Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List.

There are so many books currently on my TBR list and all of them are books I’d like to get around to soon-ish, especially when you consider how long some of them have been on there. I’m normally not good at sticking to TBR lists given how I’m a mood reader, but this week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme I featured the books I definitely want to get around to ASAP, only time will tell whether I do or not.

Top Ten Tuesday #60

Wing Jones by Katherine Webber

I saw Katherine speak about her book at the Dark Societies event she did with Stephanie Garber. Wing Jones sounded amazing, and I’m definitely excited to get started on this one soon.

Jandy Nelson meets Friday Night Lights: a sweeping story about love and family from an exceptional new voice in YA. With a grandmother from China and another from Ghana, fifteen-year-old Wing Jones is often caught between worlds. But when tragedy strikes, Wing discovers a talent for running she never knew she had. Wing’s speed could bring her family everything it needs. It could also stop Wing getting the one thing she wants.

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

This was the February Fairy Loot book, so I have a gorgeous hardcover edition currently sitting on my bookshelves. I figured that was more than enough of a reason to add it to my TBR list.

Crown princess Rhiannon Ta’an Wants vengeance.

The only surviving heir to an ancient Kalusian dynasty, Rhee has spent her life training to destroy the people who killed her family. Now, on the eve of her coronation, the time has finally come for Rhee to claim her throne—and her revenge.

Alyosha is a Wraetan who has risen above his war refugee origins to find fame as the dashing star of a DroneVision show. Despite his popularity, Aly struggles with anti-Wraetan prejudices and the pressure of being perfect in the public eye.

Their paths collide with one brutal act of violence: Rhee is attacked, barely escaping with her life. Aly is blamed for her presumed murder.

The princess and her accused killer are forced to go into hiding—even as a war between planets is waged in Rhee’s name. But soon, Rhee and Aly discover that the assassination attempt is just one part of a sinister plot. Bound together by an evil that only they can stop, the two fugitives must join forces to save the galaxy.

In this exhilarating debut for fans of Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles and Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy, Rhoda Belleza crafts a powerful saga of vengeance, warfare, and the true meaning of legacy.

The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles

I picked this book up one day on a whim solely because of the cover. I haven’t heard anything about it or seen any reviews yet but the blurb is more than interesting enough to catch my attention.

For the perfect love, what would you be willing to lose?

It’s been a shattering year for seventeen-year-old Zoe, who’s still reeling from her father’s shockingly sudden death in a caving accident and her neighbours’ mysterious disappearance from their own home. Then on a terrifying sub-zero, blizzardy night in Montana, she and her brother are brutally attacked in a cabin in the woods—only to be rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter they call X.

X is no ordinary bounty hunter. He is from a hell called the Lowlands, sent to claim the soul of Zoe’s evil attacker and others like him. X is forbidden from revealing himself to anyone other than his prey, but he casts aside the Lowlands’ rules for Zoe. As they learn more about their colliding worlds, they begin to question the past, their fate, and their future.

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

It seems like everyone has read and loved this book, honestly it’s been more hyped up in my mind than Labyrinth Lost was. Hopefully when I get around to The Bone Witch I’ll love it just as much as everyone else seems to have.

The beast raged; it punctured the air with its spite. But the girl was fiercer.

Tea is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy makes her a bone witch, who are feared and ostracized in the kingdom. For theirs is a powerful, elemental magic that can reach beyond the boundaries of the living—and of the human.

Great power comes at a price, forcing Tea to leave her homeland to train under the guidance of an older, wiser bone witch. There, Tea puts all of her energy into becoming an asha, learning to control her elemental magic and those beasts who will submit by no other force. And Tea must be strong—stronger than she even believes possible. Because war is brewing in the eight kingdoms, war that will threaten the sovereignty of her homeland…and threaten the very survival of those she loves.

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

A Beauty and the Beast retelling by one half of the author duo who wrote my favourite sci-fi series? There was no doubt this was going to be a book I picked up the very second it was released.

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

I have been desperate for this book ever since it was announced, and the fact that the release date was pushed back by a few months only made me more desperate. Laini Taylor is one of my all-time favourite authors so my expectations for Strange the Dreamer are sky high.

