Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes …

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes …

Male Protagonists in YA Fiction.

A few weeks back I was tagged in the This or That Tag, and one of the questions was if I preferred reading about male or female protagonists. I answered female, not because I don’t enjoy reading about male protagonists but just because there are so many more YA books out there featuring female protagonists. So while thinking of possibilities for this week’s themed free for all topic I decided to feature some of my favourite male protagonists, a list which can hopefully be expanded on as more books are released.

top-ten-tuesday-44

Kaz, Matthias, Jesper and Wylan
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

There is so much happening in this duology, and while the chapters from Inej’s and Nina’s perspective are just as amazing I loved getting glimpses into Kaz’s, Matthias’s, Jesper’s and – in Crooked Kingdom – Wylan’s minds. They are such a diverse array of characters and all of them are so amazingly written. If you haven’t read this duology yet I would highly recommend running out and buying a copy of both books.

Sam
When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

This is another book that had split POVs, and although it is Miel’s chapters which contain the bulk of the story – her struggle with her powers, so to speak, and her battle with the Bonner sisters – Sam’s chapters contained a brilliant secondary story. His struggle with who he wants to be and what promises he made himself and his mother when he first became ‘Sam’.

Percy Jackson
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

While this is technically more of a middle grade book than YA I just had to include Percy Jackson somewhere on this list. He has such a sharp inner voice which made reading this series a brilliant experience for me. Percy had a unique and quick-witted take on the quests he was sent on the and Greek myths he found himself a part of.

Patroclus
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

There are probably a lot of people who know how Achilles and Patroclus’s story ends. Even though I haven’t read The Iliad yet I know how it ends. In The Song of Achilles however we see the events through different eyes and Patroclus has a very unique take on both Achilles and the events of the Trojan war. Out of every book I’ve read with a male protagonists Patroclus is my favourite.

Seth
More Than This by Patrick Ness

Patrick Ness writes amazing characters, and Seth is no different. More Than This was honestly a book that was all about his development and his journey. At the beginning of the story Seth kills himself, but when he wakes up in a strange world he finds himself looking back on his life before and what it was that led him to take his own life. Overall this is just a stunning book.

Darrow
Red Rising by Pierce Brown

I feel like Red Rising was one of the first books I read told through a solely male POV, and I loved it. Darrow goes through so much over the course of this trilogy but he still stays determined and strong no matter what. He’s a great character; complex, well developed, but at the same time he stays true to who he was in the beginning of the first book.

Kell
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

It’s been a while since I featured my favourite ever series in one of my TTT lists. Although this book is told from both Lila and Kell’s perspective I enjoyed reading Kell’s chapters that little bit more. He’s a complex character; chained to the royal family and making illegal trades of items though the different London’s, but when it comes down to it he is loyal to his London and his brother.

Simon and Baz
Carry on by Rainbow Rowell

Carry On is my favourite Rainbow Rowell book and a large part of that is because of all the voices in the story. We don’t just see things though Simon and Baz’s perspectives but all the characters at one point or another. Simon and Baz were the main two characters however and their interactions with one another made for wonderful reading.

Noah
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

This is another book with split POVs between Noah and his sister but even from the beginning I loved Noah’s chapters that little bit more than Jude’s. Both of the siblings change after the death of their mother; seeing what happened to Noah before his mother died made his actions through Jude’s eyes at sixteen so much more emotional in their own way.

Todd
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Given how much I loved Patrick Ness’s books I just had to include another on this week’s list. The Chaos Walking trilogy is my all-time favourite and a large part of that is because of the development of the characters. Reading what Todd goes through across all three books is beyond anything else I’ve read before in terms of character development, the Todd we meet in the first book is nothing alike the Todd we know in the last one.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or who some of your favourite male protagonists are.

    1. That’s all right, but I would highly recommend picking them up. Especially A Darker Shade of Magic, and The Knife of Never Letting Go, and all of them actually now I think about it because they’re pretty much all favourite of mine! But maybe start with A Darker Shade of Magic and The Knife of Never Letting Go! 😀

  1. I’m so happy to recognize titles and be able to say I read them or want to, haha I don’t feel like a baby blogger anymore!! I agree about Patroclus, it was lyrical and beautiful to read his story. Red Rising, Six of Crows and A Darker Shade of Magic are on my TBR! I’m hoping to read Red Rising this month and Six of Crows for Christmas. I also answered female protagonist for that question, the book world is overflowing with female main characters. So much that when I read A Suitable Lie, with a man at the center of the story, it felt so refreshing I knew something was wrong!! I need a stronger male presence in my books! Well, well-written male protagonists of course!

