The Book Courtship Tag

Way back when in January I was tagged for the first time to complete The Book Courtship Tag. Since then I’ve read way more books, fell in love with brand new series and authors, and when I was tagged again I thought ‘why not?’ There are plenty of books I love – plenty of books I picked up because of the cover or that kept me up all night – so many that I could do this tag ten, twenty, thirty more times and still have new answers for each of the questions.

The Book Courtship Tag

I was tagged by Jenna at Fictional Neverland. Thank you so much for the tag Jenna; everyone else should definitely check out her original post and while you’re there her blog as well.

Phase 1: Initial Attraction
A book that you bought because of the cover?

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Granted the blurb for A Thousand Pieces of You sounded amazing as well. With multiverse travel and a quest for revenge that spans across different universes it had all the makings of a book I knew I’d love. And I did love it. I’m eagerly awaiting to release of the third book but I already know it’s going to be incredible, the same way the covers for this series are beyond gorgeous.

A Thousand Pieces of You

Phase 2: First Impressions
A book that you got because of the summary?

The Novice by Taran Matharu

So this one is cheating a little. Although the blurb for this book does sound brilliant, and it’s the kind of book I know I’m really going to enjoy as well, the thing that inspired me to pick this book up was hearing the author talk at YALC. Taran Matharu was at one of panels on the first day and everything that was said about The Novice made me want to run out and grab a copy for myself; so that’s exactly what I did.

The Novice

When blacksmith apprentice Fletcher discovers that he has the ability to summon demons from another world, he travels to Adept Military Academy. There the gifted are trained in the art of summoning. Fletcher is put through gruelling training as a battlemage to fight in the Hominum Empire’s war against orcs. He must tread carefully while training alongside children of powerful nobles. The power hungry, those seeking alliances, and the fear of betrayal surround him. Fletcher finds himself caught in the middle of powerful forces, with only his demon Ignatius for help.

As the pieces on the board manoeuvre for supremacy, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie. The fate of an empire is in his hands. The Novice is the first in a trilogy about Fletcher, his demon Ignatius, and the war against the Orcs.

Phase 3: Sweet Talk
A book with great writing?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

While I’m not sure the phase ‘sweet talk’ is one that applies to this book, ‘great writing’ really is. Madeline Miller’s knowledge of the Trojan War and the original Greek myth of Achilles and Patroclus shrines through in her writing. This book is amazing; it’s full of memorable quotes, stand-out characters, and a heartbreaking romance story that will tear you to pieces when it ends.

The Song of Achilles

Odysseus inclines his head. “True. But fame is a strange thing. Some men gain glory after they die, while others fade. What is admired in one generation is abhorred in another.” He spread his broad hands. “We cannot say who will survive the holocaust of memory. Who knows?” He smiles. “Perhaps one day even I will be famous. Perhaps more famous than you.”

Phase 4: First Date
A first book of a series which made you want to pick up the rest of the series?

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

Although I haven’t gotten my hands on Blood for Blood yet I have pre-ordered it. After the way Wolf by Wolf ended I have a few theories and hopes for what I think will happen in the second book—I mainly want to see more of Yael, Felix and Luka, and potentially more of Adele herself as well. Granted I haven’t had to wait as some people have but it’s still been a long time coming for the second book to be released.

Wolf by Wolf

Phase 5: Late Night Phone Calls
A book that kept you up all night?

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

The beginning of this book was a little slow while the world, the characters and their unique situations were set up, but when the pacing started to pick up towards the end I couldn’t put this book down. I was flicking through the pages faster than ever, desperate to find out what happened next to Mia and the other acolytes at the Red Church.

Nevernight

Phase 6: Always on my mind
A book you could not stop thinking about?

More Than This by Patrick Ness

From the very first page I had no clue what was going on in this book, but I had tons of theories. Every time one was proved wrong another five had appeared to take their place. This book was unforgettable; the whole time I was reading it I was thinking about how it would end and even after the ending, which was frustratingly left open, I was still thinking about what happened to Seth.

More Than This

Phase 7: Getting Physical
A book which you love the way it feels?

Flawed by Cecelia Ahern

This was the book in my Owl Crate box for the Dystopian theme a few months back. I got the hardcover edition and it is definitely one of the more gorgeous books currently sitting on my bookshelves. If the story inside is as good as the appearance of the book outside then it’s going to be one of my favourites.

Flawed

You will be punished…

Celestine North lives a perfect life. She’s a model daughter and sister, she’s well-liked by her classmates and teachers, and she’s dating the impossibly charming Art Crevan.

But then Celestine encounters a situation where she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces life-changing repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found flawed.

In her breathtaking young adult debut, bestselling author Cecelia Ahern depicts a society where perfection is paramount and flaws lead to punishment. And where one young woman decides to take a stand that could cost her everything.

