The Pastry Book Tag

Another food tag, yummy! The only thing that would make completing this tag any more fun would be having a tray of pastries by my side to eat while I think of my answers. Sadly I’m going to have to make do imagining all the delicious treats described.

I was tagged by Allie at Multifandomed Book Blogger and Jenna at Fictional Neverland. Thank you both so much for the tag; everyone else should definitely check out Allie’s and Jenna’s original posts and while you’re there check out their blogs as well.

The Pastry Book Tag

Croissant:
Name a popular book or series that everyone (including you) love

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

I discovered this series really late. Everyone else probably read these books when they were in school, and I read them when I was in my twenties. However after starting my blog and seeing this series everywhere, seeing everyone raving about them, I picked up Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

To say I loved this series and these books feels like a massive understatement. I can’t get enough of Rick Riordan’s writing and I can’t wait to start the Heroes of Olympus books which are next on my to-read list.

Percy Jackson Series

Macaroon:
Name a book that was hard to get through but worth it at the end

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This is one of my favourite series don’t get me wrong; I really loved both the first and second books, and although I haven’t gotten around to it yet I’m sure the third book is going to be just as amazing. However it took me a while to get into Red Rising. It was recommended to me by one of my friends so even when I would have given up I kept going, and I am so glad I did. Once the story gets going it’s nonstop and completely un-put-down-able.

Red Rising

Vol-Au-Vent:
Name a book that you thought would be amazing but fell flat

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

I was really looking forwards to this book; the cover was gorgeous and the blurb sounded amazing, plus it was described as the perfect read for fans of The Night Circus. Unfortunately The Crown’s Game failed to live up to my expectations. The game was a major part of the plot but it never felt like either of the characters were ever in danger, despite it being a battle to the death. There was a love triangle and insta-love, which are two tropes I cannot stand, and the setting just didn’t work for me.

The Crown's Game

Pain Au Chocolat:
Name a book that you thought would be one thing but turned out to be something else

More Than This by Patrick Ness

Honestly I wasn’t sure what I expected going into this book. The blurb didn’t give anything away and I didn’t read any reviews before picking up More Than This. Once I started though I couldn’t put it down; I spent most of my time reading trying to work out what was happening and what would happen to Seth. I had a load of theories which were which were constantly changing the more I read and discovered, but in the end it turned out I wasn’t really right about anything.

More Than This

Profiterole:
Name a book or series that doesn’t get enough attention

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

This is a brilliant series. A mixture of dystopian and fantasy it has tension and risk, a cute romance with no love triangle and brilliant friendships mixed in. Honestly I’d recommend this series to anyone, I think it deserves a lot more recognition and it would be great to see more people get into these books. Veronica Rossi is an amazing author and I am eager to start her new series soon.

Under the Never Sky Series

Croquembouche:
Name a book or series that’s extremely complex

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

There was a lot going on in this book, and while I loved learning all about Mia and the world she lived in it was a lot of information to take in. As well as the general background to the world which enables you to understand Mia’s journey there are footnotes throughout this book which have so much extra information packed in. It’s a lot of information but in the end it adds so much to the story.

Nevernight

Napoleon:
Name a movie or TV show based off a book that you liked better than the book itself

Game of Thrones

Don’t get me wrong I love the books, but the TV is amazing and it seems like each series gets better and better. The last two episodes of season six, The Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter, are honestly two of the best episodes I’ve seen in a while. I cannot wait for season seven, in fact I feel like I’m more excited for that than I am for the sixth book to be released.

Game of Thrones

Empanada:
Name a book that was bittersweet

The Chronicles of Alice by Christina Henry

This is a very dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland, and I won’t say there’s a happy for ending for Alice and Hatcher, more of a hopeful one. They both face a lot of challenges, things that really throw them and make them question everything, but they come back from it and to each other time and time again.

