Rapid Fire Book Tag

Given that this is the ‘Rapid Fire’ book tag I tried to keep my answers short and, well, rapid. I’m not sure how well I did though because it’s in my nature to ramble on and go off on tangents whenever I talk. I was tagged by Lilly at Lair of Books Blog. Thanks so much for the tag Lilly, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

eBook or Physical Book?

I’m going to have to go with physical books. As much as I prefer reading eBooks while travelling to work (which is when I get all my reading done) it’s not the same having an extensive eBook library as it is having a physical book one.

Paperback or Hardback?

Hardbacks. I always find paperbacks really flimsy, and worry about the spine breaking or the cover getting damaged. Hardbacks are more durable and I find sometimes the design of the book itself is a little more aesthetically pleasing.

Online or In-Store Book Shopping?

Before I would have said online, but recently my answer has changed to in-store. I could spend whole afternoons browsing the shelves in my local Waterstones, also this way I don’t have to wait for the book to be dispatched and delivered, I can walk out with it the same day and start reading.

Trilogies or Series?

Trilogies. Mainly because there are less books to wait for. I am terrible at waiting for an anticipated release to be published, and it’s worth if a previous books ends on an insane cliffhanger. *Cough*AConjuringOfLight*Cough*.

Heroes or Villains?

Villains. As much as I love heroes, and do root for them, there’s always something about the villains I am more interested in reading. Bonus points if it’s a villain who I hope gets a redemption arc later in the series.

A Book You Want Everyone to Read?

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon.

There is not nearly enough love for this book on WordPress as there needs to be. It’s the start of an amazing series, the third book has just been released and with seven total there’s still a lot to come, and it seems every book that’s released gets better and better.

The Bone Season

The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing.

It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford—a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine and also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Recommend an Underrated Book?

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

I am a massive fan of magical realism, and When the Moon Was Ours was one of my favourite reads of 2016. However despite how utterly amazing this book is it still has under 2000 ratings on Goodreads. This book deserves so much more recognition and I’d love to see it get it.

When the Moon Was Ours

To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumours say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town.

But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumoured to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love. And they’re willing to use every secret Miel has fought to protect to make sure she gives them up.

The Last Book You Finished?

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

I have finally got around to re-reading the first three books in The Mortal Instruments series, which means I am one step closer to getting around to the books I haven’t read yet and finally getting around to Lady Midnight. Hopefully it will prove worth the wait.

City of Ashes

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

The Last Book You Bought?

Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

When I first saw this book on NetGalley I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I requested it anyway and I am so glad I did. Defy the Stars has become a favourite sci-fi series of mine, up there with The Illuminae Files and the Starbound series, so when it was released I had to get my own copy.

Defy the Stars

Noemi is a young and fearless soldier of Genesis, a colony planet of a dying Earth. But the citizens of Genesis are rising up—they know that Earth’s settlers will only destroy this planet the way they destroyed their own. And so a terrible war has begun.

When Noemi meets Abel, one of Earth’s robotic mech warriors, she realizes that Abel himself may provide the key to Genesis’ salvation. Abel is bound by his programming to obey her—even though her plan could result in his destruction. But Abel is no ordinary mech. He’s a unique prototype, one with greater intelligence, skill and strength than any other. More than that, he has begun to develop emotions, a personality and even dreams. Noemi begins to realise that if Abel is less than human, he is more than a machine. If she destroys him, is it murder? And can a cold-blooded murder be redeemed by the protection of a world?

Stranded together in space, they go on a whirlwind adventure through Earth’s various colony worlds, alongside the countless Vagabonds who have given up planetary life altogether and sail forever between the stars. Each step brings them closer—both to each other and to the terrible decision Noemi will have to make about her world’s fate, and Abel’s.

Weirdest Thing You’ve Used as a Bookmark?

Most of the time I will use a standard bookmark, but when I haven’t been able to find one I normally grab the first thing that comes to hand. This has included train tickets, which I’ve needed to quickly replace when I came to my stop, and even a t-shirt one time.

Used Books: Yes or No?

No. I’m very particular about my books, and I guess I like knowing that they haven’t been damaged somehow by any previous owners.

Top Three Favourite Genres?

Fantasy. This probably comes as no surprise to anyone.

Contemporary. There is so much choice to be had in terms of contemporary books, there is literally something for everyone.

Magical realism. I haven’t read much from this genre but the books I have are favourites of mine.

Borrow or Buy?