Phase 8: Meeting the parents
A book which you would recommend to your family and friends?

Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

If you’ve been following my blog for a while now then chances are you know how obsessed I am with V.E. Schwab’s books, in particular the Shades of Magic series. I feel like I have recommended her work to anyone and everyone I’ve come across, and I will continue to do so until everyone is as obsessed with the series as I am.

Shades of Magic

So if anyone out there hasn’t already, put A Darker Shade of Magic on your to-read list. You won’t regret it.

Phase 9: Thinking about the future
A book or series you know you will re read many times in the future?

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

This was one of my most anticipated releases of this year and, although it’s received some mixed reviews, for me it more than lived up to the hype. Everything about this book – the plot, the world-building, the characters – was unforgettable. As soon as I reached the last page I wanted to pick up The Star-Touched Queen and read it all over again from the very beginning.

The Star-Touched Queen

Phase 10: Share the love
Who do you tag?

And if there’s anyone else out there who wants to take part, consider yourself tagged. Just send me a link to your post in the comments so I can see what your answers are.

  1. I really want to read The Song of Achilles – I have been hearing nothing but amazing things about it! Though I don’t know when that will actually happen, as I don’t even own the book. I do hope to get my hands on it some time soon. 🙂
I’m going to be reading Wolf by Wolf next week. And I’m super exited about it, especially since I’m buddy reading it with a friend. It’s going to be amazing!
The covers for the Shades of Magic series are gorgeous! ❤ Especially when I see them lined up next to each other. (I seriously NEED to read that series!)
I agree with you on The Star-Touched Queen! As soon as I finished the book I wanted to read it again. (And I kind of did – I reread some of my favourite moments and dialogue.) I can see myself rereading that book many times in the future! 🙂

    1. I’m definitely one of the people saying amazing things about The Song of Achilles. It’s a brilliant book so when you do get around to it I’m sure you’ll love it! 😀
Ohh I really hope you love Wolf by Wolf, it’s an amazing story as well. I reckon it will be a great experience buddy reading it too!
I know, it’s too bad I have the English version which are nice but not on the same level you know? Maybe one day I’ll buy the American editions as well! I’d also highly recommend the series, it’s my all-time favourite so I literally recommend it to everyone! 😀
It’s a brilliant book isn’t it? I can’t wait for the companion novel to be released, if it’s anything like The Star-Touched Queen it’s going to be just amazing. I kind of want to read The Star-Touched Queen soon, I maybe have to before this year is over! 😀

      1. Hahaha, I hope that I will enjoy it! Just from the summary it sounds like something I would like, so fingers crossed! 😀
I know what you mean! I have the first book in the English edition, so I’m going to get the rest of the series in those editions as well. They are pretty, but the American ones are just a bit better! Well, as it’s your all time favourite it justifies you buying it in another edition! 😉 (I think I might end up doing that as well, of course after I actually read the books.)
I’ll definitely read The Star-Touched Queen before the companion novel comes out – which can’t be soon enough! 😀

      2. The summary made it sound like something I’d enjoy as well and obviously it didn’t lead me wrong.
Yeah I really really wish they’d kept the US covers for the English editions, I think they look so much prettier you know? And so unique as well.
It definitely does, and I’m not going to buy every edition out there, just the American ones!
No it definitely can’t, but we still have a long way to go What I wouldn’t give for a time machine! 🙂

  2. Aaah thanks Beth 😙 I’m so glad you tagged me in this, I’ve been wanting to do it for forever now !
And I also love your answers, A thousand pieces of you is definitely one of the most gorgeous books out there. Shades of Magic is my second favorite series of all times after Harry Potter so that’s how much I love it haha, Wolf by Wolf is waaay up there too.
    Great answers 😊

    1. That’s all right, and I hope you have fun with this tag I can’t wait to see your answers for it either!
Yeah A Thousand Pieces of You looks so pretty on my bookshelves, I actually think Shades of Magic is my favourite YA series (Harry Potter is just in a completely different category because there’s nothing that can beat it).
God I loved Wolf by Wolf, I need to next book to be released right this second so I can get my hands on it.
      Thanks! 😀

  3. Thank you for the tag Beth! I can’t wait to get started on this tag, as it is just so cute, and looks like so much fun 🙂

A Thousand Pieces of You really does have a stunning cover, and after reading review after review, I’m only more excited to read it. This is a book I want to buy, because I want it on my shelf ASAP! The Song of Achilles also sounds like a phenomenal read, and I love books that are filled with quote potential and beautiful writing is the absolute “maker” of a book.

