The Valentine’s Day Book Tag

So even though Valentine’s Day is over now I thought there was still just enough time for me to post this tag. It’s jumped a little ahead in my queue simply because if I tried to get through all the others first I’d end up getting around to this one June/July time, better a few days late than a few months right?

the-valentines-day-book-tag

I’ll admit I’m not a massive fan of Valentine’s Day, for me it was pretty much just another Tuesday, but I hope everyone else had a wonderful day with your respective partners and if you’re single like me then I hope you had a brilliant day in general. I was tagged by Heather at The Sassy Book Geek. Thanks so much for the tag Heather, I had a lot of fun with this one and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much.

Standalone Book You Love

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus is such an iconic book for me and I am constantly searching for a book that can come close to the recreating the sense of wonder and enchantment I felt while reading it. As of yet no book has managed so I simply have to content myself with reading this one over and over again. I’m still holding out hope for a sequel one day but I’m sure how likely that is, after all it’s got to be hard to try and follow this one.

Dystopian Book You Love

Penryn and the End of Days series by Susan Ee

Back before I first picked up this series I remember thinking the dystopian genre was becoming a little stale. Angelfall ended up saving it for me, and even today it remains one of my favourite dystopian series, despite the last book being a little disappointing. There’s plenty to love about this series and it’s one I plan on re-reading very soon.

A Book that You Love but No One Else Talks About

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore

Anna-Marie McLemore’s second book seems to be many people’s favourite, and it has certainly gotten a lot of positive reviews since its release, but I’ve hardly seen any for her first book. Another magical realism story that blurs the line between reality and magic The Weight of Feathers isn’t as good as When the Moon Was Ours but it’s still an amazing read I’d highly recommend.

Favourite Book Couple

Honestly there are so many. I published a Top Ten Tuesday post a couple of days ago featuring some of my favourite YA couples, but if I had to choose one (actually it’s four, sorry I just can’t narrow it down any further than that) it would have to be;

Wylan and Jesper from the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo

Gauri and Vikram from A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

Etta and Nicholas from the Passenger duology by Alexandra Bracken

And of course Lila and Kell from the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab

Shades of Magic

Book that Other People Love but You Haven’t Read Yet

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

The only reason I even own a copy this book is because of the hype in the run up to its release, and since its release every review I’ve seen has been full of praise for Lady Midnight. Unfortunately before I can pick it up myself and see what all the fuss is about I need to read the other nine (more if you count the novella collections and add-ons) books set in the Shadowhunters world.

Lady Midnight

A Book with Red on the Cover

Half Bad by Sally Green

It took me longer than I care to admit to realise the pattern on the front of this cover actually forms the silhouette of a face, I thought it was just a random pattern at first. Half Bad was a book I picked up without knowing much about, and while the start was a little confusing it didn’t take me long to get into the story, and now this is a favourite series of mine.

A Book with Pink on the Cover

Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton

I suppose this one is more of a mixture of pink and purple, but nonetheless it’s a gorgeous cover. I loved the first book in this series so I was incredibly excited to get started on Traitor to the Throne when I received an eARC from NetGalley. While I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did Rebel of the Sands it was still a great story and I’m looking forwards to the release of the third book now.

You were Given a Box of Chocolates what Fictional Boyfriend/ or Girlfriend Would Have Given them to You.

Literally the first character that popped into my mind for this question, and the character I’m going to go with because once she entered my mind she just wouldn’t leave, is Nina from the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.

I loved Nina in the Six of Crows duology, she was definitely one of my favourite characters. She loved food and while it was mainly waffles she spoke about I feel she’d definitely know the value of a box of chocolates and pick the very best ones she can find, and then eat them herself.

You are Single on Valentine’s Day. What Book Would You Read? What TV Show Would You Watch? What Movie Would You Watch?

Well I was single this Valentine’s Day so that part didn’t take much imagination, and to answer this question I’m actually going to pick the book I started reading on February 14th, as well as the movie and TV show I watched that day as well.