The Chronicles of Alice

Kolompeh:
Name a book or series that takes place somewhere other than your home country

And I Darken by Kiersten White

I haven’t read that many books set in my home country compared to those set outside the UK so this question could have a lot of answers. Instead I’m going to go with my most recent read set in the Ottoman Empire, And I Darken. It’s set back in the fourteen hundreds and the attention to detail, the historical accuracy and the setting itself was all brilliantly written. On top of that it’s an amazing book with great characters and an interesting story as well.

And I Darken

Pate A Choux:
Name one food from a book or series that you would like to try

Anything from The Night Circus

“There are vendors traversing the crowd around you, selling refreshments and oddities, creations flavored with vanilla and honey, chocolate and cinnamon.”

The Night Circus is one of my ultimate favourite books, and the main reason is because of the setting itself. I loved the world-building that created The Night Circus, the magic and wonder that I experienced within the pages, and part of that included the food. As part of the circus there were plenty of circus-themed foods and the descriptions made me drool. I’d love to be able to visit the Night Circus myself, just for one evening.

“Layers of pastry and cinnamon and sugar all rolled into a twist and covered in icing.”
“Wow,” Bailey says.
“Exactly,” Widget replies. “And we should get some cocoa and some chocolate mice.”

  1. Ooooh I love me a tag based around food! 😉 Thank you for tagging me! I really want to read the Alice Chronicles books – I think Alice in Wonderland lends itself so well to a darker retelling. I also need to get on and read The Night Circus – it’s been on my TBR forever. Great answers. 🙂 x

    1. Same here, they’re always my favourite tags! And you’re welcome. 🙂
In that case I think you’ll enjoy The Chronicles of Alice because it is definitely dark. I hope you enjoy The Night Circus as well, it’s a brilliant book one of my favourites as well!
      Thanks! 😀

  2. Knowing that it took you a while to get into Red Rising will hopefully serve as motivation when I finally pick that series up! Everyone’s been saying such good things about it, and now I’m just waiting for my reservation from the library so I can read it in print.

I’m about to get into Nevernight – hopefully sometime next week – and I’m glad to hear that the information all adds to the story! It seems like people either hate or love the writing style, too, and I’m hoping I’m the latter. 😛

    1. Oh I think it’s a series you’ll really enjoy Reg, yeah the beginnings slow but it’s get so much better when the plot starts kicking into high gear. I hope you’ll love it.
Ohh, I’d be interested to see what you think of Nevernight, it has some mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it and the writing style was a big part of that! Did you end up going to the signing event Jay Kristoff did by the way?

  3. Ahh, I so want pastries now 😂

I’ll never get sick of seeing people talk about how much they love Percy Jackson!! I really need to read Under the Never Sky and The Alice Chronicles! I’m interested in And I Darken too. I originally wasn’t sure if I wanted to add it to my TBR, but then a bunch of reviews convinced me, haha. Also, I can not wait to read Nevernight!!

    1. Yeah, me too actually!
That’s good because I don’t think I’m ever going to get sick of talking about how much I love the Percy Jackson books! 🙂 And it’ll get worse when I read the rest of the books Rick Riordan has released.
They’re both amazing series and I would highly recommend them. Same with And I Darken, I was the same actually it was only after I saw some amazing reviews that I actually added it to my to-read list and picked it up for myself.
You haven’t got long to go until the release of Nevernight, I hope you really enjoy it, it’s an amazing book in my opinion! 😀

  4. I was really interested in The Crown’s Game – the summary sounded amazing and like something I would very much enjoy. But then I read a sampler (or something like that) and I just couldn’t get into the writing style for some reason. And now that you said that it has a love-triangle and insta-love (two things I can’t stand) I’m not even going to bother with it. After all, there is a ton of books that I NEED to read out there! 😀
I seriously want to read And I Darken! It just sounds like something I would love, plus I do need to read more historical fiction. And then I heard from someone that it’s about the female version of Vlad the Impaler and I was sold! Another book that I need to get, once my book buying ban is over. 🙂

    1. See that was what caught my attention with The Crown’s Game as well, the blurb. The concept itself sounded amazing but the book itself was just a letdown, and not just becaue of the love triangle or insta-love (although those were two main reasons!). Yeah there are plenty of other better books out there you probably have on your to-read list, and if you don’t I have tons of recommendations as well! 😀
I would highly recommend And I Darken; I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from this book but it honestly exceeded all of expectations. The story itself was brilliant and the characters are beyond amazing. I think I could go on about this book for ages, just praising everything about it!
I think after this month and this weekend I really need to put myself on a book buying ban. To say I’ve overspent is a massive massive understatement!

