2016 End of Year Survey

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s hoping you all have an amazing 2017. To celebrate the new year and look back at my reading journey throughout 2016 I decided to take part in the End of Year Survey created and hosted by Jamie at The Perpetual Page-Turner.

2016-end-of-year-survey

Last year I saw a couple of bloggers on WordPress taking part in this. It looked like such a fun way to look back over the year but as I’d already posted an end of year review for 2015 I didn’t see the point in doing another one. Still I remember the survey and now we’ve reached the end of 2016 I’ve taken the opportunity to take part in it myself.

2016-reading-stats

Number of Books I Read:

Number of Re-Reads:

Nine. Quite a few I think but there were some books I read before starting my blog that I wanted to review so obviously I needed to re-read them.

Genre I Read the Most from:

Fantasy. Probably no surprise there.

Best Book I Read in 2016?

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Check out my review here.

After reading Six of Crows to say I was excited for the second, and final, book in the duology is an understatement. I had so many expectations for Crooked Kingdom and when I finally got around to it the book not only met but exceeded them.

Crooked Kingdom

Book I was Excited about and Thought I was going to Love more but didn’t?

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye
Check out my review here.

I had high hopes for this book because the blurb made it sound epic. However what I thought would be a battle to the death was more a game of who could decorate Russia the better; add in the love triangle and insta-love tropes and The Crown’s Game was just a disappointment to me.

The Crown's Game

Most Surprising Book I Read (in a Good Way or Bad Way)?

The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry and When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore
Check out my review for The Love That Split the World here, and my review for When the Moon Was Ours here.

Honestly I can’t pick between the two. I went into both these books with no expectations. I picked them up on a whim, I’m still not sure what led me to either of them in the first place, and came out the other end in love with the story, the characters, the writing, basically everything.

Book I “Pushed” the Most People to Read (and they did)?

I’m not sure if there’s any one book I can say I pushed people towards, I recommend a load of books but whether people decide to read them because of my recommendations is another thing all together. I know I recommended the Shades of Magic series to pretty much everyone throughout 2016 though.

Favourite New Author I Discovered in 2016?

Sarah J. Maas

It seems really strange to think that I only picked up both the Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series’ in 2016. I feel like given how much I love both series and how many books she’s released so far that I’ve been reading her work a lot longer than that.

Best Book from a Genre I Don’t Typically Read/Was Out of my Comfort Zone?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Check out my review here.

I don’t read a lot of historical fiction but of the books I have read from that genre all of them are five-star, favourite reads of mine so it’s no surprise The Song of Achilles was the same. I read this book back in August and even now I’m still not over how it ended, although I knew it was coming.

The Song of Achilles

Most Action-packed/Thrilling/Un-put-down-able Book of the Year?

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Check out my review here.

Alongside both Crooked Kingdom and Blood for Blood, which I have mentioned previously in this post, Gemina was an incredible, fast-paced and addictive read. For most of Gemina I was glued to my book, turning the pages faster and faster trying to find out what happened next and reach some kind of happy conclusion for Nik, Hanna and Ella.

Gemina

Book I Read in 2016 that I am Most Likely to Re-read Next Year?

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West
Check out my review here.

While I could say pretty much any YA contemporary book I read and loved this year (when it comes to re-reads I tend to pick up YA contemporaries I’ve loved more than any other genre) the most likely one is P.S. I Like You. Kasie West has quickly become one of my favourite YA contemporary authors and P.S. I Like You, as well as being the first book by her I picked up, remains my favourite.

P.S. I Like You

Favourite Cover of a Book I Read in 2016?

I am a huge cover whore. The majority of books I read are picked up because of how pretty the cover is, but my favourites from this year (because I couldn’t pick just one) are the covers from The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater.

The Raven Cycle

Most Memorable Character of 2016?

Again I can’t choose just one so I’m going to pick all of the Raven Boys and Blue from The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. They’re all different, but incredibly written and heartbreaking in some cases, characters who are drawn together in their quest to find Glendower but who seem more like family than simply friends.

Most Beautifully Written Book I Read in 2016?

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore
Check out my review here.

I feel like for this I could say any magical realism book I picked up this year, and there are a few, but there was something about When the Moon Was Ours that stayed with me longer than all the rest. It was beautifully written, lyrical and poetic, and it made me believe in magic again.

