July/August Book Haul

So after all the books I brought at YALC at the end of July I still brought more this month; not only way more than I ever had before but also way more than I should have. Granted though I got some books for free, thanks to NetGalley and #SFATW, the ones I paid for alone would normally constitute to two or three hauls instead of one.

July August Book Haul

There were a few books that have been on my to-buy list for a while now that I finally got around to buying, a few more I got on a whim, and even more which I brought for YALC.

And yes I have a load of gorgeous new books now but my bank account seriously hates me, especially when you combine this haul with the one from YALC. I’m going on another book buying ban for the next few months, it’ll give me a chance to get through all the new books I brought and re-read some old favourites as well.

Amazon

August Book Haul, #3

As soon as I finished the first Percy Jackson series I went out about brought the second, The Heroes of Olympus. These books look gorgeous sitting on my bookshelves, I just need to find the time to get around to reading them. I loved the first series and if the reviews and hype are anything to go by I’m going to love this second series just as much.

August Book Haul, #4

Of course when I discovered there was an Alice in Wonderland retelling out there I hadn’t read I had to go out and buy it, luckily both books had just been released so I didn’t have to wait for Red Queen. The Spinster Club books are two I brought when I saw Holly Bourne was going to be at YALC, I haven’t read them yet but any excuse to pick them up really.

It should come as a surprise to no one to see The Cursed Child on my haul this month, I’ve had it pre-ordered since it was available on Amazon and was counting down the days until it’s release. The play was brilliant beyond words so I can’t wait to read the book and relive the experience of seeing it on stage.

Waterstones

August Book Haul, #5

The majority of these books I brought for YALC. I’ve been meaning to get around to The Next Together for a while now, and like with The Spinster Club books once I saw Lauren James was appearing at YALC it was any excuse to pick up this book. I’ve heard amazing things about all of Patrick Ness’s books, especially the Chaos Walking series, and the books by him I’ve read so far I’ve loved so I can’t wait to get around to these. The Song of Achilles was a whim purchase for me, after reading and loving the book so much I had to go out and buy it right away.

August Recap, #4

The Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series is one that’s been on my Kindle for  a long time now and on my to-read list for an even longer time. With the movie coming out in September it seemed like the perfect time to start the series, so of course I went out and brought all three books of the trilogy from Waterstones.

Fairy Loot

August Book Haul, #2

If saying ‘I love you’ meant death, would you still say it?

The Wilted Rose, of faery-tale and folklore, is a pirate ship filled with unfortunate souls-each forbidden to love. One such soul is Valencia ‘Lennie’ Roux. Raised in a brothel and an heir to a curse; Lennie never expected to pique the interest of any man. Yet with the arrival of vivid-eyed Nathaniel, she is torn between wanting to know him better and fearing what that knowledge would mean.

With Nathaniel bringing the crew’s total to six, the Wilted Rose sets off in search of the remaining two heirs. They hope that in reuniting, they will convince the faery Sorceress responsible for the curse, to end it. However lurking beneath the water is a long standing enemy of the Wilted Rose; who is determined to thwart their quest and bring down its leaders.

Together the eight heirs fight for survival, friendship and love.

The first in a page-turning young adult fantasy series perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.

In a land governed by the cruel Frostblood ruling class, seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has spent most of her life hiding her ability to manipulate heat and light—until the day the soldiers come to raid her village and kill her mother. Ruby vows revenge on the tyrannous Frost King responsible for the massacre of her people.

But Ruby’s powers are unpredictable…and so are the feelings she has for Arcus, the scarred, mysterious Frostblood warrior who shares her goal to kill the Frost King, albeit for his own reasons. When Ruby is captured by the Frost King’s men, she’s taken right into the heart of the enemy. Now she only has one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who took everything from her—and in doing so, she must unleash the powers she’s spent her whole life withholding.

Frostblood is set in world where flame and ice are mortal enemies—but together create a power that could change everything.

Destined to destroy empires, Mia Covere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Six years later, the child raised in shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day that she lost everything.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and demons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Red Church is no Hogwarts, but Mia is no ordinary student.

The shadows love her. And they drink her fear.

NetGalley eARCs

August Book Haul, #1

I can’t wait to get started on Stealing Snow and When the Moon Was Ours. Both are two highly anticipated releases for me for this year and they both sound amazing so I was thrilled when I was approved for their ARCs by NetGalley. And I Darken was a book I saw great reviews for, and while it wasn’t quite what I expected it was still a brilliant read and a series I can’t wait to continue when the second book is released.

