The Reader Confession Tag

I’d like to say I don’t have too many confessions to make in terms of my reading habits. My worst habit is the amount of books (and bookshelves) I end up buying. Then again looking back there have been a few (more than a few actually) bad habits I’ve had which I can dredge up again so I have something to talk about in this tag.

the-reader-confession-tag

I was tagged by both Heather at The Sassy Book Geek and Anna at My Bookish Dream. Thanks so much to both of you for the tag, I had a lot of fun with this one and I hope you enjoyed reading my answers as much.

Have you ever damaged a book?

No recently no. I’m very carefully with my books to the point where I will have a second copy on my Kindle to read instead of risking damaging my paperbacks. However ages ago, whenever I brought a new book to start reading, I would crack the spine. Also there are a few books that I’ve read so many times they’re falling apart now; maybe it’s time to buy new copies.

Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

Yes. I borrowed a book from my dad once and as I was turning one of the pages, and I’m still not sure how this happened, I actually ended up ripping one of the pages right down the middle. Luckily my dad wasn’t mad about it but I still felt so guilty.

Another time, and this one isn’t something I did but it makes for a funny story, my mum borrowed a book from someone she works with and while we were eating dinner she left it in the living room with our dog. All of a sudden we heard a ripping sound and it turns out our dog had grabbed the book from the sofa where my mum had left it and was trying to rip it apart. My mum brought a new copy for her friend but we now own a copy of The Girl on the Train with half the cover missing.

How long does it take you to read a book?

Honestly it varies but I’d say the average is about two days. If a book is around 350 pages I can normally read it in a day, any longer than that and it takes about two days.

Books that you haven’t finished?

I don’t normally DNF books, in fact there is only one book that I can think of recently that I picked up and haven’t finished yet.

Prodigy by Marie Lu

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and I also really enjoyed what I’ve read of the second book. However when I started reading Prodigy I was in the middle of a massive slump and never managed to get further than halfway through. The whole series is on my re-read list so one day I’ll get back around to this one.

Hyped/ Popular books you didn’t like?

Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard

When I first read Red Queen I really enjoyed it. However going back and re-reading the first book in preparation for starting Glass Sword I found I did not enjoy it at all. I wasn’t a fan of Glass Sword and can’t say I’m excited for King’s Cage either.

Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

No, not really. I don’t tend to talk about books much with people outside of the WordPress community, because I know most people don’t read the same books I do or have the same love of reading I do. However if anyone ever asks me what I’m reading, which they do a lot because everyone knows how much I read, I always tell them.

How many books do you own?

A lot. I’m not sure on the exact number but I have five bookcases in my room and all of them are full of books, and that’s not counting the ones I have in the attic which I don’t read anymore.

Are you a fast reader or a slow reader?

I’m a fast reader. Like I mentioned in one of the earlier questions I can read on average a book every two days so I get through a lot each week.

Do you like to buddy read?

I’ve never actually taken part in a buddy read. It sounds like a lot of fun but I guess I’d need to find someone who can read as quickly as I can.

Do you read better in your head or out loud?

Given that I can’t really read out loud on the train on my way to work I read in my head more than anything else. However when I’m writing blog posts and reading them back to check for spelling and grammar mistakes I can concentrate better if I read out loud.

If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

If this question had said series instead of book I would have picked Harry Potter, no doubt about it, but because I couldn’t pick my favourite Harry Potter book above all the others I went with my favourite standalone. The Night Circus is always going to be a favourite of mine. It’s a book I re-read all the time and a book I am desperate to eventually have a sequel to, though I doubt that will ever happen.

  1. LOL, this is a fantastic read. I would have so much crap to confess to. It’s always a horrible feeling to damage a book, especially a borrowed one! But I’ll admit that I’ve failed on both fronts haha. So glad you’ve managed to avoid that for the most part recently. And gotta love them puppers haha. That poor Girl on the Train copy lol. I hope one day you pick up Prodigy again and enjoy it much more the second time around! I’m an extremely fast reader (read ACOMAF w/i a day) so if you ever want to do a buddy read, I’d be more than happy to do it with you! ❤ And then thousand times yes to The Night Circus. Such a FANTASTIC book 😀 Awesome post, Beth!