When the Moon Was Ours

Most Thought-Provoking/Life-Changing Book I Read in 2016?

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
Check out my review here.

This book was a really hard one for me to read because of the subject matter but in the end it was a fantastic book. The characters were real, heartbreaking so, and although the subject matter did make me uncomfortable at times it was well-written and expertly handled throughout the story.

The Book I Can’t Believe I Waited Until 2016 to Finally Read?

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Check out my review here.

Actually I’d say the whole of the Chaos Walking series for this question. It was an addictive trilogy, one I’d been told amazing things about so many times before I picked it up but after reading I still found it’d beat all my expectations.

On the other hand waiting until now meant I didn’t have to deal with any cliffhangers, or desperate waits for the next book to be released.

Chaos Walking

Favourite Passage/Quote from a Book I Read in 2016?

“The truth is, Rosemary, that you are capable of anything. Good or bad. You always have been, and you always will be. Given the right push, you, too, could do horrible things. That darkness exists within all of us. You think every soldier who picked up a cutter gun was a bad person? No. She was just doing what the soldier next to her was doing, who was doing what the soldier next to her was doing, and so on and so on. And I bet most of them – not all, but most – who made it through the war spent a long time after trying to understand what they’d done. Wondering how they ever could have done it in the first place. Wondering when killing became so comfortable.”

The Book that Shocked me the Most

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Check out my review here.

Before I picked up this book I’d heard about the twist at the end, honestly it’s hard not to, and as I was reading I thought I’d guessed what the twist was. Turned out I was wrong, really wrong, I was completely gobsmacked when the real twist was revealed and think I read the rest of the book with my mouth hanging open in shock.

We Were Liars

OTP OF THE YEAR (I will go down with this Ship!)

Jesper and Wylan
Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo

I don’t tend to have many OTPs when it comes to books but I made an exception for these two. As much as I loved all the Six of Crows couples Jesper and Wylan were my favourites; their relationship was sweet, kind of hilarious in places, and I loved the way they supported one another throughout.

Six of Crows Series

Favourite Non-Romantic Relationship of the Year

Kell and Rhys
Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Despite some ups and downs between them, especially in A Darker Shade of Magic, Rhys and Kell are practically brothers. There’s a lot of hidden feelings, inadequacies and darkness between the two of them in A Gathering of Shadows but I loved their interactions with one another.

Shades of Magic

Favourite Book I Read in 2016 from an Author I’ve Read Previously

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Check out my review here.

I loved Alexandra Bracken’s Darkest Minds series so when I saw she had a new book I was always going to check it out, and the fact that it was a time travel book only added to my curiosity. Passenger turned out to be amazing, even better than The Darkest Minds series in my opinion, it’s one of my all-time favourite time travel books and one of my favourite reads from this year as well.

Passenger

Best Book I Read in 2016 that I Read Based Solely on a Recommendation from Somebody Else/Peer Pressure?

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West
Check out my review here.

I’d always been meaning to read Kasie West’s books, she’d been on my to-read list for ages though so who knows when I would have got around to picking one up. Then I saw an amazing review for P.S. I Like You on Jill’s blog, which you can check out here, and knew I had to pick this book up and get started immediately. I did, and loved it just as much as I’d hoped.

Newest Fictional Crush from a Book I Read in 2016?

Newt Scamander
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

Granted this is more because of the movie than the book but Newt is just so adorable. He’s kind, sweet, sort of awkward, he cares so much about all the creatures in his case and he’s Hufflepuff as well, which is also my Hogwarts house according to Pottermore.

Best 2016 Debut I Read?

The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig and The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
Check out my review for The Girl from Everywhere here and my review for The Star-Touched Queen here.

It’s impossible to pick between these two. The Girl from Everywhere is another favourite time travel book of mine, with an amazing concept behind the travel that I just fell in love with. The Star-Touched Queen was in the running for my favourite book of the year until Crooked Kingdom came along, there was nothing about it I didn’t love.

Best World Building/Most Vivid Setting I Read this Year?

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi and Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova
Check out my review for The Star-Touched Queen here and my review for Labyrinth Lost here.

As a lover of fantasy books more than any others a unique world is something that I love reading more than anything else, and both The Star-Touched Queen and Labyrinth Lost had that in spades. The Star-Touched Queen reminded me of The Night Circus, pure magic and wonder everywhere you looked and Labyrinth Lost was described as Wonderland with Greek mythology influences so I was bound to love it from the start.

