Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Want to Read Before the End of the Year

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I’ve Added To My TBR List Lately.

Instead, however, mainly because my to-read list is a mess, I decided to feature the books I want to read before the end of the year. With less than two months left I’m not sure I’ll get around to all of these but I can at least make a decent start. Besides if I don’t manage to get through all of them before the end of 2016 then they’ll be the very first books on my TBR list for 2017.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

I tried reading this book last year but I was in the middle of a reading slump and didn’t get past the first page. Since then I’ve heard some interesting things about it and want to give Magonia another try. Hopefully second time will be the charm.

Maria Dahvana Headley’s soaring YA debut is a fiercely intelligent, multilayered fantasy where Neil Gaiman’s Stardust meets John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars in a story about a girl caught between two worlds…two races…and two destinies.

Aza Ray Boyle is drowning in thin air. Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live. So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn’t think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—but as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war between Magonia and Earth is coming. In Aza’s hands lies fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

Everything I’ve heard about this book has been a glowing recommendation or a rave review. I haven’t read anything by Seanan McGuire before but this book sounds amazing so I really can’t wait to get started on it.

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Guests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere…else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced…they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

Holding Up the Universe is a book I’ve seen all around WordPress recently, and what I’ve read has been more than enough to convince me I need to pick it up myself. Hopefully it’ll be one I enjoy as much as everyone else seems to.

Everyone thinks they know Libby Strout, the girl once dubbed “America’s Fattest Teen.” But no one’s taken the time to look past her weight to get to know who she really is. Following her mom’s death, she’s been picking up the pieces in the privacy of her home, dealing with her heartbroken father and her own grief. Now, Libby’s ready: for high school, for new friends, for love, and for every possibility life has to offer. In that moment, I know the part I want to play here at MVB High. I want to be the girl who can do anything.

Everyone thinks they know Jack Masselin, too. Yes, he’s got swagger, but he’s also mastered the impossible art of giving people what they want, of fitting in. What no one knows is that Jack has a newly acquired secret: he can’t recognize faces. Even his own brothers are strangers to him. He’s the guy who can re-engineer and rebuild anything, but he can’t understand what’s going on with the inner workings of his brain. So he tells himself to play it cool: Be charming. Be hilarious. Don’t get too close to anyone.

Until he meets Libby. When the two get tangled up in a cruel high school game – which lands them in group counselling and community service – Libby and Jack are both pissed, and then surprised. Because the more time they spend together, the less alone they feel. Because sometimes when you meet someone, it changes the world, theirs and yours.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

I loved the first, and to date only, Morgan Matson book I read and if The Unexpected Everything is anything like Since You’ve Been Gone I know it will be a favourite of mine. Also who knows, Morgan Matson could become a new favourite YA contemporary author of mine.

Andie had it all planned out. When you are a politician’s daughter who’s pretty much raised yourself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future. Important internship? Check. Amazing friends? Check. Guys? Check (as long as we’re talking no more than three weeks).

But that was before the scandal. Before having to be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life. Because here’s the thing—if everything’s planned out, you can never find the unexpected. And where’s the fun in that?

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

I added this book to my to-read list after seeing a review for the third in the series by Stephanie at Teacher of YA’s Book Blog. It sounds like the kind of story I normally love, and I trust Stephanie’s opinion when it comes to books so I’m more than willing to give this series a go.

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor’s secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can’t abide. Like having to marry someone she’s never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets – secrets that may unravel her world – even as she feels herself falling in love.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

This was a book I was really excited for, however since its release I’ve seen a few mixed reviews which have kind of damped my enthusiasm. Still I’m hoping going in with lowered expectations will mean I end up being pleasantly surprised.

Three sisters. One crown. A fight to the death.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig

Normally this isn’t the kind of genre I read, I tend to stick to fantasy and lately contemporary books, but I’ve seen some reviews for Last Seen Leaving which have really captured my attention and made me determined to get around to this book as soon as I have an opportunity to.

Flynn’s girlfriend has disappeared. How can he uncover her secrets without revealing his own?

Flynn’s girlfriend, January, is missing. The cops are asking questions he can’t answer, and her friends are telling stories that don’t add up. All eyes are on Flynn—as January’s boyfriend, he must know something.

But Flynn has a secret of his own. And as he struggles to uncover the truth about January’s disappearance, he must also face the truth about himself.