    1. Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yeah I guess when it comes down to it I didn’t have too much to confess. I fear that feeling so I’m always extra careful with the books I borrow.
Our dog is just out of control sometimes, I don’t think he likes books or magazines being in what he thinks of as his space so he’ll tear anything he can get his paws on.
I hope so too, I loved what I’ve read so far so I guess I just need to get started on it when I’m not in the middle of a massive reading slump!
Oh that would be amazing, and well if you have any upcoming books you think I’d enjoy let me know and we can buddy read them. 🙂
It’s just amazing isn’t it? I finished re-reading it the other day and oh I forgot how much I loved the story! 😀
      Thanks Azia! 🙂 ❤

      1. I’m usually EXTRA careful but there ARE some cases where I just mess up really badly LOL. And that paupers sounds adorable, but also a handful haha.
And I’ll definitely let you know which books we might enjoy buddy reading!
        Such an amazing story!
        No worries! ❤

  2. I’m glad that you had fun doing this tag! 😀
Wow. You seriously read fast!! I need at least 2 to 3 days to read a 350 pages book. Normally that is, now I’m in a slump sooo I’m reading little to nothing. But hopefully that will change soon, I really want to read again. (Which is always good!)
Buddy reads are seriously amazing! It’s super fun getting to discuss a book with a friend while reading it. I hope you find someone you can read with, I can only recommend buddy reads! 😀
Great post Beth, I really enjoyed reading your answers!!

    1. Yeah it was great to take part in this one so thanks again for the tag Anna. 🙂
I have a lot of time to read thanks to my three hour per day commute to and from work. Ohh, that sucks Anna, I really hope you manage to come out of your slump soon then!
Well I’ve had fun discussing books with friends after reading them so I guess discussing books while reading them would be even better!
Thanks so much Anna! 😀 ❤

  3. Oh my, when The Night Circus is at the top of the top, alongside Harry Potter, you know there’s something magical about it! Looking forward to find out for myself hahaha I also like that you have a ripped copy of The Girl on the Train! It has so many mixed reviews. Wouldn’t be so bad that it’s damaged if you were to dislike it! Do you plan on ever reading it? 😀 😀

    1. Definitely, and I was tempted to put Harry Potter but I couldn’t pick just one book from that series, The Night Circus was literally the next best. I really really hope you love it when you get around to it Lashaan.
Probably one day. We already have a copy in our house, a ripped one nonetheless, so I don’t really have any excuse for avoiding it. 🙂

  4. Totally agree with Red Queen, it just didn’t live up to the hype! Also, The Night Circus is such a great joy, it’s definitely one of my all time favourites 💕

    1. Yeah I know a few people on WordPress who agree with our thoughts on that book. I think there are just so many more people out there who love the series.
The Night Circus is amazing, just there aren’t enough words to fully describe how much I enjoy that book! 😀

  5. I have a story similar to your dog one except it wasn’t a borrowed book but one of my mom’s books 😂. We were gone one afternoon and somehow my puppy escaped her kennel and found her way onto the couch where she proceeded to decide my mom’s book was her chew toy. We came home to a floor full of little blue pieces of half the cover and the book laying there with loads of teeth marks in it 🤦. Anyway! You read so fast, Beth! Sometimes I can finish contemporaries in two to three days but more often than not it takes me a little under a week to finish and book. Especially with fantasies, I read those so slowly for some reason. And you know I am completely with you on Red Queen. I enjoyed the first book a lot and then the second let me down big time. I’m kind of dreading reading the third. I’m thinking of waiting until the last one is out.
Thanks so much for the tag!! I enjoyed reading your answers for this. 💕😊

