Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant to Read but Didn’t Get to (but Totally Plan to).
I got through some amazing books in 2016, there were a lot of new favourites I could have picked from for my top read of 2016, but even more than that there were so many books I meant to but didn’t get around to released last year. I’d like to say I’ll get around to most of the books on this list at some point during 2017 but then again there are books on my to-read list from 2015 and before then so really who knows when I’ll pick these books up.
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
There was so much hype for this book in the run up to its release, and after its release I saw so many amazing reviews on WordPress. However, before I could pick up Lady Midnight I needed to read the rest of the Shadowhunter books. I did already read the first three back when they were released but that was so long ago I feel I really need to re-read them, and I did not have the time last year to read six TMI books, three TID books, as well as the anthology collections before starting on this one.
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Truthwitch seems to be a book you either love or hate, and I think for the most part I’ve seen more negative reviews than positive. This seems to be a book you need to be in the right mood to read, and although I added it to my to-read list when it was first released I’ve yet to be in the right mood to actually pick it up.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
Before the release of this book I picked up Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson and really loved it, I then added all her other books onto my to-read list with the hope of starting The Unexpected Everything in the summer. For some reason, and I’m not quite sure why, I never got around to it, which is a shame because I’ve seen some amazing reviews for this book so far.
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
This was a book I was really excited for because I really enjoyed Kendare Blake’s Goddess War series, however the first few reviews I saw in the run-up to its release were negative which put me off a little. I still have plans to read Three Dark Crowns, hopefully sometime during the beginning of this year, but I will be going into it with low expectations which may actually mean I enjoy it a little more.
Morning Star by Pierce Brown
The Red Rising trilogy is one of my all-time favourite sci-fi series, despite the slow start to Red Rising which I nearly gave up on, and after the cliff-hanger ending to Golden Son left me so excited for Morning Star to be released. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things for this book and finally reading it, as well as re-reading both Red Rising and Golden Son, is at the top of my to-read list for 2017.
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
I am a huge history fan and one of my favourite topics to learn and read about is Jack the Ripper, simply because despite knowing so much about his crimes we know so little about him as a person. When I saw the title for this book I immediately added it to my to-read list. There haven’t been many reviews for this book on WordPress but the ones I’ve seen have been positive ones that have just made me want to run out and pick up a copy of this book to get started on immediately.
A Million Worlds with You by Claudia Gray
Both A Thousand Pieces of You and Ten Thousand Skies Above You are favourite books of mine, with really gorgeous covers as well, and after the cliff-hanger ending to Ten Thousand Skies Above You I was so excited for the release of the final book in the trilogy. My only excuse for not having read this book before now is that by the time I got my hands on my copy it was December and, well, that was not an easy month to find spare time to read in.
The Shadow Hour by Melissa Grey
The Girl at Midnight was such an amazing book, and one of my favourite reads of 2015. So as such I’m not sure why I never got around to picking up the second book in the series. Still The Shadow Hour is on my to-read list for this year but I’m thinking I’ll wait until closer to the release date of the third book to pick it up.
Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine
This was another book where I loved the first of the series, but for some reason never found time for the second in the series. Again I’ll likely wait until closer to the release date of the third book to pick up Paper and Fire.
Spindle by E.K. Johnston
I didn’t even realise A Thousand Nights would have a companion novel, but when I discovered Spindle was being released it went to the top of my to-read list along with the rest of my most anticipated releases of 2016. Then I seem to have forgotten all about the fact that it was being released and never got around to picking up a copy and getting started on it.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the top 2016 releases you meant to read but didn’t get to are.
Ohhhh very interesting list. Got to admit those TBR books are hard to keep up with… Can’t blame you for not being able to read them when you wanted to! Of all those books, Morning Star is the one that seemed to have the most hype throughout the year (after all.. it’s the last book in the series right? hahah) and also Lady Midnight, cause… you know… it’s mega popular? Hahhaha 😀

Thanks so much, and yeah keeping up with my TBR list is something I never really managed to get the hang of. I wonder at times why I do keep one. Last book in the series and from what I understand from everyone’s reviews and all the hype an amazing end to the trilogy too. I feel that’s why I need to get around to Lady Midnight soon; it’s so popular and I have no idea what I’m missing! 🙂

Similar lists here! I have a copy of Lady Midnight I got free from Simon and Schuster, so that was nice! I love subscribing to them! I can only read it on a certain app, so it’s not like I have it on my Kindle, but I still love that cover. And I have always wanted to read a book by Clare. I wonder if you have to read the other series she has written first!

