July Recap

Another month has come and gone and with it another recap is being posted on Reading Every Night.

Only eight books this month, which I think is probably the least I’ve got through since I started this blog. However I have read two and a half more, which I haven’t gotten around to posting yet. It feels like July was a really busy month for me but I did make it through a lot of the tags and awards in my queue, so that’s something, and I also created an Instagram account so I’m finally joining the world of social media outside of WordPress.

July Recap, #3

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

Before I started this book I saw loads of amazing reviews for it, and I’m pleased to say Wolf by Wolf more than lived up to the hype. I brought this book a while ago, and it spend a good month and a bit on my bookshelves waiting for me to get around to it, and now I’m kicking myself for leaving it so long. The story was brilliant and now I am one of the people desperate for the second, and final, book in the duology.

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood

This was a book I only discovered recently – and Harriet Reuter Hapgood was one of the authors I met at YALC but more about that in a upcoming post – and while the story itself was a cute, romantic contemporary the maths and physics that went into explaining the wormholes really confused me. I will admit that I am not great with maths, it was my worst subject in school, so trying to keep up with Gottie and everything she discovered was a bit of a challenge at times.

July Recap, #1

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Series

If anyone was looking for a cute and fluffy contemporary read they could finish in an afternoon I would recommend this series to them. A lot of the bloggers I follow on WordPress love this series and after reading the two books that are currently released it’s easy to see why. The relationship between Lara Jean and Peter has its issues, in both books there are people in the way of them being together, but the love story between the two is just so sweet to read.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

July Recap, #2

Highly Illogical Behaviour by John Corey Whaley

The main focus of Highly Illogical Behaviour was the anxiety and panic attacks Solomon experiences. He hasn’t left his house in years because of them and the way this book was written really highlights the negatives of suffering like that, not only for Solomon but for his parents and later for Lisa and Clarke. This is an amazing book full of such fantastic character development that I fell in love with them all from the very start.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This became one of my most anticipated reads after I jumped on the bandwagon late. Obviously the second I saw it go up on NetGalley I requested a copy and, after reading it, it’s easy to see both why this book is so hyped up and how it could easily become most people’s top read of the year. There is so much detail that has gone into the world Mia lives in, as well as her own background and those of the people around her. The story starts off slow but the world-building and character development are more than enough to keep things interesting.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

July Recap, #4

The Chronicles of Alice Series

I didn’t need to hear more than that this was an Alice in Wonderland inspired series before going out and buying The Chronicles of Alice books. The first book was amazing; you could easily see where it took inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s original story. Red Queen, while still an amazing book, seemed to have less of the Alice in Wonderland styling’s than the first book, in fact it reminded more of the Snow Queen.

Trigger warning; these are both horror books and some scenes, especially in the first book, may be uncomfortable or triggering to read.

Waiting on Wednesday #8

Next month is going to be more of the same; more tags and awards, more reviews, and more Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday posts. I have a few books on my to-read list to get through, as well as some ARCs from NetGalley I am really excited to start reading.

Also, and I’m not sure how many people are aware of this because I’m not sure how many people I actually told, but I was at YALC this weekend just gone. Sometime next week once I’ve sorted out my haul I will be posting about that; and to say I overspent while I was there is a understatement.

  1. I’m always so amazed by how many reviews you manage to get up!! So impressive!! I really want to read The Alice Chronicles! Horror + Alice in Wonderland are two of my favourite things ever, haha. I really think I’ll love them.

I can’t wait to see your YALC haul!!

    1. Thanks Lauren! πŸ˜€ This wasn’t as many as I planned but I got so tried from YALC I just came home and crashed instead of writing and posting reviews for other books I’d read last month!
In that case I think you’ll love The Chronicles of Alice books because they definitely fit those two themes, and they’re just amazing books as well in my opinion.
I’m hoping to have my recap of YALC and my book haul up next week. I’m splitting it into two parts because if not it would just be way too long! I have no self control when it comes to buying books I’ve discovered! πŸ™‚

    1. Oh I’m the same! πŸ˜€ If any book has even a hint of fairytales in it it immediately goes to the top of my to-read list! It took me a while to discover The Chronicles of Alice books but I really loved them as well! πŸ˜€

    1. If you enjoyed the first book then I think you’ll love P.S. I Still Love You, I think I enjoyed it a little more than To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before!
Ohh I’m really excited to see what you think of Nevernight as well. I thought it was an amazing book and I really hope you agree, but not long to go now! πŸ˜€

  2. Awesome reading month for you!! I ordered Nevernight and I am so super excited to get to it and read it! I enjoyed both books by Jenny Han also. They were cute contemporary reads. I also want to read Caraval!

