Wordless Wednesday: Baking

Wordless Wednesday is a new weekly tag created by Grace at Kimmie.gg. Each week there’s a new topic, unrelated to books, which will hopefully provide some insight into my life outside of reading.

Each week, I will post a topic for a Wordless Wednesday that you may answer in whatever fashion you may like. All you need to do is link back to Kimmie.gg in your post so that I can also read your content!

This week’s theme was Hobbies but I adapted it a little to fit one of my main hobbies, outside of reading of course, which is baking. I have a few favourite recipes but when it comes down to it I’m willing to give everything a go. Certain recipes worked better than others; I’m really good at making cookies and cheesecakes but not so good at brownies and truffles. I have my favourite tried and true recipes – gingerbread cookies – and ones I have to try the next time I pick up my cookbooks – marshmallows.

I’m taking part in a Great British Bake Off challenge next week for work. Each of us are bringing in some kind of cake or cookie and we’ll vote for one Star Baker. I’m bringing in some gingerbread cookies because they’re my favourite things to make. They probably won’t win but hopefully my colleagues will enjoy them.

So, what do you think; did you take part in this week’s Wordless Wednesday or will you be taking part in next week’s? Also what are some of your hobbies; do you enjoy baking, or even have some recipes you’d recommend I try out? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Your cakes and cookies look so good! I did a bit of baking today, I tried out a recipe for low calorie brownies (there’s a post about it on my blog, if you want to know more). I enjoy baking too and want to try out more recipes and do more baking. I did make some sugar cookies at Christmas, but I didn’t consider making little voodoo doll ones! They look so cute and cool! I see so many great recipes on Pinterest and I love to make them for my friends and family. I also enjoy reading as well, i’ve just started a book called Highly Illogical Behaviour.

    1. Thanks so much. Ohh that’s great about you baking, I’ve never actually managed to make brownies that actually come out right, but I guess there’s something everyone has trouble with, brownies just seem to be mine.
Sugar cookies are kind of a staple of mine, so easy and you can do them themed as well for different occasions. Pinterest is where I find most of my recipes actually, and oh I hope you enjoy Highly Illogical Behaviour. I read it a while ago now and really loved it! πŸ˜€

      1. I get most of my recipes from pinterest too, there is so many great ideas and inspiration. I also find recipes on BBC goodfood. I’m not far through Highly Illogical Behaviour but I think I’m going to enjoy it. I made some sugar cookies at Christmas from a recipe on Zoella’s website, I got so many out of it! πŸ™‚

      1. I like to host monthly brunches for my friends and i really want to make those Voodoo Doll cookies for October’s. Can you give me any tips on how to make the icing dry relatively quickly? Last time i attempted to decorate with icing the cookies eventually got smeared :/ And i don’t want to leave them out for 24 hours because i’m afraid they will go stale :/

      2. Ohh monthly brunches sound amazing.
Honestly normally I just wait until the icing dries naturally but I suppose you could put the cookies in the fridge. It’ll keep them fresh but should help harden the icing a little quicker as well!
I hope they do well for you! πŸ˜€

    1. Yeah it was a lot of fun taking part in this one! I wouldn’t say I was great at baking either, but it’s something I’ve gotten a lot of practise at so yeah, give some of those recipes a go!
Thanks so much, looking at all the pictures made me hungry as well! πŸ˜€

  2. All of these look so amazing Beth! I wish I was able to reach into a computer screen and take some because they look like they’re delicious. Especially those cupcakes! I kind of want to run out to the store and buy stuff to make cupcakes now πŸ™ˆ.

    1. Thanks so much Melissa! Yeah I’ll admit looking at these pictures made me wish I could reach through my computer screen and pick out some of these as well!
I have a whole list of cupcakes I want to make, and cookies, and cakes, and pretty much everything else you can imagine. πŸ˜€ Gotta get baking again soon!