The Next Together by Lauren James

I am a massive fan of time travel stories so when I read the blurb for The Next Together I immediately added it to my to-read list. Since then I have met the author at YALC and even brought the second book in the series but I still haven’t picked up The Next Together.

How many times can you lose the person you love?

Katherine and Matthew are destined to be born again and again, century after century. Each time, their presence changes history for the better, and each time, they fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated.

Spanning the Crimean War, the Siege of Carlisle and the near-future of 2019 and 2039 they find themselves sacrificing their lives to save the world. But why do they keep coming back? What else must they achieve before they can be left to live and love in peace?

Maybe the next together will be different…

A powerful and epic debut novel for teenagers about time-travel, fate and the timelessness of first love. The Next Together is told through a mixture of regular prose, diary entries, letters, “original” historical documents, news reports and internet articles.

Half Bad by Sally Green

I don’t know much about this book, past what the blurb tells me of course, but I see it every time I go into Waterstones and after seeing an amazing review for one of the later books in the series on WordPress I finally caved and brought a copy of Half Bad.

Wanted by no one.
Hunted by everyone.

Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late. But how can Nathan find his father when there is no one safe to trust, not even family, not even the girl he loves?

Half Bad is an international sensation and the start of a brilliant trilogy: a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive.

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke

This is a book that has been on my to-read list for ages, and I’ll admit a large part of the reason I added it was because of the cover. There are a few mixed reviews out there for Wink Poppy Midnight but I’ve yet to read a magical realism book I haven’t loved.

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbour girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the books you want to read before the end of the year are.

  1. This is such a fantastic list! I want to read so many of these too. I loved Every Heart A Doorway and really enjoyed Last Seen Leaving, so I hope you do too! And I’ll be super interested to see what you think of Three Dark Crowns because that was a bit of a miss for me.

    1. Thanks so much Lauren, and yeah they all sound like amazing books don’t they? I just finished Every Heart a Doorway, and will hopefully be posting my review tomorrow, but I LOVED it so much, and hopefully Last Seen leaving will be the same. 😀
Yeah I’ve seen plenty of mixed reviews for that book but I’m kind of hoping going in with lowered expectations will help my case a little you know? 🙂

  2. I have most of these on my TBR – except for the ones I’ve already read. I do really want to get to The Kiss of Deception before the end of the year though! I have heard such amazing things about that series!!

  3. All of these are on my TBR except for Wink Poppy Midnight. I wrote a rave review for that book months ago. It’s such a slow moving book, but I really loved the direction it took in the end. I’m curious what you’ll think of that one. I’m reading Three Dark Crowns this month for Hype or Like Friday. It’s sitting on my nightstand right now.

    1. I remember seeing your rave review for Wink Poppy Midnight, I think it made me bump that book up my to-read list a little because before yours I was seeing more negative ones than positives. It sounds really good and I am just in love with the cover so that was always going to influence my decision on this one! 😀
I’ve heard mixed things about Three Dark Crowns. I hope you enjoy it but either way I’ll be eagerly waiting to see your review for it.

  4. I really liked Magonia, which it seems isn’t the general consensus of the book but I love Maria’s writing. It’s so different and lovely, plus I just read the second book recently and loved it as well. Hopefully you can get into it again.

    1. No it’s definitely got more than a few mixed reviews out there, but I’ve heard from people who’ve enjoyed it as well so I guess I just have to read it and see what I think.
I hope so as well, ever since I couldn’t finish it the first time I’ve been meaning to pick it up again. I’m not in a read slump at the moment she that’s a positive start! 😀

  5. I can’t wait for you to read Holding Up The Universe and The Next Together, I hope you’ll love both of these! I read Magonia a while ago, and I remember having a hard time getting into the story, especially this fantastic world.I hope you’ll enjoy it better than I did, can’t wait to read your review 🙂

    1. Holding Up the Universe is a book I’ve heard so much about recently so it is definitely one I need to get around to ASAP, and The Next Together has been on my to-read list for a while now so it’s about time I got around to that one as well.
I feel like Magonia is going to be either hit or miss for me. I’m hoping it is a hit but for every good review there’s a mixed one and I just have no idea what to think of it. But thanks Marie, I’ll be posting a review as soon as I’m finished for sure! 😀

      1. I hope Magonia will end up being a hit for you. I really think I wasn’t maybe in the right mindset when I read it, or maybe I didn’t understand it too much on some level, but I know some peoople found it fantastic and one of a kind. I hope you’ll be one of these people 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah that’s why I wasn’t able to finish it the first time around, I wasn’t in the right mindset. But, well, it sounded amazing so I just added it back on to my to-read list.
I hope so too. I am actually really enjoying the magical realism genre, which I think this book is a part of, so that’s a promising start I guess. Do you plan to read the second book?