    1. Thanks! Yeah it was still a good reading month, and these were all books I really enjoyed so there’s that as well.
Ohh I really hope you enjoy Nevernight, it has some mixed reviews but I thought it was an amazing book. Same with the Jenny Han ones as well, as far as cute contemporary reads go they’re two of my favourites!
Caraval looks amazing doesn’t it?! I don’t know how I’m going to wait until next year to get a copy for myself! πŸ˜€

  3. 8 books is a slow month? Go you! I think I read 6 or 7 in July. I usually average between 5-10 books, depending on how crazy it is that month. If I read a lot of fantasies, that’s usually a slower month for me. I’m hoping to read the 7 ARCs I have in August. I bought Alice after a friend recommended it, and it sounds really good. But yeah I heard about the triggers in the book. I should’ve figured you read this series since you’re such a big Alice fan. I have a bunch of Alice and Peter Pan retellings to read. πŸ™‚

    1. For me, yeah. Since I started blogging in Novemeber this is the least books I’ve read and reviewed in my blog. I guess for me this month was just a little more crazy than most!
Wow seven ARCs, hopefully you’ll get through them all in August then. And I hope you really enjoy Alice, yeah the triggers are there but if you can get past those it is a really enjoyable book. Yeah, as a massive Alice fan it was always going to go on my to-read list! πŸ™‚ I still have some more Alice retellings to read still, haven’t gotten through all of them just yet! πŸ˜€

      1. It’s summer. Things are always crazier when it’s nice outside. I sure hope so! I just knocked 2 out of 8 off the list the last two days. 6 more to go! I can do it. I hope. πŸ˜‰ I really enjoyed Splintered. After reading that, I was curious about all Alice retellings. I do love a good one. I still have 3 Peter Pan books I bought that I need to work on. Lots of retellings out there. I didn’t realize I had so many.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Well there’s that too πŸ™‚ although at the moment in England you would not guess it was summer at all!
Wow that’s impressive, they must have been really good books if you got through them so fast as well right?
I’ve always loved Alice retellings. Honestly it’s the one way to guarantee a book goes on my to-read list no matter what it is, if it’s an Alice retelling! πŸ˜€
I haven’t read many Peter Pan ones, granted there are probably more than a few great ones out there but I just can’t seem to find them! πŸ™‚

      3. Yeah, I read a bunch of decent books lately so that helps to read them faster. If it’s an author I’ve read before, I tend to flip through them faster. I stared reading Colleen Hoover’s new book today, and I’m almost finished with it. πŸ™‚ I finished a thriller earlier and Nevernight the night before. I’ve been on a bit of a marathon read the last week or two. It’s pretty crazy. I think it’s cause I mix up genres. That’s helped to keep me from reading slumps the last few months. I didn’t know there are so many Alice retellings until recently, and I’m glad there are because I like having the familiarity of a story I already know. I have the one Peter Pan retelling from OwlCrate a few months ago. I’m not all that excited about that one. I also have Never Never, which I wanted to read a few months ago and forgot about. I think I have one more but can’t think of it.

      4. Wow, that’s impressive but yeah I know what you mean. It’s always easier to get through a book quicker if it’s an amazing author writing it. I may have to try mixing up genres as well, I read a lot of fantasy but I haven’t really gone on any marathon reads lately so I wonder if I’m about to go into another slump or something!
Oh there are loads out there, and yeah some aren’t as well know so it’s easy to miss them a little I think. Ohh that’s Everland right, I hope that’s the right name, I got that in the Owl Crate box as well so it’s on my to-read list though I can’t say when I’ll get around to it! πŸ™‚

      5. Fantasy usually puts me in a slump when I read too much. I think it’s all that world building. Everland yup that’s the book. I wasn’t too thrilled about that Steampunk box. I almost cancelled my subscription over it. Oh by the way I ordered a three month Fairy Loot box. I’m so excited about the September box. I thought it would be cheaper than OwlCrate, but it only is for a single box. Oh well I’m looking forward to getting a package from the UK. πŸ™‚

