Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’ve Had on my TBR List Since Before I Started Blogging

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I’ve Had on my TBR List Since Before I Started Blogging.

My to-read list is massive. Even before I started blogging there were books on there I added years previously which I still hadn’t gotten around to.

Then I joined WordPress, saw all the amazing five-star glowing reviews people were writing, and my to-read list just kept growing and growing. Going back for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme and looking at all the books I added way back when before I started my blog I was surprised by how many I’d forgotten were on there, and how many I doubt I’ll ever get around to picking up now.

Top Ten Tuesday #35

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

The only series by Kendare Blake I’ve read so far is the Mortal Gods trilogy. I really enjoyed those books, and I have Three Dark Crowns on my to-read list so I can get started on it as soon as it’s released. However I’ve yet to get started on Anna Dressed in Blood which I added to my TBR list after I finished Ungodly.

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas’s life.

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Honestly this book has been on my TBR list for so long I’m seriously wondering if I’m ever going to get around to it.

I wasn’t free of my past, not yet.

Sydney’s blood is special. That’s because she’s an alchemist—one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets – and human lives. But the last encounter Sydney had with vampires got her in deep trouble with the other alchemists. And now with her allegiances in question, her future is on the line.

When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she’s still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir – the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir – is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill’s guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the unlikeliest of places: a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one.

The Moroi court believe Jill and Sydney will be safe at Amberwood Prep, but threats, distractions, and forbidden romance lurk both outside – and within – the school grounds. Now that they’re in hiding, the drama is only just beginning.

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

While I’ve yet to finished the Legacy series what I’ve read so far I really loved. When I saw Marie Lu had a new series coming out I added it to my TBR list immediately. Now the second book has been released and the third is coming out soon and I still haven’t picked up the first one.

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumoured to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

I added this book to my TBR list right before I started blogging and now that the movie is being released soon I need to read it, and the rest of the trilogy, as soon as possible.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow – impossible though it seems – they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen is one of my all-time favourite contemporary authors, but for some reason I haven’t read any of her new releases that came out after Just Listen. They all sound amazing, I’ve seen great reviews for everyone, and I can’t wait to get started on them myself.

Unlock your heart and the rest will follow.

Ruby is used to taking care of herself.

But now that she’s living with her sister, she’s got her own room, she’s going to a good school, and her future looks bright.

Plus there’s an adorable boy next door.

Can Ruby learn to open her heart and let him in?

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkins

Much like Bloodlines this was a book that had been on my to-read list for so long now I’d almost forgotten it was there. However unlike Bloodlines I’ve seen some amazing reviews for the Mara Dyer trilogy recently and it’s reignited my interested in the series. I’ll definitely be picking it up soon.

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

I really enjoyed Cassandra Clare’s first trilogy when I read it but for some reason I stopped after City of Glass and never picked up The Infernal Devices series or the second Mortal Instruments trilogy. Now though with the release of Lady Midnight, which I have seen so many rave reviews for, I need to go back and jump into the world of the Shadowhunters.

Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length…everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world…and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Talon by Julie Kagawa

The only series by Julie Kagawa I’ve read so far is The Immortal Rules trilogy. I really loved all three books so I added both of Kagawa’s other series to my TBR list. I’ve yet to get started on either one of them despite having had Talon on my Kindle for a good few months now.

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they’re positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon’s newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreud

I added this book to my TBR list a few years ago after my friend read it and gave it a rave review. I’ll admit to not being a huge fan of classics but maybe this re-inspired telling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion will be something I’ll enjoy a little more.

It’s been several generations since a genetic experiment gone wrong caused the Reduction, decimating humanity and giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.

But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret—one that could change their society…or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she’s lost him forever.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, For Darkness Shows the Stars is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.

The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

Is it any surprise to people now when I say fairy tale retellings are some of my all-time favourite books? Back before this book was released I read the blurb and had to add it to my TBR list. Then The Great Hunt was released and I just never got around to picking it up.

When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity knows her duty to the kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger…until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand – ridding the kingdom of the beast – but the princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what books you’ve had on your to-read list from before you started blogging.

