August Recap

August has been the month that summer finally hit England (better late than never I suppose) and now I’m holding my breath waiting for the colder weather to hit because it’s just too hot.

I managed to get through a fair more books this month, I also started taking part in another weekly feature which I am having a lot of fun with, and honestly not much else happened in August for me. Where July was a really busy month for me things seemed to calm down a little in August and I was able to devote a little more time to blogging. There are still a fair few things I want to do for my blog, creating a Goodreads account remains at the top of that list, but eventually I’ll get around to them all.

Reviews

August Recap, #1

More Than This by Patrick Ness

I had no clue what to expect going into this book, and even while reading it I had no clue what was going on, but it was all part of the reading experience. I had so many theories throughout reading More Than This and even though none of them turned out to be 100% correct guessing was all part of the fun.

And I Darken by Kiersten White

There were so many amazing reviews for this book on WordPress so I was really excited to get started on it. And I Darken was completely different to what I expected it to be but not in a bad way. The book focuses on Lada’s life, it was enjoyable reading her journey and I can’t wait to see where she, Radu and Mehmed go in the next book.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

August Recap, #2

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

This was another book which I saw so many amazing reviews for. I got a copy of My Lady Jane from my June Owl Crate box, and I’m so glad I did because I’m not sure if I would have picked this book up otherwise. A humorous retelling of Jane Grey’s life but with a happier ending I was hooked from the first page to the last.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I love Greek mythology so the fact that I hadn’t picked up this book before was a bit of a surprise. I haven’t read The Iliad but I knew how the story would end for both Achilles and Patroclus before going into The Song of Achilles. This book was heartbreaking; even when I knew what was coming I couldn’t quite believe it when it actually happened.

August Recap, #3

An Ember in the Ashes Series

I’ve had this series on my to-read list for a while, and when I received an ARC of A Torch Against the Night from YALC I knew I had to get started on it. I loved both books – the setting, the story, the characters – I didn’t even mind the love square going on. I thought the second book was even better than the first, and I hope the third book will carry on that trend.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

I received a copy of this book from HarperVoyager.

P.S. I Like You

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

I haven’t read any of Kasie West’s books before, despite having them all on my to-read list. But when I saw an amazing five-star review on WordPress I immediately picked up P.S. I Like You and started reading. This book is a cute and fluffy YA contemporary, something I’d recommend for a quick afternoon read.

August Recap, #4

Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children Series

This is one of the series which I’ve had on my to-read list for a while now, but with the movie being released at the end of September I knew I had to pick up the first book at least. Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series is a completely unique concept and, although the first book wasn’t as good as the rest, books two and three were beyond amazing.

Waiting on Wednesday #9

Wordless Wednesdsay

I started a new weekly tag this month and posted four Wordless Wednesday features.

Soundtrack of My Life

Wanderlust

Fashion

Best Friends for Life

I haven’t got any set plans for what I’m going to read or do with my blog next month. I have a few ARC reviews which will be posted towards the end of September but otherwise it will be more of the same. I have put myself on a book buying ban, the reasons of which will be obvious to anyone who’s seen my book hauls for this month, so I may get around to some re-reads in September as well.

  1. Such an impressive wrap up, thanks for sharing! I’m so glad to hear that A Torch Against the Night is even better than An Ember in the Ashes – I’m absolutely dying to continue with the series.

  2. Once again I am so impressed and in awe of your reading AND reviewing!! 😍 I’m so glad you enjoyed Miss Peregrines! I NEED to read the last book, haha. I also really need to read The Song of Achilles, An Ember in the Ashes and More Than This. Also looking forward to you creating a Goodreads account! I’d love to follow your reading progress.

    1. Thanks Lauren! Yeah I managed to get through some amazing books this month, a few have made my favourites list as well. 🙂
Miss Peregrine’s is a really good series, I hope you enjoy the last book.
Oh all three are amazing books, you definitely need to read them. Especially The Song of Achilles which will rip your heart out but you will love it anyways.
I will be creating a Goodreads account, hopefully soon, it’s high on my list of things I need to get around to at least!

    1. Thanks! Yeah I got through some amazing books this month. A Torch Against the Night was an amazing book, better than An Ember in the Ashes so if you enjoyed the first then you’ll really enjoy the second!
That’s a shame you didn’t enjoy Miss Peregrine’s but the second two books are better so if you’re willing to give the second two a try I’d recommend picking them up.
Thanks, I hope you have a good September too! 😀

    1. I went on a book buying ban for about a month around June but this will be a much longer one. I’m not sure how well I’ll do but I need to do something to manage my book buying addiction, or try to anyways.
Yep August was a great month and hopefully September will be the same! 😀

    1. Yep, managed to get through some good books this month! 🙂
And thanks, I’m going to need all the luck I can get given that I’m incapable of controlling myself when it comes to buying books.
Good luck to you as well, just take it one month at a time and see where that gets you! 😀

  3. Looks like a really productive month, Beth! And it feels like you’ve enjoyed most of the books you’ve read and reviewed too, which is always great. 🙂

I think I might pick up PS I Like You this weekend – I don’t have too many things planned and am really up for a feel-good book.

Hope you have a fabulous September! And good luck with the book buying ban. 😛

    1. Thanks Reg! Yeah I’ve been quite lucky that most of the books I’ve picked up in the past few months I have really enjoyed. Hopefully that’s a trend that will continue next month as well!
I really enjoyed P.S. I Like You so obviously I’d recommend it to anyone. It a light quick read but sometimes that’s the kind of book you need when you don’t have much planned! I hope you enjoy it. 🙂
Thanks, and the same to you. And yeah I’m going to need all the luck I can get, I’m not good at sticking to book buying bans, especially for as long as I’m planning this one!

      1. I hope so too! Can’t wait to see what you’re reading next month and hope you love them all. 🙂

Yeah, for sure. I’ve been reading a lot of NA lately and that’s not my usual genre, but after Nevernight I really needed to wind down and enjoy an easier world, haha. NA definitely did the trick for me.

      2. I’m starting off with A Monster Calls so I’m positive I’m going to love that book at least! 😀
I’m hoping to get through some contemporaries this month as well, after reading P.S. I Like You I want to get through more of Kasie West’s books, and I guess it’s the perfect time to get started on Sarah Dessen’s latest releases too! I know what you mean about needed an easier world too! 😀

      3. I just reread Just Listen last month and it’s still as good as I remember. Currently rereading Lock and Key, which is my second favourite. They’re SO good – sometimes I wonder if I read them as an adult if I’ll love them just as much, because the nostalgia is definitely a huge part of it for me.

      4. Lock and Key is the next Sarah Dessen book I need to get around to. It’s been on my to-read list for ages now. It’s great to hear they’re just as good reading them again though, sometimes you can go back to books you’ve loved and just hate them! But I guess like you said there is the nostalgia there. Either way if you enjoy them you enjoy them right? 🙂

    1. More Than This is an amazing book. I don’t think you’ll be able to completely guess what’s going on; I certainly wasn’t able to and I don’t know anyone who could. But I think that’s part of the fun of reading it.
Thanks, and yeah I managed to get through some amazing books last month, hopefully I’ll have some just as amazing ones to get through this month as well! 😀
