The Harry Potter Book Tag

I love Harry Potter, honestly though is there anyone out there who doesn’t, so when I first saw this tag I was desperate to take part in it. Luckily I was soon tagged by, not only Jess at The Mud and Stars Book Blog, but by Heather at The Sassy Book Geek as well. Thank you both for giving me the opportunity to take part in this tag, everyone else should definitely check out their original posts and while you’re there their blogs as well.

The Harry Potter Book Tag was originally created by Lashaan and Trang at Bookidode, who are also to credit for the amazing title images for each of the questions. There is only one rule; you cannot use any of the Harry Potter books to answer the questions.

A book in which you found the theme interesting, but you’d like to rewrite it.

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

The blurb made this book sound like a story I’d love; an epic duel between two magicians that only one can survive set in a fantasy version of Russia. However instead of a battle to the death the two magicians, Vika and Nikolai, spent more time re-decorating Russia, and when they did come face to face their attempts to take the other out were half hearted at best.

Plus with insta-love and a love triangle taking up quite a few of the pages I ended up being really disappointed in The Crown’s Game. The premise  of this book was amazing, the reality wasn’t.

The first book in a series that got you hooked.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Even before picking this book up I’d heard pretty much nothing but amazing things about it and the rest of the series. My expectations were high and rising higher with every other Patrick Ness book I’d read and loved, but nothing could fully prepare me for how amazing this series was.

As soon as I finished The Knife of Never Letting Go I jumped right into The Ask and the Answer, and once I finished the second book I started the third immediately. I binge read all three books and I’m definitely glad I waited until the whole trilogy had been released before starting this one.

A book you wish you could have right now.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

I fell in love with everything about Laini Taylor’s first series, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so when I saw she had a new duology being released it went to the top of my to-read list. The cover is gorgeous and the blurb sounds amazing; besides as it’s been written by Laini Taylor that’s pretty much all I need to know to know I’m going to love the story and the writing.

Even the push back in the release date to next year only made me more desperate to get my hands on this book.

Strange the Dreamer

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

A killer book. Both senses. Take it as you like.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

A book about a trainee assassin attending a school described as ‘Hogwarts for killers’ with other would-be murderers means there is a lot of death in this book. Every lesson Mia and the other characters we are introduced to have is on how to cause death; be it through weaponry or poison. Not even the students are safe in the halls of the Red Church.

Plus added to the subject and Mia’s characterisation there also the length of Nevernight which is kind of killer in and of itself.

Nevernight

hp-confundo

A book that you found really confusing.

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

I’ve found a few of the magical realism books I’ve read confusing, I think that’s part of the nature of the genre, but none more so than Vassa in the Night. There were a lot of elements to this book I really loved; the setting of BY’s store and the tasks Vassa had to complete each night, Erg her talking wooden doll, and the motorcyclist we never discover much about.

But on the other hand there’s more I found a little too confusing to fully understand; mainly what happened in the last few chapters.

Vassa in the Night

hp-expecto-patronum

Your spirit animal book.

Cress by Marissa Meyer

When I took part in the Myself in Five Characters Tag a while back Cress was one of the characters I picked. There was something about her that, more than any of the other characters in The Lunar Chronicles books, that I connected with.

Like Cress I often live in my own imagination rather than the real world, and I loved her way of looking at the world as well. Even crash landed in the middle of the desert with no way to call for help and seemingly no hope she still looks at the everything new on earth she comes across with wonder.

Cress

hp-sectumsempra

A dark, twisted book.

Alice by Christina Henry

This is not a book for the faint hearted. Even before I started Alice I knew it would be a much darker take on my favourite children’s book, but I was still a little surprised by how dark it ended up being.

The streets of Old Town that Alice and Hatter have to travel through are nothing like the Wonderland Lewis Carroll envisioned. Divided up and ruled by men – the Rabbit, the Walrus and Mr. Carpenter, the Caterpillar, and Cheshire – who fight each other for more power being a woman is dangerous when you could be taken away at any moment and enslaved or worse.

Alice

hp-aparecium

A book that surprised you in a great way.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

After seeing plenty of mixed reviews, most of which saying that the first book wasn’t that great, I had really low expectations for Throne of Glass. In fact my expectations were so low I ended up being pleasantly surprised when I read and enjoyed this book. Granted it had its problems, and there were parts I didn’t enjoy, but overall it was an enjoyable read and I eagerly picked up the second book, and then the third, and then the fourth.

Now I’ve finished the fifth book and this is, hands down, one of my favourite series. I can’t wait for the release of the sixth book but I already know I’m going to love it.