  1. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is such a good book! I greatly enjoyed it (the whole trilogy that is). I just love the whole concept of the story. Can’t wait to see what you are going to think of it! 🙂
The Infernal Devices are one of my all time favourite trilogies! I read them before starting The Mortal Instruments, just because they interested me more. And I do love reading about the Victorian time period. 😀

    1. I’m going to start the first book tomorrow. I think after talking about it so much in this post I was inspired to start reading it right away. 🙂 I hope I really enjoy it!
I’ve heard that a lot about The Infernal Devices trilogy, I really love books set in the Victorian era as well so hopefully I’ll feel the same way about these books! 😀

  2. I’ve had Anna Dressed in Blood on my shelves forever!! And I’ve heard really good things about them, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I also have The Young Elites on my shelf and there’s seriously no excuse as to why I haven’t gotten to it because I loved the Legend trilogy and loved Lu’s writing style. Mara Dyer, I am definitely on that boat with you. I’ve had it on my shelf for a while now but I’ve been reading some pretty awesome reviews so maybe I will finally get to it. I’ve read The Infernal Devices and The Great Hunt, I hope you get to them you enjoy them as much as I did. They are pretty great books =) Happy reading my friend!!

    1. I only added it recently but yeah I’m the same I’ve heard great things about the series so I need to get around to it soon-ish!
I still need to finish the Legend series so that will have to be my excuse as to why I haven’t gotten around to The Young Elites yet! But I loved Lu’s writing style as well so I can’t wait to finally get around to both her series again!
Oh it seems like there’s been so much about the Mara Dyer series around lately. I’ve bumped the book up my to-read list a lot because of all the things I’ve been seeing about it!
Same here actually, but given the postive reviews I’ve seen I’m sure to enjoy both! 🙂
      Thanks! 😀

  3. You have NO idea how happy it makes me to see Mara Dyer on that list. Well, I wish you’d read it already, but I am SO happy you’re planning on reading it. That series is extraordinary. The writing is gorgeous, the characters are all so well-fleshed out and definitely all kinds of weird, the story is full of suspense and kind of CRAZY at times, which I love. I am so, so eager for you to read that one 🙂

    1. I’m actually hoping to get around to the Mara Dyer books soon (maybe next month) because I’ve been seeing some amazing things on WordPress about the books so I’ve had to bump them up my to-read list a little! 😀
Honestly the books sound brilliant, and I’ve seen so many positive reviews as well I’m sure I’ll agree with them all!
I’ll be sure to let you know when I start the series, I can let you know as I read what I think of the books! 🙂

  4. I read the first book in Miss Peregrines series, but I disliked it so j didn’t continue with the series! I also DNFed The Young Elites! I think Marie Lu’s writing just isn’t for me because I have struggled with her previous books as well! I also have Clare books on my TBR and Anna Dressed in Blood

    1. Oh that’s a shame, I’ve heard some good things about the series but I guess everyone can’t like the same books right?
I have seen some mixed reviews for The Young Elites but I realy enjoyed her first series so I’m willing to give it a try. 🙂
I’ve been hearing great things about Clare’s books (the ones I haven’t gotten around to) and about Anna Dressed in Blood too so I hope you enjoy both books/series as well! 😀

      1. True, I have heard some mixed opinions about miss peregrines, but it just wasn’t my kind of thing 🙂 I thought the Legend series was ok, but it wasn’t special and I struggled through some of it – I really didn’t get along with The Young Elites, but I hope you do!! I have never actually read a Clare book BUT all that is changing soon because I am being sent the Infernal Devices series and I am so excited!!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’m not sure what to think of it really, guess I’ll have to wait until I’ve read it an can judge for myself!
Admittedly I struggled with the Legend series when I first started it but that was because I was in a slump so I want to go back to it and see if it’s any better the second time around. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it and The Young Elites as well!
Ohh yay! I hope you enjoy it. I’ve heard amazing things about those books even though I haven’t got to that series myself yet! One day soon though! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      3. True!! I wasn’t in a slump or anything, I just struggled with it. I think Marie Lu’s writing just isn’t really my thing … And yep!! Definitely excited for them!!

    1. I’ve loved all the other books by Sarah Dessen that I’ve read so I have very high hopes for Lock and Key now! 🙂
You’re the first person to say that about the Mara Dyer books, everyone else seems to love them but I guess I’ll have to read it myself and see what I think.
      Thanks Hilary! 😀

  5. Yeees for Lock & Key! I love Sarah Dessen and I’ve reread Lock & Key more times than I can count, haha. I love the family relationships in that one and actually thought that it was a bit different from her other works (albeit still staying with her formula).