      1. Hahaha, you know that I already have A TON of books to read! XD Especially all the ones we have been talking about.
I’m really happy to hear that! It makes me even more exited to be reading it (once I manage to get my hands on it that is). I have mostly read world war II historical fiction, so I’m even more exited about this one. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah I’m the same as well, honestly there are so many books I want to start right this second I don’t know which to choose first!
I’d only read more World War Two historical fiction as well but And I Darken was brilliant, I hope you really enjoy it and I can’t wait to see your review for it too! 😀

  5. Yummy! I really thought I could read this tag without feeling the urge to dash to the nearest bakery. I failed!
I love Game of Thrones as a tv show, but I just can’t stand Martin’s writing style, so I gave up on the first book before reaching a hundred pages.

    1. The only reason I managed to write this tag without running to the nearest bakery was because I wrote it in the evening and every shop had long since closed by then! But to be honest even commenting back on this post is making me want to go out and buy some pastries! 😀
Yeah I have read the books but the TV show is just so much easier to follow and actually get through. The writing of the books just feels so heavy and there are a lot of characters and situations and locations you need to keep track of. It can get a lot at times!

  6. Love this tag!! I felt a similar way going into More Than This– I had know idea where the story would end up, and I never predicted that it would end in the way it did. It was the ultimate plot twist!

    1. Thanks Holly, you should definitely take part in it if you want as well, I’d love to see your answers for all the questions! 😀
More Than This was just full of plot twists for me, reading it was practically a rollercoaster ride because I never knew where it was going but I loved every second of it. I haven’t read many of Patrick Ness’s books but they seem to get better and better so I have really high hopes for A Monster Calls and the Chaos Walking trilogy now! 😀

  7. Red Rising was recommended to me by a friend, and if I didn’t know beforehand that it takes a long time to get into, I probably wouldn’t have stuck with it, but I was glad I did because it’s an amazing book. I heard the same thing about The Crown’s Game. I was really looking forward to that until I read all the negative reviews. Totally agree with you on Nevernight. I’m not reading it as fast as I had hoped. Those footnotes really slowed me down for a while but I plan to make a dent in it this weekend.

    1. It took me ages to read Red Rising; mainly because I would read a chapter or a few pages, wouldn’t get pulled into the story, and put it away for another day. Then the action started and I did not put it down until I’d finished. I’m glad I did stick with it because it ended up being more than worth it but yeah I think if it hadn’t been recommended to me then I wouldn’t have carried on with it and I would have missed out on a great trilogy!
I was really looking forwards to The Crown’s Game too. The concept sounded absolutely amazing as well but the book itself just fell flat.
Oh it took me ages to get through it, I think it was flicking back and forth through my Kindle to get to the footnotes and then back to the page I was on. I hope you manage to get more of it read this weekend. Where are you up to now?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The same thing happened with me. I had such a hard time with the beginning of Red Rising. As soon as Eo died, I was hooked. 🤗 I also liked that the Crown’s Game is set in Russia because I’ve never read a novel set there before. I still haven’t read it because of the negative reviews. I’d probably read it if I picked it up from the library just to see what it’s all about. I’m at the 51% mark on my Kindle for Nevernight. The footnotes are lessening so that’s nice. Not much has happened so far. She’s at Red Church training to be a Blade, but it’s just training classes. Nothing exciting is going on yet. I can’t believe how much more I have to read with very little action. I hope it picks up soon. My friend is about 200 pages ahead of me, and I still don’t think much has happened for him either.