Souvenirs from Across the World is an original feature created by Marie at Drizzle and Hurricane Books.

Souvenirs From Across The World is an original idea created for all book bloggers from all around the world, but is not limited to it. If it’s mainly created for book bloggers because of a possibility to get books as a gift, every blogger can participate.

This feature was created to get to know each other a bit better, especially where we are all from, share a bit of our countries, cities, cultures, traditions, writers, authors. The main goal of Souvenirs From Across The World is to create a link between all bloggers, from everywhere, and to share a bit of the diversity that makes everyone unique on the blogosphere.

It sounded amazing, and I loved the idea of getting to know other bloggers from all over the world so of course I immediately signed up. I was paired with Donna at ChocolatenWaffles’ Blog who lives in Bordeaux in France; a city I’ve never been to but after receiving her gift I feel I need to visit sometime soon.

Here is the stunning international bestseller in the tradition of Watership Down but with a dark, original twist. Unique, daring, and unforgettable, it tells the story of an ordinary family who accidentally threaten the security of a hidden civilization as intelligent as our own—a colony of ants determined to survive at any cost….

Jonathan Wells and his young family have come to the Paris flat at 3, rue des Sybarites through the bequest of his eccentric late uncle Edmond. Inheriting the dusty apartment, the Wells family are left with only one warning: Never go down into the cellar.

But when the family dog disappears down the basement steps, Jonathan follows—and soon his wife, his son, and various would-be rescuers vanish into its mysterious depths.

Meanwhile, in a pine stump in a nearby park, a vast civilization is in turmoil. Here a young female from the russet ant nation of Bel-o-kan learns that a strange new weapon has been killing off her comrades. To find out why, she enlists the help of a warrior ant, and the two set off on separate journeys into a harsh and violent world. It is a world where death takes many forms—savage birds and voracious lizards, warlike dwarf ants and rapacious termites, poisonous beetles and, most bizarre of all, the swift, murderous, giant guardians of the edge of the world: cars.

Yet the end of the female’s desperate quest will be the eerie secret in the cellar at 3, rue des Sybarites—a mystery she must solve in order to fulfil her special destiny as the new queen of her own great empire. But to do so she must first make unthinkable communion with the most barbaric creatures of all.

Empire of the Ants is a brilliant evocation of a hidden civilization as complex as our own and far more ancient. It is a fascinating realm where boats are built of leaves and greenflies are domesticated and milked like cows, where citizens lock antennae in “absolute communication” and fight wars with precisely coordinated armies using sprays of glue and acids that can dissolve a snail. Not since Watership Down has a novel so vividly captured the lives and struggles of a fellow species and the valuable lessons they have to teach us.

The gifts I received were all wonderful, not pictured are the chocolates which I started and finished eating before having an opportunity to take any photos. I can’t wait to get started on the book I received, and the Bordeaux guide book will come in very handy when I make my trip there sometime in the future.

There was a recipe included for Canelés de Bordeaux which I’ve never tried before, but I love baking so I will be attempting that recipe very soon, hopefully they’ll taste as good as they sound! I am also very pleased with my Bordeaux tote bag, now we have a plastic carrier bag tax in England I need all the tote bags I can get my hands on.

I had a lot of fun opening my package and discovering all the goodies inside, it was like Christmas come early. Donna did an amazing job finding everything she sent to me, and I hope she enjoyed everything I sent her just as much. I will definitely be taking part in SFATW again soon, it’s next on just before Christmas with subscriptions opening at the beginning of October, but you can check out Marie’s blog for more information on that.

So I’m assuming you can see, especially when paired with my YALC book haul, why I’m putting myself on a book buying ban until the end of the year. Granted I still have a few pre-orders I’m waiting for, and I’ll still keep subscripting to the Fairy Loot boxes each month but no other books will be brought until I can stick to a budget.

  1. Ahhhhhh 😍😍😍 So many pretty books!!! I feel like I haven’t gone on a book buying spree in so long. I love seeing the Heroes of Olympus books on here! I can’t wait for you to read those 😊 I really want physical copies of Miss Peregrines because I only have them on my Kindle. I want to read the Holly Bourne books too! And your SFATW gifts and Fairyloot boxes look so gorgeous!!

I’ll definitely be interested to see your review for Stealing Snow.