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It’s not very high on my priority list for now, but…I’m a bit curious as well, so I guess I’ll wait a while and see if I’m still feeling curious, or if I end up forgetting about it alltogether ahah. Or I’ll just wait to see if you enjoy it, to know if it’s worth it or not 🙂

      4. Oh I have books like that on my to-read list as well. I guess after a little while they’ll more likely than not end up coming off my to-read list just because I’m no longer interested in them.
In that case I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as I’ve finished what I think, and whether it’s worth picking up or not! 🙂

  6. I was so excited about reading Magonia (hello, would you look at that cover?) but it turned into quite a bit of disappointment. I’m reading book 2 now, or well, trying to, but I just can’t motivate myself enough to plough through it :/. Every Heart a Doorway just got my Goodreads Choice Awards vote, though! 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh that’s a shame, and about the second book as well. There seems to be more than a few mixed reviews out there for Magonia but, well, it sounds interesting enough and the cover is a huge part of why I added it to my to-read list in the first place!
And wow that’s high praise, I’m hoping to start it myself tomorrow and you’re definitely making me more excited to finally pick it up as well! 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Aye…it’s a bummer for me, but I’ve also seen people out there who love this book to bits and pieces! Haha, #coverlove! Cheers! I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! 🙂 One thing up front, though, it’s a pretty short book. Some people were a bit disappointed when they found that out while reading 😉

  7. Omg Beth, I want to read so many of these too! There’s no way I’ll get to most of them before the end of the year (especially since I’m in Japan and unable to get paper copies of most of them!) but I really want to get to some next year. The ones I’d place higher up on my TBR are:
    Magonia
    Three Dark Crowns
    Every Heart a Doorway
    Wink Poppy Midnight
    The Kiss of Deception

I actually already read The Next Together and few months back and it was pretty good! I hope you manage to get to all of these before the year’s end!

    1. They all sound amazing don’t they? I’m gonna try and get through as many as I can but who knows if I’ll be able to do that or not! Ohh, Japan sounds amazing! I hope you have a great time over there.
I’m hoping to start Every Heart a Doorway tomorrow but as for the rest it will be when I feel like getting around to them, I’m a mood reader more than anything else.
Ive heard mixed reviews for The Next Together but it is a book that sounds perfect for me so I’m willing to give it a go.
Thanks, I hope so as well! 😀

      1. In that case I hope you manage to find a copy, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did as well.
I think me and my friend are planning to go to Japan next year, but we still need to plan everything and who knows what will happen between now and he future! 🙂

  8. Great idea! I should come up with a list too because I keep forgetting titles I really wanted to read this year!
I’m hoping to read the last Throne of Glass book, Red Rising, The Girl in the Ice and an Agatha Christie!
I’m really excited about Three Dark Crowns, despite the mixed reviews. The book will arrive tomorrow and I should start it this weekend to have enough time to prepare my review for the Hype or Like Friday group. Lilyn’s review over @scifiandscary about Magonia was really good, but I’m still not sure about it. The cover is gorgeous, though!

    1. Thanks so much Donna! And yeah it’s a great way to cross some books off your overall to-read list and have a goal for the rest of the year. Although who knows if I’ll end up finishing them all.
I hope you enjoy the books on the rest of your to-read list. Both Red Rising and the last Throne of Glass book are amazing so I hope you love them!
I feel like I’m getting more excited for it, and despite the mixed reviews I have seen a few great things said about this book as well. I’ll definitely check out Lilyn’s review then, I haven’t actually seen many for Magonia but the cover love is real for this one! 😀

