June Book Haul

This post should probably be called how I broke my book buying ban one month in, but looking on the bright side I still made it one month without buying anything new. I also managed to stick to my monthly budget for the first time ever so it’s not all bad.

And of course I have some gorgeous new books.

June Book Haul

I didn’t go too crazy while on my book buying ban however. I only brought four books this month myself—five if you count my Owl Crate box this month. One other was an eARC from NetGalley which I am so excited to start reading, and the other seven were birthday presents. I think I definitely picked the right month to go on a book buying ban, because it was my birthday in the middle of June I still got quite a few books without having to spend any money myself.

Birthday Presents

June Book Haul, #1

What do you do when you want to start a new series but are in the middle of a book buying ban? If you’re me then you ask your sister to buy them for you for your birthday, and of course she did. I pretty much devoured these books one after the other, and now I’m finished I’ve already ordered the Heroes of Olympus series. I have a feeling once I’ve finished all five of those I’ll order the Magnus Chase book, and then the Kane Chronicles, and then the Trials of Apollo book. Rick Riordan is definitely an author who is now on my auto-buy list.

June Book Haul, #2

These two books were brought for me by one of my best friends. Uprooted has been on my to-read list for ages. It’s one of those books I keep meaning to get around to but never have and I’m not quite sure why; it sounds like a blend of fantasy and fairy tale, and it sounds like the kind of book I’m going to love. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is a book I have seen nothing but amazing reviews for, and I need to read more sci-fi so I’m only hoping it’s as good as everyone seems to think it is.

Amazon

June Book Haul, #3

As soon as I saw V.E. Schwab had a new book coming out it went to the top of my to-buy list, and I’ve had This Savage Song pre-ordered ever since it was available on Amazon. Both Rebel of the Sands and The Square Root of Summer were pure impulse buys, mainly because of the covers. I’ve already read and loved Rebel of the Sands and I have high expectations for The Square Root of Summer. I never planned to buy A Thousand Nights in hardcover. Instead I was going to wait for it to be released in paperback at the end of this month, but then I saw the gorgeous hardcover edition and I couldn’t resist.

Owl Crate

June Book Haul, #4

  • My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…

Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…

Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.

The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?

NetGalley eARCs

Nevernight

I rarely request ARCs but when I saw Nevernight on NetGalley I couldn’t resist. It’s only recently that this book even made it onto my radar despite me having read, and loved, the book Jay Kristoff wrote with Amie Kaufman. Then I saw some of the pre-release reviews for Nevernight raving about the book and it flew to the top of my to-read list. When my request for the ARC got approved I was so excited to get the chance to read this book that little bit sooner.

I’m not going to go on a book buying ban again, at least not for a while yet. I already have some books pre-ordered for the next few months and there are even more being released later this year I need to gets my hands on as soon as so I feel I would just be setting myself up to fail. Instead my new goal is to stick to my monthly budget.

  1. Oh my gosh, so many beautiful books 😍😍 I’m loving all those Percy Jackson books and I’m so happy you enjoyed the series and that Rick is now on your autobuy list! I can’t wait to hear what you think of all the other books when you get to them. I really want to read The Long Way To A Small and Angry Planet. The cover is so pretty. I’m super jealous of that Nevernight ARC, haha. I requested but get denied.

    1. Yep, I’m so happy with my haul this month.
Oh Rick is definitely in my auto-buy list, my copies of the Heroes of Olympus series arrived yesterday and I have plans to buy The Hidden Oracle later this month as well. I really just want to get my hands on everything he’s released so far so I can start reading them all! 😀
I’ll be posting reviews after I’ve read the rest, but I’m really excited to get started on The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I’ve heard great things about it so far! 😀
Oh that’s shame, honestly I didn’t think I’d get it either just because it’s bound to be a really popular request! 🙂

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is one I discovered through WordPress, I saw a glowing review for it and knew I had to have it, so I got my friend to buy it for me for my birthday! 🙂
      Thanks! ❤

      2. Ahh, that’s a shame, but I’ll definitely check out your review. I’d be interested in seeing your thoughts on it and what it was that made you hate the book.
I can’t wait to get started on it! It’s been on my to-read list for ages and now I finally have a chance to start reading it! 😀

