February Recap

February is such a short month that it always feels like it’s barely started before it’s over again, but maybe that’s just me. The first two weeks of this month were a bit hit and miss when it came to my blogging schedule, but now I’m back on track, and while I didn’t manage to get as many books read as I would have liked we’ll blame that on the fact that this month is shorter than the others rather than my poor planning.

Still I feel like this was a productive month for me; I published my first discussion post, with others to come, and even received my first physical ARC from a publisher which was very exciting. All in all my 2017 is off to a great start so here’s hoping it continues that way.

Books I Reviewed

february-recap-17-1

RoseBlood by A.G. Howard

This book was not as good as I expected it to be. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I’d read the original Phantom of the Opera story but as is I was just left disappointed by RoseBlood.

The Sin-Eater’s Daughter Series

The Sin-Eater’s Daughter  was a re-read for me, one I enjoyed just as much the second time around, in preparation for starting The Sleeping Prince which, if anything, was even better than the first.

The Sin-Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

The Sleeping Prince by Melinda Salisbury

By Your Side by Kasie West

While By Your Side isn’t my favourite Kasie West book it was still an amazing read. Fluffy and light it was the perfect book to spend an afternoon with, which is what I’ve come to expect from her.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

This book deals with some very real and heartbreaking issues, it was incredibly written and nothing important was brushed under the rug or forgotten about. Adam Silvera is just an incredible author.

The Girl at Midnight Series

The Girl at Midnight was another re-read for me so I could start the second book and know what was going on. Again this was a series I enjoyed just as much the second time as I did the first.

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey

The Shadow Hour by Melissa Grey

ARC Review: The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon

This had to be one of my most anticipated books of the year so of course I was bound to love it. The Song Rising is a brilliant addition to my favourite series, the only issue I have is the (unbearable) wait for the fourth book.

I received a copy of this book from Bloomsbury.

book-haul

Despite all appearances to the contrary this isn’t actually a lot of books for me this month, and I didn’t even spend too much on them. I managed to get the whole of The Young Elites series for £6, and four books were in a buy one get one half price deal at Waterstones which saved me a fair bit of money. In terms of managing my book buying better this year I’m not off to a bad start.

next-month-on-my-blog

So far I have yet to get through all the books in one of my monthly TBR lists, but I have a good feeling about next months. Wires and Nerve, The Scarecrow Queen and A Conjuring of Light are all highly anticipated releases of mine that I can’t believe I haven’t gotten around to sooner, and The Night Circus is an all-time favourite so I should be able to fit them all in next month.

february-recap-17-4

Wires and Nerve by Marissa Meyer

In her first graphic novel, #1 New York Times and USA Today bestseller Marissa Meyer follows Iko, the beloved android from the Lunar Chronicles, on a dangerous and romantic new adventure—with a little help from Cinder and the Lunar team.

In her first graphic novel, bestselling author Marissa Meyer extends the world of the Lunar Chronicles with a brand-new, action-packed story about Iko, the android with a heart of (mechanized) gold. When rogue packs of wolf-hybrid soldiers threaten the tenuous peace alliance between Earth and Luna, Iko takes it upon herself to hunt down the soldiers’ leader. She is soon working with a handsome royal guard who forces her to question everything she knows about love, loyalty, and her own humanity. With appearances by Cinder and the rest of the Rampion crew, this is a must-have for fans of the bestselling series.

The Scarecrow Queen by Melinda Salisbury

The final battle is coming…

As the Sleeping Prince tightens his hold on Lormere and Tregellan, the net closes in on the ragged band of rebels trying desperately to defeat him. Twylla and Errin are separated, isolated, and running out of time. The final battle is coming, and Aurek will stop at nothing to keep the throne forever…

Explosive, rich and darkly addictive, this is the stunning conclusion to Mel Salisbury’s internationally best-selling trilogy that began with The Sin Eater’s Daughter.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

The battle between four magical Londons comes to a head in this stunning finale to the New York Times bestselling Shades of Magic trilogy by rising star V. E. Schwab

London’s fall and kingdoms rise while darkness sweeps the Maresh Empire—and the fraught balance of magic blossoms into dangerous territory while heroes and foes struggle alike. The direct sequel to A Gathering of Shadows, and the final book in the Shades of Magic epic fantasy series, A Conjuring of Light sees Schwab reach a thrilling culmination concerning the fate of beloved protagonists—and old enemies.

March is going to be a month of reveals for me on Reading Every Night. I will be changing the design of my blog now I have an idea of what I want it to look like, and I will be launching my Goodreads profile now that my reviews on this blog are in some kind of order.

Basically February was my month for planning, March is my month for unveiling.

  1. Looks like you had a wonderfully successful month! It seems you managed to read some really amazing books (with the exception to a couple, of course) and your book hauls are so impressive. So happy you got The Young Elites. I think it’s a brilliant series. Can’t wait to see your opinion on them! 😀 Also so happy you plan on re-reading The Night Circus! Such a lovely book. And Wires and Nerve sounds AMAZING. I’ll definitely have to add that one to my TBR. Hope you enjoy all the books on your TBR!

