Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books with an … Setting

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books with an … Setting.

Out of this World.

I love reading sci-fi books, not as much as fantasy admittedly but it’s still up there. However I did only recently discover and fall in love with the genre myself so there aren’t many sci-fi books that I’ve really loved; I’ve got a lot more on my to-read list which sound amazing and that I can’t wait to get started on. And that’s what my list is this week; a few books which are perfect for taking that first step into the world of YA sci-fi, and a few which I haven’t read but that I’ve heard nothing but great things about.

Top Ten Tuesday #34

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

I feel like this book, the whole series actually, is a heavy one. Red Rising is not an easy read, it is cruel and brutal and doesn’t shy away from any of the hardships the characters face, but it’s also brilliant. While the first book is a little slow to start if you can get past that you’re in for a real treat because the series just gets better and better.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

This was the book that I would have to say not only made me fall in love with the sci-fi genre but made me fall in love with Amie Kaufman’s writing style. The Starbound trilogy focuses on three different couples; each story is capable of standing on its own but in the third book they all come together, the characters and the story arc, to form an explosive finale.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

After reading the Starbound series I discovered Amie Kaufman had a new sci-fi trilogy coming out, this time writing with Jay Kristoff. Of course that was more than enough to convince me I needed to pick up Illuminae at some point. As beautiful as the format of the book is the story itself is just as amazing, and I can’t wait to get started on the second book in the series.

Winter by Marissa Meyer

The Lunar Chronicles is one of my all-time favourite series and given that the last book, Winter, is set on the moon it had to make my list this week. The whole series has plenty of sci-fi influences; androids and cyborgs, spaceships and alien races, but it’s only the last book that is set primarily in space.

Starflight by Melissa Landers

Admittedly I picked this book up mainly because of the gorgeous cover and while it wasn’t the best sci-fi book I’ve read to date it’s definitely up there. I really enjoyed the story and getting to know all the characters aboard the Banshee, and now I’m excited to get my hands on the second book in the series.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This is a book I haven’t gotten around to yet but that I’ve heard great things about. It’s been on my to-read list for ages and one day I will get around to reading Across the Universe and the rest of the series. I’m sure when I do I’ll enjoy it just as much as a lot of people seem to.

Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis

I feel it’s well-known by now that I love fairytale retellings, so when I heard about a sci-fi, fairytale retelling of Snow White I had to pick it up. This is a book I really need to reread soon because I don’t remember much about what happened other than the fact that I really enjoyed it.

Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder

If These Broken Stars was the first book to make me fall in love with sci-fi genre than Inside Out was the very first sci-fi book I read. Granted I didn’t enjoy it as much as her Poison Study books but it was still a great story with some amazing characters. I definitely need to get around to re-reading this one again soon.

Way Down Dark by James Smythe

This was a book, a series, and an author I discovered while at YALC in July. James Smythe was part of the YA in Space panel and hearing what he had to say about the Australia Trilogy made me want to read it myself.  Way Down Dark was one of the many books I brought at YALC and I can’t wait to get started on it.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

After I saw a couple of glowing five-star reviews for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and after I read the blurb a little later, I knew I had to get my hands on this book. I haven’t read it yet, it’s somewhere on my mile-long to-read list, but if the great reviews are anything go by I know I’m going to love it.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or what some of your favourite books are set in space.

  1. I felt the same way about Starflight. I loved the cover and there was a lot of hype, so I bough it. It wasn’t the best, but it was still good. Winter/The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favorites as well and I really want to check out Stitching Snow. Great list! 🙂

  2. I haven’t read any of these books, but the descriptions you provide provide evidence as to why these are all very deserving to be on this list. I really want to read the Lunar Chronicles, as I’ve only heard amazing things about it!

    1. I would highly recommend every book I featured on my list this week, even the ones I haven’t read yet because from what I’ve heard of them they’re amazing too!
Oh you should definitely DEFINITELY read The Lunar Chronicles series, it’s the best of the best! 😀

    1. Everyone seems to be raving about it. I have high hopes but I think it’s going to be one of those books that lives up to my expectations you know.
Also not sure if I mentioned this in my post but my copy of Long Way was brought for me for my birthday by one of my friends as well! 🙂

      1. I’ll get to Winter soon, well, once I have read Cress, and Red Rising is on my to-buy-VERY-SOON list, I can’t wait! I’m a bit unsure about Illuminae because of the special aspect of the book, though it sounds really good, and I want to try it out, I’m scared to be disappointed…

      2. Of course, definitely read Cress first, if not you’ll be very confused by some of the things that happen in Winter! 😀 I’m really excited for you to read Red Rising, I hope you love it!
Illuminae is a book I loved so I’d recommend it for that reason alone, but I understand why you’re a bit hesitant about it as well. I was when I saw the format of the book but in the end it just added to my enjoyment of the story! 🙂

    1. Thanks Paige. Oh yes I have a weakness for gorgeous covers and these are definitely some of my favourites. I haven’t read Way Down Dark and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet myself yet but I’ve heard amazing things about them so I’d still recommend them! 😀
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 🙂

    1. Maybe you could save it until Gemina is released, loads of people are desperate for that book so the wait is not something I would recommend! I didn’t read it as soon as it was released either, I let the hype die down a bit before picking it up but I really loved it, the format of the book was just so amazing and unique it just added to my enjoyment of the story! 😀

  3. It’s actually good to hear that Red Rising doesn’t shy away from being brutal to its characters – I feel like it raises the stakes and is the sign of a writer who doesn’t coddle his characters.

