I love your take on the theme! Seeing others’ TBRs is always so exciting.

I haven’t heard of any of these except Geekerella, which sounds ridiculously fun and cute and right up my alley. The other ones sound like great reads as well. I’ll definitely be adding them to my TBR for this summer! 😀 Also, I’ve heard a lot of people talking about Kasie West, so I’ll definitely have to pick up something by her, preferably this year haha.