      1. You’re welcome!!β™₯
I’m actually not much of a baker, though I like to pretend I am sometimes lol. I’m great at sticking to easy recipes I find online though. I might have to search up some fall cupcake ones because I’ve been wanting something with apple in it. So many possibilities! I hope you have fun with all of your baking. 😊

      2. It just takes practise, start with the easy recipes and work your way up through the more difficult ones. That’s what I did but even how there are things I have trouble with, mainly brownies! πŸ™‚
Ohh fall cupcakes sound like they could be interesting, so many possibility as well, I may have to look some up as well!
Thanks, got quite a bit to do this weekend actually! πŸ˜€

      3. True! I’m actually pretty good with brownies. A few years back I went brownie crazy and made all different kinds πŸ™ˆ. I want to get better at making caramel though. I’ve tried a few times and it never turns out right lol. And I’m kind of terrible at cookies. They never turn out how they should haha. But like you said practice! 😊

Virtually send some to me! *reaches through computer* πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ

      4. See I can’t do brownies at all, there’s just something that doesn’t work. No matter how many I make they all turn out more like cake than brownie! I’ve given up on them for a little while now. I guess everyone has something they can’t make!
If only that could happen, reaching through a computer to grab food, god that would be amazing! πŸ˜€

      5. That’s how a lot of my cookies turn out! More like cake than cookie. It’s so weird lol. Either they’re like cake or they aren’t soft enough and I’m like “What are you doing wrong Melissa?” πŸ˜‚
        True!
I know right!? I would be snaking constantly if that was the case though. I can imagine wanting something and googling a picture and just snatching it up lol.

      6. Thats exactly how I feel about brownies, I follow the recipe exactly and I just can’t for the life of me work out what I’m doing wrong, but I guess everyone must have something they can’t do right?!
I snack enough as it is so probably better for me that this isn’t a real thing! πŸ˜€

  3. Oh my gosh everything looks so good! πŸ˜€ I love baking, actually my brother just texted me that I have to bake him brownies for school haha, but I enjoy it a lot. I wish I had more time to bake because it’s so fun & exciting! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks so much! I know what you mean about wishing you had more time to bake, I completely feel the same because there’s so many recipes I want to try out and not enough time! πŸ˜€
Ohh brownies sound yummy, I really wish I could make those but they never seem to come out right for some reason beyond my control!

    1. If you give me some advance notice so I can bake something for you then sure! πŸ˜€
But thank you so much! I love baking and I’m pleased everything came out so well as well.
I’m actually thinking of doing the almond and pistachio cookies for work next week, maybe as well as the gingerbread men, who knows?
      Thanks Donna! ❀

  4. Oh my god, Beth. You write the best reviews, take the best photos and now I find out you can bake too?? This isn’t fair πŸ˜… These all look so delicious and I want to eat them all πŸ˜… I do enjoy baking occasionally but everything ends up looking like a disaster. They taste good though so I suppose that’s the main thing.

    1. Ahh, thank you so much Lauren, I love baking as much as I love blogging (and that’s saying something) and I have a lot more recipes I want to try out so I may post some pics of the results on my Instagram!
Looking at these pictures made me really hungry as well! But yeah I think as long as whatever you bake ends up tasting good it doesn’t really matter what it looks like, better than the other way around right?

    1. Thanks so much Jill! πŸ˜€ Oh I love baking, it’s a learning curve because there is still a lot I need to learn but it’s a lot of fun as well.
The mummy cookies I made last year for Halloween, I got the idea off a Tumblr post but I was really pleased with the way they turned out! πŸ˜€ Ohh Halloween decorations, you’re really getting in the mood aren’t you? πŸ™‚

And yeah I love baking so it’s something I really need to do more often too, just need to find the time in between work and blogging right? ❀

    1. Thanks so much, and yeah looking at these pictures made me want to start baking again. I’m not too good at cooking, I can stick stuff in the oven and wait for it to be done, but baking is more where my talents lie and I love it so any excuse.
Thanks again, honestly I’d settle for just having my colleagues enjoy the cookies I make then!
Ohh, hope that was a yummy pastry, what one did he get you? (Now I’m feeling really hungry!)
