Bone Gap by Laura Ruby
Everyone knows Bone Gap is full of gaps.
So when young, beautiful Roza went missing, the people of Bone Gap weren’t surprised. But Finn knows what really happened to Roza. He knows she was kidnapped by a dangerous man whose face he cannot remember.
As we follow the stories of Finn, Roza, and the people of Bone Gap, acclaimed author Laura Ruby weaves a tale of the ways in which the face the world sees is never the sum of who we are.
It was only recently that I discovered magical realism was a genre I loved, and that discovery was all because of Bone Gap. I saw one rave review for this book and knew I had to add it to my to-read list; then when I read it for myself I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the magic. Bone Gap has fairytale elements which I loved but it shows us a darker side to them. Imagine if Beauty had already been in love when she was taken by the Beast, and hadn’t been content to stay with him in his castle. Bone Gap is full of such amazing characters you can’t help but root for and fall in love with.
“Because we don’t have your typical gaps around here. Not gaps made of rocks or mountains. We have gaps in the world. In the space of things. So many places to lose yourself, if you believe that they’re there. You can slip into the gap and never find your way out. Or maybe you don’t want to find your way out.”
You can check out my review for Bone Gap here.
What did you think of Bone Gap? Have you read it yet or is it still on your to-read list? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you took part in this week’s Standalone Sunday as well.
Also to celebrate reaching my one year blogiversary I am hosting a giveaway and Q&A. The chance to enter and ask me any questions ends in less than a week, on the 1st of December at midnight GMT. For more information you can check out my original post here.

Definitely pick it up if you have a chance Stephanie! It’s such a brilliant read and a great magical realism book too, not too confusing like Vassa in the Night was! 😀

I haven’t read many magical realism books so I think I’ll add this one to my TBR! I think the last magical realism story I read was A Very Old Man With the Enormous Wings! I think it’s time to expand my reading horizons and this sounds like a really interesting book. The concept is so unique. Thanks for the rec! 😀

If you haven’t read many magical realism books yet then this is definitely the one I would recommend you read. It was the first one I read and it got me hooked on the genre.
Ohh, I may have to check that one out. Magical realism is still a new genre for me so I’m always looking for more books to read from it!
That’s all right, I hope you enjoy this one. 😀

I’ll definitely have to give it a go then! And yes, I highly recommend the Very Old Man. It’s pretty short and it’s the only reason I remember the uniqueness of magical realism 😀 And thank you!

In that case I’ll have to add it to my to-read list! 😀
That’s all right.

I remember reading your review for this and automatically adding it to my TBR. I love the whole idea of the gaps and falling into one. It makes me think of Narnia and the wardrobe in a way but a more unpredictable one. I definitely need to move this one up my list and get to it next year. Great pick, Beth! 😊

Ohh, that’s good to know! 😀 It’s a brilliant book and hopefully one you’ll really enjoy as well Melissa.
I never thought about it like that before, for me reading this book it was more a dark fairytale/Greek mythology inspired you know?
Definitely do, I’m already excited to hear what you think of this one.
Thanks Melissa! 😀

I hope so too!
Now that you mention it I can definitely see fairytale/Greek mythology elements just from reading the synopsis. Honestly, I think anything that’s about going into something and potentially ending up in a different place will always automatically make me think of Narnia 😂🙈.
You’re welcome, Beth! 😊

I guess if Narnia was the first book like that you read anything else would remind you of it. I guess for me I saw in another review before picking this book up the words fairytale/Greek mythology elements and that just stuck with me and I guess I couldn’t see anything else. 🙂

I actually avoided this book because it has a bee on the cover. Lol I honestly had no idea what this book is about until now.

Honestly if I hadn’t seen the review I did I don’t think I would have picked this book up because of the same reason, but it’s well worth a read Jill. The blurb doesn’t really give much away but it’s a brilliant story! 🙂

Oh gosh, I really want to read this book. Not only is the cover brilliant, but I haven’t really had any experience with magical realism. So I really want to get that sorted out! + save the bees.

Such a great book. I read it earlier this month and wrote a sticky note review on it. A friend of mine tried to get me to read it over the summer and it took me until November to get to it. I can’t believe it took me so long!

Bone Gap is such an amazing book, and hey even though it took you a while at least you got around to it eventually, ( I have books like that as well).
Also I love the idea of sticky note reviews, and I love yours for this book as well! 😀

I had absolutely no idea this was a Magical Realism read even though I’ve heard it reviewed a few times on Booktube. This only intrigues me more than when I originally heard of Bone Gap, thank you for featuring it on your blog…kicking myself for not buying it when I saw it on BookOutlet 😔

Honestly when I started reading this book I had no idea magical realism was a thing that existed. It was only when I finished this book that I kind of became addicted to the genre and searched out other books like it. Bone Gap remains my favourite though.
That’s all right! 🙂 It’s an amazing book so I hope you do pick it up and love it as much as I did! 😀