    1. Yep, I’m very pleased with the books I got this month!
I can’t wait to read them either, and they look so pretty on my bookshelves with the first Percy Jackson series. Now I just need to complete my collection of Rick Riordan’s books.
I had the Miss Peregrine’s trilogy on my Kindle as well but had to buy the books in paperback as well, I couldn’t resist, and the same with Holly Bourne’s books too.
I loved receiving my Fairy Loot and SFATW boxes, kind of like early Christmas presents and I was thrilled with everything in them.
I still need to read Stealing Snow actually, but hopefully by the end of this month at least I’ll have a review up! 😀

  2. I really can’t wait for you to read The Heroes of Olympus – I really want to know what you will think of them! 😀 Same with The Chaos Walking Trilogy – both of them are my favourites!
The Fairy Loot boxes look sooo amazing! I really want to get one for myself. But I really can’t afford to pay for both the box and the shipping…so that’s not going to happen any time soon. I’ll just enjoy seeing what other people are getting in them!

    1. Neither can I, and I need to get around to them soon as well, hopefully they’ll find their way onto my September TBR list! I’ve heard so many amazing things about the Chaos Walking series so I’m excited to started that one as well.
Fairy loot is amazing, yeah it can be expensive but in my opinion well worth it, it would be great if you manage to get a box one day but if not I’ll be posting pictures of what is in each one! 😀

  3. What a gorgeous book haul! 😍

You sound like me with the book buying ban. I have had zero control lately and need to slow myself down lol. I also have an ARC of When The Moon Was Ours that I won in a giveaway. I’m excited to read it and can’t wait to see what you end up thinking of it as well! 😊

    1. Thanks so much Melissa!
Yeah a completel book buying ban would not work for me, not with all the amazing new releases coming out later this year, but like you said I need to slow down and stick to my budget.
I can’t wait to get started on When the Moon Was Ours. It sounds really good so I hope it lives up to both our expectations! 😀

      1. Me either. I’ve tried complete book buying bans and I always never stick to them. But after this month I think I’m going to try to stop buying so many extra books that I won’t immediately read and just buy the ones I know I’ll read soon. 😂

I can’t wait either and I hope so too! 😊

      2. No I never manage to either, I guess there’s always going to be something released that you have to buy immediately, I feel I would be setting myself up to fail if I went on a complete book buying ban.
That’s what I’m doing, at least until the new year, I need to get my spending under control! 🙂

  4. Haha, so many books!! My bank account wants to divorce me, I’ve been torturing it for months now. I decided to go on a buying ban (or at least try again) but not before my birthday, I’m not crazy!
I love the books you chose to get, I’ve been wanting to read Am I Normal Yet. I really need to read a Patrick Ness book, they’re everywhere, I feel like I’m missing on something.
I’m so happy you liked the package! I was a little nervous about it! I totally understand the chocolate missing from the picture. I mean, chocolate with Sauterne in it? You cannot possibly resist that. If I listened to myself, I would buy them every day. I’m glad our SFATW was such a success! Here’s to the blogger community, and to us 😀

    1. If my bank account could divorce me we would have already been separated for years by this point! I just have no self control! I’ll wish you luck with your book buying ban but yeah, trying to not buy any books over your birthday would just not work would it?
I’ve heard great things about Am I Normal Yet, and with all of Patrick Ness’s books so I have very high hopes for both!
I LOVED the package you sent me, it was like a Christmas present to myself I could open in August! 😀 Chocolate does not last long in my house, and both the chocolates you sent me were so gorgeous they were gone in pretty much an instant! I’m kind of feeling the need to make a trip to Bordeaux just so I can buy more!

      1. I love Summer Christmases now 😀
Haha, there are so many things to eat in Bordeaux (and drink according to the wine lovers) that you’d need to stay for a month!

    1. Thanks so much! I got a lot of books this month but I’m really pleased with the ones I do have now! The Heroes of Olympus series is right at the top of my to-read list now! I read the Percy Jackson books back in June so it’s about time I got started on the second series I think! 🙂

  5. This was such a fantastic post, and you bought SO many great books! I am so excited to hear your thoughts about all the Patrick Ness’ ones. I want to read A Monster Calls soon, I hope it’s as good as everyone says 🙂
I am SO happy you enjoyed your SFATW package, wow, Donna really went crazy on that one, it’s SO good to see all the fabulous gifts she sent! Thank you so, so much for your contribution, so happy you had such a great time!! ❤

