The Pastry Book Tag

Another food tag, yummy! The only thing that would make completing this tag any more fun would be having a tray of pastries by my side to eat while I think of my answers. Sadly I’m going to have to make do imagining all the delicious treats described.

Name a popular book or series that everyone (including you) love

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

I discovered this series really late. Everyone else probably read these books when they were in school, and I read them when I was in my twenties. However after starting my blog and seeing this series everywhere, seeing everyone raving about them, I picked up Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

To say I loved this series and these books feels like a massive understatement. I can’t get enough of Rick Riordan’s writing and I can’t wait to start the Heroes of Olympus books which are next on my to-read list.

Macaroon:
Name a book that was hard to get through but worth it at the end

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This is one of my favourite series don’t get me wrong; I really loved both the first and second books, and although I haven’t gotten around to it yet I’m sure the third book is going to be just as amazing. However it took me a while to get into Red Rising. It was recommended to me by one of my friends so even when I would have given up I kept going, and I am so glad I did. Once the story gets going it’s nonstop and completely un-put-down-able.

Name a book that you thought would be amazing but fell flat

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

I was really looking forwards to this book; the cover was gorgeous and the blurb sounded amazing, plus it was described as the perfect read for fans of The Night Circus. Unfortunately The Crown’s Game failed to live up to my expectations. The game was a major part of the plot but it never felt like either of the characters were ever in danger, despite it being a battle to the death. There was a love triangle and insta-love, which are two tropes I cannot stand, and the setting just didn’t work for me.

Pain Au Chocolat:
Name a book that you thought would be one thing but turned out to be something else

More Than This by Patrick Ness

Honestly I wasn’t sure what I expected going into this book. The blurb didn’t give anything away and I didn’t read any reviews before picking up More Than This. Once I started though I couldn’t put it down; I spent most of my time reading trying to work out what was happening and what would happen to Seth. I had a load of theories which were which were constantly changing the more I read and discovered, but in the end it turned out I wasn’t really right about anything.

Profiterole:
Name a book or series that doesn’t get enough attention

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

This is a brilliant series. A mixture of dystopian and fantasy it has tension and risk, a cute romance with no love triangle and brilliant friendships mixed in. Honestly I’d recommend this series to anyone, I think it deserves a lot more recognition and it would be great to see more people get into these books. Veronica Rossi is an amazing author and I am eager to start her new series soon.

Name a book or series that’s extremely complex

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

There was a lot going on in this book, and while I loved learning all about Mia and the world she lived in it was a lot of information to take in. As well as the general background to the world which enables you to understand Mia’s journey there are footnotes throughout this book which have so much extra information packed in. It’s a lot of information but in the end it adds so much to the story.

Name a movie or TV show based off a book that you liked better than the book itself

Game of Thrones

Don’t get me wrong I love the books, but the TV is amazing and it seems like each series gets better and better. The last two episodes of season six, The Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter, are honestly two of the best episodes I’ve seen in a while. I cannot wait for season seven, in fact I feel like I’m more excited for that than I am for the sixth book to be released.

Name a book that was bittersweet

The Chronicles of Alice by Christina Henry

This is a very dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland, and I won’t say there’s a happy for ending for Alice and Hatcher, more of a hopeful one. They both face a lot of challenges, things that really throw them and make them question everything, but they come back from it and to each other time and time again.

Name a book or series that takes place somewhere other than your home country

And I Darken by Kiersten White

I haven’t read that many books set in my home country compared to those set outside the UK so this question could have a lot of answers. Instead I’m going to go with my most recent read set in the Ottoman Empire, And I Darken. It’s set back in the fourteen hundreds and the attention to detail, the historical accuracy and the setting itself was all brilliantly written. On top of that it’s an amazing book with great characters and an interesting story as well.

Name one food from a book or series that you would like to try

Anything from The Night Circus

“There are vendors traversing the crowd around you, selling refreshments and oddities, creations flavored with vanilla and honey, chocolate and cinnamon.”

The Night Circus is one of my ultimate favourite books, and the main reason is because of the setting itself. I loved the world-building that created The Night Circus, the magic and wonder that I experienced within the pages, and part of that included the food. As part of the circus there were plenty of circus-themed foods and the descriptions made me drool. I’d love to be able to visit the Night Circus myself, just for one evening.

“Wow,” Bailey says.
“Exactly,” Widget replies. “And we should get some cocoa and some chocolate mice.”