  9. Some great books here, Beth! I think you’ll love Half Bad. The Next Together is also well worth a read! I’ve bought the sequel but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I also really want to read Last Seen Leaving. Got to love a good mystery. Happy reading for the rest of the year! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Sammie! I know I definitely can’t wait to get started on all of these. I’ve heard some amazing things about Half Bad, and after seeing it every time I walked into Waterstones I guess it’s about time I got around to it!
I have the sequel, so I guess if I enjoy The Next Together I can jump right into the second book.
I’ve heard great things about Last Seen Leaving, I hope you really enjoy it as well.
Thanks, I hope you get some great reading done during the rest of 2016! 😀

  10. Most of these are on my TBR too, though not my immediate one. Half Bad has actually been on my TBR for years at this point and I don’t know if I’ll ever actually read it. Hopefully one day 🙈. I really hope you end up liking Last Seen Leaving. That one is still one of my favorites of this year. 😊

    1. Ahh, see these ones have either been on my to-read list for a long time or I’ve just heard so many amazing things about them that I can’t wait to get started on them!
I only actually discovered Half Bad recently, but I saw it all the time in the bookstores so I guess it was about time I caved and brought it!
I hope so too, Last Seen Leaving is one of the books on my ‘I need to get around to it ASAP’ to-read list. 😀

      1. I think with Half Bad it’s more of the fact that I haven’t heard a lot about it and initially added it to my TBR because the cover is gorgeous. That was back when I added way too many books to my TBR because of their covers 🙈. I need to look up a few reviews.
Well when you do get to it I can’t wait to see what you end up thinking! 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ll admit I haven’t heard a lot about Half Bad on WordPress, it was more just from having seen it around in physical bookstores that made it seem like it was everywhere for me. The cover is definitely gorgeous, and embarrassingly I only just realised yesterday that the red smoke actually forms a person’s face. I just thought it was a random pattern until now!
I’ll be sure to let you know when I finish it! 😀

    1. Thanks so much. Ohh, I’ve heard great things about all three of those, though Three Dark Crowns has a few more mixed reviews than the other two. I hope you enjoy them as well, and thanks again. I feel I’ll need luck to get through all of these before the end of the year.

  11. I also have Magonia and Every Heart A Doorway on my TBR! I’ve read Holding Up the Universe, TUE, TDC, Last Seen Leaving, and The Next Together, and from them I’d probably recommend Holding Up the Universe the most and The Next Together the least. Can’t wait to see what you think of them, though. ❤

    1. I’m hoping to actually start Every Heart a Doorway tomorrow, and maybe Magonia next week. They’ve both been on my to-read list for a while now and I feel I need to get around to them soon. Plus they both sound amazing! 😀
I’ve seen a lot of Holding Up the Universe around lately, I feel that’s a sign I need to pick it up ASAP. Hopefully I’ll enjoy all of them but I’ll definitely be posting reviews when I’m done with each! ❤

      1. Every Heart a Doorway especially has been getting tons of good reviews… I really need to find a copy soon.

And yeah! Well, it was quite recently published (last month) so I suppose people are still making the rounds reading and reviewing it. It’s a great book, though – not without flaws, but still good. ❤

      2. I finished reading it today and trust me it definitely deserves all the good reviews it had. Hopefully I’ll be able to post my review next week but it’s definitely a five-star read for me! 😀
I’m always looking to expand my contemporary to-read list, I seem to see more and more reviews each day so it’s definitely making its rounds on WordPress. ❤

  12. That cover of Three Dark Crowns is STUNNING. Honestly, I’ve never thought of myself as a cover-buy person, but I am being tested this week for sure. I picked up Wink Poppy Midnight for the cover as well, although I personally found it to be less captivating than the cover would suggest. I’m looking forward to hear what your own thoughts on it are! Last Seen Leaving has been on my own TBR list for a while now. Eventually, I will get to it…maybe not before the end of the year, but eventually. There truly isn’t enough time in the day for all of the fantastic novels I have yet to read! Awesome list for this week 🙂

    1. Oh yes it definitely is, and one of the things I like about the UK edition is that there are three different versions, one for each triplet I think. I still haven’t decided which one I want to buy yet.
Oh that’s a shame, like I said in my post I have heard some mixed reviews but I think for me the gorgeous cover is kind of outweighing that at the moment.
I’m hoping to start Last Seen Leaving soon, just because I’ve heard so many amazing things and the enthusiasm for it is infectious!
No definitely not enough time, but thanks Diana! 😀