      1. Well, I can handle some dark stuff…hopefully. As long as after I read something with fluffy bunnies in it.
And with regards to the tags I’ve accumulated…I am so excited for finals to be over and I’m going on a Tag marathon! I’ll prob post date some of them so it’s not overwhelming but it’s one of my other New Year’s Resolutions: cut down my Tags list and my TBR list! Gonna get shit accomplished! Whoo Hoo! 😉

      2. I think that’s what I did after I read it, went straight onto a YA contemporary book where I knew there’d be some kind of happy ending! 🙂
That should be one of my New Year’s Resolutions as well. I’m about six months behind on tags now so I really need to start cutting down the ones in my queue!

  1. Great answers Beth! I can’t wait to get my hands on Strange the Dreamer – that cover is gorgeous, and I looove Laini Taylor’s writing style. Shame to hear that Vassa in the Night was so confusing, I’ve had my eye on that one for a while, as it sounds so intriguing. I love magical realism, although it irritates me when things become so surreal they are actually confusing and nonsensical! Was Alice good?? I do enjoy dark books, but I get the impression that this one is pretty gruesome, which I’m not always good at dealing with.

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah Strange the Dreamer sounds amazing, and I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for Laini Taylor I release a new book so I’m so excited to get my hands on this one.
It was still a good book just a little too confusing in places, and that made it hard to follow at times. I think Vassa was at the extreme end of magical realism and just turned out a little too surreal.
Alice was good but yeah quite gruesome. I’d recommend it I you think you can handle it but if not maybe give it a miss. 🙂

  2. Thanks for taking the tag Beth I think it’s a fun one! Definitely agree with your first answer, the Crowns Game is something that has good potential but I wish had been done differently too.
Also I need Strange the Dreamer Stat! I can’t wait for a new Laine Taylor book!
I think it’s safe to say I love all of your choices here, there’s some great books! 🙂

    1. That’s all right. It’s definitely a fun tag, and well I love Harry Potter so that just made it even better! Yeah there are so many things I would have loved to see in that book, I have hope that the second one will be better but who knows really.
God that is one of my most anticipated releases for next year. I’m sure it’s going to be beyond amazing!
      Thanks so much Heather! 😀

  3. I’ve heard the same thing time and time again about The Crown’s Game. I remember all the hype pre-release about the book and then when the reviews started rolling in there were so many negative ones. I’m glad I steered well clear of it because I know if you didn’t like and there’s a love triangle then I most likely won’t either. Also, Nevernight, Throne of Glass, and The Knife of Never Letting Go – I need to get around to those soon. I was hoping before the end of the year but it’s looking like that won’t happen because of review books 🙈. And I love that cover for Strange The Dreamer! I’m thinking I’ll definitely have to order the UK version. I’m really excited for it too after having loved Laini’s other series. Her writing is so gorgeous 😍! Great answers, Beth. I loved reading them. 😊

    1. I didn’t see many of the pre-release reviews, or even really get swept up with the pre-release hype, but I think reading the blurb I hyped myself up a little because it sounded so amazing. Unfortunately yeah the book itself didn’t live up to it’s promise. And no, this was not one of the good love triangles we talked about previously!
Oh all three of those are amazing books, The Knife of Never Letting Go is probably my favourite but Throne of Glass and Nevernight are a close second and third. I know the feeling because there are so many books I wanted to get around to before the end of the year but probably won’t now.
The more I’ve seen it the more the UK one is growing on me (before I couldn’t decide between this one and the US one) I can’t wait for it to be released! Her writing is definitely amazing so I have high hopes for Strange the Dreamer.
      Thanks Melissa. 😀

      1. It always sucks when a book ends up not living up to what you were expecting. Especially given that the synopsis for The Crown’s Game does sound really good and like the book had a lot of potential.
It’s crazy because I swear just yesterday it was only August and I was all “I’m going to read all of these before the end of the year!” thinking I had a ton of time. It’s nearly December and I’ve been in a funk the past few months so lol. Although I’m reading Crooked Kingdom at the moment and really enjoying it school kind of took over this past week and then I started watching Outlander which is why I still haven’t finished it 🙈.
I think they’re both gorgeous covers. I have high hopes for it too!
        You’re welcome, Beth. 😊

      2. I expected an epic battle to the death with insanely powerful magic and honestly I can’t say it was even half of that you know? I’ll still be reading the second book but it’s not anywhere near the top of my to-read list!
Oh I know, we only have one more day left after today and then it’s December. It doesn’t feel real yet for me!
Crooked Kingdom is beyond amazing, I can’t wait for you to finish it so I can talk to you about what happens! I haven’t started Outlander, the book or the TV show, is it any good?
        Same here, sky high! 😀