You are in the Book Store. All of a Sudden You get Shot with an Arrow by Cupid. What New Release will You Love?

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

It’s not out until March so I’m not sure this can be classed as a new release, it’s more of an upcoming one, but even without reading Strange the Dreamer I know I’m going to love it. Laini Taylor is an amazing author, her Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is an all-time favourite of mine, plus the cover is so gorgeous it’s worth having for that reason alone.

Strange the Dreamer

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

I’m not going to tag anyone in this as Valentine’s Day is well and truly over for another year. However if anyone else wants to complete this tag then go for it, just send me a link to your post in the comments so I can see what your answers are.

  1. Ahhh so many amazing books! I love The Night Circus and The Weight of Feathers, though you’re so right, the latter totally does not get talked about enough. ❤ And eee Wylan and Jesper!! Love love love them so much, and of course, Kell and Lila as well. (So ready for A Conjuring of Light omg)

    1. The Night Circus is my ultimate favourite, and yeah I wish more people were aware of The Weight of Feathers because that’s an amazing book as well. Kell and Lila are probably my ultimate OTP, and Wylan and Jesper were definitely my favourite from the Six of Crows duology, I just loved every scene they had together! 😀 ❤

  2. Great answers, Beth! Kell and Lila are of course amazing, and I’m also really looking forward to Strange the Dreamer. I still haven’t read The Weight of Feathers and The Night Circus myself, but I’ve been wanting to and I’ve really only heard good things about both of them. ❤

More Happy Than Not would probably make me cry. 😅

    1. Thanks so much Reg. Kell and Lila are one of my ultimate OTP’s now, I can’t wait to see how their story ends (I really need it to be a happy ending!) Strange the Dreamer sounds amazing doesn’t it? Plus the book itself looks beyond gorgeous.
I’d definitely recommend both The Weight of Feathers and The Night Circus, they’re favourites of mine. Also More Happy Than Not nearly made me cry so I reckon it will make you cry too! 🙂

  3. I really want to read The Weight of Feathers, and all of the other books from this author, I am intrigued by ALof them ahah. And how are you enjoying More Happy Than Not? Do you have tissues ready? It’s an intense read ahah 🙂

    1. I’d highly recommend any of Anna-Marie McLemore’s books Marie, they’re both amazing and deserve a lot more recognition. 🙂
More Happy Than Not was an amazing book, but yeah I do wish I’d had some tissues with me. Intense is a good way to describe it actually. 🙂

  4. Thanks for doing the tag Beth, I definitely had fun reading through all of your answers!
I definitely need to get to The Night Circus here soon and I have no excuse now that I finally have a copy! It’s kind of a bummer to hear there aren’t any books similar to it since I’m sure I’ll love it and be wanting more as well. I hear books get compared to The Night Circus ALL the time such as The Weight of Feathers (which I see on here too, did you find it comparable at all?).
I also have a lot of these on my TBR still like Angelfall, The Weight of Feathers, Half Bad, Passenger, The Star-Touched Queen, Rebel of the Sands, More Happy Than Not, and Crooked Kingdom! There’s just a ton.
Lila and Kell are also one of my favorite couples as well although I still need to get to AGOS!
I AM SO PUMPED FOR STRANGE THE DREAMER! I hope I haven’t hyped it up in my head too much now though because my expectations for it are through the roof! 🙂

    1. That’s all right, thanks so much for tagging me in this one, and I’m glad you enjoyed reading my answers as well. 🙂
Oh The Night Circus is amazing, I need to do a re-read of it soon because it’s one of my all-time favourites. I really hope you enjoy it when you get around to it. I didn’t actually see any comparison to The Night Circus before reading The Weight of Feathers which I guess is a good thing because I don’t think the two books are that similar at all. There’s nothing so far that’s come close except maybe Caraval, but even still there’s nothing I’ve pick up to date that I can say comes close to comparing.
That is a lot on your to-read list but hopefully you’ll be able to get around to them soon. They’re all amazing books so I’m sure you’ll love them. 🙂 Also not long until ACOL so I guess you need to get to AGOS soon in that case! 😀
It’s the same with my expectations for Strange the Dreamer, but I do reckon if anything Laini Taylor will be able to live up to them. 🙂 ❤