    1. Oh my god that must have been worse if your puppy destroyed the whole book. We managed to catch our dog before he could do more than tear the cover in a couple of places! He’s managed to completely demolish a lot of magazines and newspapers though. 😀
Ha, yeah I guess I’ve always been a fast reader pretty much, and I have a lot of time to actually read books given my long commute which always helps. 🙂
Yeah I still have the third book on my to-read list, and I’ve seen some good reviews for it, but at the moment there are just more books on my to-read list that I am that much more excited to actually read. I was thinking of waiting for the last one to come out as well. May be the best way to go for both of us.
That’s all right Melissa, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one! 😀 ❤

      1. Luckily she didn’t manage to destroy the whole book, just the majority of the cover and then she left a lot of teeth marks. She has managed to destroy my school papers a few times though. She takes the whole cliche my dog ate my homework job to heart. 😂
True! A long commute can definitely help. I think I got more reading done back when I when I wasn’t working from home. There was a time when I could read a book in a day but now I read so slow. Especially when I’m reading fantasy.
I’ve only seen one review for it so far (the review with the spoiler) and it was a positive one too. But yeah, there are books on my TBR that I’m more excited to read too. I need to finish my current read already so that I can start ADSOM. 🙈

      2. That is lucky. I think if my dog ever got into my room he’d have a field day what with all the books I have in there! 😀
Oh wow, did the teachers believe you when you told them that? I’m sure some people will have tried it without having a dog!
It’s the same for me. I do all my reading during the week on my way to or at work and none at the weekend when I’m home. I guess it’s just easier for me that way I dunno.
To bad it was a spoiler review right? But yes you need to start ADSOM soon, and let me know what you think as soon as you’re finished. I need to know what you think of that book! 😀

      3. Funny enough she’s always in my room and hasn’t pulled a book off of my shelves yet. Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it. 😂
Luckily it was school papers I had printed out so I just reprinted them.
I would do it too if I wasn’t at home a lot during the week.
Yes! The dreaded spoiler review without a warning.
        Will do! 😁

      4. Here’s hoping. My dog isn’t allowed upstairs and thank god because my books would be destroyed I can guarantee it.
        Oh and that’s good!
I always put warnings, even if there aren’t any spoilers but I just think there are, I don’t want to risk ruining anything for anyone else.

  6. Omg the dog 😂😂 Poor book. It didn’t stand a chance.
And nice on your reading pace aha, a book in two days or a book in one is really great, I’m jealous. I’d say I’m a relatively fast reader as well, problem is finding the time to read! It would be fun to try a buddy read sometime though haha. ❤
And I enjoyed Red Queen quite a bit when I first read it! Glass Sword, a lot less, and I haven’t picked up any of the books of the series since. Though I probably will read the third book at some point, it’s not a priority. And The Night Circus is so good! I love it 😍

    1. Yeah he can be a bit of a pain at times but we love him so we forgive him. And better one of my mum’s friend’s books than one of mine! 😀
I have a lot of time to read because I have a long commute to work each day which really does help. For me fast reading is only one half of the advantage you know? Yeah definitely fun. 🙂
It seems to have been that way for a few people. They enjoyed Red Queen but not Glass Sword as much. I’ll still be picking up the next book in the series, but it’s not high on my to-read list either.
Definitely an amazing book. I’m planning to re-read it this month and I can’t wait! 😀 ❤

  7. You are SUCH a fast reader, Beth, it’s so great you can get through SO many books in just one week! At least, you can get through all of the books you want ahah, this is such an awesome feeling 🙂 thank you so much for the tag! ❤

  8. I really didn’t like the Red Queen series. I tried really, really hard to get into it and it just wouldn’t happen! I would probably go with Night Circus as well, it’s so magical! Great answers 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah it was the same with me, the second time reading it I just couldn’t see what I liked about it the first time. It seemed to drag in every way possible.
Oh The Night Circus is an all-time favourite book of mine so it was an obvious choice for that question.
      Thanks! 😀

    1. Oh yes he destroys anything he can get his paws on. Most times it’s the newspaper or magazines my parents leave lying around. First and only time he got his teeth in a book!
It’s definitely come in handy being able to read quickly, and having the time I have to read on the train each morning. 😀