      3. I get what you mean! Sounds like the synopsis was more misleading than anything. I’ve noticed a lot of that going around lately.
        Me either!
I’m nearly halfway through it now so I’m getting there. Hopefully I have it finished sometime next week or maybe even this weekend. I can’t wait to talk with you about it 😃! Since I’ve already read this part, you know that whole scene where Inej is still with Van Eck and he almost breaks her legs? I actually screamed at the book 🙈. That part was so intense.
I haven’t read the books, yet, but the show is so good! It’s apparently pretty spot on with the books too. Since I know you like history too I think you’ll love it. I binged both seasons in less than a week and now I just want the third season already.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I seem to be hearing it a lot as well. So far the only one I’ve read with a misleading synopsis was The Crown’s Game but I know a lot of people feel that way about Three Dark Crowns as well.
Ohh, it must be getting exciting now right? Well, more exciting than it has been so far. I know what you mean about that scene with Inej and Van Eck. I thought Kaz would burst in any minute to save her because I couldn’t imagine Leigh Bardugo actually going there you know.
I love history, so based on your recommendation I will probably pick up the books at some point (I always like to read the book before seeing the film/TV adaptation)

        Liked by 1 person

      5. I’ve heard the same about Three Dark Crowns, which I haven’t read yet but plan to. The one book I read with a misleading synopsis this year was The Movie Version.
Yep it’s getting more exciting! I’m on chapter 17 at the moment. It’s been slow going but I blame that more on my focus being on other things than the book. Either way, I’m loving it so far and can’t wait to see how Leigh wraps everything up.
I know right!? I thought he would too but when he didn’t and Inej said what she said I was relieved and all 😭 at the same time. I couldn’t imagine her going there either.
I’m terrible at reading the book first when it comes to tv adaptions. Aside from Shadowhunters I’m pretty sure I always end up watching the show first. 🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I still have it on my to-read list, and I do want to get around to it, but I have no idea when. Oh I remember your review for The Movie Version, I don’t think that’s one I’ll be picking up anytime soon either.
That’s a shame but trust me when you start getting to the main part of the story, and definitely the ending as well, it picks up and you will be unable to put it down. You won’t be disappointed with this book at all!
After everything that happened in Six of Crows I had a lot of faith in Kaz and he didn’t let me down. I love Inej though, and just the way she handled Van Eck and all she went through at his hands.
I normally don’t let myself watch the show before reading the book. There are a few exceptions though; The Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts, Shadowhunters. I saw the play/film/TV show before picking up the books! 😀

      7. I don’t know when I will either. Yeah, it was probably my worst read of this year so I definitely don’t recommend it haha.
That’s good to hear! I know for sure I’ll cry at some point while reading because I keep hearing that people have.
I did too and so far he hasn’t let me down although there have been times where I wanted to shake some sense into him 🙈. Kaz is so smart about a lot of things and then other things I’m just like why Kaz lol. I love Inej too. I think out of everyone she’s my favorite. I finished 17 last night and hearing more of her backstory was incredible. Everything she’s been through and she hasn’t lost her hope or who she is. I applaud her for that.
I usually always try to when it comes to movies, Fantastic Beasts is an exception for me too though. But with shows I almost always never know its a book until after I’ve watched the show. 😂

      8. I have a couple of book competing for my worst read of this year, I don’t really want to add another to that list!
I cried, I never cry at books but I cried at this one just because of what happened and the way it was revealed as well.
Yeah Kaz is a bit of an enigma but I think his pure intelligence makes up for the moments when he demonstrates and complete lack of sense. Inje is definitely one of my favourite characters in this book, honestly I looked forwards to every single chapter she was in, even if it wasn’t one in her POV. 😀
I think with Fantastic Beasts it was better to have seen the film before reading the book, that may be an exception for everyone! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      9. Definitely not. Plus, with the end of the year near it’s better to spend time on books we enjoy. 😊
Ahhhh! I’m kind of scared now. I have about 30% left of the book to read if not less.
That’s true. Kaz is probably the most unique character I’ve ever come across in a book and one I’ll never forget. I definitely look forward to chapters with Inej as well. I have to admit chapter 26 is possibly my favorite so far and I was freaking out the whole time I read it 😂🙈. I’m so close to finishing the book.