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I’ve never really thought about it that way but maybe I could try reading some contemporary in between fantasy to see if that helps me as well! Yeah I wasn’t really thrilled by that book either by honestly the June theme more than made up for it!
Ohh that’s amazing. I am so excited for the September box and they haven’t even released the August one yet! πŸ˜€

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Yes! I’m so happy with the last two months of OwlCrate. Yeah, the magic theme for September sounds awesome. I’m so glad I signed up for Fairy Loot. It’s expensive though. Oh, well it looks wonderful. πŸ™‚

      8. Hopefully the next months box will be just as good as well! I loved the July box so I’m so excited for August and September; I really love the magic theme!
Yeah they’re all quite expensive aren’t they, but worth it in the end! πŸ˜€

      9. I’m so excited to get a package from the UK. They could put just about anything in it and I’d be happy. I honestly didn’t even care what they charged me. I was thrilled I was able to get a box. πŸ€— I have no doubt it’s worth it. πŸ™‚

      10. In that case I guess you’re pretty much guarenteed to love whatever it is then! It’ll probably take a while for it to arrive at yours but I guess if you’re that excited for it then it’ll be worth it in the end won’t it? πŸ˜€

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, I suppose I managed to get through a fair bit, despite not posting as amny reviews as I normally would in a month. I think I made up for it with all the tags I posted! πŸ™‚
YALC is the Young Adult Literary Convention; basically three days of panel talks with authors, workshops for writers and loads of book signed. It was seriously jam packed but the best weekend I’ve had in a while. I brought so many books! πŸ˜€

      1. It sucks because I’m in Michigan: the closest things are in Chicago or New York, and I haven’t been to either area. I’m from Phoenix, and there were more events there…I hope to go to NY one day or at least Chicago but I’m scared to go alone when I’ve never been there, you know?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh that does suck! I’m quite lucky in that aspect because I am close to London, but even still I’d love to go a US convention one day.
I know what you mean, I went to YALC on my own but it wasn’t so bad because I spoke to a lot of people there. And that’s the thing you’re always going to be able to strike up conversations with different people because you’re always going to have at least one thing in common both of you being at the convention! πŸ™‚

      3. That’s true. There’s no one here that would go with me to one, but I’m sure I would make friends going…I just get worried I would get lost in a city I’m unfamiliar with…and even though I’m an adult, I think my mom would have a heart attack if I suggested I was going to an out-of-state convention alone. (I wish you lived here!!)

      4. There’s was no one here with me either. No one understands my obsession with books! But it’s so easy to make friends while you’re there, and probably plenty of other people who would have gone alone too!
Oh I wish I lived in the US sometimes as well! But if I ever do go to a US book convention, and it is a goal of mine, I’ll let you know and we can go together! πŸ™‚

  4. Aww, I know you feel like you didn’t read a lot but it seems like, at a glance, that you’ve really enjoyed what you’ve read! Quality over quantity, I think – though I guess quality AND quantity would be even better. πŸ˜›

I am SO excited for Blood for Blood and Caraval. It’s still aaaages away (it feels) but I think it’ll be great. Hope you have a fabulous August and can’t wait for your YALC and book haul post!

    1. Yeah I guess there are just months when life gets in the way of reading, and you’re right because pretty much all the books I read this month I loved which is kind of rare now I think about it! Hopefully I’ll get more reviews posted next month, I aready have two and a half books I’ve finished, just need to write and post reviews for them!
Oh it’s definitely ages to wait for Caraval isn’t it, I don’t know how I’m going to survive until 2017 before I can read that book, at least it’s only a couple more months before Blood for Blood is released.
I’m gonna have to split my book haul/YALC posts into two parts, I way way overspent and brought so many books this month, more than ever before I think, but hopefully I’ll have my YALC recap up this weekend! πŸ˜€

      1. Ooh yay! I just caught up on ALL my reviews yesterday and it feels great, like finally! What did you just finish and what are you reading now?

2017 is gonna be great, I can feel it. Especially with ACOL. It’s definitely my most highly anticipated book for next year. πŸ˜›

Haha, that sounds great! I have two posts to look forward to from you, then. πŸ’–

      2. Ohh, I have three now I need to write so hopefully by this weekend I’ll be caught up! I just finished My Lady Jane and, while I haven’t started anything yet I’m probably going to go onto The Song of Achilles next.
Oh yes there are so many amazing books being released in 2017, ACOL is just one of them but it’s my most anticipated as well! πŸ™‚
In that case I hope you enjoy reading them both πŸ˜€