    1. Thanks! ❤ Oh the ones I've read so far have been amazing so I have high hopes for the ones I haven't gotten around to yet! I'll be posting reviews as soon as I finish each so you'll be able to see my reviews, hopefully the first will be up soon! 🙂

    1. Thanks Marie! 😀
I’ve started reading The Square Root of Summer today and I am enjoying it so far. Hopefully the rest of the book will be the same, although I haven’t actually read any other reviews for it yet. Either way my review will be posted sometime next week so you’ll be able to see all of what I thought of it! 😀

  3. Great haul, Beth! You’ve got so many great books this month. I’ve been seeing My Lady Jane everywhere but I’m not sure what to think of it. It sounds like historical fiction packaged in a modern, YA way? I’ll be holding off getting it myself until more reviews come in. 😀

Also can’t wait for your review on Nevernight – it’s one of my most anticipated future release and I’m excited to know what it’s all about. ❤

    1. Thanks Reg! Yeah I’ve got plenty of books to get started on next (well this month now) month 😀
I’ve seen it a lot as well, and seen some great reviews about it. It sounds to me like a mixture of YA historical fiction with fantasy blended in. I hope I enjoy it either way I’ll be posting a review once I’m finished.
Ohh I can’t wait to get started on that one, it’s one of my most anticipated books so I was so excited to get an ARC copy of it! I still have the hardcover pre-ordered though! 😀

      1. I knooow, I’m in the same boat! Here’s hoping our TBRs won’t kill us and we come out unscathed by the end of the month, haha. 😛

The hardcover would be BEAUTIFUL for Nevernight. There’s a local signing event at the end of July that I’m contemplating on going to, just because I’ve never been to one and maybe it’ll jog up my opinion on author meet-ups. 😛

      2. I think if my TBR was all physical books instead of some Kindle, some need to buy and some waiting to be released it would kill me! 🙂
It’s why I’ve pre-ordered it and I can’t wait for it to arrive even though I have an ARC for it already! Ohh a signing could be fun, and even if it doesn’t improve your opinion of them at least you could say you went still! 🙂

      3. Illuminae was the first book of his I read (well, kinda considering it isn’t just his book) but yes Nevernight sounds amazing. I’m hoping to get started on it tomorrow.
In that case I hope you have a great time at the signing! 😀

      4. I did actually really enjoy it, it was different to a lot of sci-fi books just in the format of it all! I didn’t start it when it was first released so I feel a lot of the hype died down between its release and me finally picking it up.
Maybe when you’re next in a sci-fi mood, I would highly recommend Illuminae! 😀

  4. Yay for book hauls! And I pretty much agree with you about the sibling thing– I always ask my older brother to buy me books (and fortunately he does but sometimes he doesn’t). Yay for siblings!

    1. My favourite part of the month, when my books arrive from Amazon! 😀
Oh it was definitely helpful getting books for my birthday this month. I didn’t have to pay for them myself and I still got a load of new ones for my bookshelves! 😀 Yay for siblings right? 🙂

  5. Oh my glob I just laughed so hard at the synopsis for “My Lady Jane”. The part about the horse was so perfect. Immediately went on my “to read”. Also Jay Kristoff is excellent! I will absolutely have to read Nevernight, it sounds excellent.

ALSO HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! ~dancing in circles~. Did you get social media yet?

PS my only auto buy authors are JK Rowling and SJM, so I might reevaluate is Riordan is on yours. I think I need to board this ship.

      1. What is this like 5 part conversation we have going? LOL. And it sounds like you’d definitely like it! Review it first and I’ll consider it 😉

    1. It sounds really funny doesn’t it?! I’ve already seen some amazing reviews for it and I can’t wait to start it myself! The horse bit was hilarious, definitely not something I’ve read in any other YA book before! XD
I will post a review for Nevernight as soon as I can 😀 and thank you! ❤ I haven't got social media yet but I have plans to create at least a Goodreads account this weekend!
Riordan is definitely on mine, I already have the Heroes of Olympus series on my bookshelves and pretty sure I'm going to order the rest of his books very soon! 😀
