Waiting on Wednesday: The Song Rising

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which shines a light on eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.

This week my pick is;

The Song Rising

The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing

Release Date: 7th March 2017

Goodreads

On the eve of a new decade, after two hundred years of Scion rule, a revolution is beginning. Its unlikely cradle is the clairvoyant underworld in London, and even an old ally’s betrayal cannot stop it.

But an enemy from Paige Mahoney’s past is about to return—an enemy that could quench the flame of hope for good…

I will admit I’m not too crazy about the cover change. I already have the first two books with the original covers so now my collection of The Bone Season series won’t match, which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Either way though this book is on the top of my to-buy, to read, and most-anticipated lists. I loved the first two and after the ending to The Mime Order I need to find out what happens next.

So what does everyone think; is The Song Rising a must on anyone else’s to-read list or are there any other books that you can’t wait for to be released?

      1. I know right!? And the fact that I finished TMO less than a week after it was released. I’m dying for TSR. Not to mentioned all the things Samantha Shannon has been tweeting about the fourth book. I already want that on too. 😂

      2. Jesus, I only read TMO last November maybe, so I think it had already been out for a while at that point. It’s just such along wait, and you know the wait for the fourth one is going to be just as long!
I need to follow her on Twitter so I can see what she’s writing about the fourth book, but that will only make the wait for that one unbearable!

      3. Yes! I’m already dreading the wait for the fourth one, and apparently the fourth book is the book that’s ‘going to change everything’ so major anticipation. 😫
You so should! It’s not so bad haha. Her tweet make you want the books more but getting little tidbits and teasers is neat. 😊

      4. Oh my god you’re making me even more excited for the fourth one and we haven’t even gotten the third one yet!
Definitely major anticipation I wonder what it means ‘changing everything’, honestly I thought the second one did that! 🙂

      5. That’s me right now! If only the wait between books wasn’t so long. 😫

I know right? That was a jaw dropping type of ending all things considered and a ‘change everything’ type of moment. Kind of has me scared for Samantha Shannon’s actual definition of ‘changing everything’ 😂.

      6. It does seem like the wait for this series is longer than most though. Not sure if that’s because it is or just because I’m so so excited about the books!
Exactly, if she doesn’t consider what happened in book two a ‘change everything’ moment, and in my mind it really was, then I reckon book four will bring about the end of the world or something! Maybe Warden will end up betraying Paige!

      7. I think in part it is and in part it isn’t. Most series I read have a book out a year, but there are those rare times where the releases get pushed back. I think originally TSR was supposed to come out this year, but Samantha Shannon wanted to spend more time on it. Which means the end results is going to be that much better but the wait is torture lol. Also, being really excited does make it feel longer. 😂

I know right!? See that was my first thought when she said ‘changes everything’. I’ll probably die if he does betray her though because Paige and Warden and I love them. Either that or one of the allies Warden brought in betrays them. I’m betting it’s going to have something to do with Nashira. She was absent in TMO so she has to make her reappearances sometime soon.

      8. Oh don’t get me wrong I guess the more time she spends on the book the better, I’m just really unreasonable in that I would prefer it if books came out immediately after the latest one you know. I have no patience when it comes to new released. Still I’m sure TSR will be amazing!
I feel a betrayal or death, maybe even Nick, honestly though I think it will be something even bigger than all of that if it’s supposed to change everything! But ohh, I’d love to see Nashira return in the next book, or the fourth one if not! 🙂

      9. I’m the same with every series I read! If only all the books could be released at once. 🙈

That would be huge, if it involved Nick. Especially since that would be something you wouldn’t see coming. Nick is so loyal, you know. He’s always been Paige’s protector in a way. I wonder what’s going to happen with their whole group considering they’re kind of split now. Not to mention the fact of Zeke and Nick and how Zeke was still with Jaxon when all that happened in TMO went down. (If I remember correctly, anyway. It’s been so long since I read TMO.) But if it is death and it involves Nick I would be so upset. *wishes she could protect all of the characters* 😂

Whatever she has planned it is definitely going to be crazy and I can’t wait!

And yes! I’m dreading and excited for Nashira’s return all at the same time. She’s that villain you love to hate lol.

      10. Yep, sometimes it’s the sucky thing about discovering a new amazing series; waiting for all the books to be released!
Exactly, and it would definitely fit the whole ‘change everything’. Jaxon was always a bit of an enigma so while his betrayal was a shocker it made sense. I would be really really surprised if Nick was the same. But it could happen with the whole Zeke still being with Jaxon (yeah it’s been a while since I read it as well but I remember that part!)
I hope it’s not death but I feel like a character has to die at some point you know.
Definitely love to hate, I’m really excited to see where Samantha Shannon goes with this series! 😀

      11. Exactly!

Yeah, I always figured that sooner or later Jaxon would betray them. He always seemed finicky and very much it’s my way or else. I didn’t think he was the one who had been the original betrayer though. I think that was what made it so shocking, his connection to Nashira. I would be too but yeah at this point I think anything is possible when it comes to this series lol.

Someone definitely has to die at some point. Which will break my heart but so far there hasn’t been a major death so that has to be coming soon.

You know the whole side back story with Paige’s cousin Finn? I keep waiting for that to pop back up. I have this theory that he isn’t dead. She said something about Ireland coming up in TSR so I’m on the edge of my seat hoping that whole back story is brought up again. 😂

So am I! If only it was next year. All of this TBS talk has me wanting TSR even more lol.

