July Recap

Another month has come and gone and with it another recap is being posted on Reading Every Night.

Only eight books this month, which I think is probably the least I’ve got through since I started this blog. However I have read two and a half more, which I haven’t gotten around to posting yet. It feels like July was a really busy month for me but I did make it through a lot of the tags and awards in my queue, so that’s something, and I also created an Instagram account so I’m finally joining the world of social media outside of WordPress.

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

Before I started this book I saw loads of amazing reviews for it, and I’m pleased to say Wolf by Wolf more than lived up to the hype. I brought this book a while ago, and it spend a good month and a bit on my bookshelves waiting for me to get around to it, and now I’m kicking myself for leaving it so long. The story was brilliant and now I am one of the people desperate for the second, and final, book in the duology.

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood

This was a book I only discovered recently – and Harriet Reuter Hapgood was one of the authors I met at YALC but more about that in a upcoming post – and while the story itself was a cute, romantic contemporary the maths and physics that went into explaining the wormholes really confused me. I will admit that I am not great with maths, it was my worst subject in school, so trying to keep up with Gottie and everything she discovered was a bit of a challenge at times.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Series

If anyone was looking for a cute and fluffy contemporary read they could finish in an afternoon I would recommend this series to them. A lot of the bloggers I follow on WordPress love this series and after reading the two books that are currently released it’s easy to see why. The relationship between Lara Jean and Peter has its issues, in both books there are people in the way of them being together, but the love story between the two is just so sweet to read.

Highly Illogical Behaviour by John Corey Whaley

The main focus of Highly Illogical Behaviour was the anxiety and panic attacks Solomon experiences. He hasn’t left his house in years because of them and the way this book was written really highlights the negatives of suffering like that, not only for Solomon but for his parents and later for Lisa and Clarke. This is an amazing book full of such fantastic character development that I fell in love with them all from the very start.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This became one of my most anticipated reads after I jumped on the bandwagon late. Obviously the second I saw it go up on NetGalley I requested a copy and, after reading it, it’s easy to see both why this book is so hyped up and how it could easily become most people’s top read of the year. There is so much detail that has gone into the world Mia lives in, as well as her own background and those of the people around her. The story starts off slow but the world-building and character development are more than enough to keep things interesting.

The Chronicles of Alice Series

I didn’t need to hear more than that this was an Alice in Wonderland inspired series before going out and buying The Chronicles of Alice books. The first book was amazing; you could easily see where it took inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s original story. Red Queen, while still an amazing book, seemed to have less of the Alice in Wonderland styling’s than the first book, in fact it reminded more of the Snow Queen.

Trigger warning; these are both horror books and some scenes, especially in the first book, may be uncomfortable or triggering to read.

Next month is going to be more of the same; more tags and awards, more reviews, and more Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday posts. I have a few books on my to-read list to get through, as well as some ARCs from NetGalley I am really excited to start reading.

Also, and I’m not sure how many people are aware of this because I’m not sure how many people I actually told, but I was at YALC this weekend just gone. Sometime next week once I’ve sorted out my haul I will be posting about that; and to say I overspent while I was there is a understatement.