Book that Put a Smile on my Face/Was the Most Fun to Read?

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows
Check out my review here.

It was only after I received this book in one of my Owl Crate subscription boxes that I started seeing all the reviews for it on WordPress, and all those reviews highlighted one thing; the humour. My Lady Jane was hilarious, surprising considering the way the real Jane Grey’s story ended, I only wish the humour had continued in the second half like it did in the first.

My Lady Jane

Book that made me Cry or Nearly Cry in 2016?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Check out my review here.

Despite knowing how the story would end for Achilles and Patroclus I was still unprepared for it when it actually happened, and I was devastated. It took me a while to move on from this book, and even now I still wouldn’t say I’m completely over it. The Song of Achilles ripped out my heart, tore it to pieces and laughed at my pain.

The Song of Achilles

Hidden Gem of the Year?

A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry
Check out my review here.

As far as magical realism books go this is one of the more obscure ones which doesn’t seem to have a lot of recognition, which is a shame. I can’t say A Fierce and Subtle Poison is my favourite that I’ve read from the genre but it’s still a wonderful book and it deserves a lot more recognition than it currently has.

A Fierce and Subtle Poison

Book that Crushed your Soul?

It shouldn’t come as any surprise but my answer for this one is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller again.

Most Unique Book I Read in 2016?

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Check out my review here.

Everything from the concept, what happens to the children who travel and have adventures in fantasy worlds when they come back home again, to the characters, there was so much diversity in this book, to the world building, the descriptions of all the worlds the children had visited felt real even though we didn’t see them with our own eyes, was incredibly well done.

Book that made me the Most Mad (Doesn’t Necessarily Mean I didn’t Like it)?

Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan
Check out my review here.

I had high hopes for this book, I love fairytale retellings and I hadn’t seen many about Rapunzel before so I was excited to get my hands on Reign of Shadows. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. The plot was weak, the characters were flat, and the world-building pretty much non-existent. In fact, between this book and Stealing Snow I’m not sure which is my worst read of 2016.

New Favourite Book Blog I Discovered in 2016?

I’d say pretty much every person I’ve spoke to on WordPress, every person I follow, has a fantastic blog I’m pleased I discovered.

Some of the people who I talk to a fair bit, be you more recent or older followers, and who I am happy I had the opportunity to meet through WordPress though are; Stephanie, JillDonna, Lauren, Anna, MarieLilly, Kate, Sammie, Melissa, Niraja, Azia, Reg, Fadwa, and Gretchen. These are only a small fraction of the people who I admire, there are so many other bloggers out there who publish amazing posts and who I am so glad I started following.

Favourite Review that I Wrote in 2016?

Honestly I don’t really have a favourite. I have reviews for favourite books I’ve read this year but I’ve talked about that more than enough in previous section. In terms of views my most popular review was for A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas so we’ll go with that one for my favourite as well.

A Court of Mist and Fury

Best Discussion/Non-review Post I had on my blog?

Now this one I do have a favourite for. It would have to be when I reached my one year blogiversary and post my answers to the Q&A session I had. I split it into two parts, you can check out part one here and part two here, because I had a fair few questions to answer and it was so much fun answering everything you all asked me. I only hope people enjoyed reading my answers too.

Best Event that I Participated in (Author Signings, Festivals, Virtual Events, Memes, etc.)?

Definitely definitely going to YALC in London in July. I’d never been to a convention like this before but it was an amazing experience and probably one of the best weekends of my life. I met some amazing authors and some amazing people as well, I got plenty of books signed and even got a few eagerly anticipated ARCs to get started on. It was a wonderful weekend and I’m looking forwards to going back again this year.

Best Moment of Bookish/Blogging Life in 2016?

Reaching my one year blogiversary in November. For a while I wasn’t sure it would happen, before this one I had three other blogs that eventually fizzled out, but I kept going and seeing the notification come up on WordPress telling me I’d been blogging for one year was so rewarding.

Most Challenging Thing about Blogging or your Reading Life this Year?

Time management more than anything else. Every blogger probably suffers from this at one point or another, and I’ve managed to get a system in place for the most part, but blogging takes up a lot more time than I ever thought it would. When I first started way back when it was definitely a challenge keeping on top of everything.