    1. Yeah I like to think so, especially considering February is a small month as is. And despite the couple of exceptions still a month I’m happy with overall.
I’ll try and start The Young Elites soon but I do want to read the Legend trilogy first. I guess owning those books may give me the motivation to get started.
The Night Circus was as wonderful this time around as it was the first time, and yes I can’t wait to get started on Wires and Nerve too.
      Thanks Azia! 😀

  2. I’m always so jealous of your reading and reviewing months, Beth! Haha! They’re always SO good! Brilliant haul too. I really need to read The Young Elites!! I read More Happy Than Not at the start of the year and I’m STILL not okay. It broke my heart in the best way. I’m suuuuper excited for your Goodreads and to see all your other unveilings this month, ahhhh!!!

    1. Well I definitely managed to get through some great books this month, and I have a lot of time to read too so I can get through a lot as is.
Oh I’m definitely not OK with More Happy Than Not still, that book completely broke my heart and I’m still not over what happened. Still it was an amazing book wasn’t it?
I’ve started putting the redesign together, Goodreads will be a work in progress but I’m hoping to unveil everything at the end of this month. Kinda soon now I think about it! 🙂

  3. Ohhhhw great recap, Beth! I like the sound of March. Feels like I’m waiting for the curtains to be drawn and a magical performance to be executed! Looking forward to your reviews in March and for the new design! Must be super exciting! 😀 😀

  4. I’ve heard a ton of people say that Howard’s latest book was a disappointment; I didn’t particularly enjoy Splintered, but I know how much it sucks when books you’ve been waiting to read turn out to be a disappointment! I can’t wait to get to THE SONG RISING. I’ve been hearing wonderful things, honestly, and I can’t wait to get back into the world.

Such a great haul and wrap-up, Beth. ♡

    1. Yeah I wouldn’t say this was one I was waiting for like I maybe was others, but I loved her Splintered series so I guess I did have high-ish hopes for RoseBlood. If you disliked Splintered Aimal I would not recommend picking up RoseBlood.
Oh The Song Rising is amazing, I am still not over how amazing that book was and that will definitely be one you love as well!
      Thanks. 😀 ❤

  5. Aha still disappointed about the mixed feelings on RoseBlood, still haven’t picked that one up yet! I do want to, though. I’m SO excited for you to read A Conjuring of Light omgggg I’m sure you’ll love it. I’ve been wanting to read By Your Side, but so many people have been disappointed, I’m sad but I’m glad to hear it was still a cute read. Lovely recap, hope March is just as great, if not better. ❤

    1. Yeah there are a lot of mixed reviews for this book, and I wish I’d read some of them before picking it up so maybe I wouldn’t have been so disappointed in it.
I actually finished A Conjuring of Light a couple of days ago and will be posting my review later tonight as well. Basically it was amazing, all I have to say about this one at the moment! 😀
I think By Your Side was a cute read, I just hoped more was made of the whole locked in a library part than actually was you know?
Thanks Analee, I hope you have an amazing month as well! 😀 ❤

      1. Aw, it’s a shame that the locked in a library plot wasn’t used to its full potential. So many people have been disappointed in that aspect, which is sad because it’s what I (and 80% of the other people haha) were looking forward to for that book.
        Thank you! 😊

      2. It’s what I was looking forwards to as well. I’ve never read a contemporary book where the characters were locked in a library and there was so much potential in By Your Side to make the most of the setting. Unfortunately the characters literally could have been locked in anywhere, the library part makes no difference whatsoever to the story.
        That’s all right! 😀 ❤

  6. Congratulations on receiving your first physical ARC! I squealed when I received my first one 😊 I hope you love The Night Circus, it’s magical and one of my all time favourite books 💕

  7. I’m completely with you on February! It’s like I blink and the whole month is over. Despite everything though it looks like you had a great reading and blogging month, Beth! I was so happy for you when you got approved for an ARC of TSR. I was cheering! I’ve yet to be approved for a physical ARC myself but I can imagine how exciting that had to be. 😁
I can’t wait to see your new blog design. I know so many bloggers who have been tinkering with theirs lately that it’s making me have the urge to mess with mine. I don’t think I’ll the time to anytime soon though lol. And you know I’m excited for your GR. I hope that March is a fantastic month for you! 💕😊

    1. For some reason even though it’s only two days shorter than some of the other months it feels even shorter doesn’t it?
Yeah still I think this was a great month overall. As soon as I found out I was getting a proof copy I knew I had to let you know. I pretty much cheered out loud as well when I saw the email.
I think after a year it’s time for a change when it comes to my blog design. I have an idea so now it’s just creating everything to have it in place for the big reveal.
Thanks Melissa, I hope March is just as amazing for you as well! 😀 ❤

      1. Definitely! And then on leap years it always feels weird to have the extra day. I think Feb throws everyone off. 😂
When you did I was like “YES! We can talk about it together sooner!” 🙈 Are you going to go for an ARC for TBS4 once they’re available? I’m on the fence about it. One one had I do want to but on the other I struggled with my review and know I’ll most likely want to do a spoiler review for my next. I might just do what others do and put spoilers but make them invisible unless highlighted.
Well I can’t wait to see it!
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😁💕