Buy. If it’s a book that becomes a favourite of mine it hurts part of my soul to have to hand it back again. Besides I have a fairly extensive collection myself and there’s nothing better than seeing the shelves fill up with my own books.

Characters or Plot?

Characters. I have read a few books where the plot has been so-so but I’ve loved it simply because of the characters. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with so-so characters that I’ve enjoyed, no matter how amazing the plot is.

Long or Short Books?

I don’t really think I have a preference, as long as a book is well written and well developed I don’t mind whether it’s 50 pages or 500. I guess if I had to choose I’d say long because there’s more time for me to fall into the world and the story, and spend with my favourite characters.

Long or Short Chapters?

Again I don’t mind, but if I had to choose I’d say short because, for some reason, I find it easier to read shorter chapters than longer ones. Also there’re more stopping points which is handy when you’re reading on a train and have about one minute to get off before missing your stop.

Name the First Three Books You Think of…

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

And I Darken by Kiersten White

Winter by Marissa Meyer

three-books

Books that Make You Laugh or Cry?

Laugh. Simply because I always prefer books that end happily when compared to books that end sad and rip out my heart.

Our World or Fictional Worlds?

Fictional worlds, no question about it. I’m still disappointed that I never got my letter to Hogwarts, that I haven’t got an invitation to Caraval, that The Night Circus never ended up in my home town, that I live in Grey London not Red.

Audiobooks: Yes or No?

I’ve never read/listened to an audiobook so I’m going to have to say no for this one.

Do You Ever Judge a Book by its Cover?

Sadly yes. I’m sure there are some amazing books out there with so-so covers that if I picked up I’d really love, but when I’m browsing for books it’s always the cover that draws my eye first and I can’t seem to switch that part of my brain off.

Book to Movie or Book to TV Adaptations?

Book to TV Adaptations. There’s a limited amount of time in a movie to develop the world, the characters and the story, whereas in a TV show you have a whole season worth of episodes to do the same thing. I can’t imagine Game of Thrones being as amazing as a movie, no matter how big the budget, and Shadowhunters is much better as a TV show than it was a film.

A Movie or TV-Show You Preferred to its Book?

The Princess Bride

Don’t get me wrong the book is amazing, and a favourite of mine as well, but it was so confusing to start that it took me ages to get into it and to get through those first few chapters. I did not have that problem with the film at all.

the-princess-bride

Series or Standalones?

While I do enjoy standalones, because there is no wait to find out how the book ends, I prefer series. Fantasy is my favourite genre and those stories normally work better as series than standalones, simply because there’s more room for development. There aren’t many fantasy standalones out there but most of the ones I’ve read have been a disappointment.

  1. Ahah ebooks can be so convenient, but definitely don’t hold a candle to physical books! Hardcovers I feel do look a bit more aesthetically pleasing?? And I love that they can last so long in good condition. But they’re also more expensive?? STRUGGLES. I loveee shopping in store for books and that’s how I usually buy my books? But there’s also the thrill of finding a book package on your porch one day haha (because they never seem to come on the day I expect them? Which gets me stressed but also a lovely surprise when I get them haha.) THE BONE SEASON. I solemnly swear I will read it one day! 😂 It sounds like something I’d totally enjoy and I can’t wait to read it. Loved reading your answers for this tag! 💞

    1. No they really don’t, but I can carry my Kindle to and from work and not worry about it getting damaged in my bag like I do with physical books. If only books in general could be cheaper, I do love hardcovers for that reason but Jesus the cost can be extreme sometimes can’t it?
I think I may have a couple of book packages arriving tomorrow. I’m very excited to see if that is the case because I love the surprise of finding they’ve arrived for me! 😀
Definitely definitely read it one day. It’s such an amazing series so I feel like I should be on a mission to recommend it to as many people as I can.
Thanks so much Analee, I’m glad to hear that! 😀 ❤

      1. Yes, exactly! It’s easier because you don’t have to worry about keeping it in good condition ahah. Not to mention taking physical books while travelling can be a hassle sometimes.
Oh yes, same here. I do understand there are a lot of costs behind a book, hardcover especially, but the cost can be too much to handle sometimes for poor little bookworms haha.
Yayyy that’s so great! It’s always a lovely surprise to see them arrived.
Ahah noted and definitely prioritized! ❤

      2. I would worry if I was carrying paperbacks in my bag, because I know what else I carry in my bag and I would end up damaging a book in some way. Yep, what happens if you finish one halfway through your journey, you’ll have nothing else to read all day.
I guess it’s worth it to have the books on our shelves and all but yeah sometimes it can be too expensive can’t it? 🙂

      3. Oh yes, paperbacks and their fragility! I’ve had to deal with most books from school in paperback, and have had… not so great experiences with them. o.O Now I’m forever terrified haha. Yes, exactly! That would be a shame.
Totally worth it! (though I don’t believe my wallet would agree haha.) Very expensive, for sure!

