The year is half over and I can’t believe it’s come and gone so quickly. The first half of 2016 has been a bit of mixed bag for me but there’s still hope for the second half of the year and I’m excited to see what it brings.
The mini reading slump I seemed to have last month is well and truly over, which you’ll probably be able to tell when you see how many books I read and reviewed this month. I got though a few books which have been on my to-read list for quite a while now, I feel like this post could be re-named ‘Series I Finally Got Around to Reading’, and a lot of them were five star reads as well.
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
It’s no secret that I love V.E. Schwab’s work. All of her books have gone to the top of my favourite’s list, and I am eagerly anticipating the release of everything she has in the works at the moment, and Vicious was no exception. It took me a while to get around to this book; ever since I joined WordPress I’ve seen mentions of Vicious and plenty of people have recommended it to me. It was worth the wait though; the story, the characters, the world-building were all brilliantly written and Vicious has now become my second favourite of V.E. Schwab’s books/series.
Shatter Me Trilogy
This is a series that wasn’t really on my radar until I saw it on WordPress, and I saw it everywhere so I thought I might as well pick it up—the fact that the covers were gorgeous certainly didn’t hurt. While the first book was a bit lacklustre in my opinion the series got so much better with the second, and by the time I started reading the third book I didn’t want it to end. The character development throughout the series is wonderfully done, I fell in love with Juliette, Warner and Kenji as I read their adventures.
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi
Fracture Me by Tahereh Mafi
Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series
Why did it take me so long to get around to these books? How did I not start them before now? These two questions were pretty much constantly running through my mind as I started the Percy Jackson series. I couldn’t get enough of the stories, the Greek myths given a modern twist, and now it’s over I need to get started on the second series as soon as possible. I already have all the books waiting on my bookshelves and a feeling that the Heroes of Olympus series is going to be even better than the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian by Rick Riordan
This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab
This book was a highly anticipated release for me; it’s V.E. Schwab after all, was there any doubt I would be desperate to get my hands on it? While This Savage Song wasn’t the best of hers I’ve read, that honour belongs to the Shades of Magic series with Vicious coming in a close second, it was still a solid story. I loved reading about the monsters who made their home in Verity, the different species and how they all came to be, and I cannot wait for the next book; there’s still so much left to discover.
A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston
This was a re-read for me; after I discovered a companion novel is being released at the end of this year I had to go back to the book that started it all. A Thousand Nights was just as amazing the second time as it was the first. The writing was beautiful, lyrical, moving, the plot and the characters grabbed my attention from the first page and refused to let go until the last. This book is more of a literary fiction one than YA but there are elements of both genres within its pages. Overall it’s a brilliant story and succeeded in making me even more excited for the release of Spindle.
I took part in three Top Ten Tuesday topics over the course of June.
Top Ten Anticipated Reads for the Second Half of 2016
Top Ten Favourite 2016 Releases So Far
I featured five books as part of the Waiting on Wednesday tag.
RoseBlood by A.G. Howard
A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi
A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi
Spindle by E.K. Johnston
I got through a lot of books during June, and hopefully I’ll get through even more in July. As it is now officially summer I’m going to make a start on my summer to-read list which is packed with YA contemporary books, each filled with travel, wanderlust and romance. I’m hoping to spend whole afternoon in the sun in my garden with a cool drink and my Kindle.
Wow, Beth you had such a great reading AND reviewing month. I so admire your effort to write reviews for everything you read. I’m so bad at that 😂 I’m still seriously so happy that you loved the Percy Jackson books. I can’t wait to read Vicious and This Savage Song!!

Thanks Lauren! 😀
It was definitely one of my better months reading but I think after the mini-slump I went through last month I kind of needed it! 🙂
Oh I thought the Percy Jackson books were amazing, and I am so so excited to start the Heroes of Olympus series as soon as I can!
I know that feeling 🙂 I hope you love both Vicious and This Savage Song, they are amazing books, but honestly should we ever expect anything else from V.E. Schwab? 😀

Wow, you managed to read sooo many books! That’s amazing! 😀
I think you know how much I adore Vicious as well (as I do keep mentioning it all the time). I plan on reading A Darker Shade of Magic really soon (like over the weekend) and I’m super exited about it!
I seriously need to finish the Shatter Me trilogy – so far I have only read the first book and the first novella. 🙂

Oh yes, everyone seemed to love Vicious and now I finally understand why, because it’s an amazing book! 🙂 Ohh the Shades of Magic series is my all-time favourite so I really REALLY hope you love ADSOM.
I really enjoyed the Shatter Me series, I think it got so much better after the first book so you’ve got the best to come in my opinion! 😀

I’m sure I’m going to LOVE it! (As I have loved everything that I have read by Victoria Schwab. And that books sounds absolutely wonderful!) 🙂
That’s what everyone says. I enjoyed the first one quiet a bit, though I did have some problems with it. I’m very exited to be reading Unravel Me soon (I need more Warner in my life)!

