Standalone Sunday is a weekly feature created by Megan at Bookslayer Reads which aims to showcase standalone books which you loved or would recommend.
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows
Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…
Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…
Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.
The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?
Back when I was still subscribed to Owl Crate one month the book I received was My Lady Jane, and around that time I started seeing reviews for it everywhere. It seemed like, at one point or another, every blog I followed on WordPress had posted a review for My Lady Jane, and all of them were amazing reviews. It sounded like a brilliant book so of course I bumped it up my to-read list and I couldn’t wait to get started on it myself. Luckily the reviews were spot on and this ended up being a book I really loved as well; a tongue-in-cheek retelling of Jane Grey’s story, which a very different ending, My Lady Jane was a brilliant and hilarious read.
“No horse jokes,” he said.
“My lord, I apologize for the horse joke. If you put down the book – unharmed! – I will give you a carrot.”
He brandished the book at her. “Was that a horse joke?”
“Neigh.”
“Was that a horse joke?”
You can check out my review for My Lady Jane here.
What did you think of My Lady Jane? Have you read it yet or is it still on your to-read list? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you took part in this week’s Standalone Sunday as well.
I’ve been dying to get this one! I really need to bump it up on my TBR. In fact, I’m moving it into my Amazon cart so I always know it’s there LOL. Thanks for the reminder, Beth! 😀

In that case I hope you manage to get it soon. I know all to well about keeping books in the Amazon cart, I have about eight in there at the moment just waiting to be brought.
That’s all right Azia! 😀

I actually met the authors at YallWest, but I didn’t even know who they were or that this book was a thing. They seemed like a really awesome trio though! 😀

Oh wow that must have been amazing. I think sometimes even if you’re not familiar with an authors work it can still be a wonderful experience getting to meet them. 🙂

Whenever I see the cover, I forget this is a funny read. There’s something so serious about the title!

Yeah I remember when I first saw it on Goodreads (before it was released and before I started seeing all the reviews) I didn’t think it would be a comedy retelling of Jane Grey’s story.

Well you’ve got it on your to-read list so I guess that’s the first step in getting around to reading it! 😀
It’s definitely a fun book, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did but the reviews are more than right when they talk about how amazing this one is. 🙂

I read this book awhile ago, and it totally blew me away. I didn’t really know much about it going in but it was super funny!! I’ve heard that these authors are gonna come together again to write a spin off-sequel of sorts to this and I’m so excited for that!!

It definitely blew me away as well. I know going in it was going to be hilarious, it was something mentioned in all the reviews I read, but it still surprised me.
Ohh, I didn’t know that, but now I do I’m am super excited for more from these authors! 😀

It’s a surprising book isn’t it? Before starting My Lady Jane I wasn’t sure I’d love it as much as I actually did! 🙂

I remembering seeing this one around the blogosphere a lot a while back too. Enough so that I actually ended up buying it when it was on sale through Kindle. I still haven’t actually read it though. I think I might have added it on my list for this year. Either way, if the quote you included is any indication then I really need to read it because it cracked me up. 😂 Great pick, Beth!! 💕😊

It was literally everywhere when this book was first released, and it was seeing it everywhere that convinced me I needed to get started on it ASAP.
And I guess owning the book is the first step to reading it, so you’re halfway there! 😀
It’s such a great book, and hilarious as well so I hope you love it.
Thanks Melissa! 😀 ❤

It was! I read so many reviews for it. But, yes, owning the book is the first step. And I have a feeling I’ll need plenty of quick, funny reads this year to put in the mixture with all of the fantasy and series enders I’ll be reading.
I hope I do too and you’re welcome, Beth!! 😊♥

I haven’t seen as any reviews for it recently so I guess the hype died down a little. I think after TSR you could do with a quick funny read and this book definitely applies. I went straight from TSR into A Conjuring of Light so I’m still kind of high into the fantasy genre at the moment. 😀

I could definitely do with a quick funny read right now because of TSR. But I’m feeling the pressure of review books. Honestly, I just want to dive straight into ADSOM at the moment. I was really excited about my review books but I’ve since heard a lot of mixed things about both of them so now I’m worried I won’t enjoy them.

Actually for some strange reason reading TSR and then A Conjuring of Light immediately after hasn’t put me in a fantasy slump. If anything it’s done the opposite and I’m now reaching for any fantasy book I can get my hands on.
ADSOM will be worth it by the time you do get around to it but I guess review books have to come first. What ones have you got on your list?

It’s the same for me! I think that’s why I was dreading going from TSR into a slower contemporary. I would have much rather went straight into another fantasy. Which I did in a way since I reread ACOMAF (again lol) straight after I finished my TMO reread instead of starting my review books. 🙈
Sadly, yes. I have to read The Inexplicable Logic of My Life and Blood Rose Rebellion. I’m over half way through Logic right now and it’s not so bad despite it’s flaws. 😊

Sometimes you just need a fantasy fix don’t you. That’s how I felt after TSR and luckily there were more than enough books on my to-read list that allowed me to do that.
Re-reading ACOMAF is never going to be a bad choice is it? 😀
Well it’s good you’re enjoying Logic so far, hopefully it will be the same with Blood Rose Rebellion! 🙂

Yes, sometimes you really do just need a fantasy fix. Especially after a book like TSR.
Nope 😂. At this rate I won’t even have to reread it again before ACOWAR because I’ve reread it so much that I remember eveything.
Logic actually took a turn for the worst and I have so many mixed feelings. I have around 60 pages left.

I seem to be in a fantasy binge read at the moment. Since finished TSR I’ve not even been tempted by another genre.
I reckon you’ll still re-read ACOMAF though won’t you? 😀
Oh that sucks. Do you think you’ll manage to finish it or will it be a DNF one for you?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah, I’ll most likely reread ACOMAF leading up to ACOWAR just because I love it so much. 😂
Nah, I pushed myself to finish it because despite the stuff I didn’t like there was also stuff I did like. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it.

I’ll have to do the same actually, most likely because I won’t remember much of ACOMAF by the time ACOWAR is released.
Hmm, mixed feelings are a shame if this was a book you were excited for. I’ll be looking out for your review either way Melissa. 🙂

The more I see this book, the more I want to read it! XD I definitely need to get my hands on it some time soon, I’m seriously in the mood for a funny book. Now I’m hoping that my bookshop has it, otherwise I would have to order it online. Great pick for this week Beth! 🙂

It’s a great book so I’d highly recommend it Anna, and if you’re in the mood for a funny book then this is a perfect pick. It made me laugh so much while reading it on the train (I’m sure I got some funny looks).
Well either way hopefully you get your hands on a copy so you can start it soon. Thanks Anna! 😀 ❤

This is one that I originally wasn’t going to read, but then decided to add it to my TBR because of all the glowing reviews. I’m not sure when I’ll get to it, but I’m really glad to see you enjoyed it and hopefully I will too!

In that case I hope you enjoy it Lauren, and that all the glowing reviews haven’t led you wrong. It’s a great book, I wasn’t sure it would be my kind of thing either but I picked it up because of the reviews and ended up loving it! 😀