V.E Schwabb is an author that you should recommend to anybody. She’s my go to author to recommend, and I love her writing so much. I love what you did with this tag, and had so much fun reading! Thanks again for the tag 🙂

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have fun with this tag, I definitely did the two times I’ve done it so far!
God yes, for me A Thousand Pieces of You is my ultimate cover buy and it’s honestly so gorgeous even if I didn’t enjoy the book I still wouldn’t regret buying it. (Luckily the book itself was amazing too) I would highly HIGHLY recommend The Song of Achilles because it is beautiful and heartbreaking and just an amazing story, you seriously need to read it ASAP!
Oh don’t worry I am going to continue recommending her to everybody. I may have it written on my tombstone as well so even after I’m dead I can still recommend the books to people from the beyond! 🙂
That’s all right, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one!

  4. I felt the same way about More Than This! I had so many different theories about how it would end, but the actual ending was nothing like any of my predictions. I loved how suspenseful and plot-twisty the story was! It was the first Patrick Ness book I ever read, and it certainly won’t be the last!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It was a brilliant book wasn’t it? And I love that Patrick Ness wrote it in a way as well that allowed everyone to come up with all these theories as to what was actually happening. Too bad none of ours were correct but I guess that’s the fun of reading isn’t it?
More Than This was the second Ness book I picked up bit yeah it definitely isn’t my last, and I can’t wait to start the rest of his books! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀
Even now I’m still not over that ending! I actually want to go back and re-read it even though I just finished it for the first time a month ago!
Oh I have the first two on my bookshelves and they look sooo pretty! I just need the third now to complete my collection! 😀

  5. Thank you so much for the tagged Beth!! 😃
I loved reading your answers and I spy so many books I still need to read. A Thousand Pieces of You was a cover read for me (since I checked it out from the library). I went into it without even reading the synopsis and ended up loving it. I still have to read the second one though. 🙈

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have fun with this one and I’m glad you enjoyed reading my answers as well.
Luckily A Thousand Pieces of You was one I really enjoyed as well, granted I did check out the blurb once I saw the cover. The second book is just as amazing as well, and I can’t wait for the release of the third one either! I need to get my hands on it like right this second! 😀

      1. I’m sure I will! It seems like a fun tag. 😊

I need to get my hands on the second one! I see a future trip to the used bookstore coming soon. I haven’t been in so long and there are a lot of books I want to search for, but at the same time I don’t want to spend a ton. 😂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh I know that feeling, but I always spend a ton on books so I’ve just got the hang of dealing with that. The second book is really good, and the third is coming out soon as well so you won’t have to wait as long for that one to be released which is always a good thing! 😀

  6. I REALLY like this tag, and I liked every book you picked. I am waiting on Flawed (requested it on NetGalley and got declined so I didn’t want to read it out of a self-imposed boycott, but got over it), and I am finally close on the waiting list. Oh, Overdrive, why do you take so long?
We have such a similar taste in books that it’s almost scary…are you my evil twin? (Or good twin..it’s quite possible that I am the evil one)
    😜

    1. Thanks so much, all these books are favourites of mine. Well I can’t say for sure about Flawed as I haven’t read it yet but I’m sure it’s amazing as well.
Oh I sometimes feel that way but like you I get over it pretty quickly. God I imagine the wait for some library books can be insane.
Yeah I was gonna say why do I get the label of the evil twin? But who knows, maybe I am! XD

  7. Yes! The Song of Achilles made it on the list! The writing is amazing! I second that! And Nevernight also had me up until 2am some nights. Great book! I feel like I’m a broken record with this but I still need to read ADSOM. It’s been on my kindle for months. 😂 Everyone in the world has read it but me. My list never ends. Awesome answers! I also like the feel of the cover of Flawed. It’s still in the OwlCrate box, just like the rest of the books they sent me. I also hope the story is just as good. I read a not so great review of it the other day, which reminded me I had the book. I swear I just like collecting subscription boxes. 🙈

    1. Yeah I knew I had to put The Song of Achilles on here somewhere, seemed appropriate for a Book Courtship Tag considering how much I loved the book. And yeah it was the same with Nevernight for me, I kept telling myself one more chapter and before I knew it I should have gone to sleep hours ago.
You can be my daily person I remind then, you should definitely read ADSOM as soon as possible. It is beyond brilliant so I think you’ll really love it!
It’s the dust jacket isn’t it? Or at least it was for me, it’s just so different from all the other hardcover books I have on my shelves and I just love it.
I try and sort through my boxes when I arrive but I know the feeling, love collecting subscription boxes!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Haha! Beth’s reminder service to read ADDOM. 😉 I have it on Kindle, but I can imagine the hardback cover is awesome. I pulled out all of my subscription boxes last night. I now need to shelve the books and organize my little goodies.

      2. If I had any talent creating apps I’d create one that would do just that, send reminders for people when they really need to read a book!
That’ll be nice, you’ll get to sort through them all and in a way it will be like when you first got them again! 😀
