Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Wish Had …

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Wish Had …

A Sequel

When it comes to the last book in a series, or even just amazing standalone novels, I always have a problem accepting that there’s no more left. No more new adventures, no more from my favourite characters, and no more going back to this amazing world I discovered unless I re-read the book. So when it came to this week’s Top Ten Tuesday themed free-for-all I thought it was a perfect opportunity to talk about the books I’d love to see more of.

This isn’t going to be a case of me talking about the books I loved that I want to see more of just because they’re favourites of mine. Most of these are books where I felt the ending was left open enough that there is the potential for a sequel, maybe, one day in the future if I keep my fingers crossed.

top-ten-tuesday-57

If you haven’t read any of these books be warned there are potential spoilers ahead.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Heartless did have an amazing ending, it closed off Cath’s story at a place that stayed true to the original tale by Lewis Carroll, and if there was never a sequel I’d be satisfied with what we have so far. However I’d also be really interested if Marissa Meyer chose to carry on Cath’s story, showing us more of her journey as the Queen of Hearts after losing her own.

Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo

This series, and the Grisha trilogy, is one I know Leigh Bardugo is likely to go back to. After the ending to Crooked Kingdom I was more than satisfied with how the story ended for Kaz, Inez, Wylan and Jesper, but Nina’s story was left open. If Leigh Bardugo does go back to the Six of Crows duology I hope she writes more to Nina’s story.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I count The Night Circus as one of my all-time favourites. There is nothing I don’t love about it and all a new release has to do is be described as ‘perfect for fans of The Night Circus’ and it shoots to the top of my to-read list. However I desperately want more from Erin Morgenstern; it doesn’t even have to be set in the same world as The Night Circus, though there is a lot of potential to carry on the story be it with a sequel or prequel.

Shatter Me Trilogy by Tahereh Mafi

When I got to the end of Ignite Me I honestly thought there would be a fourth book in the series. The ending felt more like a placeholder until the next book was released rather than a definitive ending to a series. There was never a full scale rebellion, though that is hinted at as the next step, more a battle for Juliette’s small corner of the world.

Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children Trilogy by Ransom Riggs

I am aware Ransom Riggs is writing more to this series but it’s still going on my list this week. After everything Jacob and the rest of the Peculiars fought against in Wales and England in the past it’s time to explore the world of the Peculiars in America in the modern day. There’s a whole world of potential for Riggs to write about in his new series and I can’t wait.

Half Bad Trilogy by Sally Green

While I am happy with the way the trilogy ended for Nathan and Gabriel (happy being a relative word as this series broke my heart into pieces). There are still so many characters whose stories are left explored; let us find out what Arran and Deborah did while their brother was trapped in a cage, how they got involved in the Alliance, let us learn more about Edge or Celia or Marcus, or any of the characters whose stories could be just as interesting to read as Nathan’s was.

Passenger Duology by Alexandra Bracken

The ending to the Passenger duology was one I was more than satisfied with. It was fitting for the characters but still left it open as to what their future held. Like with Heartless if there was never a sequel I’d be satisfied with what we have but I’d love to see more about what Nicholas and Etta discover together after the events of the last book. I’m sure there’d be another threat sooner or later for them to face.

The Raven Cycle Series by Maggie Stiefvater

Again like with Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children Maggie Stiefvater is writing more to this series (who else is beyond excited for a trilogy from Ronan’s POV?) but it’s still going on my list this week. As much as I loved The Raven King I’m always going to want more stories about Blue and her Raven Boys, and there was so much potential that was left unexplored in the original series (obviously Stiefvater agrees or we wouldn’t be getting a new trilogy!)

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor

My thoughts on this series are similar to my thoughts on the Passenger duology. It had a wonderful ending, and if we never got a sequel I’d be satisfied with that, but I’d love to read more from Karou, and the rest of the characters I fell in love with about their lives after the events of the third book. I think I just basically want to read more from Laini Taylor.

More Than This by Patrick Ness

This book is a strange one to end up on my list this week because I don’t really want a sequel to it. I loved everything about More Than This, including the way it ended and the uncertainty surrounding Seth’s fate, but at the same time there’s part of me that needs to know what happened to him. Let’s be honest, our own imagination is never as good as what the author comes up with and until Patrick Ness weighs in my thoughts are just thoughts, not canon for Seth.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or what some of the books you’d love to see sequels for are.

