Fall Activities Book Tag

Don’t worry, I am working my way through my queue of tags and awards I still need to complete. However, as this is a Fall activities book tag it made sense to post it now rather than in Spring/Summer after I’ve gotten through all the tags before it in my queue. I’ve been seeing this one around WordPress a fair bit at the moment, so obviously I was thrilled to be able to take part.

Although it does seem to me this is more of an American tag than English one. I’ve never been apple picking or to a corn maze, and we’re not big over here on carving pumpkins. Still it was great fun to be able to take part in this. I was tagged by Lauren at Lauren’s Page Turners. Thank you so much for the tag Lauren; everyone else should definitely check out her original post and while you’re there her blog as well.

Apple Picking:
A book on your TBR that looks so great, you can’t wait to get into it.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Ever since I heard about this book it has been at the top of all my lists; my to-read list, my most-anticipated list, etc. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Caraval from NetGalley and I cannot wait to jump into it. The pre-release reviews have all been amazing and there is so much hype surrounding it as well so I have very high hopes, but I am more than sure Caraval will exceed them.

caraval

Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems.

Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.

Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.

When the sisters’ long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show’s mastermind organiser, Legend.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

Corn Maze:
A book to get lost in.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

This was another book that was at the top of all my lists before it was released, and once I read it it ended up at the top of my list of favourite books as well. The Star-Touched Queen is a beautiful story, lyrically written with a magical world you can help but want to know more about, and once you start reading it it becomes so easy to get lost in the pages of this book.

The Star-Touched Queen

Haunted Houses:
A book that scared you.

Slasher Girls and Monster Boys by April Genevieve Tucholke

I don’t read many horror stories, mainly because I am a massive wimp when it comes to anything remotely scary, but Slasher Girls and Monster Boys was an anthology that, after seeing an amazing review, I knew I just had to pick up. So many of my favourite authors wrote stories for this book – Kendare Blake, Jay Kristoff, Laugh Bardugo, A.G. Howard – and it turned out to be an un-put-down-able read for me, though still very scary in places.

Pumpkin Patch:
The latest book you picked up/purchased.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova

I ordered this book from Amazon after seeing so many amazing reviews for it. I knew I had to get a copy and see what all the fuss was about. It took a week and a half to be dispatched and delivered to me but Labyrinth Lost was well worth the wait. Everything everyone loved about this book I did as well, and every bit of praise Labyrinth Lost and Zoraida Córdova have received is well deserved.

Scenic Drive:
A book that is lyrically beautiful.

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

When it comes to magical realism books I’ve yet to read one which hasn’t been beautifully and lyrically written. When the Moon Was Ours was no exception and it is tied for first as my favourite book from the genre. The story was amazing, the characters diverse and wonderfully developed, and the writing made it seem like magic was real; something that could be found hiding around every corner.

When the Moon Was Ours

“Moon had become his name to this town because of her. Because of her, this town had christened him. Without her, he had been nameless. He had not been Samir or Sam. He had been no one. They knew his name no more than they knew who this girl had been before she was water.”

Pumpkin Carving:
A book you didn’t like and wouldn’t mind cutting up.

Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan

My hopes for this book were high. It was a fairytale retelling, which normally I love, of Rapunzel, a story which doesn’t seem to be retold much at all. However when I got around to reading this book I was so disappointed. The story didn’t seem to go anywhere, the characters were flat and I’d say in the case of Luna she actually un-developed as the story went on, and the world building was pretty much non-existent. This is one of the only books I nearly DNF and one which I will not be continuing when the second book is released.

Reign of Shadows

Drinking Apple Cider:
A sweet book to curl up with.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

Any book by Sarah Dessen, or any YA contemporary for that matter, would be a perfect answer for this question, but Just Listen is a favourite of mine. As the first Sarah Dessen book I picked up Just Listen holds a special place in my heart. The romance between Annabel and Owen is really sweet, and reading as both characters developed was such a huge part of why I enjoyed this book so much.

just-listen

Jumping in a Leaf Pile:
A book that reminds you of your childhood.

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

I feel like this has become a clichéd answer, anytime I’m asked a question like this Harry Potter is my answer, but it’s cliché because it’s true. Harry Potter is one of the first books I can remember reading, it’s a book I have so many fond memories attached to, and it’s a book I still love as much today as I did when I first started The Philosopher’s Stone so long ago.