I’ve also read Bloodlines and wouldn’t reaaally recommend it. I loved Adrian in Vampire Academy but I feel like he’s become such a lovestruck teen in Bloodlines. That, and I don’t really like Sydney as a protagonist. :/

    1. So many people have said similar things about Lock and Key, I may have to bump it up my to-read list a little bit based on all the positive things I’ve heard about this book! I love seeing family dynamics in YA contemporary books as well so this one sounds amazing already! 🙂
Yeah Bloodlines kind of been on my to-read list for so long I’ve lost interest in it. That may change one day but for now it’s destined to stay where it is! I haven’t seen many reviews for it though, not sure if it’s a series that has kind of faded into the background a bit or what?

      1. Hmm, I feel like more people were disappointed by Bloodlines than pleasantly surprised, haha. Maybe that’s why it’s not getting as much hype… and well, six books is a lot, and when there’s not much happening in those books people get bored really easily (and by that I mean I did). 😛

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ll probably be one of them then. I won’t say I think I’ve outgrown the series more like I’ve outgrown my interest in it if that makes sense.
Yep, and when you add the six books in the VA series that came before it’s even more to get through isn’t it! 🙂

      1. You guys usually get movies about a month before we do here. I haven’t bothered to go see any in months. This years selection hasn’t been all that great and definitely not worth spending the money. I also like to stream my TV shows. I almost never watch them live.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. There have been a few good movies released but I know what you mean, lately there haven’t been too many releases that have made me want to go to the cinema.
Yeah same here actually, plus it’s so much easier to watch on my laptop that way! 🙂

  6. Read For Darkness Shows The Stars and then right after, read her other book, Across A Star-Swept Sea. Both are retellings of classics, and both are connected! You’ll love it. I read that one awhile ago, and I wish she’d write some more books!

  7. I literally just finished Lock and Key a few days ago. Haven’t gotten around to writing my review yet, but I thought it was a very moving read. I’ve also only read the first Miss Peregrine book so far, but I really enjoyed it too. Great list 🙂

  8. The Infernal Devices is an incredible trilogy, as is the second half of The Mortal Instruments. I think you would really love TID. The character’s are incredible and unforgettable. Cassandra Clare’s books in general are some of my all time favorites! I hope you do end up picking up the rest of her Shadowhunters’ books one day. I’d love to see what you end up thinking of them! Great post! 😃

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I think if the Infernal Devices and the second half of The Mortal Instruments are as good as the first half I bound to love them, plus I’ve yet to see a bad review for Lady Midnight either so I can’t wait to get started!
Cassandra Clare’s books are ones I’m hoping to get around to before the year is up but honestly given the state of my to-read list you never know! I’ll definitely be posting reviews when I have read them though! 😀 And thanks! 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Lady Midnight was really good! After waiting the two years wait between City of Heavenly Fire and that I read it in a day and loved it. I’m a little anxious for the next one because of some things I’ve seen, but knowing Cassandra Clare it’ll be incredible too.

I know that feeling! I think all of our TBRs are crazy out of control. Books get published faster than we can read them. 😂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Wow, that’s definitely saying something considering how long the book is as well! Hopefully I’ll have at least gotten up to date and finished Lady Midnight by the time the second book is released! Then I can join in the hype! 😀
Yep, and there’s always new books being released so always something new out there to read! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yep, I think it was because I was so excited I couldn’t put it down. I feel like that’s going to be me when The Song Rising releases, I’m going to binge it in a day and then cry until the next book is released. 😂

Exactly! It’s nice kind of nice knowing we’ll probably never run out of books to read though. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Oh I am already planning on doing that when The Song Rising is released! I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for that book and I just need to know what happens next! 😀
I don’t know what I’d do if I ran out of books to read. The thought is just unimaginable! 🙂

      5. Same! The second I get my hands on that book I’m going into reading mode where I avoid the internet and my phone until I finish it.

Me either. I imagine my life would be very boring with out books and I wouldn’t have anything to blog about. 🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I want it right this second but I’ll have to settle for getting my hands on it as soon as it’s released and locking myself away until I’ve finished it!
I imagine if I didn’t have books to read I wouldn’t have started blogging in the first place, because like you said what would I have to blog about?

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Same! If only we could get lucky enough to get our hands on ARCs. That would be amazing! I have to admit I hope NetGalley has it at some point, like they did with TMO before it released, just so I can try for it lol.

True, I probably wouldn’t have either.

        Liked by 1 person

  9. Great post! Clare’s The Infernal Devices is some of her best work, though I do think the Lady Midnight series may surpass it if all the books are as good as the first. Hope you decide to pick up TID. It’s very, very good. The characters were so well fleshed-out and endearing.

  10. Miss Peregrine’s and Mara Dyer are both great books! Although I haven’t read the last books in either trilogy, so I can’t speak about the whole series, I really enjoyed the first two books in both. 🙂