Oh I’m the same, whenever a new V.E. Schwab book is released I just know I’m going to love it, Vicious was the same and so was This Savage Song and I know ACOL will be when it’s released! 😀
Oh there is a lot more Warner in Unravel Me, and I think you’ll really enjoy the second book as well, especially if you liked the first one! 🙂

She is seriously a fantastic author! ❤
Yesss! So happy to hear there is a lot more of him! Now I'm even more exited to read it! 🙂

Yep, she’s shot right to the top of my favourites list as well, anything she releases I have to buy now, no matter what it is.
I think if you liked Warner then you’ll enjoy the second and third books because there’s a lot more of him. Also the character development he goes through throughout the whole series is just brilliant! 😀

Same! 😀 Though I don’t tend to read them immediately, as I like to “save” the books I know I’m going to love for later. (I’m trying to break this habit of mine and just read them!) 🙂

Oh man I don’t think I could really do that! Before new books are released I do avoid them on Goodreads and WordPress just because I don’t want to see any spoilers at all but I don’t think I could save a book for later that I’ve been waiting for for ages to be released! 😀

I honestly have no idea why I do it. I mean I’m super exited to read the book – until it gets into my hands. Then I want to “save” it for later… I’m also counting this as a bad habit, as this way the book I really want to read just end up lying around. Soo I’m trying to break this habit now! 😀

Oh I wouldn’t say it’s a bad habit; I guess sometimes it can be nice to know you have a book you know you’re going to love ‘saved’ for later. I can’t resist starting books as soon as I get my hands on them, but a lot I wait for for a long time so I feel like I’ve ‘saved’ them enough just in the run up to their release! 😀

You are right, it’s nice to know that I have a book I’m going to love “saved” and can enjoy it later. 🙂 I want to break this habit mainly because it will help me with finishing all the series that I have started, as that is one of my goals as well!

Sometimes you just want to read something you know you’re going to love, so then it can be nice to have saved books. 🙂
I have a few series I need to finish, it’ll be nice to get around to them sometime soon! I will wish you good luck though 😀

Thank you, I managed to get through some great books this month, a few of which have gone on my favourites list!
I have a long commute to and from work every day, and I’m a fast reader anyway so it gives me a lot of time to get through books each month! 😀

Wow, you definitely did a lot this month. I’m actually quite jealous :p Also, the covers of all your books are beautiful 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you get done this next month 🙂

Thanks! I feel like this is definitely one of the better months I’ve had when it comes to reading 😀 Also covers are kind of the first thing that draws me to new books but some of these are my favourites! 🙂

Thanks Fatima! 😀
Ha, yeah, I do manage to get through a lot of books but I have a three hour commute to and from work each day. I can literally get through a book a day during the week; the only issue I have is finding the time to write reviews for them all! 🙂

A 3 hour commute?! Wow! Of course you’d get a lot of reading done 🙂 That’s very true! So far though, you’ve been posting a lot of reviews, and that’s pretty incredible 🙂

It’s the one good thing about my commute, ever since I started working in London I’ve gotten through so much more on my to-read list than I ever did before! 😀
Thanks! 🙂 I try and keep a mixture of TTT, WoW, tags and reviews on my blog but every so often I realise it’s been a while since I posted a review! 🙂

Haha that’s so amazing! I’d get through my whole TBR with a commute like that. I still think you post a lot of reviews, so don’t worry about that 🙂

I don’t think I’ll ever manage to get through my whole TBR list, just because it is soooo long, and I add new books every day!
Ahh that’s good to know! 😀

Oh it was a brilliant series wasn’t it? There is a big part of me that wants to go back and re-read the books even though I just finished them! 😀
And same here, I have high expectations for Furthermore and I can’t wait for it to be released! 🙂

I basically finished the books and then re read them all over again 😂😂 Mafi is also an auto buy for me 🙂

I do like to leave a little space in between my re-reads, but then there are certain series I always want to read again as soon as I’m finished them. Shatter Me was one of them! 😀