      2. Ahh, for me it was the instant Darrow discovered that Mars has actually been colonized and the Reds had been lied to for centuries. From then on I just couldn’t get enough of the story!
The Grisha series is set in an alternate, fantasy, Russian-inspired world, I’d recommend that series instead if you’re looking for something set there.
I think the further along you get the less footnotes there are just because a lot of the information has already been put in the book earlier. It is quite slow, I didn’t mind so much because of the world-building but I think it’s only nearer the end that things start to really change and kick into high gear for Mia.

  8. Thank you so much for the tag! I officially want to go out and buy a bunch of pastries now. 😂

I completely agree with you on Under the Never Sky being a series that doesn’t get a lot of attention. I’ve always felt like it was so underrated, especially in the realm of dystopias where it’s sometimes tough to find a book that really stands out. But that series did stand out and it was amazing, to me. I still sometimes go back and reread parts because I loved it so much.

Also, I am so excited for Nevernight! And I need to read More Than This and Red Rising asap. 😊

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have a lot of fun with this one! And I would definitely recommend at least buying some pastries before you answer these questions! 😀
Oh it’s a brilliant series isn’t it. And honestly I’m a little surprised by the fact that it hasn’t received a lot of attention because everything about it is just so solid; the characters, the world, the writing. Which in itself is rare in dystopian books!
Ohh Nevernight was brilliant in my opinion, once I got into the book I couldn’t put it down so I really hope you enjoy it. And the same with More Than This and Red Rising, both are amazing books and I think you’ll really love them! 😀

      1. I’ll definitely have too lol.

Exactly! It was such a well rounded series. It really deserves more attention.

For what I’ve heard of it so far I think (and hope) I’ll really enjoy Nevernight. And I’ll have to move both of them up on my TBR! Especially with how much I’ve been hearing about them lately. 😄

      2. I’m planning to re-read and review the series soon, talking about it is making me want to pick up the books again!
I think you will too but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for your review to see what you think of it.
Same with More Than This and Red Rising as well! 😀

    1. They’re brilliant books aren’t they. These are actually the UK covers (I think they were the UK re-release covers, I actually have two copies of the first book with different covers) but they’re gorgeous aren’t they, definitely my favourite of the lot!
Whoo, thanks! 🙂 I’m glad you liked my answers and I think they’re all brilliant books! I’m hoping to have reviews for More Than This and And I Darken up soon as well! 😀

      1. Are you in the UK? Now it makes sense….how you spell favorite…
        I never realized that.
Is The Winner’s Kiss version out there the one where she is wearing a green dress? Or is it still red?
Sometimes I like the UK covers better.
I love that series. It’s probably my favorite (US spelling, lol) series of all time. It made me cry. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yep, born and raised. And in the UK we add U’s in a lot of words 🙂 I take it you’re American then.
I have The Winner’s Kiss with the green dress, the second book was the one with the red dress (I think the US cover had a blue dress)
It varies, there are some books I much prefer the UK covers for but then others I prefer the US version! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It’s so strange that they changed the color of the dress…I mean, we speak the same language, so how different would a UK copy be?
Now I’m curious…I kinda want to get my hands on one and compare the two.
Have you seen the different country editions of The Lunar Chronicles? Absolute artwork!

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I think most of the time they change the covers because they think a different one would fit the countries audience better, but I’m not sure how could changing the colour of the dress really affect the audience.
I haven’t seen all of them but the editions I have of the Lunar Chronicles are gorgeous so I can only imagine the rest of the world’s covers are beautiful as well! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Right! Like green is going to be better for a UK audience? That’s what they do, though. I think we should get people to trade so we can get copies of our favorite books with different covers. Like, if one of the U.K. Versions of a book I like has a super cool cover, and you think the US version is cool, we could mail each other the other’s version. It’d be like being book pen pals!! Lol!

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I don’t have any preference between green and red, I would have picked up the book no matter the colour of the dress.
Ohh, that’s a great idea! I reckon quite a few people would be up for doing that as well. There are some books which I definitely prefer the US covers, and others when I think the UK ones are better so I’m sure there’s loads of other people would think the same too. 😀