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

Is anyone surprised to see this book on my list this week? With A Conjuring of Light and The Song Rising having already been released A Court of Wings and Ruin is now my most anticipated release of the year.

Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin’s manoeuvrings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit—and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.

Release by Patrick Ness

Patrick Ness’s books are always at the top of my to-buy and to-read lists. I haven’t actually heard too much about Release, I was honestly surprised it was being released in May, but I do know I’ll likely love it as much as all his other books.

Inspired by Mrs Dalloway and Judy Blume’s Forever, Release is one day in the life of Adam Thorn, 17. It’s a big day. Things go wrong. It’s intense, and all the while, weirdness approaches…

Adam Thorn is having what will turn out to be the most unsettling, difficult day of his life, with relationships fracturing, a harrowing incident at work, and a showdown between this gay teen and his preacher father that changes everything. It’s a day of confrontation, running, sex, love, heartbreak, and maybe, just maybe, hope. He won’t come out of it unchanged. And all the while, lurking at the edges of the story, something extraordinary and unsettling is on a collision course.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

I’ve never been a fan of love triangles, but there are always exceptions to every rule and The Love Interest feels like it may be that exception for me. Ever since I read the blurb this has been a highly anticipated release, and the reviews it already has are full of praise.

There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?

Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be—whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.

What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

Another retelling but this time for Mulan, which I’ve never seen retold in a YA book before. I loved Renee Ahdieh’s first duology so I am so excited for Flame in the Mist to be released, I’m sure it will be just as amazing.

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor’s favourite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family’s standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she’s quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she’s ever known.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the books on your Spring TBR list are.

  1. Awesome picks!! And yesss to Patrick Ness! I was really surprised to hear about it (recently) when its release is set so close to today! I’m not sure what it’s about, but I find it odd that I don’t hear much hype around it. :O Maybe it’s a hidden gem. I’m also very curious about Flame in the Mist. A retelling of Mulan sounds insanely awesome. I too have never seen any book do it before, and I wonder if Renee Ahdieh will do justice to the original tale in this retelling! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan. I know, it kind of seems like this book has come out of nowhere because no one seems to have heard of it before recently. I wonder where it’s been hiding.
I am so excited for Flame in the Mist, I’ve never read a Mulan reselling before I don’t think. Well I can say for sure myself but from what I’ve seen people seem to love this book so I’m guessing it does do the original tale justice! 😀

  2. I know you already know this, but I am SO EXCITED FOR THE LOVE INTEREST. I swear I’m gonna drop everything once that’s released 😂 I also really want to read The Bone Witch and Empress of a Thousand Skies! I’m currently reading Strange the Dreamer and Laini Taylor is such an amazing writing. It’s A LOT to take in though regarding the world-building so I’ve been reading it really slowly, haha.

    1. Yep I’m definitely aware of that. I’m definitely so excited for it myself as well. It’s at the top of my to-read list for when it’s released too! 😀
They both sound amazing. And oh that’s wonderful Lauren. I really hope you enjoy Strange the Dreamer, but yeah I can imagine it’s got some pretty detailed and epic world-building! 🙂

  3. Wait!? Why wasn’t I aware of the new Patrick Ness book? I have no idea how I missed that! Definitely adding it to my TBR. May is also my birthday month, so this book being released then makes it even more exiting! 😀
I’m also exited about Strange the Dreamer, buuut I don’t know whether to read it first or The Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Perhaps I should wait until all the books are released and then read it, as I do love reading series back to back. I really have no idea what to do…we shall see what will happen. 🙂
The Love Interest does sound interesting. I dislike love trilogies as well, but this one does intrigue me. I think I’m going to wait until it’s released and I see more reviews of it, before deciding if I’m going to read it.
    Great post Beth! 🙂

    1. I wasn’t aware of it until recently either, but I’ve moved it to the top of my to-read list because it’s Patrick Ness, it’s going to be amazing! 😀
Ohh, happy birthday for May then. 🙂
I feel like Strange the Dreamer is going to be amazing, my expectations for that one are sky high. I’d recommend the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series because at least all the books are released from that one. Once Strange the Dreamer is released you’ll still have to wait for the second in that duology. 🙂
The Love Interest doesn’t sound like a classic love triangle so I think this book may be an exception to the rules.
      Thanks Anna! 😀