      1. Thanks Beth! I heard The Weight of Feathers being compared to the Night Circus so I thought I’d ask! It sounds good as well so when I read it I’ll just go in with that in mind!
Glad to hear Caraval is at least somewhat comparable since I do really want to read that one as well! 😁

      2. That’s all right, I’ve never heard that comparison and I’m kind of glad I hadn’t because I think I would have been disappointed if I had before reading The Weight of Feathers. It’s still a great book don’t get me wrong but it’s not similar to The Night Circus in my mind.
Caraval is amazing, I’m sure you’ll love it! 😀

  5. I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day either, I just don’t care about it. I did, however, go out on that day with my best friend. We went to see a horror movie, which was a lot of fun! 😀
I really can’t get over how beautiful Strange the Dreamer is! It does sound amazing and all that, but the whole design of the book is simply stunning. Hopefully the story within will be amazing as well. (I really haven’t read any reviews for it or anything, so I have no idea.)
And I have to agree with giving Nina all the chocolate. She does seem to have a sweet tooth and I do love her, so I would definitely pick her for that question as well. 🙂

    1. Yeah it’s a holiday I could take or leave, and actually Halloween is the same for me. I think just because they’re two holidays that don’t really apply to me you know? Oh that must have been fun. For me it was just a normal Tuesday!
Strange the Dreamer sounds amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The cover is definitely gorgeous and I reckon the story itself will be just as amazing. I haven’t actually seem any reviews either but I haven’t really been looking for them.
Nina is just amazing, and yeah she’d appreciate the chocolates as well wouldn’t she! 🙂

  6. Great answers! I also have one of Cassandra Clare’s book from the main series (the third one, I believe) and the only reason I picked it up (I got it for free) is because of the hype and praise it was receiving + the latest book (the one you put in this post) was about to come out as well). Don’t know if I’ll ever get around to reading the series and even finding a copy of the first two books too, but I’ll definitely try it out if I do get my hands on a copy. Also like the fact that you re-re-re-re-re-rewatched The Mummy, and for VALENTINE’S DAY hahahah Never a bad time to watch your favourite movie, right? 😛

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan. I do also have all her previous books, it’s just there are so many I can’t bring myself to start them yet you know? It’s great you managed to get one for free, maybe once you find the first two books you’ll fancy picking up the series. There is a lot of hype surrounding the series so who knows what we’ll both think when we start reading it.
I’ve re-watched The Mummy so many times actually, it’s kind of always on in the background but you’re right there’s never a bad time to watch your favourite movie! 😀

  7. I so need to read The Night Circus and The Weight of Feathers! I swear there are just too many books that I want to read all at once. If only I had the concentration for it 😂. You’re not alone in not realizing the pattern on Half Bad was a face. I remember looking at that cover so many times in the past at the bookstore and not realizing until you pointed it out to me lol. Also, Wylan and Jesper!! They’re definitely one of my favorites too 😍. And I could so see Nina buying chocolates and then just eating them herself 😂. Have you been enjoying Shadowhunters? I haven’t really been keeping up with it because they sort of went a bit too much out of the book’s plot for my liking. I’m waiting until the season is over to binge but I pretty much know what’s going on because my sister tells me everything every week. Great answers for this, Beth!! 😁

    1. Oh yes you definitely definitely do Melissa. Both The Night Circus and The Weight of Feathers are two favourites of mine so they come highly recommended! I have the same problem, just this week there are a lot of books I need to read and I don’t think I’ll have the time but I’ll certainly do my best.
I actually think I was talking to you in the comments when I realised about Half Bad, before then it just didn’t seem to connect in my mind. Wylan and Jesper are amazing, and yes I could totally see Nina doing that but I wouldn’t blame her if they were really nice chocolates or something! 😀
I have been enjoying it actually. There are a lot of differences to the books but it really works in the show and I can’t wait for the next episode now, not too long to go. I do that with a few series actually, wait for a few episodes to be out so I can binge watch. Shadowhunters has had enough episodes of this season released that now I’m week by week watching again.
Thanks so much Melissa! 😀 ❤

