Top Ten Tuesday: Top Top Ten Characters I’d Love to Have as Family Members

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Characters I’d Name a Child/Pet After.

However I really struggled with this one, I don’t tend to read character names and think they’d be perfect for my future child or pet. So instead I changed it to Top Ten Characters I’d Love to Have as Family Members. There are so many characters I fall in love with from the moment they’re introduced and if I could pick my family, and if I could pluck the characters I love out of their books, I’d love to be able to call them members of my family.

Kenji Kishimoto
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Kenji was my favourite character in the whole of the Shatter Me trilogy, and I’ve said before I’d love to have someone like him in my life as a best friend or older brother. He is kind but sharp tongued and hilarious, and while he is often the light-hearted relief when things get too heavy he can be deadly serious, willing to pull out the tough love when it’s needed.

The Psychics at 300 Fox Way
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

It would be amazing to live in a house with psychics. Every time we saw 300 Fox Way during the Raven Cycle series it always seemed so chaotic and full to bursting, but at the same time there was such a real family dynamic there and a lot of love between all the characters.

Lady Jane Grey
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Jane was a brilliant character. Her love of reading is very similar to my own but beyond that her loyalty to her family, her cousin Edward and her husband G, make her willing to go the extra mile to keep them safe. She is dedicated, smart, and for the few days she ruled she proved herself a capable queen as well.

Ella Malikov
Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I really loved everything about Ella; her sarcastic back and forth with Nik and her confidence in being the best computer hacker there is, but above all her loyalty to her family and the love she has them. She knows all about Nik’s past and gets defensive when other people try to judge him without knowing the full story.

Millard Nullings
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Millard was my favourite of all the peculiar children. As an invisible boy he was able to sneak into places the others could not, which came in handy during their journey, but above that he was really clever as well. He studied a lot, both the effects of the time loop on the citizens in Wales and later everything they came across outside their loop, and always seemed to have answers if they could be found in books.

Todd
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

In the Chaos Walking trilogy Todd is the character everyone seems to want to be around. His dedication to Viola aside he manages to change the Mayor and Davy Prentiss, making them better people. When Todd loves someone he does with everything for them, and the people he cares about become the most important people in the world to him.

Jamie Hunter
Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

When it comes to substitute parents Jamie Hunter is one of the best that’s ever been written. He could have very easily given up or written off Ruby as a lost cause. Instead he makes an effort to bring her into his and Cora’s lives; bringing them both into his family and his family traditions, giving them both a home and hope for the future.

Finn O’Sullivan
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Finn’s dedication to Roza, even when the rest of Bone Gap give up on her and believe her to be gone of her own free will, would make him an incredibly loyal friend or family member for anyone to have.

Cress Darnel
Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress is an incredible character, and in spite of being alone on the satellite for years she hasn’t turned bitter. Instead she is a genuinely kind, sweet, adventurous and intelligent girl. Cress wants friends, she wants a family, and she really does find that with Throne and the rest of the Rampion crew.

Riley/Flicker
Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan and Deborah Biancotti

Riley relationship with her sister was one of my favourite parts of this book. Although Riley has powers and her sister doesn’t the two are still really close, and may even be closer because of the nature of Riley’s gift. Riley has the other Zeroes but her sister still remains the most important person in her life and it was a great dynamic to read between the two of them.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what characters you’d name a child or pet after or alternatively what characters you’d like to be members of your family.

  1. I love your twist on this week’s topic! I’m so with you on Kenji and Millard. Kenji was a favorite of mine in Shatter Me as well, he was so hilarious. I’d definitely love to have him as a brother. Thinking about what characters I’d want as family members the first one who popped into my head was Magnus from the Shadowhunters books or even Mor from ACOMAF. Magnus can make anything appear and would probably be a great uncle or cousin and I feel like Mor would be the perfect big sister. I’m the big sister in my family so I’ve always wondered what having an older sister would be like haha. Great list, Beth! 😊

    1. Thanks so much, yeah I had a lot of troube with the original one because, although I have favourite names for possible future children/pets it’s not really because I read them in a book. More just because I liked the name and if a book character has it as well it’s purely coincidence.
I hear so many people say that about Kenji but he was just an amazing character, and really well written as well which is a plus in secondary characters you know? I really want him to be real just so he can be my older brother! Millard would possibly be more of a younger brother because I just want to protect him from the world. 🙂
Oh Mor and Magnus would be great, I can’t believe I didn’t include those two but there are always books that just skip my mind when I’m coming up with TTT posts for the week. I can definitely see Magnus as a brilliant uncle or cousin, and his ability to make things appear out of thin air would be amazing!
      Thanks Melissa! 😀

      1. It definitely is. He was the perfect secondary character. Although I would have loved to have heard more of his backstory, I was always curious about that. I heard a rumor that Tahereh is working on a sequel or going to be. I’m not sure if they’re anything more than rumors but it would be neat after the open ending. I completely agree about Millard. 😊
It so would! Everyone would love Magnus as family get togethers. I do think he would get annoyed with being asked to make things appear a lot though 😂.
        You’re welcome! ♥

  2. I would love – like, LOVE – to have Jamie as an older brother figure. I probably have a little bit of a crush on him because he’s just so, so sweet to Cora, Tbh in that book I was more into Jamie than Nate, haha. He’s just the complete package. 💖

And Jane would be a fun best friend to have, I think.

    1. Same here, as soon as I started writing books for this topic I knew Jamie would have to go in there somewhere. He was y favourite character in Lock and Key and definitely one of the best family members I’ve read in ages! Definitely the complete package! 😀
She so would, she was my favourite character in My Lady Jane and probably one everyone has something in common with. 🙂

  3. I loved My Lady Jane! 🙌 Jane was a funny and smart character I really liked. I still haven’t finished Miss Peregrine’s or The Raven Boys and I haven’t read the rest of these yet, but I definitely agree with you on Jane. I also really liked Edward, which took me by surprise. 🙂

    1. Oh I agree, all the characters in My Lady Jane were amazing but Jane was definitely my favourite (and I agree with you about Edward as well, I was definitely surprised by how much I liked his character). 😀
The Miss Peregrine books and The Raven Cycle series are amazing so I’d definitely recommend finishing those series as soon as you get a chance. Did you enjoy what you’ve read so far of both?

      1. Oh that’s a shame, but I guess everyone has different opinions on books and obviously it can’t be for everyone. I have seen a few negative-ish reviews for The Raven Cycle books as well.
I was the same with Miss Peregrine’s with the first book but it gets better as it goes along so I hope the rest of the series is more enjoyable for you. 😀