  4. LOVE THIS LIST SO MUCH!! 😍 I pretty much have all of these on my TBR?? I had no idea about the Patrick Ness book though omg I’m so pumped for that now!! I’ve heard mixed things about Empress of a Thousand Skies and The Edge of Everything, but I’m in love with the covers and definitely hope to read them. The Flame in the Mist seems AMAZING and is definitely one of my most anticipated along with Strange the Dreamer (!!!!) and A Court of Wings and Ruin (!!!). Can’t wait for Hunter as well, you already know of my obsession with Beauty and the Beast haha. 😍😉 And with so many books with love triangles it’s hard to find books that actually do them well… I hope The Love Interest is one of them because it sounds really good!! Again, amazing list Beth. ❤😊

    1. Thanks so much Analee. And yeah I think these are all highly anticipated releases but I can easily see why so many people are looking forwards to them based on how amazing they sound. I wasn’t aware there was anything by Patrick Ness in the works but oh I am so glad the release date for Release isn’t too far away.
I’ve heard mixed things about Empress of a Thousand Skies but not actually The Edge of Everything. Still looking forwards to reading them myself as well.
Oh I am well aware of that obsession, it’s one I share actually so I can’t wait to get around to Hunted.
Normally I’m not a fan of love triangles but I do think The Love Interest is going to be the exception to that rule. It sounds amazing!
      Thanks again Analee. 😀 ❤

  5. ACOWAR! I am beyond excited about the release of that book. I can’t believe it’s so close! It feels like just yesterday ACOMAF released and I was reading them for the first time. I wonder if it feels like it’s gone by so fast because of the fact that I’ve reread ACOMAF a lot of times 😂. Anyway! Aside from that one I’m extremely excited about Strange The Dreamer and The Love Interest as well. I feel like The Love Interest is definitely going to be a unique take on the whole love triangle trope. Several of the others are on my TBR too but I’m not sure if they’re ones I’ll actually get around to reading this year. So many books to read and all of that lol. Great list, Beth! 😊

    1. Oh same here, not A Conjuring of Light and The Song Rising have been released it is literally my most anticipated release of the year, and I can’t believe it’s almost here as well.
Probably has, I need to re-read ACOMAF myself before the release of ACOWAR. I’m going to make that a priority.
Strange the Dreamer and The Love Interest just sound brilliant, and I agree with you about the latter being a unique take on the trope as well.
Well whenever you do get around to them I hope you enjoy them.
Thanks so much Melissa! 😀 ❤

      1. You should so check out SJM’s Instagram if you haven’t because she posted a short ACOWAR excerpt today. I need it to be May 2nd! So close yet so far away lol. Have fun with your ACOMAF reread whenever you get to it! Though I’m sure you will. 😁
I hope so too and you’re welcome!! 💕

      2. Ohh I definitely will have to in that case, then again for the most part I’m not always keen on teasers and prefer to just wait for the book to be released and read it all in one go you know?
It’ll be a book I pick up closer to the release date of ACOWAR, so maybe the end of April or something! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

  6. Oh, Beth. I have a similar list but damn, I should have done this week’s TTT.

I’m currently reading Hunted and it’s a very different take on Beauty and the Beast, despite having a similar storyline.

Also, can we have ACOWAR already? I feel like I’ve been waiting since forever.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Well you can probably still post a list of books from your Spring TBR list, it’s certainly not too late for that! 🙂
Ohh, are you enjoying it so far then? I need to buy a copy and then I’ll have to get started on it straight away.
Same here, but I’m sure it will have been well worth the wait in the end! 😀

      Liked by 1 person

    1. Well a lot of these are fairly recent releases. There’s actually not a book on this that wasn’t, or isn’t being, released this year so maybe you just haven’t gotten the chance to discover them yet.
Yeah it does sound interesting doesn’t it? 🙂

      Like

    1. I’ve seen it around loads actually and I’ve been intrigued enough to add it to my to-read list. Ohh that’s interesting, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you as well in that case! 🙂
Thanks for the link. I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 😀

  7. I’m excited for most of these as well! But especially Strange the Dreamer and ACOWAR 🙂 and Hunted!! I love the cover and I can’t wait to have it on my shelf 🙂

  8. Hunted is also on my TBR! I’m first in queue at the library, and I’m super excited to get my hands on it. AND YES YES THE LOVE INTEREST. I’m in queue for that as well, and it’s definitely my most anticipated release of the year.