      1. I definitely plan on getting to them at some point this year! Ah, the problems of bookworms. It’s the same for me. I actually have two books I have to finish before the 7th and I’m thinking I’ll only end up finishing one of them and the other review will be a little late. I wasn’t expecting to get approved for the other book. 🙈
Right? If I was her and I had nice chocolates I think I would do them same. I couldn’t resist them lol.
Yeah, most of the differences do seem the work for the show. And my sister is loving what they’re doing. I’m just the picky one this time around 😂. I’ve also been caught in a few other shows. I started this one called Riverdale and I’m addicted. I also started Eyewitness!
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😁

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Too many bookworm problems right? I think in the end as long as you get around to reviewing both books it shouldn’t matter too much that one of them was a little late. At least you’re still reading both and eventually reviewing both right?
I’d definitely do the same. I have no willpower when it comes to fancy chocolates.
Maybe when/if you do pick up the series again try and take it as different to the books, like it’s a different world completely you know? I think it takes something different for books to succeed than TV shows you know? I’ve been seeing trailers for Riverdale and really want to start that soon, also I loved Eyewitness! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yes! I need a shirt that says ‘bookworm problems never end’ or something like that. Maybe something a bit more clever. 😂
Yep, I’m still reading and reviewing both. Plus, I think I have until April on one of them since I was approved so close to the release date. 😊
Yeah, I actually completely agree. I don’t know why it’s bothering me so much with Shadowhunters now when it didn’t at first. Usually I don’t mind the differences. But yeah, whenever I do start watching it again I’m going to take the ‘forget the books exist’ approach. 😂
You so should! It’s a really good show and I’ve only seen episode one of Eyewitness so far but I really enjoyed it.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Bookworm problems ever end does kind of hit the nail on the head though. I think it kind of works actually.
Oh that’s good, I have two ARCs to get through still but there’s a little time left before they’re released so I’ve got the time to read and review both (one I’ve already read it’s just the writing of the review that seems to be stumping me at the moment)
I find I do that, the stories and the characters are so different from what I remember it’s kind of easy to watch the show and forget the books exist.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the rest of Eyewitness, and I’ll add Riverdale to my to-watch list as well then! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      5. I so should get a t-shirt made that says it. 😂
Good luck with your ARCs, it’s always good when there’s still plenty of time to get them read. And I know the feeling of being stumped while writing a review. It actually took me days to write my Gilded Cage review. Sometimes it really is hard to get all your thoughts in order for a review.
I hope so! Let me know what you think of Riverdale whenever you do watch it. 😁

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Please do, that would be amazing I think! 😀
Thanks, I feel like at some point I’ll need that luck. I’m trying to catch up on my blogging this week which is going well at the moment I must say! 😀
Oh that sucks, but hopefully the next review you have to write will go quicker. Being stumped writing always sucks doesn’t it?
        Will do! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      7. I’ll have to look into it lol.
Glad your blog catch up is going well. That’s going to be me for the rest of the weekend because I let myself get behind to read TSR and write my review. 🙈
I actually finished the one I just wrote in less than a day so I would say that’s a big improvement. It really does suck. Especially when you have the words but can’t get them out.

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Yes, definitely do! 😀
It’s going better than I thought it would, and catching up will give me more time to do other catch up things later next month.
That is an improvement but I know what you mean. Normally when I feel like that I start writing anyway and eventually the words come to me! 🙂

    1. It’s a brilliant series isn’t it? I think it’s a subtle design until you notice it for the first time and then it’s obvious isn’t it? I think the US copies do have the same design actually, at least from the look at the editions on Goodreads they do! 😀

    1. I finished More Happy Than Not a few days ago and I loved it! I need to get through Adam Silvera’s other book soon (I’ve already started it and am enjoying it so far).
Well we’re still in February so maybe you can squeeze it in before the end of the month. 🙂