I’ve actually read Across the Universe and really liked it! Though it was definitely quite romance-focused, the book itself reminded me of one of my favourite manga series (7 Seeds), which is about the world ending and the human race surviving after that. Across the Universe gets worse progressively though, so I think the first book was best for me. 😛

    1. Oh if there’s one thing Red Rising has in spades its harshness towards the characters. At times you will honestly fear for their lives because you never know who is going to survive and who is going to die. But it’s an amazing series, I say having not yet started the last book in the trilogy 🙂
I don’t mind books that are more romance focused at times, so hopefully I’ll enjoy Across the Universe as well. I haven’t really read any manga but maybe if I enjoy Across the Universe I could check out 7 Seeds, I need to read more sci-fi books! 🙂

      1. That sounds gooood. This might sound sadistic but I actually really love it when authors put their characters through a lot. 😛

Tbh I don’t know if you’d like 7 Seeds… I read quite a lot of manga and I’d say that the drawing style for that one is not for everyone, though the story is amazing. Basically these people wake up and apparently they’ve been sent thousands of years into the future by scientists so they could continue the human race. The earth has essentially “died” and is now very much man vs. nature (and sometimes man vs. man). OK I’m gonna stop rambling now. 😛

      2. Then I think you’ll love Red Rising. I swear to God in the two books of the trilogy I’ve read I honestly thought there were scenes that were going to kill of everyone! I reckon the third will be the same!
I’ll stick with sci-fi books then, I know I’ll like those 🙂 but it does sound like an interesting story, and if Across the Universe reminded you of it as well then I’m even more excited to get started on it! 🙂

  4. Totally agree with Red Rising. That world was incredible. I still need to finish the rest of the books. As a science fan, I was seriously impressed. I still need to read the rest of these books. After reading Nevernight, I’m looking forward to reading Illuminae. 🙂

    1. Red Rising is one of my all-time favourites. God I can’t wait to re-read this series, and actually read the last book; I still haven’t gotten around to Morning Star yet!
Oh I hope you really love Illuminae then, of all the books I picked it’s definitely one of my ultimate favourites so I hope you love it as well! 😀

      1. I still haven’t read Golden Son. I’m so behind. I’m on an ARC reading frenzy the last month. I keep getting approved so I was thinking if I post enough reviews that maybe I’ll get an auto-approval. Wouldn’t that be nice? 😊 I’ve heard that I should read Illuminae in paper format because of the pictures. I’m surprised you haven’t finish the trilogy. I’ll look out for your rave review of Morning Star. 🙂

      2. I’ve read Golden Son but honestly it was so long ago I feel I’d need to re-read it, and Red Rising obviously, before I can go on to Morning Star.
An auto-approval would be nice, I have a couple of ARCs in my to-review pile but they’re not being released or archived for a while so I have some time to get around to them.
Definitely read Illuminae in paper format! It’s one of the only books I’ve risked carrying to work in my bag because of it but it’s worth it to see everyting as it should be.
It’ll definitely be a rave review, even without having read it I can tell you that for sure! 😀

  5. I’m enjoy this genre but am not a big reader on it. However, I did read Illuminae and fell in love so fast with it so I would also recommend this book to anyone is starting Sci-fi. I have started The Lunar Chronicles and wow Meyer did such a great job combining fairy-tales and sci-fi.

    1. I love the sci-fi genre but comparatively I haven’t read that many books within it, why I had to add some that were on my to-read list as well as those I’ve read and loved.
Illuminae was amazing! And The Lunar Chronicles is one of my all-time favourite series, I definitely agree with you that Marissa Meyer did a great job with all four books! 😀

    1. Oh those are four of my favourites as well, as soon as I came up with the space theme for this week I knew they had to go on my list; especially Winter and Illuminae.
That’s all right, and thanks 🙂 I’m glad you liked my choices for this week ❤

  7. Excellent list! I own the Pierce Brown novel because it’s the one and only time I won a Goodreads giveaway, but haven’t read it yet. I own These Broken Stars and Inside Out from book sales. I want to read Stitching Snow and Starflight SO bad. And I have Across the Universe checked out because I found the third book used and bought it for a quarter.
So all in all, excellent choices!!

    1. Thanks! Oh I’d highly recommend started Red Rising as soon as, it’s such a brilliant book and in spite of the slow start it gets amazing as it goes on.
These Broken Stars is an all-time favourite of mine, and anything Marie V. Snyder writes is as well 🙂
I’m looking forwards to starting Across the Universe one day soon, hopefully we’ll both enjoy that one.
      And thanks again! 😀

  8. So many good ones Beth! even though I do have a favorite in the Red Rising trilogy…I think the world might already know this about me smh lol. I recently purchased The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet for the same reasons, I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. I really want to pick up These Broken Stars, another series with rave reviews. I LOVE this genre!

    1. Thanks! Yeah the Red Rising trilogy is a favourite of mine too, I still need to read the last book but I’ve heard great things about it. The same with The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I can’t wait to get started on that one.
I hope you really enjoy These Broken Stars then, as far as I’m concerned it more than lives up to all the rave reviews! 😀

      1. Awesome!!! I hope you enjoy The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I saw the cover for book 2 on a couple of booktubers channels & it has also received rave reviews by some tough SFF lovers I trust 😉

      2. I hope to start it soon, definitely before the second book is released! The cover for the second book is even more gorgeous than the first one I think, and yeah I haven’t seen any reviews but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing! 😀

And if you’re looking to get into more space themed books I’d recommend any I featured in my list this week, especially These Broken Stars and Illuminae, I think they’re by far my favourites! 😀