    1. Whoo, that’s good. Some of these though are popular books I think everyone has at least heard of if not read (who hasn’t heard of Percy Jackson right?)
God I’m still not over The Song of Achilles, it just an amazing story. And the three you have on your TBR list are all-time favourites of mine so I really can’t wait to see what you think of them Donna, especially ADSOM!
Exactly, and I do enjoy reading female main characters don’t get me wrong, other favourites of mine have female protagonists. But there are so few books with male characters it feels like an untapped market in a way. 🙂

  2. S many great choices on your list! I tend to read more female mains as well because it just seems like there are more of them in the books that I read but I love a good male main XD Kell, Kaz, Jesper, and Wylan are definitely some of my all time faves 😀

    1. Thanks so much. I think when it comes down to it I’m always going to read more books with female protagonists just because there are so many more being released, but that’s not to say there aren’t amazing male protagonists out there as well!
Same here, and not just because ADSOM and the Six of Crows duology are two of my all-time favourite series! 😀

  3. What a good topic! I agree, I feel like female protagonists are the majority in YA literature, but I really enjoy mixing it up. If asked which I prefer to read, male or female POV, I’m not sure I can provide a solid answer. I really do enjoy both for different reasons. I just recently read Carry On and I loved it, way more than I thought I would. I also love Red Rising, it’s one of my favorite series’. I just made my sister read it by forcing her hand and buying her all three books for her birthday 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah that’s not to say there aren’t some amazing female protagonists, but there are just as many amazing male ones out there who don’t have as much recognition you know.
I’m the same, I enjoy both for different reasons but given I’ve read more female than male I feel that almost answers the question for me
Carry On is amazing and so is Red Rising, though both in different ways obviously. 🙂
In that case I hope your sister enjoys the series too, and book presents are always the best presents aren’t they?

  4. Wow, you really picked an awesome topic for this one! Sadly, I haven’t read any of the books yet, so I have no idea about these guys, but I definitely liked that the protagonist in the Ink and Bone series (The Great Library) was a guy, and an awesome one on top of that! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Anna! And yeah this was a topic I had so many characters for, not all of them made it onto this list but the ones that did are favourites of mine! They’re brilliant books too so I’d highly recommend them if you have them on your TBR list already.
Oh I didn’t think of Ink and Bone when writing this list but you’re right, another amazing male protagonist! 😀

  5. I think we might be book soulmates, because your list speaks to me. I completely agree with Patroclus in The Song of Achilles. I adore the story and how he handles everything? He’s such a strong character. A few other highlights of the list for me was Darrow and all of the SIx of Crows boys! Brilliant choices.

    1. In that case I’m really glad you enjoyed my list, and agreed with my picks as well. Oh The Song of Achilles is just a brilliant story, and even months after I’ve read it I’m still not over what happened. I knew it was coming but I was in no way prepared for it. Darrow is an amazing character, probably my favourite off this list, and Six of Crows is a brilliant story as well. Have you read Crooked Kingdom yet? It’s even better! 😀

      1. I haven’t! Although I’m almost 100% sure that I’m going to love it. Waiting for christmas or for my budget to allow it c:

  6. Six of Crows and I’ll Give You The Sun are SUCH BEAUTIFUL BOOKS. AAAAHHH. I’m also dying to read Red Rising and ADSOM. They’re been sitting on my shelf for months now and I am so excited to start reading them!

    GREAT LIST. AAAH.

    1. Definitely. 😀 I’ll Give You the Sun is one of my all-time favourite YA contemporary books, and have you read Crooked Kingdom yet? That’s my favourite book of 2016 so far!
Oh my god you need to pick up ADSOM and Red Rising as soon as possible, both are amazing and I feel like I recommend them to everyone but they are favourites of mine so I literally want everyone to read them!
      Thanks! 😀

  7. I’ve finally read Red Rising and yeees! Darrow was such a great protagonist – he definitely stays true to himself and dear god, he’s going through so much. I’m actually amazed he’s still alive (though I know he will be because he’s the protagonist, but still). 😂

    1. Yes Reg, I can’t wait to see what you think of it! Darrow is a brilliant character and even though he grows through the novel he stays true to his roots, which is kind of refreshing in stories like these.
Oh there were times when I genuinely worried about Darrow, especially in the second book. Even though he’s the protagonist I still thought there were some very close calls in Red Rising that could have gone either way honestly.

      1. I think that’s exactly why the book is as successful as it is – the suspense was real, and when you worry for the protagonist’s well-being you know the author had successfully gripped the reader’s attention. I have Golden Son on my TBR and I’m hoping to get into it soon – I hope it’s just as good. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      2. In that case that makes Red Rising one of the most successful books I’ve read to date. Honestly there were parts I read so quickly because I needed to get to the next page and find out if Darrow survived!
Golden Son is even better, and the way it ends will leave you desperate for the third book as well so I’d be prepared for that! 🙂

  8. I haven’t read all of these yet but yes to the ones I have read. I love Kaz, Darrow, and Patroclus. All of the are my favorite reads this year. I’m still plugging away with Golden Son. I got so sidetracked with some ARCs I needed to read and review by the pub dates. I’m loving what I have read. 🙂

    1. Oh in that case I’d definitely recommend the ones who haven’t read Jill, especially if you loved Kaz, Darrow and Patroclus! I think Crooked Kingdom is my favourite read of this year so far but The Song of Achilles is up there as well! 😀
I still need to re-read the Red Rising trilogy and get started on Morning Sun, hopefully I’ll be able to do that soon, but ARCs can be distracting can’t they? And it’s great you’re really enjoying what you have read at the moment too.