As for The Bone Witch, I’m conflicted on whether or not to read it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Other books I’m looking forward to reading in the upcoming months include Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands, Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, and The Thief by Stephanie Landsem.

    1. Ohh, in that case I hope you manage to get it from your library soon. It sounds like a brilliant book and I love fairytale retellings so it’s kind of a winning combination for me.
Loads of people, seem to be so excited for The Love Interest, I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on that book ASAP! 🙂
In that case I’ll be sure to let you know what I think, I’ll be posting my review on my blog either way.
Well they sound like interesting releases as well so I hope you really end up enjoying them Ellie, seems like a lot of amazing books are being released in the next few months. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, and wow that’s amazing to hear about Strange the Dreamer. The closer we get to its release date the more excited I am to finally get my hands on it.
Hunted sounds wonderful, and I’m sure you’ll love the ACOTAR series as well. At least you won’t have too long to wait for the last book in the trilogy! 😀

      1. That’s how I was feeling and then I was soo lucky to get approved for an eGalley of it. I kinda freaked out a little 😂😂

And that is true! I will probably wait for it to come out and buy it before I start the series so that way I can just read all 3 in order straight away. 👌🏻

        Liked by 1 person

  10. Great picks! I want to read all of these, as well. I have The Bone Witch on NetGalley and I meant to read it before it was published, but I couldn’t get to it. I will very soon, though!

  11. I’m looking forward to The Bone Witch as well! I hadn’t meant to pick it up initially but I’ve read a couple of reviews complimenting its magic system, and I loooove magic systems so I’d pick up any book with good ones no matter what, haha. I hope you enjoy it, Beth!

Also super intrigued to read The Love Interest. I think it was one of your posts that made me aware of that book and it just sounds like a fun dystopian to tuck into. 🙂

And Flame in the Mist and Empress of a Thousand Skies! We’re definitely spoiled for choices. ❤

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I wasn’t too sure about it at first either, but after seeing everyone talk about it and seeing all the amazing reviews I just figured I had to give it a chance. I really hope you enjoy it as well Reg, and I’m already a little intrigued by the magic systems in this one.
Nice to hear, and yeah plenty of people seem excited for The Love Interest, I certainly can’t wait to get my hands on it.
So many choices so little time to read them all right? It seems like there are so many amazing books being released in the next few months! 🙂 ❤

      1. Yeah, I’m really into unique magic systems and this one seems like it has it. Can’t wait for your thoughts. 💕

Haha, exactly! If only I could pause time and just read everything first… but alas, the world stops for no one. 😂

  12. I’m reading Empress of a Thousand Skies right now (I also got it in my Fairyloot!) and it’s really really good! I’d definitely recommend picking it up soon, it’s also a pretty fast read so it shouldn’t take too much of your time! 💜

  13. Ugh, I forgot how lucky you are because Release isn’t releasing (lol bad pun) until September or October over here in the U.S.! I hope you enjoy it when it comes out because it sounds amazing. ACOWAR, Hunted, The Bone Witch, Strange the Dreamer, and The Love Interest are all on my TBR as well! I’m waiting to see if I should add Flame in the Mist on my TBR! I didn’t like her Wrath and the Dawn duology, but the cover is so pretty, so I might cave. XD

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh really. I’m honestly a little surprised by that; not only because it’s a massive gap between the two release dates but I’m used to the US getting things before we do over here in the UK. Not that I’m complaining in this case but I’m sure it will be worth the way when you do get it in the US. 🙂
They all sound like amazing books don’t they. I want to try and get around to Hunted soon given it was released yesterday, and the rest are highly anticipated releases of mine as well actually.
Well I’d highly recommend Flame in the Mist, despite not having read it myself, but I did enjoy her Wrath and the Dawn duology so I may be a little biased on this part. 🙂

  14. My God I’m excited to read all of these. I’ll be adding Wing Jones, Hunted, and Release to my TBR. Haven’t heard of them until now but they sound really interesting. The other ones are already in my cart LOL! Beautiful list, Beth! Hope you enjoy every single one of them! 🙂
