Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

Simon Vs. may not have been the first YA contemporary book I reviewed on my blog (that would have been My Life Next Door back in January 2016) but it was definitely the book that got me hooked again on the genre. Before picking this book up myself I’d heard plenty of amazing things about it, and as I was reading it myself I fell in love with Simon, Blue and all the other characters I met along the way. Simon Vs. is a fluffy and light contemporary book but there are deep messages in the story as well. Simon goes thought a lot throughout the course of the story, being blackmailed, but there are plenty of people still on his side.

“It is definitely annoying that straight (and white, for that matter) is the default, and that the only people who have to think about their identity are the ones who don’t fit that mold. Straight people really should have to come out, and the more awkward it is, the better. Awkwardness should be a requirement.”

      1. Hello, I’m done reading it. I have come to realize that it’s so hard to put down a book you just read and decide what book you should be reading next. I mean, how can you expect nothing but greater story than the previous one. What do you think I should read next? I have Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe or We Are The Ants, please help me.

      2. Great to hear, and yeah that can be a real struggle sometimes, especially if it’s a book you enjoyed like I’m assuming you did this one! 🙂
Well of those two I’ve only read Aristotle and Dante but I loved that one so either way I’d recommend picking up that one up next. 😀

  1. I’ve heard so many great things about this book! Especially about how cute it is. I’m actually planning on reading it after The Song Rising because I have a feeling I’m going to need a few light contemporaries after that. It definitely sounds like a book that will end up becoming one of my favorites. Great pick for this week, Beth!! 😊

    1. It is definitely a really cute book, and I’m pretty sure all the good things you’ve heard about it are true as well. Ohh saving it for after The Song Rising is a good idea. Once you’ve finished it (TSR) you’ll have to let me know if I’ll need to stock up on some light hearted contemporary reads to recover a little.
Thanks so much Melissa! 😀 ❤

  2. Simon is such a wonderful, feel-good book for sure 🙂 I loved it so much, and the characters are some of my favorites. The dynamics between them, and the family dynamics (all of them watching reality shows and stuff) is SO cute, everything I love in a contemporary 🙂 Great choice Beth!

    1. That’s the perfect way to describe this book, ‘feel-good’. I couldn’t put it down when I started and it definitely made me want to pick up more YA contemporary books after I finished. The family dynamic was amazing I agree but I remember enjoying reading about Simon and his friends a little more. It was all so wonderfully written, I don’t think I had any complaints about this book! 😀
      Thanks Marie! 🙂

    1. That’s definitely the sign of a good book though isn’t it? When you stay up until the early hours just because you can’t put it down. I read Simon Vs in one day as well. I just needed to find out who Blue was and what would happen next for Simon as well. 🙂

  3. Nice diverse pick this week, Beth! This one is actually still on my TBR, but hoping to read it this year for #ReadDiverse2017. I was supposed to read it for the #DAReadAThon, but that didn’t happen. I don’t think I’ve heard anything bad about this book… so that tells me something!! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Megan, and yeah this was one of the first diverse books I read and a reviewed on my blog. Hopefully it will help kickstart my goal to read more diverse books in 2017 as well! I’d highly recommend this one, it’s an amazing book which more than deserves the amazing things you’ve likely heard about it!

    1. I think I must have been like that at first as well. Luckily when this book first made it on my radar everyone was posting about it so it was easy to remember it and eventually get around to reading it. It seems to have disappeared a little from WordPress but it’s an amazing book so I’d recommend picking it up ASAP. 🙂

    1. It’s a brilliant book. I only really discovered it when everyone else was raving about it but I’m so glad I picked it up in the end. There were a couple of quotes I was trying to choose between but I just love the conversations Simon and Blue have around this topic so had to include this one in the end! 🙂

  5. Simon is definitely my favorite contemporary (right next to Fangirl). It is such an adorable, funny, and heartfelt book that I recommend to everyone. I’m pretty sure the movie will be good because I’m absolutely loving the cast

    1. It’s a favourite contemporary of mine as well, next to Fangirl too but also anything written by Sarah Dessen or Kasie West. 😀
I didn’t even know a movie was in the works until like thirty second ago but I’m sure it will be amazing and I really need to check out who’s been cast so far. 🙂

  6. Yeah, this is one that I’ve actually read! I absolutely loved this one; it’s still one of my favorites. How excited are you for the movie? Every time someone gets cast, I start fangirling. 😀
