Top Ten Tuesday: Top Top Ten Characters I’d Love to Have as Family Members

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Characters I’d Name a Child/Pet After.

However I really struggled with this one, I don’t tend to read character names and think they’d be perfect for my future child or pet. So instead I changed it to Top Ten Characters I’d Love to Have as Family Members. There are so many characters I fall in love with from the moment they’re introduced and if I could pick my family, and if I could pluck the characters I love out of their books, I’d love to be able to call them members of my family.

Kenji Kishimoto
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Kenji was my favourite character in the whole of the Shatter Me trilogy, and I’ve said before I’d love to have someone like him in my life as a best friend or older brother. He is kind but sharp tongued and hilarious, and while he is often the light-hearted relief when things get too heavy he can be deadly serious, willing to pull out the tough love when it’s needed.

The Psychics at 300 Fox Way
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

It would be amazing to live in a house with psychics. Every time we saw 300 Fox Way during the Raven Cycle series it always seemed so chaotic and full to bursting, but at the same time there was such a real family dynamic there and a lot of love between all the characters.

Lady Jane Grey
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Jane was a brilliant character. Her love of reading is very similar to my own but beyond that her loyalty to her family, her cousin Edward and her husband G, make her willing to go the extra mile to keep them safe. She is dedicated, smart, and for the few days she ruled she proved herself a capable queen as well.

Ella Malikov
Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I really loved everything about Ella; her sarcastic back and forth with Nik and her confidence in being the best computer hacker there is, but above all her loyalty to her family and the love she has them. She knows all about Nik’s past and gets defensive when other people try to judge him without knowing the full story.

Millard Nullings
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Millard was my favourite of all the peculiar children. As an invisible boy he was able to sneak into places the others could not, which came in handy during their journey, but above that he was really clever as well. He studied a lot, both the effects of the time loop on the citizens in Wales and later everything they came across outside their loop, and always seemed to have answers if they could be found in books.

Todd
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

In the Chaos Walking trilogy Todd is the character everyone seems to want to be around. His dedication to Viola aside he manages to change the Mayor and Davy Prentiss, making them better people. When Todd loves someone he does with everything for them, and the people he cares about become the most important people in the world to him.

Jamie Hunter
Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

When it comes to substitute parents Jamie Hunter is one of the best that’s ever been written. He could have very easily given up or written off Ruby as a lost cause. Instead he makes an effort to bring her into his and Cora’s lives; bringing them both into his family and his family traditions, giving them both a home and hope for the future.

Finn O’Sullivan
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Finn’s dedication to Roza, even when the rest of Bone Gap give up on her and believe her to be gone of her own free will, would make him an incredibly loyal friend or family member for anyone to have.

Cress Darnel
Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress is an incredible character, and in spite of being alone on the satellite for years she hasn’t turned bitter. Instead she is a genuinely kind, sweet, adventurous and intelligent girl. Cress wants friends, she wants a family, and she really does find that with Throne and the rest of the Rampion crew.

Riley/Flicker
Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan and Deborah Biancotti

Riley relationship with her sister was one of my favourite parts of this book. Although Riley has powers and her sister doesn’t the two are still really close, and may even be closer because of the nature of Riley’s gift. Riley has the other Zeroes but her sister still remains the most important person in her life and it was a great dynamic to read between the two of them.