  1. Wahhh great list. I could’ve SWORN you would’ve put A Conjuring of Light just cause you’d love to never see that series end! 😛 I do like the fact that you put The Night Circus in there. The author hasn’t written anything else in her life. Would be interesting to see if she can write a sequel to such a BIG hit. 😀

    1. Thanks Lashaan! Well I do never want to see the Shades of Magic series but I guess until I’ve read the last book I can’t say whether I feel it needs more or whether it will end on a satisfying note you know?
I think she’d be able to do it. The Night Circus is a massive hit though like you said so maybe she just wants to end on a high note. Honestly who knows but I would love to see more from her! 😀

  2. Omg I had no idea there’s going to be more to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children?!? Ahhhhh colour me excited!! Especially with the series from Ronan’s POV coming as well. ❤ ❤ I would also love to have another book by Erin Morgenstern! The Night Circus was sooooo good. Great list, Beth, I agree with pretty much all of it haha.

    1. Yeah it was announced a little while ago. I think it is supposed to be a sequel series, so the lives of Jacob and the Peculiars in America now. The Ronan series is definitely a highly anticipated release of mine, despite the fact we have no real info on it yet other than the fact that it’s in the works. 🙂
The Night Circus would be a book I would love to see a sequel of, like it would be my dream sequel. Maybe one day if I keep my fingers crossed! 😀
Thanks so much Analee! 😀 ❤

  3. It’d be SO interesting to see a sequel for Heartless! I have no idea how the story would go with that ending.

And The Raven Boys is a good choice. I really love Blue’s interactions with the boys and I do kind of want to see more of Blue and Gansey, especially. ❤

    1. Oh definitely, I think there’s still a lot of the story that could be explored still. Besides Cath was a really interesting character so I’d like to see how she changes after what happened at the end of Heartless.
I’m always going to want more from The Raven Boys, just the characters and their relationships were so well written and developed that I will take any opportunity to go back to their stories! 😀 ❤

  4. THERE’S GOING TO BE MORE IN THE RAVEN CYCLE SERIES?!?!?! I am just finding this out, obviously! Wow, I’m happy about this. Then again I am so game for anything Maggie Stiefvater writes!
I liked your list! … Even if I haven’t read most of the books! 😛

    1. Oh yes, I think Maggie announced on her Twitter that she outlines a trilogy(!) from Ronan’s POV so I think it’s in the works at the moment! God I’m so excited even though we technically know nothing about it at the moment.
Thanks so much Meghan. Hopefully if you pick any of these up you’ll really enjoy them! 😀

      1. Ahh I don’t use Twitter much, I should really get into it. Then I would be more in the loop. Then again this blog really keeps me updated too!
You’re welcome! Maybe some of them will come up in my endless tbr! 😀

  5. Oh I LOVE your choices so, so much Beth! I agree that there is so much more to be said and done with The Raven Boys and Blue, so many stories to be told, and I am SO eager to get more of that with this new series, about Ronan, ahhh I can’t WAIT ❤
More Than This…I could have screamed at that ending to be honest haha. I want to know so, so badly what happens next, even if ending the book like that was brilliant. And a good way to mess with our heads haha.

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀 ❤ Yeah I feel like Maggie Stiefvater could write a hundred books following on from The Raven Cycle series and there'd still be more stories to tell. It's just one series I really want to see carried on.
Oh it definitely messed with our heads. 🙂 And I guess it's a good way to end the book because even months after I read it I'm still thinking about it and about that ending. Still I need answers so badly!

    1. Thanks so much. I talk a lot about wanting sequels for books so it seemed a natural choice almost. 🙂
Oh a Night Circus TV show would be amazing, maybe even better than another book, but until then I’ll settle for re-reading The Night Circus over and over! 😀
      Thanks.

  6. I would definitely be down for a sequel to Heartless!! Which I actually mentioned in my review! I also definitely think the Shatter Me series was left open enough for another book!! You should totally read then again with the two novellas! One in between the first two books and the second in between the second book and the last book! That’s how I read them and it was amazing!! And also agree with Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I would love to revisit that world! Currently reading Sox of Crows, so I guess we shall see what I think about that when I get to it – but isn’t it Inej? I do love the Grisha world that she created though and I could definitely see another series being created within this world!