Most Popular Post this Year on your Blog (Whether it be by Comments or Views)?

In terms of views, because I’m not sure how to find out what post got the most comments without trawling through a year’s worth of blog posts, it’s the Anonymous Bookaholics tag which got 331 views, more than double what my next most popular post got.

Anonymous Bookaholics

Post I Wished got a Little more Love?

There’s no one particular post but in general I’ve noticed the reviews I write tend to get the least views/likes/comments when compared to the book tags and weekly features I post.

Best Bookish Discovery (Book Related Sites, Book Stores, etc.)?

Fairy Loot subscription boxes. I was already subscribed to Owl Crate before I started blogging and I loved getting my boxes each month, filled with bookish goodies and a new release in hardcover, but the shipping was expensive and it always took ages to arrive from the US. Then around June I discovered Fairy Loot, a fantasy focused subscription box based in the UK, and it was a match made in heaven so to speak. I’ve yet to be disappointed with one of their boxes and now I’m eagerly awaiting the January one being sent out to me.

One Book I Didn’t get to in 2016 but will be my Number 1 Priority in 2017?

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

It’s not a 2016 release but it is a book I meant to get around to last year, and even worse this was originally a book I didn’t get around to in 2015 and planned to pick up last year  according to one of my Top Ten Tuesday lists. To say I need to make it a priority in 2017 feels like an understatement.

The Book I am Most Anticipating for 2017 (Non-debut)?

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

After the way A Gathering of Shadows ended (an ending I read back in February 2016 mind you) I have been desperate to get my hands on this book. I need to know how everything ends for Lila, Kell and Rhys and the fact that I’ve been waiting for a year already is too much.

Not long to go until February now but it still feels like too long to wait.

2017 Debut I am Most Anticipating?

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of this book from NetGalley and I am planning to start it next, but ever since I first saw this book on Goodreads I have heard nothing but amazing things about Caraval. Everyone who has read it so far has loved it and hopefully it will be the same for me as well.

Series Ending/A Sequel I am Most Anticipating in 2017?

Series ending: A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Sequel: The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon

One Thing I Hope to Accomplish or do in your Reading/Blogging Life in 2017?

In terms of reading it will be to surpass my 2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge. I set myself a target of 100 books so I think I’ll be able to manage that easily, depending on how well I do in the first few months I may think of increasing it to 125 or even 150.

In terms of blogging it will be to reach my two year blogiversary. I hit one year in November and for me it was such an incredible achievement so here’s hoping I can reach two years as well.

A 2017 Release I’ve already Read and Recommend to Everyone:

Frostblood by Elly Blake and Gilded Cage by Vic James
Check out my review for Frostblood here, my review for Gilded Cage will be posted closer to the release date.

Both of these books were incredible, beyond incredible in fact. Frostblood jumps right into the action, it’s fast-paced and addictive but despite this the character development and world building don’t fall in the wayside. Gilded Cage had a slower start but by the end I was hooked, and given the way it ended I desperately need the second book in the series to carry on the story.

2017-release-i-recommend

This was an extremely long post so congratulations if you made it all the way to the end. I had a lot of fun filling in this survey, and it was certainly interesting looking back over my year both in terms of blogging and in terms of the books I read.

Have you taken part in the 2016 End of Year Survey? if you did let me know and I’ll be sure to check out your post if I haven’t already.

Have you read any of the books on my list? If so what did you think of them, would any make your list for favourite read from 2016? Let me know.

  1. Crooked Kingdom is such an amazing book! And it’s definitely no surprise that it was your favourite book of the year! ❤
Also very happy to see The Chaos Walking trilogy as your favourite series! Those books are simply wonderful and they are my all time favourite trilogy.
I can't wait to read The Song of Achilles! I have heard amazing things about it and it does sound like a book I would really enjoy. Though I'm sure that it will break my heart as well, as I do know how their story ends. That might be also the reason why I have been pushing it back so much – I'm just not emotionally ready yet.
Thank you sooo for the mention!! ❤ I'm so happy I found your blog. I have gotten many recommendations from you and I love talking to you as well.
It seems like you had an amazing year! I hope that 2017 will be amazing for you as well! 😀

