I love reading sci-fi books, not as much as fantasy admittedly but it’s still up there. However I did only recently discover and fall in love with the genre myself so there aren’t many sci-fi books that I’ve really loved; I’ve got a lot more on my to-read list which sound amazing and that I can’t wait to get started on. And that’s what my list is this week; a few books which are perfect for taking that first step into the world of YA sci-fi, and a few which I haven’t read but that I’ve heard nothing but great things about.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

I feel like this book, the whole series actually, is a heavy one. Red Rising is not an easy read, it is cruel and brutal and doesn’t shy away from any of the hardships the characters face, but it’s also brilliant. While the first book is a little slow to start if you can get past that you’re in for a real treat because the series just gets better and better.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

This was the book that I would have to say not only made me fall in love with the sci-fi genre but made me fall in love with Amie Kaufman’s writing style. The Starbound trilogy focuses on three different couples; each story is capable of standing on its own but in the third book they all come together, the characters and the story arc, to form an explosive finale.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

After reading the Starbound series I discovered Amie Kaufman had a new sci-fi trilogy coming out, this time writing with Jay Kristoff. Of course that was more than enough to convince me I needed to pick up Illuminae at some point. As beautiful as the format of the book is the story itself is just as amazing, and I can’t wait to get started on the second book in the series.

Winter by Marissa Meyer

The Lunar Chronicles is one of my all-time favourite series and given that the last book, Winter, is set on the moon it had to make my list this week. The whole series has plenty of sci-fi influences; androids and cyborgs, spaceships and alien races, but it’s only the last book that is set primarily in space.

Starflight by Melissa Landers

Admittedly I picked this book up mainly because of the gorgeous cover and while it wasn’t the best sci-fi book I’ve read to date it’s definitely up there. I really enjoyed the story and getting to know all the characters aboard the Banshee, and now I’m excited to get my hands on the second book in the series.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This is a book I haven’t gotten around to yet but that I’ve heard great things about. It’s been on my to-read list for ages and one day I will get around to reading Across the Universe and the rest of the series. I’m sure when I do I’ll enjoy it just as much as a lot of people seem to.

Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis

I feel it’s well-known by now that I love fairytale retellings, so when I heard about a sci-fi, fairytale retelling of Snow White I had to pick it up. This is a book I really need to reread soon because I don’t remember much about what happened other than the fact that I really enjoyed it.

Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder

If These Broken Stars was the first book to make me fall in love with sci-fi genre than Inside Out was the very first sci-fi book I read. Granted I didn’t enjoy it as much as her Poison Study books but it was still a great story with some amazing characters. I definitely need to get around to re-reading this one again soon.

Way Down Dark by James Smythe

This was a book, a series, and an author I discovered while at YALC in July. James Smythe was part of the YA in Space panel and hearing what he had to say about the Australia Trilogy made me want to read it myself.  Way Down Dark was one of the many books I brought at YALC and I can’t wait to get started on it.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

After I saw a couple of glowing five-star reviews for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and after I read the blurb a little later, I knew I had to get my hands on this book. I haven’t read it yet, it’s somewhere on my mile-long to-read list, but if the great reviews are anything go by I know I’m going to love it.