    1. I’m not sure if I mentioned the same in my review but I do think a sequel could really work for that book. There’s still a lot of Cath’s story left untold. I’m really hoping the author decides to continue with Shatter Me one day and that’s why Ignite Me was left open like that. It really feels like there needs to be another book just to end the story. I read them like that as well actually and I agree it was definitely amazing reading the series that way.
Maybe even a few novellas from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone world, just to catch up with the characters.
I hope you continue to enjoy Six of Crows. I’d be interested in seeing more from Inej, but I feel it was Nina’s story that was left open rather than Inej’s. Either way I just want more Grisha! 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I agree! But I think it also leaves the rest of the story open because we know the path cath takes as the queen of hearts… and I do like the openness of the Shatter Me series because it leaves stuff to the imagination … but I would not be against revisiting that world!! I just finished Six of Crows last night and it was AMAZING!!! I’ll probably read Kings Cage first and then crooked kingdom 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah there’s that as well, I think with Shatter Me though I felt the ending was too open, like there could have been another book to fill the gap so to speak.
Oh that’s wonderful about Six of Crows. I hope you enjoy King’s Cage, and I hope you manage to get through it quickly so you can jump into Crooked Kingdom! 😀

  7. Great topic pick for this week, and nice choices! I absolutely agree that The Night Circus should have had a sequel. I loved that book so much and wanted more! Does More Than This by Patrick Ness have any diversity in it? Any issues of mental illness or disabilities or anything like The Rest of Us Just Live Here does? Just curious.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much Megan. Yeah I’d settle for anything Night Circus related, even if it was just an anthology or something. I just need more! 🙂
I think there is a little diversity in More Than This but not as much as in The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I think if you enjoyed TROUJLH then you’ll enjoy More Than This as well, it’s an amazing book! 😀

  8. Shatter Me obsessed at a time over here! I remember I was devouring each book of the series with a light speed! I guess it’s not the greatest series I’ve read cause now I barely remember parts of the plot, but at the time it kept me awake a couple of nights and it was quiet the experience!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I have books like that. That I read and loved/were obsessed with when I was younger but now can’t remember some of the little details. Do you plan to maybe re-read the Shatter Me trilogy one day?
I thought it was a good series overall but I guess the ending just felt too open to be a proper conclusion for the series.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I was considering it! But this time I’ll try to buddy read it with someone so we can discuss it in more detail. Not sure when that will happen though hah too many good books out there that I still want to get my hands on asap )

  9. You know I’m with you on Six of Crows, Shatter Me, and Miss Peregrine’s! I feel like we’ve talked about wanting sequels to those so many times 😂.
I so hope Leigh does more of Nina’s story in a future book. It was definitely left open. That was probably the only part of the duology that I was disappointed about. I would have loved at least one more chapter in her POV at the end of Crooked Kingdom.
I completely agree with you about the end of Ignite Me. It was so open! I was expecting to see the rebellion and all of that and I remember Tahereh saying why she ended it that way but I don’t remember what she actually said. Maybe our book sequel powers will work their magic?? 🙈
And I so can’t wait for the Miss Peregrine’s sequel! I still think it’s funny how we were talking about wanting one and then a week later he announced it. That’s one sequel I will be reading asap once it’s released.
Also, I would love a sequel for Daughter of Smoke and Bone too. It definitely was a great ending but I think even great endings sometimes leave me wanting more.
    Great picks, Beth!! 😁💕

    1. Ha, yep I’m definitely aware of your thoughts on those series. We’ve had a lot of conversations about them already and maybe if we talk more about it we’ll subconsciously get the authors to go back to those stories and write more for them! 😀 It would have been nice to have Nina’s story closed off more in Crooked Kingdom but I guess this way it is left open for Leigh Bardugo to go back and write more as a new series. At least that’s what I’m hoping anyways.
I actually thought there’d be a fourth book in the works, or maybe even a novella like there was for between the first and the second book, and between the second and third, to tie off loose ends almost. I may look up what Tahereh Mafi said about the possibility of more books, I’d be interested in seeing why either way.
Yes that just proves how our conversations about wanting more books work. 😀 It seems like this is one sequel we will be getting which is amazing because like I said there’s a lot about the world left unexplored that I want to discover.
More in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series would be amazing, even if it was just novellas or something. I just need more!
      Thanks Melissa! 😀 ❤