    1. I guess that definitely proves how good it was, if you can see why I put it as my all-time favourite! 😀
Oh the Chaos Walking trilogy was amazing as well, I had high hopes and it blew all my expectations out the of water. I honestly can’t believe I waited until 2016 to pick it up.
The Song of Achilles will definitely break your heart, but it’s an wonderful book nonetheless so I hope you really love it Anna. 🙂
That’s all right, and it’s great to hear you’ve gotten some recommendations from me too; it’s part of the reason I started this blog in the first place. Also I really enjoy talking to you as well. 😀
Thanks, hopefully 2017 will turn out to be an amazing year for the both of us! 😀 ❤

      2. I have now added you. I will be creating a GR account for my blog very soon (I have it penciled (I write everything in pencil) in my blogging diary for next weekend). This one is just for me to rate books and keep track of what I’m reading. Kind of like yours I guess. 😀

  2. I think Schwab’s the best at non-romantic relationships. She’s the only author who’s written a YA book that I’ve read (okay… that don’t mean much since I barely dive into a bunch of them) where there’s no romance. I find that pretty nice and much needed! Great answers! This was one hell of a survey hahah! 😀

    1. Oh she definitely is. I read a lot more YA than any other genre and, while I love it when books do include a romance, I didn’t even notice it was missing in V.E. Schwab’s books. There was so much happening with the characters in general there was no need for one.
And yeah, massive survey but a lot of fun to fill out! 😀

  3. All the Bright Places was definitely a life-changing read for me, and ACOMAF is one of the best sequels I’ve ever read, if not the best!
I also have some good news for you: I’ve finished The Dream Thieves, and I’m officially a fan of the The Raven Cycle (even though I was disappointed in the first book)! So glad I decided to pull through with the series, and I can’t wait to see where Maggie Stiefvater goes with the next two books. I’ll be posting a full-length review soon. 🙂
Thanks so much for the mention, Beth; I’m so glad I got to meet you this year, too, and I’m looking forward to discussing books and keeping in touch with you next year as well!❤

    1. All the Bright Places actually had me in tears. It was hard to read but a brilliant book nonetheless. And yeah I thought ACOTAR would be hard to live up to but ACOMAF more than exceeded the first book.
Oh that is wonderful to hear, I’m definitely glad you decided to stick with this series, and now I can’t wait for you to get started on Blue Lily, Lily Blue and The Raven King (they’re both amazing!)
That’s all right. And here’s to 2017 and plenty more discussions like this! 😀 ❤

  4. Congratulations on all that you’ve achieved this year 🙂
Also, I love Newt so much too (don’t we all ^^), and for all the same reasons!
Speaking of which; I was especially excited for Fantastic Beasts because Newt is our first real Hufflepuff main character (sure, there was Cedric and Tonks and whatnot, but I feel that they didn’t have nearly as much of a presence as main characters from other houses, like the obvious Harry, Luna and Malfoy (even though Malfoy was initially portrayed as an antagonist)). As I’m a Hufflepuff myself (obviously), that was really great to see ^_^

    1. Thanks so much Addilyn, I was certainly pleased with how this year went, both reading and blogging wise.
Oh Newt is my new favourite character in the Harry Potter world.
Yes more love for Hufflepuff main characters. I don’t feel it was a house that was a main part in the original films. Yeah we had Cedric and Tonk but they were secondary characters and even then not secondary characters like Luna or Neville even. More Hufflepuff pride needed! 😀

  5. What a productive year! It’s great to see it was filled with so many wonderful books.

Yeah, it seems to be typical for reviews to receive less attention than memes and stuff; that’s the case for me, and I’ve seen a bunch of other people say the same. It can be so frustrating, especially when you’re very proud of a review and you want people to notice! Oh, well.

Happy new year, and I hope 2017 brings you even more lovely books!