  4. The premise of The Crown’s Game reminds me of Three Dark Crowns. A Promise of a deadly fight for the throne, and … it stays a promise. Also, insta-love? Why, oh why???
Haha, I hadn’t seen Throne of Glass used for a while. It still took me 4 books to really like it, now I care about most of the characters (I still can’t talk about Lady Celaena without a wince :p)

    1. I think, and this is purely based on reviews I’ve read, for the most part the end of Three Dark Crowns kind of delivers the start of that promise. Nothing like that in The Crown’s Game, and yeah you could have taken out all the romance aspects of this book and I think it would have improved the story a little in my mind It seems like a lot of the time that could have been given to develop the plot went into delivering an insta-love/love triangle romance.
I don’t think I’ve used it for a while, but in this case it’s definitely a book that fit the question. I started getting into the series with the second book, but wow it’s great you kept going with the series until book four when you started to like it. I’m not sure if I would have given up long before that had I been in the same situation! 😀

  5. Great answers, Beth, and I agree with you re: The Crown’s Game! Definitely a book that I would want to be rewritten bc it’s just oozing with potential. And I’ve been meaning to pick up the Chaos Walking trilogy – hopefully I’ll get to it, er, early next year. The premise is super intriguing.

And I love that cover for Strange the Dreamer so much! I’ve only seen the blue/yellow cover until your post and I think I like this one better. 💕

    1. Thanks so much Reg! I feel there are probably a few books I’ve come across like that, where I think the premise is amazing but the actual book failed to live up to my expectations, but The Crown’s Game is one of the more recent ones I’ve read, and one of the ones I definitely thought the most about in terms of how it could be re-written you know?
The Chaos Walking trilogy is amazing! I binge read all three books because they were completely addictive and I couldn’t stop myself. I hope you enjoy them, they really are brilliant.
The cover I posted for Strange the Dreamer is the UK edition, and the one I’ve pre-ordered as well. I can’t decide which is my favourite but at the moment, and this is probably because it’s the one I’m getting, but I prefer the UK one as well! ❤

  6. This was so fun to read, thanks so much for the tag! I’d not heard of Alice before, but it sounds like an interesting twist on a classic. And I NEED Nevernight in my life ASAP. Or as soon as I get back from Japan 😛
I have a backlog of tags to get through but I’ve been drafting posts for them, so hopefully I’ll get to this in the next week! And if I don’t, come bug me about it!

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have a lot of fun with this tag then Kate. It’s definitely a great one to take part in.
Alice is definitely a very dark and creepy book but well worth a read if you can handle the more gruesome aspects of the story. Nevernight is an amazing book, I’m sure it will have been well worth the wait when you finally get your hands on it.
Don’t worry, I have a backlog of tags to get though as well and I haven’t been drafting posts for them so you’re in a much better place than I am at the moment! 🙂

      2. In that case I would definitely recommend Alice. Granted I’m not a massive horror fan so I may not be the best person to get recommendations from but this book definitely fits in that genre.
Also, depending how you class horror Nevernight could fit as well! 😀
I need to get inspired to draft as well, hopefully that’s something I can get started on this week/weekend.

      3. In that case I’ll try and check it out! The paperback looks so pretty that I might try and wait until I get back to the UK to pick up a copy, rather than get it on e-book. Honestly, with a synopsis that good, I’d read Nevernight no matter what genre it was. 😛 Yes, go for it, excited to read some new posts from you! Also are you on twitter by the way?

  7. Loved your answers, Beth! I totally agree with Patrick Ness’ ability to get us to increase our expectations after each book we read from him. Dude is a God. I have yet to read the sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go, but man would I jump into that book with my eyes closed once the opportunity arises! I also reaaaally want to give Alice a shot. It sounds dark enough to entertain me and please my retelling expectations! 😛

Each book by him that I’ve picked up has been so much better than the last and I have high high hopes for whatever he decides to write next. I think you’ll love The Ask and the Answer when you get it, and Monsters of Men, both are highly highly addictive and just brilliant stories.

I did it a while back and thought the questions were ace 👌🏻Alice is a book I really, really want to read at some point so I’m hoping I don’t find it too weird when I get around to it! I’m definitely glad that you ended up liking Throne of Glass – that would’ve been a real tragedy otherwise!

I’ve actually been really surprised by the mixed reviews for The Crown’s Game. There was so much hype around its release but I keep hearing “meh” about it. And omg I need to catch up with my Laini Taylor and Patrick Ness game!!

    1. Thanks so much Kirstie, yeah the questions were amazing and I loved the graphics that went with each one as well. Alice is an amazing book, and I don’t think it was necessarily really weird just really dark and gruesome in places, not a book for the faint hearted. Throne of Glass was a series I put off for ages but by the time I got around to it I was kicking myself for not picking it up sooner! 🙂
I was so excited for The Crown’s Game, just because the blurb made it sound amazing, then when I was the book I was very ‘meh’ about it as well. Both Laini Taylor and Patrick Ness are amazing, what books of theirs do you still have to read then?
