Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Enjoyed with Less Than 2000 Ratings on Goodreads.
Is 2000 a lot of ratings for a book on Goodreads? I didn’t think so and when I first saw this topic on The Broke and the Bookish website I didn’t think I’d be able to come up with five, let alone ten, books that I’d read and enjoyed with under 2000 ratings. So when I went on Goodreads, looked through my ‘Read’ list from both before and after I started blogging, I was surprised to find that I’d read a lot more books than I first assumed with less than 2000 ratings.
Into the Dim by Janet B. Taylor
1480 Ratings
As a time travel book of course this went to the top of my to-read list when it was finally released, I am a massive fan of time travel books as you may already now, and I really enjoyed Into the Dim. It’s been described as Outlander for teenagers, and although I can’t say whether I think that’s accurate as I’ve never read Outlander, as time travel books Into the Dim is a solid story.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry
524 Ratings
I can’t say I was really surprised to see this book had less than 2000 ratings on Goodreads. While I enjoyed it, and see a lot of other people on WordPress who share my opinion, I don’t think it’s gotten a lot of recognition yet. As a magical realism book I won’t say A Fierce and Subtle Poison is my favourite but it’s a good story with an amazing setting.
Waging War by April White

This book, and the whole series for that matter, has not got the recognition it deserves. This is my all-time favourite time travel series; it has great characters, amazing plots, and the research that goes into the history is without fault. I picked up the first book because it was free on Kindle and immediately brought the rest of the series.
13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough
273 Ratings
I got this book from NetGalley and even though it isn’t my usual genre it sounded interesting enough for me to pick it up. I ended up really enjoying this book; as a psychological thriller I was constantly trying to guess the ending, and even when I thought I knew what was coming I found myself shocked when the big reveal happened.
Midnight City by J. Barton Mitchell
1378 Ratings
The Conquered Earth books are a mixture of sci-fi and dystopia, and while that may not sound like a ideal mixture it works with this series and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of either genre. The stories are good but I think it’s the world-building and the character development where each books really come into their own.
Never Never by Brianna Shrum
527 Ratings
Fairytale retellings are another favourite genre of mine, but I was a little wary of this Peter Pan one after I read and DNF’ed Tiger Lily a few years back. However I couldn’t deny I was interested in this glimpse into Captain Hook’s mind. I really loved this book, I never thought I’d find myself sympathising with James Hook but by the end of this book I really felt for his character.
Lumière by Jacqueline Garlick
532 Ratings
I haven’t really read many Steampunk books but Lumière is one of the ones I have not only read but really enjoyed. After finishing Lumière I started Noir, the second book in the series straight away, and after the cliff-hanger ending I am now waiting (im)patiently for the third book.
The Vanishing Girl by Laura Thalassa
1672 Ratings
Laura Thalassa is one of those authors who’s books I binge read after falling in love with her work. The Queen of All That Dies was the first of her books I picked up, from there I went on to her Unearthly series and then The Vanishing Girl. Of all the books Laura Thalassa has released to date I think The Vanishing Girl is my favourite, plus the cover is gorgeous beyond belief.
Crossed by Eliza Crewe
1050 Ratings
This was probably the book that I was most surprised had under 2000 ratings on Goodreads. When I read the first in the series I was hooked; not only on the story but on Meda’s character and her ‘voice’. She is sharp, witty, hilarious, and I was constantly laughing aloud on the train to work as I read each book.
Deceptive by Emily Lloyd-Jones

I really enjoyed the first book of this series so when the second was released I added it to my to-read list and couldn’t wait to get started. While the first book was good I felt the second was so much better, it felt like the stakes for all characters were a lot higher and I am excited to see where their stories go when the third book is released.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of your favourite under hyped books are.
I loved AFASP so much!!! I also really want to read The Vanishing Girl (the cover is STUNNING!), Into the Dim, 13 Minutes and Never Never. I’m really glad you enjoyed them 😊!!