Hopefully we’ll get around to them sometime soon in that case. Ohh, that’s great you got it for free, just a shame you can only read it on certain apps. I think that would bug me a little because I’m always on my Kindle.
I think when it comes to Lady Midnight you do need to read her previous books first, simply because I know a lot of the characters in The Mortal Instrument books do appear in this new one, and I think the story kind of carries on from that series as well.

Oh good! I love getting free books but yes, they are always all across platforms…some aren’t Kindle compatible and only work on certain apps so I download them. It’s frustrating but when it comes to having little or no money, you kind of have to do it to read new releases (esp when discounted or free).

I’m surprised not all of them are Kindle compatible, that seems to be the main way people read eBooks now.
But hey, if it gets you free books then it gets you free books! 😀

Waiting for the next book might help with Three Dark Crowns! I would have been less angry with it if I had had the following part!

Good idea actually. I never thought of doing that but I guess it may help me enjoy the story a little more if I can jump straight into the second book where, hopefully, the plot picks up a little. 🙂

There are so many books that Cassandra Clare has written, it’s understandable that you haven’t gotten around to Lady Midnight! I really hope you do get the chance to read it soon though, because it’s so good! I really think it’s the best work that Clare has written, so hopefully you get to read it ASAP! 🙂

I’m going to probably have to read a little at a time, maybe three books then break then another three and so on until I’ve got through them all. My aim is to get through them all this year, I really want to get started on Lady Midnight as soon as possible because I’ve heard so many amazing things about it! 😀

I really enjoyed Truthwitch, and I am reading Morning Star at the moment. There are so many books ahhh.

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed Truthwitch. I seem to have heard from most people the opposite when it comes to that book. And I hope you enjoy Morning Star, I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing book! 😀

I can’t wait for you to read that Morgan Matson book – though you can wait for it to be the summer, it’d be a perfect summer read as well 😀 I need to read A Million Worlds With You soon as well, I can’t wait to see how this series end 🙂

Yeah The Unexpected Everything is on my to-read list for this summer, and hopefully this time I’ll actually manage to get around to it! 🙂
I actually finished A Million Worlds With You today and really loved it, it’s the perfect ending to the series so I hope you enjoy it as well Marie! 😀 ❤

Ohhh really, well I’m glad to hear it! I need to order it soon 😀

I keep forgetting about that Rachel Caine series. I adore the Moganville Vampire books, I have no idea why I haven’t even read the first book in this series yet. Gotta get on that.

I don’t think it’s as popular as her Morganville Vampire books, but it’s a brilliant series so I hope you manage to get around to it soon and I hope you really enjoy it as well! 😀

Spindle looks so pretty! I haven’t read A Thousand Nights, either, will add both to my list.

Spindle looks just gorgeous doesn’t it? A Thousand Nights is amazing as well, it’s a beautiful book, both in terms of the cover and the story, so I hope you enjoy that one and Spindle when you get around to it. 🙂

Looks interesting! Nice list 🙂 Really looking forward to hearing what you think of Three Dark Crowns and Stalking Jack the Ripper

Thanks so much. I’m looking forwards to reading both of them (and everything else on this list honestly) and of course I’ll post reviews when I have finished them both. 🙂

I was disappointed with Three Dark Crowns – so I hope you like it more than I did!! I have a copy of Lady Midnight, but I obviously have to read all the other books first before jumping into that one!! I also cannot wait to get around to Spindle!! Great list 🙂