      2. February is just one of those really weird months, no other way to describe it. Leap years always throw me off, even more than just February does.
It has been great being able to talk about it sooner. It still strikes me a little weird that we’ve already talked a lot about it and it still hadn’t been officially released yet! I’m going to see if I can, I know who to email so you never know.
If you put spoilers in people will read them and notice them. I think I included a few spoilers in my review for ACOL so I’ll be putting a warning at the beginning of that review as well. I just couldn’t fully talk about it without slipping a few spoilers in I think. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Me too! I even still feel like I’m eagerly waiting for the release. I think mainly because my mom hasn’t read it yet and I know once she does she’ll be talking about it with me too. 🙈
If I do end up doing spoiler I will definitely be putting a warning and also using the highlight method. I don’t think I’ll be able to talk about TBS4 at all without spoiling something. 😂

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Ahh so you’ll have someone else to talk to about it then? That’ll be nice. Other than you I don’t know anyone else who reads this series, and I want to talk about it with everyone!
I don’t think I’ll be able to either. It’ll be one of those books I just want to talk about everything, even the spoiler-y parts. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yep! Mostly it’s fun to watch my mom react to things that happens in books. I know she’s going to freak. 😂
Other than you and my mom I don’t know anyone else either. Here’s to hoping more TBS fans surface on the blogosphere after TSR! 😁
Same. And then I can only imagine the wait for TBS5. We think the wait for TBS4 is torture already but I have a feeling the next one will be worse. 🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      6. No matter the book it’s always fun seeing people react to the books you recommend and love isn’t it?
I hope so, I know there are a lot more people out there who love the series, just don’t seem to see much of them on WordPress for some reason. It seems like the wait for every book will be pure torture. 🙂

  8. I think I might be a bit too excited about all of these news. new design, goodreads profile, YAY! I am SO eager to see everything this month, Beth!
I bought Wires and Nerves too, and I am so excited to read it – it looks soooo pretty already, I couldn’t stop staring at it ahah. I hope it’s as great as it seems to be 🙂

    1. A lot happening this month, I need to get it all in place so it won’t be unveiled until the end of the month but when it is it will be everything at once; new design and Goodreads in one hit! 😀
It looks amazing, I’m surprised I haven’t got started on it this very second but there were just a couple of other books I needed to get through first! 😀 I hope you really enjoy it Marie, it definitely looks amazing. 🙂

  9. Oooo I can’t wait to see what you unveil! 🙂 Looks like you had a good February! I can say that I’ve started to become a somewhat book buyer this past month, I bought 3 books (which sounds like nothing, but is actually a lot for me haha) 😛 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yep, I’m in the midst of putting it together and so far I love it compared to my old design.
I’m counting February as a success as well. Ahh, see it starts off with three books and before you know it you’ve brought three books a day! It’s a slippery slope. 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Oh no haha! Maybe instead of the traditional way of putting them on a book shelf, put them lying down? Maybe that will give you more room? Or you might end up with less space, I’m not really sure I haven’t actually tried it, just thought I’d suggest it!

  10. Congrats on the first discussion post, it was a success! And on receiving a physical ARC! It is rare enough for me to make a happy dance every time hahahaha! February felt so long to me!
So our blogs are both getting makeovers in March! I can’t wait to see yours!! Great monthly recap of a busy month!

    1. Thanks so much Donna. I was kind of nervous posting it I’ll admit but yeah luckily it turned out to be a success.
The physical ARC made a so-so day turn out great when I got home and saw it waiting for me. 😀
Ohh, I’ll be interested to see what you come up with for your re-design in that case as well Donna! 🙂

  11. Yay for your first physical ARC! I was super excited for mine as well and still remember the feeling. And even better if you like the book as well. ❤

Also can't wait to see your new blog design and Goodreads profile – I've thought of changing my design too but just haven't had the time yet. Hopefully sometime this month (it's March where I am) or in April.

Have a wonderful March, Beth. 🙂

    1. Yeah it was definitely one of the highlights of my blogging career so far, seeing that parcel on my doorstep made for a brilliant day, and the book was amazing too which is an added bonus I guess.
The new blog design has been something I’ve been playing around with a bit recently, I have an idea for how I want it to look so now it’s just putting all the pieces together. I’d definitely be interested in seeing what you come up with for your blog Reg.
Thanks, I hope you have a great March as well! 😀 ❤

  14. Looks like you had a rather succesful reading month! I still haven’t read a single Adam Silvera book even though I had History Is All You Left Me on my January releases and planned on reading it then too. Never happened.

Congrats on your first physical ARC! You must have been so excited!

Oh, I can’t wait to see what new design you have been working on! 😀

    1. Yeah it was a good month overall. Adam Silvera is an amazing author, and I’ sure when you get around to one of his releases, whichever one you pick up first, you’ll love it!
Thanks, yeah it was definitely an amazing feeling when it arrived.
My re-design is still in the works, but it will definitely be up before this month is over, very excited to unveil it at the moment. 🙂