    1. Thanks Marie! Yeah there were a lot of books this month but so many of them are on my most-anticipated to-read list so I can’t wait to get started! I’m hoping to get around to A Monster Calls soon because everyone has said amazing things about it, same with the Chaos Walking trilogy as well actually! Honestly if they’re even close to the other books by Ness I’ve read I’m bound to LOVE them.
Oh it was amazing, and it’s a brilliant feature as well so I can’t wait to take part again! ❤ Getting my package was like getting an early Christmas present to myself, I was so thrilled when it arrived and everything inside was just brilliant! 😀

      1. That’s all right ❤ It's such a brilliant feature and I was so thrilled to be able to take part in it!
I definitely will. I want to start A Monster Calls soon and after that I'll have to get around to the Chaos Walking books as well! 😀

    1. It’s a lot of books for one month but overall I’m pleased with what I got! 🙂
Yeah a few people have said things like that about the Chaos Walking series, but I’ve seen a lot of praise for it as well so hopefully it will end up being one of my favourite series as well! 😀

  6. Great haul, Beth! Totally living vicariously through you right now. 😛

Hope you like A Monster Calls. I haven’t read the Chaos Walking yet but AMC broke me – it was just super sad and beautifully illustrated. And SO jealous that you got the hardback copy for Nevernight… when we were at the book launch the only copies available were the paperback ones and I really wanted the hardback.

RE: eating chocolates before taking photos: Totally what I would do if I ever get my hands on ’em. ❤

    1. Thanks Reg! And yeah this is going to be a haul I’ll have to live vicariously through myself as well! Especially after all the money I spent this month!
I hope so too, it’s a gorgeous addition so hopefully the book itself will be just as wonderful. A Monster Calls is next-ish on my to-read list, and the Chaos Walking books probably close behind!
Ahh that’s a shame about Nevernight, but I’m sure the paperback version is just as gorgeous. 🙂
Yeah, chocolates never last long in my house, and they were really yummy as well so that kind of worked again me a little! ❤

  7. Yeah, I’ll be trying to scrape some $$$ together to subscribe to Fairy Loot. It looks like the subscription box for me! I am jealous of the #SFATW…if I had known, I would’ve totally taken part, because I really want to see what the covers of books from another country look like, and if the content is the same universally. I think you and I, once I have some money (so basically after the semester is over), should do a #SFATW, and I’ll send you a book from here and you send me a book from over there…one of our favorites that we agree on so we can each have a piece of the other’s country! I would love that!! (I mean, if you would want to…::looks down bashfully::)
But it wouldn’t be until at least December, so that gives us time…I know you’re recovering from your convention and I am recovering from the cost of tuition. So around Christmas?
Anyway, love the post, and can’t wait to see your review for Stealing Snow. Been anticipating it! 👍👍👍

    1. I do love Fairy loot and yeah it’s a fair bit expensive, most subscription boxes are though, but it’s worth it. I always love getting that email letting me know my box has been sent, and then it arriving and being able to open it and see what is in the box this month. It’s like birthday presents to myself every month.
Oh I loved SFATW, it’s started up again so if you are interested then you’ll get a chance to take part. You could be matched up with anyone who also takes part but if you want to maybe send another package between the two of us as well we could definitely do something like that! I could find an English book I think you’d enjoy, and send some gifts from England for you as well.
Well yeah, although December isn’t actually that far away it feels like, I mean, we’re pretty much practically in September so not long now until we’ll be getting ready for Christmas!
Thanks, I’m hoping to start Stealing Snow this week although my review won’t be up until closer to its release date. I hope you enjoy it (the book and my review!) 😀

      1. Ehh, I am seeing some negative reviews on Stealing Snow, which makes me wonder.
I really want to do a subscription box, and I think they’re worth it, but my hours have been cut so much at work, that I’m getting like 8/week. School is $997/month! I am going to be super tight.
You’re right, Christmas isn’t too far off. I guess we’ll play it by ear.
Good luck with the book, though. I’m going to wait for your review, and then I’ll know if it’s worth a read or not!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ve been seeing a few negative reviews as well but I’m hopeful I’ll enjoy some aspect of it at least!
Ohh yeah, subscription boxes are expensive, but you can always pick and choose what months you want to buy, it doesn’t have to be an every month thing if money is tight.
Definitely, all too soon it’s gonna be December it feels like.
I’ll be posting it before the release so you’ll be able to see what I think before deciding whether to pick it up or not! 🙂

      3. Well, maybe I can convince my mom or dad to get me a subscription box for Christmas…I would love to do even just one, but I am so broke. School wasn’t covered enough, and parking went up to $200/semester!! Then books were another $150…it just adds up so fast! I can’t wait until I have a career and make more money, you know? No more retail!!
