The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry

The Love That Split the World

Natalie’s last summer in her small Kentucky hometown is off to a magical start…until she starts seeing the “wrong things.” At first, they’re just momentary glimpses—her front door is red instead of its usual green, there’s a pre-school where the garden store should be. But then her whole town disappears for hours, fading away into rolling hills and grazing buffalo, and Nat knows something isn’t right.

That’s when she gets a visit from the kind but mysterious apparition she calls “Grandmother,” who tells her: “You have three months to save him.” The next night, under the stadium lights of the high school football field, she meets a beautiful boy named Beau, and it’s as if time just stops and nothing exists. Nothing, except Natalie and Beau.

I recently featured Emily Henry’s next book as my Waiting on Wednesday pick because I loved her writing and loved her first book so much. The Love That Split the World is one of the best YA books I’ve read this year so far, a mixture of contemporary and magical realism, and it’s had some tough competition. As I was reading I fell in love with Natalie and Beau’s story and their relationship, it was beautiful and moving but so heartbreaking at the same time. The writing was just wonderful and the whole story completely unforgettable. Even now months after I first picked it up I can’t wait to go back and re-read it soon.

“Grandmother taught me that eventually – whether with a thousand tiny fissures or one swift split – love will break your heart. My heart is breaking.”

  1. I’ve had this one on my TBR for so long yet this is probably the first time I’ve read the synopsis. Another cover add! Back when I was only on bookstagram I did so many covers adds to my TBR 😂. I really love the sound of this though. I didn’t know it had magical realism elements and even though I’ve not really dived into that genre yet I really want to. I’m definitely going to have to pick it up sometime within the next year. Great pick, Beth! 😊

    1. It was a cover pick up for me as well! I actually don’t think I did more than skim the blurb before I started reading it but wow it’s an amazing book; the story is just as good as the cover design! 😀
Magical realism is a favourite genre of mine, and this book is a favourite from that genre as well! Basically one of the best you could start with if you want to dive in.
Yay, I’m so glad you hear that and I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! 😀
      Thanks Melissa! ❤

      1. Gorgeous covers are so hard to resist, aren’t they? I feel like I do more cover buys/adds than anything lol. Unless I know the author and then I pick it because the author.
From all the reviews I’ve read for magical realism books I have a feeling it’ll end up being one of my favorites. I’ve heard that The Raven Cycle books are considered a part of that genre and I’ve actually read the first two and loved them so. 😊
        I hope I do too! You’re welcome, Beth. 💕

      2. I definitely do more cover buys than anything else. Sometimes I won’t even bother reading the blurb. I’ll just be like ‘ohh, what a gorgeous cover, I need this book on my shelves’ and then I’ll buy it! Oh author buys are probably my second most purchases. 😀
Oh I really do hope so, there are so many amazing ones out there and if you need any recommendations I can give you a few of my favourites (granted it’s not too many given how little I’ve explored the genre myself). The Raven Cycle series is one of my favourites so I hope you love the last two books as well! ❤️

      3. I do that sometimes too 😂! I remember when I first joined the online book community I would always read based on how much I saw a book cover floating around. It worked out though considering I discovered Shatter Me, Mara Dyer, and The Darkest Minds that way.
I’ll let you know! I know you’ve recommended me this one, When The Moon Was Ours, and The Weight of Feathers so I’m definitely going to start there.
        I hope I do too! 😊

      4. I’ve discovered some great books based on cover buys too, and although I haven’t read Mara Dyer yet I loved Shatter Me and The Darkest Minds.
Well in that case I can’t wait to see what you think of them all. All three are amazing books so I’m sure you’ll love them. 😀

    1. Yeah there are a few mixed reviews out there for this one but honestly it’s one of my favourites so I’d pretty much recommend it to anyone and everyone. 😀
I hope you manage to get around to it soon, and I hope you really love it as well! Also I know what you mean, how is it that 2017 is less than two months away now! 🙂

  2. Before this book was published, I really wanted to read it… then it’s like I forgot about it or something. Plus I’ve been so busy. But I just LOVE that cover. And I’m from Kentucky! I had no idea this book was set in Kentucky so that makes me wanna read it even more! Thanks for the rec!

    1. See I was pretty much the opposite. This book wasn’t really on my radar before it was published but once it was released I picked it up and just fell in love. It’s really worth picking up, and not just because of the gorgeous cover! 😀
That’s all right, I really hope you love this book as much as I did, it’s a beautiful story and it deserves a lot more recognition.