  9. This is a brilliant list, Beth! I know we’ve previously talked about male protagonists in YA and how we wouldn’t mind more. On your list I’ve only read The Lighting Theif, I’ll Give You The Sun, and Six of Crows but the rest are on my TBR. Six of Crows is probably my favorite as far as male protagonists go. Kaz, Matthias, Jesper and Wylan are all so unique and memorable! As far as books I’ve read and favorite male protagonists one of my all time favorites is Seth from The Return by Jennifer L. Armentrout. That one is more NA but since you like Greek mythology I highly recommend that along with The Covenant series by the same author as The Return is a spin-off of that series. 😊

    1. Thanks so much Melissa, for some reason this comment didn’t come up on my notifications so sorry I’m a little late replying to it. 🙂
Yes, there is always a need for more male protagonists but this is a list of my favourites if you’re looking for somewhere to start off with, especially if you’ve only got a few of them on your read list! 🙂
I think the characters from Six of Crows are my second favourites (Patroclus from The Song of Achilles is my favourite at the moment). There were so many amazing voices in Six of Crows, and I loved them all so much more in Crooked Kingdom!
I’ve read the first book but not the second. I really liked Seth in the Half Blood series so when I found out he was getting his own book I couldn’t wait! 😀

      1. You’re welcome and it’s okay 😊! That happens to me sometimes too.
I’ll definitely be looking into some of these. I especially need to get to reading When The Moon Was Ours.
There really was and I can’t wait until I read CK this month. 😃
Well I hope you enjoy the second book whenever you get to it. Although I think you’ll love it. It’s so good!

      2. I always seem to be having some kind of problem with WordPress, be it with pingbacks or comments. Who knows what will go wrong with it next?
When the Moon is Ours is amazing, it is one of the best magical realism books I’ve read to date and I think you’ll really love it Melissa. Oh same with CK, god I can’t wait for you to finish that one so I can see what you think of it!
Same here, I loved the first book so I have high hopes for the second one! 😀

      3. So do I! I think I’m having a problem with my comments and notifications. I’ve noticed several of my comments going through for bloggers I regularly chat with and them not seeing them because they aren’t showing in their notifications. 😣
I have a feeling I’ll love it too. I want to read both of the authors books as soon as I have the chance.
There are so many books I want to read before the end of the year at this point lol. 🙈

      4. At least now it’s something I know I need to be on the lookout for. It seems there are a few bugs with WordPress, and there have been in the past as well, so hopefully this is one that gets sorted out soon.
I’d say start with When the Moon Was Ours because that is the better one, or at least it is in my opinion, plus I just want you to read that one sooner so I can see what you think of it! 😀
Same here, I’ve got a to-read list for the end of the year, god knows if I’m going to make it through every book on there!

      5. Hopefully! I remember the other week there was a lag in the WordPress reader and they got it fixed pretty quickly.
I’m definitely going to start with When the Moon Was Ours. I’ve read so many reviews for it at this point that I want to read it really bad. Just gotta find the time between other books.
I know I’m not going to finish my list. It’s way too long at this point. 😂

      6. Accident pressed send before I’d finished writing my comment :/ sorry about that.
But yes When the Moon Was Ours is definitely worth reading, and it deserves all the amazing reviews I think you would have read for it as well. It’s one of my favourite magical realism books now and that’s saying a lot I think! 🙂

      7. See the app never works right for me. It either crashes or doesn’t load full comments and I’ve also had a lag problem with the reader. WordPress and their glitches. *sigh* 😣
Well I can’t wait until I get the chance to get around it. Hopefully before the end of the year. I have a two week break next month and am planning to read as much as I can during that time. 😊

      8. Oh it’s crashed a few times for me as well, and the annoying thing is when it crashes in the middle of me writing a comment. :/
After a while the app slows down as well but that’s likely because of my phone overheating more than anything else.
Ohh, that sounds like it’ll be fun, a break from everything but reading I’m assuming. May be nice to take a step back from things for a while you know?

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah there are very few males in YA fiction but the ones they are are just brilliant characters so at the moment it’s a case of quality over quantity (ideally though we’d have both quality and quantity).
Oh you definitely need to start A Darker Shade of Magic, it’s an amazing book and one of my all-time favourites! 😀

  10. Oh my god, this is the best list I’ve seen all day. SO many great choices on here – especially A Darker Shade of Magic (aka Heart Eyes for Days). I’ve seen a lot of Patrick Ness books on here, even though I’ve only read one of his books: The Rest of Us Just Live Here, which has one of my personal favorite male protagonists in YA lit. I also adore Going Bovine by Libba Bray, and I really wish she had more books in that style. Loving your picks for this week!

    1. Thanks so much Diana. Yeah I got the idea for the theme after realising there were very few male protagonists compared to the female ones. A Darker Shade of Magic is one of my favourite series too, god I need the last book so badly!
Patrick Ness is an amazing author. He’s written so many amazing male characters I couldn’t just pick one of his for this week’s topic!
Ohh, I’ll have to check out Going Bovine, I really enjoyed A Great and Terrible Beauty by her so I need to check out more of her work.
      Thanks again Diana! 😀