      12. There was so much he seemed to keep secret from the others, and honestly he was never really a kind character (if that makes sense) so it makes sense that he’d be fighting opposite Paige from now on. I didn’t think he was the original betrayer either, even though he was a bit finicky he still went out of his way to get Paige back in the first book!
I’m trying to guess who will die, I think Paige and Warden are both relatively safe but anyone else could be killed off at any time I reckon.
Wow, I think it would be amazing if there was more to Finn than his death. I do hope we see more of the clairvoyants who escaped with Paige in the first book (I can’t remember his name but her friend who escaped with them, who Paige lost and now she thinks is dead, I don’t think he is!)
Urgh, same here, it’s making the wait even more unbearable but making me more and more excited for TSR! 😀

      13. Exactly! He was so desperate to get Paige back, but now I wonder if he had some ulterior motive behind wanting her back so badly. Considering how bad Nashira wants Paige it makes me wonder. And I don’t think Jaxon and Nashira, separately, want Paige for the same reasons. SO MANY POSSIBILITIES! 😂

Whoever she ends up killing off will definitely be a shocker. I am not prepared! 😫

I hope we do too! I can’t remember his name either, but I also don’t think he’s dead. I feel like this series is one of those where you have to absolutely know they’re dead for them to be dead type of series.

Same! I’m thinking I need a reread of TBR and TMO soon though. 😊

      14. I don’t think what we’ve discovered of his plan so far is his whole plan, if that makes sense. Jaxon seems like the kind of character who has loads of plans in place for Paige and I don’t think what happened in the end of the second book, though it probably threw him off, has completely defeated him!
I’m at YALC today and I saw Samantha Shannon. She said she sees the series as having two story arcs, so the first four books are one arc and then the last three are another. She also said she doesn’t think people aren’t going to like her after how she ends the fourth book so now I’m legitimately terrified!
Yeah I know what you mean, like you need to actually see their bodies to know for a fact they’re dead!
I’m definitely going to have to re-read the series before the third book is released! 🙂

      15. I don’t think so either! I’m scared and excited to see whatever his next move is lol.

Lucky! If only I didn’t live all the way in Texas. I hope one day she does a signing or something here. I bet it was amazing getting to see her 😄! She said something similar on twitter at one point about one arc being the first four books and another being the last three. But the fact that she thinks we aren’t going to like her after the fourth book… I’m with you on being terrified. Now while I’m reading the fourth book I’m going to be dreading the ending. 😂

Yep! And if there is no body as proof I will keep believing a character is alive until I get that proof.

      16. I think given what we’ve already seen of Jaxon it’s going to be something manipulative and low-key evil!
It was amazing seeing her, and I’m sure she’ll go on tour at some point, maybe after more of her books have been released so you can get her to sign more of the series! Yeah she probably mentioned it before, but I’m super nervous about the fourth book now as well. It’s going to be kind of terrifying when we have it in our hands and are actually about to start it.
Yep, if we haven’t seen a body I completely believe that character is still alive somewhere! 🙂

      17. Probably! I can here his infamous words to Paige “O my lovely” when whatever he has planned is revealed. It’ll be interesting for sure. See, where I don’t like Nashira (beyond being interested in whatever she has planned/anticipating her reapperance) I actually kind of like Jaxon. I love how Samantha Shannon made him likable as a villain. It’s like you don’t want him to win but you actually kind of like him. 😂

I hope so! It would be amazing to meet her and get books signed. 😄

Yes! I have the worst spoiler tendency when it comes to comments like that being made about a book so I’m going to be fighting myself not to spoil the ending whenever I get my hands on the fourth one lol.

        Same!

      18. I do love the dynamic between Paige and Jaxon, I think after everything that happened in the second book it will be interesting seeing where they go in the third book. I didlike his character; I was never completely sure of his motivations so I always loved finding out little bits of his past you know?
Hopefully one day soon you’ll get to then!
Ohh I’m going to be terrified of the book, I won’t spoil myself, normally I’m quite good at that, but I will be scared the whole way through about what’s going to happened to all my favourite characters! 🙂

  1. I haven’t read this series yet (its on my never-ending TBR list!) but I really like this cover. However I totally understand how irritating it is when the last book of a trilogy/series doesn’t match the books you already have! publishers can be EVIL lol

    1. Oh it’s a brilliant series, and I know all to well the pains of the never-ending TBR list as well! 😀
It’s not the final book or anything, but it means half the series will be in different covers. I’m not sure if that’s better or worse!

    1. It was released a while ago, I only just got around to posting it as my WoW post this week! I do like the cover, although I wish it matched the previous two, but the blurb already has me hooked. I’m sure I will enjoy it, I loved the first two books and it’s become one of my favourite series, I hope you enjoy it as well! 😀
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your WoW!

  2. I have the first two books in this series & really need to carve out some time to binge read it, heard amazing things. I saw the new cover & also am bummed about their choice. Seems like the U.S. Is subtly trying to put out more white covers like the U.K. Does. I’m in the U.S. But I sure can’t resist a sleek white cover…just wish they’d do it from the start 😞

    1. Oh you definitely should get around to them soon, or maybe wait until the third one is released and binge read all three! I’m one of the people saying amazing this about the series, and I’m sure when this one is released I’ll be saying amazing things about it as well.
Yeah I always hate it when covers change, just because then my series doesn’t look like a series. It’s an OK cover, but yeah why couldn’t they have done it from the start! 🙂

      1. LOl I’m going to have to wait until we get closer to publication date for the 3rd book, I have TERRIBLE memory. Part of the reason I started reviewing also was to make sure it all stays fresh. This is def at the top of my list though, even with the new white jacket 😦 lol

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh in that case you definitely need to read it soon. It’s become one of my favourite series and I am so so excited for this book to be released, just got quite a while to wait.
Yeah, I think the spines will still match, so looking at it that way it will look like a series but it’s not the same!