Harry Potter

Scary Movie Night:
Your favourite spooky read.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

I wouldn’t say this was a spooky read per say but it is a beautiful and moving story, and I feel the monster Conor dreams of and the monster who visits him every night make this book that little bit creepy. The stories Conor is told and the lessons he learns from them are not easy ones, nothing in these stories is what it seems, but the monster has a message for Conor and he won’t leave until it has been received.

Costume Party:
A book with an eclectic cast of characters.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

I just finished this book recently and it’s the perfect answer for this question. Every Heart a Doorway has the most diverse array of characters I’ve read and every single one of them is incredibly developed as well, which is a real feat considering the book is under 200 pages. All of the wayward children at Eleanor West’s school have travelled through a doorway, and found a place they can finally belong, only to be thrown back into the real world again, broken in the process.

every-heart-a-doorway

“You want to go back, and so you hold on to the habits you learned while you were travelling, because it’s better than admitting the journey’s over.”

I’m not going to tag anyone in this because I’m not sure now who has and hasn’t done it, plus Autumn is pretty much over and we’re heading into Winter (and Christmas). However if anyone else wants to complete this tag then go for it, just send me a link to your post in the comments so I can see what your answers are.

  1. Great answers! I requested The Star-Touched Queen from the library today (I know, I have enough books but I have a problem!) and I ALMOST checked out Reign of Shadows bc it was available on Overdrive. Now I’m glad I didn’t…I thought it was weird that the book was available even though it’s still pretty new!

    1. Thanks so much Stephanie. 😀
Oh The Star-Touched Queen is such an ultimate favourite of mine so I really really hope you love it as much as I did. I will pretty much be stalking your blog waiting for your review of that one!
Yeah I honestly can’t recommend that one at all. I know there are probably people out there who loved it but I just thought there were so many problems with the characters and the story and everything I just didn’t enjoy the book and this is one rare one because I won’t be picking up the second one when it’s released either.

    1. We didn’t seem to have much of a Fall in England but now it’s getting dark and cold in waiting for Spring again! 🙂
It is really good, and I think if I can get through it you should be able to as well. Just read it during the day with the lights on, and not when you’re home alone either! 🙂

  2. This was a lot of fun to read! I can’t wait to get my hands on Caraval and The Star-Touched Queen too! And I feel the same about Labyrinth Lost – originally it wasn’t on my TBR, but after hearing so many good things about it I’m going to have to grab myself a copy!

  3. I’m beyond exited for Caraval! Ever since it was announced I have been exited to read it and I’m very happy to see all the positive reviews. I didn’t get an ARC, so I’ll have to wait until it’s released. But I’ll definitely be looking forward to your review of it! 😀
I loved A Monster Calls! It’s such a beautiful book, I would consider it spooky as well. Just the thought of a monster visiting every night makes me feel very uneasy.
I have heard great things about Every Heart a Doorway, especially recently. I’ll definitely have to check it out. Great post! 🙂

    1. Same here, I’ve had my copy pre-ordered for ages but I am so excited to be able to start reading the ARC soon. There have been so many amazing things said about it so far so I’m sure it will be amazing. Oh that’s a shame you didn’t get an ARC but I’m more than sure the wait will have been worth it when the book is finally released! 🙂
Definitely a beautiful book, and yeah the subject gave me chills at times. For me it wasn’t so much about the monster as it was the way he looked at humanity and the stories he told each night. Very creepy.
It’s a great book, and I’d highly recommend it as well. I went through it so fast because it was kind of addictive! Thanks Anna. ❤

      1. Yeah it’s a shame, but sadly Netgalley didn’t offer it to the country I live in. Sooo there was no helping it really. I’m fine though, I can wait! (After all I already own many books that I need to read.) I have a feeling it’s going to be worth the wait as well! 🙂
Same! The reason I decided to read A Monster Calls is because I heard that it was very emotional and it was dealing with loss.
I’ll definitely be checking it out! 😀

      2. Oh that is a shame. That’s happened to me with books I’m really excited for and it always sucks when you see the cover, get really excited, and then spot the ‘only available to US readers’ message; or something like that. 🙂 I think it will definitely be worth the wait though!
I’d heard the same thing, but I still think the main reason I picked A Monster Calls up was because I’d heard great things about all of Patrick Ness’s books and wanted to get started on them! 🙂