    1. Oh yes, it was almost a struggle to come up with only one, and in some cases two, favourites for each question! 😀
Definitely a shame, but I’ve always thought as long as I get a handful of people view each of my reviews then that’s all that matters you know? As long as some people are reading them it’s worth writing them.
Happy new year to you too Liam, and I hope 2017 is an amazing year for you as well! 😀

    1. Overall I was definitely pleased with my reading year throughout 2016, and I had so many books to choose from for my favourites as well! 😀 Oh both The Star-Touched Queen and The Song of Achilles are beyond amazing. I hope you enjoy them Lilly.
That’s great to hear, I feel the same about your blog and all the conversations we’ve had through the comments as well! 🙂 ❤️

      1. That’s awesome! I didn’t do a favorites post this year but I know I will be doing one next year. My end of year was hectic and save for some scheduled posts I haven’t really been able to get on WP. I suspect 2017 will be a year of impactful reads for me since I’m going to step up in diverse/own voices reads. Last year I read a ton of popular books that I don’t regret reading because I enjoyed them thoroughly but it’s also helped me figuring out what my likes/dislikes are. Def reading Star Touched Queen & The Song Of Achilles this year. Here’s to more convos in 2017 😃💕

      2. It’s hard to come up with favourites when all the books you’ve read so far this year were equally amazing, at least that’s how I felt about the vast majority of them! I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your favourites post for 2017 then. 🙂
I’m going to try and read more diversely this year, I already have a few books on my to-read list that count so I want to get around to those as soon as possible. I can’t wait to see what you think of both The Star-Touched Queen and The Song of Achilles, we’ll have to have convos about those two books at least! 😀 ❤

      3. I absolutely agree, I know I read a lot of books I loved this year but that’s possibly cuz I read a ton of Fantasy Lol. This year I am choosing both the books I purchase & request an arc for much more carefully. I only want to get books I’m really interested in & know I’ll have an urgency to read if that makes any sense lol. Diverse/Own Voices will be a major part of my focus this year. Can’t wait to discuss Achilles & Star Touched with you Beth 😊💕

      4. I read a lot of fantasy but I’ve been branching out into contemporary and I have some new favourite authors in that genre as well now! I’ve always tried to be careful about what books I pick up. It’s part of why I feel I rate books so highly, for the most part I only pick up books I know I’ll enjoy you know? 🙂

      5. Yea I think last year I was really trying to branch out & I did but not everything did I like lol. Now I’ve noticed that I ask myself a few questions before buying or requesting. I’ve read some good Contemporaries but for the most part I’m a lover of Fantasy, sci-fi and Fiction.

  9. Thanks a million for the shoutout, Beth! I’m so happy that I’ve gotten the chance to “meet” you ❤

I loved all your choices, even though I haven't had the chance to read some of them! I definitely agree that Gemina was one of the most thrilling books I read this year, besides its predecessor and Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom of course! Speaking of Crooked Kingdom, a thousand times YAS to Jesper and Wylan! Best OTP EVER! By far my favorite couple of 2016. I love Kaz and Inej, and Rhys and Feyre, but Jesper and Wylan are just so ADORABLE. I really need to pick up When the Moon Was Ours. I love the cover and I've heard nothing but good things about it! I've seen My Lady Jane all over the blogosphere, too, so I might need to bump that one up on my list. I can go for a fun read 😀 I also need to try a book by Patrick Ness. I've seen his books all over the place. And I think I'm going to order Song of Achilles next. I heard it's really sad but worth the read.

    Awesome post, Beth! ❤

    1. That’s all right Azia, I’m glad I got a chance to meet you as well! 😀 ❤️
Thanks, it was tough to choose for some of these questions, there were so many books I could have picked from. Gemina was amazing but yeah Crooked Kingdom just beat it out for my favourite of the year overall. 😀 I almost feel like I should have done a list for the OTP question because all the Six of Crows couples would have been on it, and yes definitely Feyre and Rhys too.
I’d highly recommend When the Moon Was Ours. It’s definitely an amazing book, and I hope you enjoy My Lady Jane when you get around to that one as well! 🙂
Patrick Ness is such an amazing author, and oh The Song of Achilles will have you in tears but it’s definitely a worthwhile read! 🙂
      Thanks again Azia! ❤️

      1. *Virtual hug* And yeah, that OTP question is actually pretty hard. We had so many great ships last year, the majority of them from the Six of Crows duology LOL. And thanks so much ❤ I'll definitely add those books on my TBR! Happy reading, Beth! ❤

      2. Thanks! 😀
I wanted to try and pick one but there were so many I could have picked. In the end Wylan and Jesper just won out.
That’s great to hear, I really hope you enjoy them Azia, and happy reading to you too! 😀 ❤