      4. Ohh, sounds like there are a few stories there. I’ve never damaged a paperback book too badly but there have been a few creases and rips here and there. Just not worth the risk anymore when I can read on my Kindle.
My wallet definitely doesn’t agree but I do! 😀 ❤

      5. Haha yeah… There was one when the book was in my bag and it was raining while I had to walk to the bus stop, and the rain went through my bag and got the book wet. Not like soaked, or anything, but aghhhh I was horrified because it was in such good condition before. *cries* Needless to say, I am super protective of my own paperbacks now haha and definitely not worth the risk when there are ebooks!

  2. I LOVE THE BONE SEASON!!!!!! And I know what you mean, I feel like this series doesn’t get as much love as other series which is a shame. Samantha Shannon has built a brilliant world, plus Warden 😍😍😍😍 Awesome answers!

  3. I love my eBook library but it’s frustrating to see a number instead of lines of book spines on the wall. Hardbacks tend to hurt me, haha! They fall on me when I read on my back and it’s never a good thing, so I prefer paperback. I can also cram more of them in my bag! I totally agree about the borrowing part. There’s so much pain when you loved the book too much and have to give it back!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah eBooks are great but they still can’t compare to physical books in a physical library you know? Ohh I’ve never been injured by a book, that I can remember, but that sounds painful.
Whenever I’ve borrowed a book that I’ve loved and had to return I’ve immediately gone out and brought my own copy to keep, then I don;t have to give that copy back later! 😀

  4. THE BONE SEASON! I had to start my comment with that because YAY for recommending it. We talk about it so much that you know that is a series I want everyone to read too. I think it’s my bookworm lives goal to get everyone to at least give the series a try. 🙈 On another note, I can’t wait until I get around to reading When the Moon Was Ours. That one is high up on my list for this year after having not picked it up last year. And I while I wouldn’t say I’m preferential to heroes or villains (though I really love anti-heroes) I do love a great villain redemption arc. Warner from Shatter Me! He went from being a character I couldn’t stand to being one of my all-time favorites for that series. I’m also with you on fictional worlds and loving series more. If only it was possible to travel into a book. Great answers for this, Beth! I loved reading them. 😁♥

    1. Ha, yeah either that or Shades of Magic seems to be the books I recommend the most. I feel I really need more because whenever I have to answer those questions in tags I only have two possible answers to choose from! They are great books though and yeah definitely a bookworms goal right there. 🙂
Oh I can’t wait for you to get around to that book either then Melissa, it’s a wonderful magical realism read and I hope it’ll be one you really enjoy as well.
If a villain is written well and given a good redemption arc I can sometimes (most times) enjoy their journey more than the heroes one. I just can’t resist those kinds of characters! ❤
Yeah if that was a real thing I would have over my life savings to have the opportunity to travel into my favourite books.
Thanks so much Melissa! 😀 ❤

      1. I think I go between recommending Six of Crows, ACOTAR, TBS, and now have been adding ADSOM in there. But you can never have too many great books to recommend so I’m with you on needing more. 😂
I hope so too. With everything I’ve heard I have a feeling that I will!
It depends for me. I’ve had a few characters like that but haven’t had it happen a lot. I think I end up getting wrapped up in all of the characters and enjoying the whole books journey more often than not.
Same! I would be like “See ya!” to everyone and then dive into my favorite books. It’ll be hard to choose which one to travel to first though.
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😁♥

      2. I tend to switch between the Shades of Magic series or TBS, occasionally I’ll switch it up and recommend both at the same time. 🙂 Oh I agree there can never be too many amazing book recommendations out there for people to find.
I tend to be the opposite, as soon as a villain makes the gestures to start to redeem themselves they immediately become my favourite characters. I really can’t resist the underdog in these occasions! 😀
I have a few options for which world I’d go to first, but I guess eventually you’ll get around to the majority of them, and you could always go back to a few here and there couldn’t you? 😀 ❤

  5. I have heard many great things about The Bone Season, a lot of people seem to love that series. And I haven’t read it yet, though I do hope to that some time in the future! Though I think I’ll be waiting until more of the books come out, as I love reading a series in one go. (And I do have a lot series to catch up to, so no starting new ones for me.)
Thank you for tagging me Beth! 🙂 ❤