    1. I can’t wait to get started on it either. I’m hoping early next week if I get the other three books on my to-read list before it finished! I have really high hopes but I reckon this is a book that will more than live up to my expectations!
They’re both amazing, slightly different to what I thought they would be but books that stayed with me long after I finished them! ❤

  4. So many of these books are books I need to read ASAP. I can’t wait to see what you think of Caraval. I’ve heard a lot of passing great things about it but haven’t read a full review yet. It’s one on my most anticipated list for next year. And Sarah Dessen books are definitely the perfect books to curl up with. I still haven’t gotten around to rereading Just Listen. Hopefully soon. Also, I’m with you on Harry Potter. That’s one series that will always remind me of my childhood too. 😊

    1. Oh in that case you need to get around to all of them as soon as you can. Most of them are favourites of mine and as such I’d highly recommend them as well.
Caraval is one I am really excited for. I’ve heard nothing but great things about it so I can’t wait to see if it lives up to the hype. I’m sure it will though. Yeah I knew the answer for that one would be a contemporary YA book but Just Listen was the perfect one for me. It was the first Sarah Dessen book I read and as such a favourite of mine. I want to re-read it at some point as well!
Yep, Harry Potter is always going to be that series for me. I’m never going to get bored with it or get over it! 😀

      1. I plan on it! I’m already building my TBR for next year. Or at least somewhat of a rough draft idea of what I want to read.
Contemporaries definitely have that whole curl up feel, the fluffy ones anyway. And even though Just Listen does get a bit more serious at times it has those really cute moments.
Same! I could read the books or watch the movies a million times and never get bored. 😊

      2. I admire that, I can barely stick to a plan of what I want to read next month let alone next year (well, I have a very rough outline of books to be released I need to get ASAP!)
I think Just Listen was a good blend of the two; enough tension to keep you interested in the story and the characters development but enough fluffiness so it didn’t become too serious.
I’m definitely feeling a need to re-watch the films now Christmas is coming up. For some reason Harry Potter just reminds me of Christmas! 🙂

      3. I’m pretty much the same. My TBR for next year is mainly full of releases from this year I still haven’t gotten around to and also Victoria Schwab’s books and The Red Rising trilogy since everyone has recommended them to me a lot.
        It definitely was.
It reminds me of Christmas too. Especially the first movie. 😊

      4. Oh my god you definitely need to get around to V.E. Schwab’s books. They are all absolute favourites of mine and I can’t wait to see what you think of them. Also the Red Rising trilogy is amazing! 😀
Yes, for some reason even though they’re not solely set at Christmas they just have that feel to them. Not sure why though.

  5. Ooooh there are some awesome books on here that I need to add to my TBR list!!! It’s funny because everyone who had done this tag, including myself, put Harry Potter on it. But these books are just so amazing and appeal to such a wide range of people, I love them so much!! Awesome post, loved your answers 🙂

    1. In that case I hope you enjoy all the ones you’ve added to your TBR list that you pick up. I noticed that in the few people I saw who posted this tag before me as well but like I said it’s a cliché because it’s true, it’s home for everyone in one way or another and probably a series people will keep reading over and over again! 😀
      Thanks so much. ❤

  6. I haven’t done a tag in a while and I should catch up! I love your answers here, Beth – I can’t wait to see what you think of Caraval, and after meeting Aentee yesterday I feel like I should pick up When the Moon Was Ours pretty much immediately. She’s a huge fan of the book, and if you are as well then I’m sure I’m in good hands.

And Just Listen is the perfect, PERFECT book to read and curl up with. ❤

    1. I do love tags, and I have a lot left I still need to do so I don’t really have the luxury of not taking part in them for any length of time! 😀
I have very high expectations for Caraval and yeah I can’t wait to pick it up, it’s on my to-read list for early next week! When the Moon Was Ours is amazing, I think you’ll really love it Reg and if you do pick it up I can’t wait to see what you think of it either.
Yeah I just had to pick Just Listen for that. I knew it would be a contemporary book anyways but after thinking about it for a while it couldn’t really be anything other than Just Listen! 😀