      1. Right? It’s kind of like that one saying where if you sneeze someone is talking about you. Or something 😂. We could just talk about the books more and maybe they’ll get the urge to write more. Plus, I can never talk enough about my love for Six of Crows and Shatter Me! 🙈
True. And maybe there was so much left to explore with Nina that it wouldn’t have fit at the end? I really am hoping for it too. I wouldn’t mind a whole other duology or trilogy.
See, I thought there would be a novella as well! I knew there wouldn’t be another book but with the whole novella in the middle of each book I expected one after the last but nope. It’s something I hope happens one day.
Definitely! I can’t wait too see what he ends up doing for it.
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😊💕

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ve never heard about the sneezing thing, but I guess if we keep talking about these books maybe subconsciously the authors will get the hint and write more! 😀 We can hope either way can’t we?
I think Nina needs another book, especially after what happened to Matthias and what it did to her plans for after their job was done you know? Trying to squeeze all that in one or two chapters would have felt way too rushed.
Well we can hope we get more from that series. Be it another book or a novella I’d definitely read it! 😀 Maybe one day like you said. 🙂 ❤

      3. I’ve heard it about sneezing and dreaming lol. It’s a weird saying I picked up from somewhere when I was little. 🙈
Possibly and we can definitely hope either way! I mean some day there has to be more books, at least for Six of Crows. 😁
It really would have felt a bit rushed. Even though a big part of me wanted another Nina chapter I’m glad that she didn’t put out anything rushed. It just gives so much more to look forward to and explore. I definitely think Nina needs her own book.
        Yep! Maybe one day. 😁

      4. Oh I have loads of those, in fact most of my sayings are ones I’ve picked up from somewhere but ones I have no idea where from.
Some day, maybe if we hope hard enough we’ll eventually hear news of a sequel. I don’t think Leigh Bardugo is done with this world, not by a long shot!
Crooked Kingdom stands well as it is, and I guess the fact that she didn’t write a more solid conclusion for Nina means there’s potentially more change for a sequel series from her POV! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Same here. I’m thinking I heard my parents say them a lot and just sort of picked them up that way. 😂
I don’t think she is either! Are you signed up for her newsletter? Because she sent out a Valentine’s Day one today with a Nina and Matthias deleted scene. 😍

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Probably the same here, although I end up mashing different phases together and creating new ones a lot. People basically never know what I’m saying. 😀
No I’m not, but now you mentioned it I wish I was. I just want more Six of Crows in general! 🙂

  10. I agree, the ending to the Passenger duology was so satisfying but I still NEED more. I think Alex could write so much more in the world.

  11. I agree with the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. I loved the ending, I thought it was great. However, I kind of wanted to read more…like, it said that “stories were written about Akiva and Karou”…I wanna know the stories!!! I would LOVE to see how they work together to fully bring peace to their world. I will always remain hopeful that we get more from this world…I loved all those characters!!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh that would be amazing. Kind of like an anthology of myths and fairytales about the things Akiva and Karou did which have almost turned into legends. At least that’s the way I see it, and Laini Taylor would definitely be able to pull it off as well. I’d love to see more of the series. I feel there’s a lot still to discover, especially now they’re set about bring peace to their world. 🙂

  12. Omg…you know I totally agree. I always need more. I would have made The Wrath & The Dawn into a Trilogy or a standalone…this post made me think of that. How many books have we just said, “if only there was more?”
That’s why I’m so happy The Diabolic will have a sequel!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Common complaint of a bookworm, we need more books. I kind of thought The Wrath and the Dawn worked well as a duology but I wouldn’t say no to more books in that series! 😀
We’ve said it for a lot of books I’m sure.
I haven’t read The Diabolic yet but it’s on my to-read list (I managed to get a hardcover edition on Amazon for £5! I couldn’t resist) so I’m almost glad to see there’s a sequel in the works! 😀

  13. Yes, agree with The Night Circus and Ignite Me! I really hated the Ignite Me finale because it just left so much open and was really anti-climatic. 😤

And, yes, I’m way too excited for the Ronan trilogy. Any extra time spent in Ronan’s head with Pynch is a blessing. 😍 I still need to finish/read a couple of these series. 🙈

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The Night Circus just needs a sequel, and yeah I actually thought there would be a fourth book in the Shatter Me series just because of how open Ignite Me was. 🙂
God it’s going to be amazing. We don’t have a title, cover, blurb or release date and yet it’s still one of my most anticipated releases for whatever year it is out! 😀 ❤