  10. Thanks so much for the shoutout, Beth! I’m glad I ended up meeting you on here and that we’ve had so many great conversations. 💕
You read so many books! Some I’ve read and loved and some I’ve yet to get to yet, hopefully this year. Aside from the SOM books I really need to pick up When The Moon Was Ours. Every time I see something about how lyrical and beautiful the writing was I want to pick it up even more. I love how we were both initially recommended P.S. I Like You by Jill and then after her review I saw yours and was sold on the book even more. It’s definitely one I’ll end up rereading as well. And Jesper and Wylan!! They were my other OTP along with Inej and Kaz. I wish I would have just done a list. 😂
I hope you achieve all of your goals in 2017 and that you have a wonderful year. 😊♥

Thanks so much, yeah overall I had a lot of favourites to choose from this year, then again I probably feel like that every year. I am so excited for you to get started on the SoM books, and I’d highly recommend When the Moon Was Ours as well, it was such an amazing book.
The power of WordPress reviews right? I’m so glad I picked up P.S. I Like You, it’s going to be a favourite of mine for a long time I think! 😀
If I’d done a list all the Six of Crows couples would have been on it! Honestly they were my favourite group of characters overall as well.
Thanks so much Melissa, I hope you manage to get everything you want out of 2017 too! 😀 ❤️

      1. Awww, you’re one of the best people I’ve met through WordPress so far too and I always look forward to our conversations too. 💕
I would imagine so. Especially since you get through so many books. I’m hoping I get through quite a few myself this year. Although, I put my reading goal low so that if I don’t it won’t be so bad lol.
I’m really excited to read them! I’ve been having to force myself not to start ADSOM. I want to so bad but I know if I do then I’ll end up not getting through my review books on time.
Yes! If it wasn’t for book reviews I probably would have never come across or read certain books. Especially because I wasn’t interested in reading P.S. I Like You until I read reviews. I thought it would end up being a love square (back when I had only read the synopsis) but it so wasn’t and I’m glad I gave it a chance.
        You’re welcome, Beth!! ♥😊

      2. Thanks so much Melissa, it means a lot to me that you think that! 😀 ❤
I always try and go over my reading goal but I start lower than I know I can do just so I don't have a lot of pressure at the start of the year. I'll probably change my GR goal towards June depending on how far ahead or behind I am
I know it's important for you to read your review books but there is a part of me that is wondering why you are forcing yourself not to start ADSOM when you could start it right this second? But maybe after your review books or something in that case! 😀
There are actually quite a few books I wouldn't have come across; The Bone Season is actually one of them. I saw a review for the first book on WordPress, thought it sounded interesting, added it to my to-read list, and the rest is history so to speak! Oh I'm definitely glad P.S. I Like You wasn't a love square!

      3. I’m going to try to go over mine this year. I’ve only ever went over it once at that was two years ago when I somehow managed 126 books. Maybe just maybe I can make it close to 100 again. 😊
I know, I know. The main thing is I know once I start ADSOM the review books will go out the window and I’ll feel bad because I have four reviews that have to be up this month, one is late. And then I have two for next month. I’m banning myself from NetGalley for a while after this for sure. 😂😂
Yay for WordPress introducing you to TBS! I know I wouldn’t have decided to pick up ACOTAR if it weren’t for WordPress. I had heard about it but it was a review that got me interested in reading it.
I know right? That would have been terrible haha.

      4. Well then maybe this year will be the second year you manage to go over your goal. It’s always nice to see the number go up after you’ve reached your target you know? Ahh, in that case yeah maybe get through your review books first. I had to ban myself from NetGalley a little while back but pretty soon I’ll let myself start requesting again.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy ADSOM as much as I enjoyed TBS and it will be a successful book WordPress introduced you to. 😀

    1. I know that feeling, I always have to bump certain books off my monthly TBR list, but hopefully I’ll have time for some of them this year! Hopefully it will be the same for you.
I actually use an app on my iPad called Word Swag, it has backgrounds and different fonts and I use it for a lot of my banners/graphics so I’d recommend checking it out if you’re interested. 🙂