    1. Oh it’s an amazing series, and one I’d highly recommend which I guess is obvious from my answer to that question on this tag! 😀 I think with this series wait as long as you can for as many of the books to come out as possible, that way you won’t have to deal with long waits like I’m struggling with at the moment. I’m not a patient person and it gets worse the more I love a series!
That’s all right, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one Anna! 😀 ❤

  6. Well, your answers does convey huge similarities to my preferences as well! I do however have some great love for used books though. Not only because of the price, but the fact that I’m giving a book that was given away, another chance at life! 😀 ++ I do often find myself with some used books in pretty good condition! I wonder sometimes if I’ll ever, in the future, swap all my used/paperback copies for new and hardcover copies. I know for a fact that THAT would make a pretty sexy library. 😀 Great tag, Beth!

    1. Ha, well that’s good to hear, and I get what you mean about used books as well because that’s a really good way of looking at it. I’ve found some used books in good condition, and gave away some books in good condition, so they are out there I guess I’m just peculiar about that one point. 🙂
That would make a pretty sexy library. I have a mix of old and new books, paperback and hardcover and I’m pretty happy with how my bookshelves look at the moment.
      Thanks so much Lashaan. 😀

  7. Lovely answers! 🙂 E-books are soo practical and easy to carry around, but they don’t replace the beauty of hardcovers… So I’m always struggling whenever I get an ebook, read it and then love it, because I want it as an hardcover just as well, hahahaha.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much Marie. Definitely practical, and I don’t have to worry about it getting damaged in my bag either which is nice because I worry about the hardcovers/paperbacks I have in there sometimes.
I normally do that, if I enjoy a Kindle edition enough I’ll get the book in paperback/hardcover. If it’s a series I seriously love I’ll buy it in all the editions I can find! 😀

    1. That’s all right, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one. Yeah I think if I found a book that I was interested in, and it was in a good condition, I’d likely buy it as well. There just aren’t that many decent used book stores near where I live.

    1. Definitely a fun one, and if you want to take part then go for it! If you send me a link with your answers I’ll be sure to check it out! 😀
Good to hear about the genres, and yeah I get what you mean about paperbacks being easier to carry, but I worry less about damaging hardcovers in my bag when I take them into work. 🙂

    1. I do think if I found a used book in good condition I’d buy it, but there aren’t many (in fact I don’t think there are any!) used book stores near where I live so I don’t get an opportunity to look through and see what I can find there. 🙂 ❤

  8. Beth! We seem to have so much in common *be still my ❤️* 😂 every time I see The Bone Season I make a silent promise to myself that this will be the year I start that series as well Falling Kingdoms 😉 When The Moon Was Ours was BEAUTIFUL & lyrical, I really do think Magical Realism still intimidates many a bookworm. I am 💯% ready for Wild Beauty 🙌🏼 and I know you are too 😆 I seriously have in my bucket list “visit Waterstones” & it’s going to happen my friend 😉 I also prefer to build my personal library & new books for the same reasons you gave. I also mostly read on my ereader app to & from work but nothing beats Hardcover 🙌🏼 great answers Beth! 😃💕

    1. Ha, that’s definitely good to hear Lilly! 😀 ❤ Oh you definitely need to start The Bone Season series, along with the Shades of Magic book it's a series I'm going to start recommending to everyone because it's a favourite of mine. 🙂 Yes so so excited for Wild Beauty, I'm sure that's going to be a beyond amazing book. 😀
If you ever come and visit a Waterstones store make sure it's the one in Piccadilly Circus, that is the best it has five/six floors full of books and if I could I'd live there!
Nothing beats building a personal library, and nothing beats hardcover I agree.
Thanks so much Lilly! 😀 ❤

  9. Ooh, thanks for the tag! I already did this one in my very early blogging days (don’t go looking for it though; it’s probably awful). 😂

I see TV show adaptation and get excited because I immediately thought of 13 Reasons Why, my newest obsession. ❤ And I have way too many books to choose from an underrated pile. Could never pick just one. 😬

    1. Oh don’t worry I won’t go exploring, I feel the same way about my early blogging posts (and I’m sure most people on here do for the same reason!)
I have 13 Reasons Why on my to-watch list, along with Riverdale, and it’s one I hope to get around to soon, along with Riverdale! 😀
There are plenty of books out there that deserve more attention, When the Moon Was Ours is just one of my all-time faves! 😀 ❤
