Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite Book BFF’s

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. It was a free pick this week so I chose a Top Ten Tuesday topic from a long while ago; Top Ten Book BFF’s.

The first group of friends I remember reading and falling in love with was Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. I followed their adventures through the seven years they attended Hogwarts and fought off Lord Voldemort and his followers. Ever since then I’ve loved reading any kind of close friendship between two characters, so for this week’s free pick I decided to feature some of my favourite BFF’s from recent books I’ve read.

Blue and the Raven Boys
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater

The relationship between Blue and the Raven Boys is the backbone of the whole story and of their quest to find Glendower. They argue and butt heads more often than not but by the end they always come back together.

“Blue was perfectly aware that it was possible to have a friendship that wasn’t all-encompassing, that wasn’t blinding, deafening, maddening, quickening. It was just that now that she’d had this kind, she didn’t want the other.”

Cinder and Thorne
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I loved the banter between Cinder and Thorne. From the second they were introduced reading their adventures was the highlight of the series. No matter what the situation their sniping back and forth never failed to lighten the mood.

A relieved grin filled up Thorne’s face. “We’re having another moment, aren’t we?”
“If by a moment, you mean me not wanting to strangle you for the first time since we met, then I guess we are.”

Juliette and Kenji
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

For Juliette Kenji was so much more than just her friend. He was her mentor, one of her firmest supporters, and someone who could pull her back up whenever she was down. After everything she faced in the asylum and before I think Kenji was someone Juliette needed in her life.

“That’s because you’re not fragile,” Kenji says. “If anything, everyone needs to protect themselves from you. You’re like a freaking beast,” he says. Then adds, “I mean, you know—like, a cute beast. A little beast that tears shit up and breaks the earth and sucks the life out of people.”

Kell and Rhy
Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

One of the first things I loved about this series was the relationship between Rhy and Kell, they were brothers and best friends and it showed in their every interaction; Rhy was the fun-loving carefree spirit and Kell the voice of reason when one was needed. One of the best things about A Gathering of Shadows was getting the chance to see the two interact more.

“Rhy wanted to shout, to shake Kell and tell him not to shy away from danger on his account, but charge toward it, even if it meant getting hurt.
Because Rhy deserved that pain.
He could see his brother suffocating beneath the weight of it. Of him.
And he hated it.
And this gesture – this foolish, mad, dangerous gesture – was the best he could do.
The most he could do.”

Emily and Sloane
Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Even though we didn’t see Sloane for most of the book, only in flashbacks seen through Emily’s eyes, it was obvious the close friendship the two shared. Nothing, not secrets or boys or distance, could tear them apart.

“I somehow knew that the particulars didn’t matter. She was my heart, she was half of me, and nothing, certainly not a few measly hundred miles, was ever going to change that.”

Jude and Noah
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

Despite the rift that tore them apart before they were sixteen the relationship between Jude and Noah was so brilliantly written. When they were thirteen they lived inside each other’s pockets, and even though they didn’t have that closeness at sixteen they were never far from the other’s thoughts.

“This is what I want: I want to grab my brother’s hand and run back through time, losing years like coats falling from our shoulders.”

Meda and Jo
Soul Eaters by Eliza Crewe

Forget the relationship between Jo and Chi or between Meda and Armand, the friendship between Jo and Meda was my favourite part of this whole series. Despite their differences their loyalty to one another was solid no matter what they faced.

“What do you say to your best friend when you stand at the gates of the gates of hell? Nothing. If it’s your best friend, she already knows.”

Kaz and his crew
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Kaz has already earned most of their loyalty but as they travel together, attempting a heist that no other man would ever dream of undertaking, they start to become closer. By the end they are a real team instead of a group of people pulled together for the sake of one job.

Jesper knocking his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost.”
Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass.”
“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

Nick and Paige
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

The relationship between Paige and Nick starts off as unrequited love on Paige’s part, but as she grows after her experiences she starts to move past that. The two have a older brother/younger sister, protector/protectee bond; Nick is ready to follow Paige anywhere, believing in her when no one else does

“You saved me, Nick. Sooner or later I would have lost my mind. I had to know, or I would have always felt like an outsider. You made me feel like I was part of something, part of a lot of things actually. I’ll never be able to repay you for that.”

Arin and Roshar
The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski

In spite of their common goal Arin and Roshar have very little in common, but I think that’s what made them such good friends. Roshar is the solemn voice of reason when Arin is too blinded by his emotions, but at the same time he can draw Arin from his seriousness. I loved every scene with Roshar, but seeing him and Arin become close friends was brilliant to read.

“Choose what ever suite suits you best,” Arin said. “But please: keep that tiger in his cage.”
“Arin’s a kitten,” Roshar protested. Purely for the purpose of annoying Arin, it seemed, Roshar had named the tiger after him. “He’s sweet-tempered and polite and very good-looking…unlike some people I could mention.”