  11. What a wonderful list of books here, and you are reminding me that I need to read Every Heart a Doorway sometime soon, that book sounds so good! Also, I love the quote you picked out, it’s making me want to read the book so, so badly. And you should be proud, you are such a successful and incredible blogger, I am incredibly proud of you and I think we all aspire to be just like you, haha (really, I know I do). Wishing you all the beest for this reading year 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie. Oh I’d definitely recommend picking up Every Heart a Doorway as soon as you get a chance. It’s such an amazing book and one I would encourage everyone to read! 😀 Same goes with The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet as well, if you liked the quote I picked you’re bound to love the book just as much.
Thanks so so much Marie, honestly it means so much to me that you think that because that’s what I think about your blog as well. You are one of my favourite people I follow on WordPress and I am so so glad we started talking on here as well. I always look forwards to seeing posts and comments from you and I love you SFATW feature as well! 😀
Thanks again, and wishing you all the best for 2017 as well! 😀 ❤

  12. That quote from The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet 100% just convinced me to pick up that book. I’m not sure why I haven’t yet – that cover is beautiful and it feels like I’ve only read great things about it. I hope I get to it sometime this year… I have tons of books I want to read and I also want to invest some time into my other hobbies, so I guess we’ll see. 😛

Also thank you so much for the shoutout! I’m really honoured and I’m honestly glad to have found you in the community. Know that my blogging experience is made much better with you in it and I hope 2017 will be filled with more discussions and book chats and what-not. Have a great year ahead, Beth! 💞

    1. Oh if you love that quote then I have a feeling you’ll love the book just as much Reg. There are plenty of amazing quotes like that throughout and the character’s in the story are so incredibly well-written. I am definitely someone who sings the praises of that book and I do hope you enjoy it, I’ll be looking out for a review from you either way! 😀
One of my new year’s resolutions was actually to bake more again so I get what you mean about investing in other hobbies besides blogging! 🙂
That’s all right, ❤ I honestly don't think my blogging journey would have been the same if I hadn't started following/talking with you on WordPress. I always look forwards to seeing your posts and comments and reading what you have to say on books in general as well. 🙂
Yep, here's hoping 2017 is an amazing year for the both of us! 😀

  13. Such a great list of books here, Beth. Gemina, The Raven Cycle, Shades of Magic, Six of Crows and Every Heart A Doorway are some of my favourites that I read this year. I’m also really happy to see A Fierce & Subtle Poison on here!! And thank you for the shout out. I absolutely adore you and your blog so much ♥♥ Congrats again on reaching your 1 year blogiversary! Can’t wait to see even more posts from you this year 😀

    1. Thanks so much Lauren, and yeah there were some truly amazing books released in 2016 weren’t there! I am in love with the Shades of Magic series, same with Gemina, Six of Crows, The Raven Cycle, and Every Heart a Doorway was such a brilliant read at all. Different to what I was expecting in a way but overall a wonderful story.
I thought A Fierce and Subtle Poison would be an appropriate book to pick, it seems to be one of those books not many people have read/picked up which is a shame because it’s a good story.
That’s all right, ❤ I can't really remember when I started following you but there are some bloggers who are a major part of my journey on WordPress and whose posts I always look forwards to seeing and you are definitely one of them! ❤ 😀
Here's hoping 2017 brings some great things for both of us! 😀

    1. Wolf by Wolf is amazing, I’d highly recommend that duology because it’s definitely one of my all time favourites now! The Song of Achilles was amazing, though heartbreaking wasn’t it? And both A Fierce and Subtle Poison and Every Heart a Doorway are books I’d highly recommend too so I hope you do pick them up and enjoy them as much as I did! 😀

    1. I hope you enjoy any books from this list you add to your TBR list in that case! 😀 And yes I’ve seen the new covers for The Bone Season series, I dunno I have the first two books in the original covers so I’m not impressed with how they’ve changed the design halfway through the series. They’re good overall but it’s gonna make the series look weird on my bookshelves. What do you think of them?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I agree! There are interesting but I wish they had waited until the entire series was complete before changing them; however I did hear that the covers that match the current series will still be available but will be sold as “collector’s editions” so that’s probably what I’ll buy.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Same here, but they never seem to do that with books do they. Ohh I hadn’t heard that about the collectors editions. I knew that’s how the third book was being released but I wasn’t sure if that applied to the rest of the series as well. 🙂

You have some books on here I haven’t heard of before, so I’ll try to check some of them out in 2017. I’ve been wanting to read The Chaos Walking series for some time.

Some of these books have become favourites of mine that I’ve read across loads of year, not just 2016, so I hope you enjoy any you pick up. The Chaos Walking series in particular is amazing! 😀