Yeah I’ve heard that from a few people about Three Dark Crowns so I’ll be going into it with lowered expectations. Maybe that’ll help me enjoy it more.
And I’m the same, need to get through all the other Shadowhunter books before I can start Lady Midnight, got a lot to get through as well.
Spindle does sound amazing doesn’t it? Thanks so much Lauren! 😀

I hope you enjoy it more than I did! I just found it too slow and there were too many characters for me to keep up with who was who easily … I haven’t read a single Clare book *embarrassing*

I hope so too, I haven’t seen many positive review for this book yet but I’m going in with an open mind. You’re not alone, I’ve only read three but I’m sure there are other people out there who haven’t read any yet. 🙂

The only one I’ve read on your list is Lady Midnight. Which I loved a lot and I so can’t wait for Lord of Shadows. But yeah, I also planned on reading Three Dark Crowns and Stalking Jack the Ripper last year but never got around to either of them. And Red Rising and the rest of the Firebird books are actually on my list for this year.
Speaking of Lady Midnight, have you been watching Shadowhunters? I’ve only seen episode one so far and wasn’t all that into it but my sister said episode two is way better. I can’t wait to see what they end up doing this season. 😁
Great picks for this week, Beth! 💕

I’ve heard plenty of good things about Lady Midnight, and hopefully if I get through the Shadowhunter books up until then Lord of Shadows will have been released and I can jump straight into that one as well.
I really hope you enjoy Three Dark Crowns and Stalking Jack the Ripper when you get around to them Melissa, and oh I think you’ll really enjoy the Red Rising and Firebird series, both are favourites of mine and I actually finished A Million Worlds With You today and LOVED it!
I have been watching it, I haven’t gotten started on season two yet but I have seen all of season one. It is really good, what I’ve seen so far, and yeah I’m excited to see what they do with this season! 😀
Thanks so much Melissa! ❤ 🙂

I hope you end up enjoying all of the Shadowhunters books as much as I did/have whenever you do get to them. ♥
I hope so too and I’m glad to hear that you loved the last Firebird book. I’m so excited to finally continue that series. I swear 2017 is going to be the year where I tackle all of the series I’ve been putting off finishing lol.
Season one was definitely fantastic and I’m hoping season two will be as well.
You’re welcome, Beth!! 💕
Also, I see that you posted your Gilded Cage review. I started reading it today and I’m loving it so much so far. I will definitely be checking out your review once I finish it. 😊

I hope so too, and it’s my aim to get around to them all as well as Lady Midnight before this year is over! 🙂
That’s a good aim. I need to say 2017 will be the year I get through some of the books I’ve brought but are sitting on my bookshelves just waiting to be read still.
I think it will be, plenty of people seemed to have loved it so far.
That’s brilliant to hear, I hope you enjoy the rest of the book just as much in that case, and I’ll look forwards to hearing your thoughts on it as well! 😀 ❤

Well if you do then I look forward to hearing your thoughts. 😀
That’s a good goal too. And something I need to to try to do as well. Read more books that are already owned and buy less lol.
I hope so too. I’m half way through now and am still loving is so I’d say that is a good sign. 😊

Of course, I’ll be sure to let you know when I start and what I think when I finish them as well! 😀
I say that but I did go out and buy loads of books last Friday, so if that was a New Years Resolution of mine it’s one I’ve already failed at!
That is a very good sign, hopefully the rest will be as good as the first half was! 😀

I can’t wait! 😁
Lol ah us bookworms and wanting to buy less but also wanting to buy more. There should be a book buyers anonymous. I think the only thing keeping me from buying a ton of books is not having any money until I get paid. 🙈

I’m not sure how good I’d be at sticking to a Book Buyers Anonymous club. I always seem to find myself in the wanting to buy more half of the process rather than the wanting to buy less half! 😀