It is a brilliant book isn’t it! I was honestly surprised it had so few ratings on Goodreads!
I would recommend anything by Laura Thalassa, she’s an amazing author and yes, the cover for The Vanishing Girl is gorgeous isn’t it?!
The rest are all really good books, and they deserve a lot more recognition than they currently have so I hope you love them as well! 😀

Nice post! 🙂 I absolutely LOVED 13 Minutes, too. I think that one will definitely gain some traction over the next couple of months, mind. It’s interesting that you DNF’d Tiger Lily, I bought that one as a holiday read and it wasn’t what I expected AT ALL. I actually found it pretty slow?! I’m glad you’ve recommended another Peter Pan retelling as I’d love to get my hands on one that is a little bit pacier. 🙂 x

Thank you! 🙂
Yeah I do hope 13 Minutes gets more traction, it’s an amazing book and definitely deserves more recognition!
I just couldn’t get in to Tiger Lily, it’s possible I was going through a slump at the time but even now I have no interest in picking it up. Never Never was a lot better, I just seemed to connect more with the characters and the story itself! 🙂

Absolutely! I think it’s being re-released/published in the UK this week, so hopefully some more people will pick it up and run with it. I managed to finish it, but it just wasn’t what I was expecting – I found I didn’t have any emotional connection to the characters either. 😦 I can’t even review it because I have so little to say, lol. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that one, then! 🙂 x

Huh, I didn’t know that. I got an eARC from NetGalley, and though I enjoyed the book it wasn’t enough to buy a copy myself when it was released.
In that case I do hope you enjoy Never Never, I’d be interested to see your review for that one! 😀

Yeah GR said it was first published in february, but that could just be the states I suppose! That’s fair enough! I might buy a physical copy at YALC to get signed but I don’t think I would ordinarily as it’s not the sort of book I would reread! Thanks – hopefully I will get round to doing it! 🙂 x

Or it could be a re-released? Honestly who knows but it’s the same for me, although I really enjoyed it it’s not the usual book I’d pick up to read again one day.

Oh it’s a brilliant book, I won’t say it’s my favourite magical realism one but it’s definitely up there. I really hope you love it too.
I think if you enjoy time travel books Waging War, the whole series actually, is one I would highly recommend. Seriously there aren’t enough amazing things I can say about it! 😀
Thanks Astra! 🙂

Actually I don’t think I’ve read one in a while either. It seemed like there was loads released earlier this year but not as many now! I hope you love it then, it’s an amazing series and possibly my favourite time travel one as well! 😀

Never, Never sounds like an interesting adaptation of Peter Pan. Definitely something I’ll be looking into 😀

Of all the Peter Pan retellings I’ve read it’s been my favourite. It kind of runs parallel to the original story, but this time we see things through Captain Hooks eyes from the beginning to the end. I though it was an amazing books so if you do pick it up I hope you love it! 🙂

They’re all amazing books I think (and if you like time travel I would definitely recommend Into the Dim and Waging War) and they definitely deserve more recognition than what they currently have. It would be great if you did read and love them too, I really hope you do! 😀

Eep, I actually haven’t read anything from this list but A Fierce and Subtle Poison is one I’m curious about!
This TTT has made me realise that it’s reaaaaallyyy hard to get recognition as an author and even to get people to read your book, haha. I just kept thinking that if each rating is made by someone who has bought the book on, say, Kindle, then it’d only have made $8000 for the publisher assuming the book has 2000 ratings and each e-copy costs $4. Take away the publisher’s revenue, that’ll make the author like $800 – less, even. It’s crazy. OK sorry this is a whole tangent for a whole other discussion but I’m just amazed!

Well they’re underrated books for a reason I guess! 😀 And I would recommend AFASP, while it isn’t my favourite magical realism book it is still a good story and well worth reading in my opinion 🙂
Oh yes, I am definitely getting more of an idea after posting my , and reading other people’s, TTT posts for this week. There are so many books which I thought for sure would have loads of rating and recognition which ended up having very few! I won’t say I’m good at maths but from what you mentioned it must be really hard to make a living as an author, especially if that’s all you want to do!
Nah that’s all right. Now I’ve started thinking of it in that way I’m a little amazed as well!

I’ll have to check out Waging War– I love anything to do with time travel! I was surprised by how many books I’ve read under 2000 Goodreads ratings as well. There are so many underrated books out there!

Yeah I was the same, some books I thought for sure would have more than 2000 ratings and I was shocked to see that they didn’t!

I really love all her books (though I do need to catch up on some of her latest releases!)
Oh I feel that way sometimes, there are some topics that always seem to take me ages to come up with ten but others which are a lot easier. Still it would be great if you did take part in this one. I know I’d love to see your TTT posts! 😀

Oh look, 10 more books for my TBR! 😀 I think A Fierce and Subtle Poison is going to have a lot more ratings soon. I’ve heard such great things about it, and yours isn’t the only list I’ve seen it on today, so I believe there will be a nice influx of readers soon. Awesome list!

That’s pretty much what I said when I saw everyone’s TTT post for this week! Oh I hope it does, I mean like I said AFASP isn’t my favourite magical realism book but it is still a great story and I think it deserves a lot more recognition. Thanks! 😀
