The Reader Confession Tag

I’d like to say I don’t have too many confessions to make in terms of my reading habits. My worst habit is the amount of books (and bookshelves) I end up buying. Then again looking back there have been a few (more than a few actually) bad habits I’ve had which I can dredge up again so I have something to talk about in this tag.

I was tagged by both Heather at The Sassy Book Geek and Anna at My Bookish Dream. Thanks so much to both of you for the tag, I had a lot of fun with this one and I hope you enjoyed reading my answers as much.

Have you ever damaged a book?

No recently no. I’m very carefully with my books to the point where I will have a second copy on my Kindle to read instead of risking damaging my paperbacks. However ages ago, whenever I brought a new book to start reading, I would crack the spine. Also there are a few books that I’ve read so many times they’re falling apart now; maybe it’s time to buy new copies.

Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

Yes. I borrowed a book from my dad once and as I was turning one of the pages, and I’m still not sure how this happened, I actually ended up ripping one of the pages right down the middle. Luckily my dad wasn’t mad about it but I still felt so guilty.

Another time, and this one isn’t something I did but it makes for a funny story, my mum borrowed a book from someone she works with and while we were eating dinner she left it in the living room with our dog. All of a sudden we heard a ripping sound and it turns out our dog had grabbed the book from the sofa where my mum had left it and was trying to rip it apart. My mum brought a new copy for her friend but we now own a copy of The Girl on the Train with half the cover missing.

How long does it take you to read a book?

Honestly it varies but I’d say the average is about two days. If a book is around 350 pages I can normally read it in a day, any longer than that and it takes about two days.

Books that you haven’t finished?

I don’t normally DNF books, in fact there is only one book that I can think of recently that I picked up and haven’t finished yet.

Prodigy by Marie Lu

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and I also really enjoyed what I’ve read of the second book. However when I started reading Prodigy I was in the middle of a massive slump and never managed to get further than halfway through. The whole series is on my re-read list so one day I’ll get back around to this one.

Hyped/ Popular books you didn’t like?

Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard

When I first read Red Queen I really enjoyed it. However going back and re-reading the first book in preparation for starting Glass Sword I found I did not enjoy it at all. I wasn’t a fan of Glass Sword and can’t say I’m excited for King’s Cage either.

Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

No, not really. I don’t tend to talk about books much with people outside of the WordPress community, because I know most people don’t read the same books I do or have the same love of reading I do. However if anyone ever asks me what I’m reading, which they do a lot because everyone knows how much I read, I always tell them.

How many books do you own?

A lot. I’m not sure on the exact number but I have five bookcases in my room and all of them are full of books, and that’s not counting the ones I have in the attic which I don’t read anymore.

Are you a fast reader or a slow reader?

I’m a fast reader. Like I mentioned in one of the earlier questions I can read on average a book every two days so I get through a lot each week.

Do you like to buddy read?

I’ve never actually taken part in a buddy read. It sounds like a lot of fun but I guess I’d need to find someone who can read as quickly as I can.

Do you read better in your head or out loud?

Given that I can’t really read out loud on the train on my way to work I read in my head more than anything else. However when I’m writing blog posts and reading them back to check for spelling and grammar mistakes I can concentrate better if I read out loud.

If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

If this question had said series instead of book I would have picked Harry Potter, no doubt about it, but because I couldn’t pick my favourite Harry Potter book above all the others I went with my favourite standalone. The Night Circus is always going to be a favourite of mine. It’s a book I re-read all the time and a book I am desperate to eventually have a sequel to, though I doubt that will ever happen.