I included Three Dark Crowns on my list this week, too. I also really need to catch up with the Firebird series. I read the first book shortly after it came out, but haven’t picked up book two or three even though I absolutely adored the first one. The only one of these I’ve read was Truthwitch which I honestly wasn’t a big fan of, but lots of people have loved that book so hopefully you like it more than I did 🙂
Here’s my TTT if you’re interested and haven’t seen it yet: https://kourtnireads.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/2016-releases-i-didnt-get-to-but-totally-plan-to-read/

Yeah I’ve been trying to find time for Three Dark Crowns for a while now. Ohh I hope you enjoy the rest of the Firebird series. I finished A Million Worlds With You earlier today and actually really enjoyed it, it’s a wonderful end to the series.
I’ve heard lots of people say that about Truthwitch but I think I’ve got to at least give it a try right. Hopefully I’ll be one of the ones who enjoys it. 🙂
Thanks for the link. I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 😀

Ah what a great looking list haha! I’ve only read two of these books myself (Lady Midnight and Stalking Jack the Ripper) but I was really hoping to read Truthwitch, The Unexpected Everything, and Three Dark Crowns last year, but could never find the time to read them. Hopefully we can both get around to reading them sometime this year! 😀
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks so much Azia, oh did you enjoy the two you’ve read then. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Lady Midnight but pretty much nothing about Stalking Jack the Ripper. Hopefully we do find the time for all of these books and more, we have 12 months pretty much, should be more than enough time right? 🙂

I absolutely LOVED Lady Midnight. I’d say it was in my top 5 reads last year. And SJTR was surprisingly good. I had high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint. I’m really looking forward to the sequel. And I feel like we say that every year XD Is 12 months ever enough? LOL
LikeLiked by 1 person
Plenty of people have said that about Lady Midnight. It makes me really want to get around to it but then I remember the other nine books I’ll have to get through before I can start on that one. That’s good about SJTR as well, I have really high expectations for that one.
So far 12 months has never been enough but one year it may be! 🙂

LOL, yeah it might be best to read TMI and TIF before delving into Lady Midnight, which brings back quite a few characters from the previous books. But I loved both those series, so I hope you enjoy them once you get to them. SJTR, too! 🙂

That can be one of my aims for this year then, to manage to get around to both series and start Lady Midnight as well! 🙂

Out of your list, the only two I’ve read are TUE and Three Dark Crowns… both of which I can recommend, but TUE more than TDC because TDC was a bit underwhelming (though interesting enough to check out, at the very least).
Speaking of Spindle, there’s apparently a short novella between A Thousand Nights and Spindle! I think it’s called The Garden of Three Hundred Flowers – have you read that yet?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah I’ve seen plenty of reviews (one of which I think was yours) that say the same about Three Dark Crowns so I’ll be going into it with lowered expectations and maybe that’ll help. TUE I’m actually really excited for because I really need to jump back in to Morgan Matson’s books.
Oh I hadn’t actually heard of that but thanks so much for letting me know Reg. Have you read it yet? I’ll definitely have to check it out though. I can use it to fill my time waiting until I can get my hands on a copy of Spindle! 😀

I haven’t! I’m not sure if I will because truth be told I didn’t love A Thousand Nights, haha. I don’t think I’d even pick up Spindle, tbh. 🙈

Oh that’s a shame, but at least you know it’s there if you ever decided to pick it up. Plus you’re the reason I know about it now so thanks again so much for that! 😀

I’m definitely solidly on the “hell yes Truthwitch” side of things, although I do sort of see why others dislike it. I hope you enjoy it when you pick it up! A 2016 release I didn’t get to was Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands.

Hopefully I’ll be on the ‘hell yes’ side of Truthwitch as well. I’m waiting until I’m in the right mood to pick it up so I give myself the best chance of enjoying it.
Oh in that case I hope you’ll find the time to get round to Mark of the Plague this year, and I hope you enjoy it as well! 🙂

It was released back in March wasn’t it? I can’t believe it’s been out that long already?! Hopefully yes, I do have all the other Shadowhunter books to get around to but I have 12 months of this year to get through them all. I think I can do it! 😀
