Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite Book BFF’s

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. It was a free pick this week so I chose a Top Ten Tuesday topic from a long while ago; Top Ten Book BFF’s.

The first group of friends I remember reading and falling in love with was Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. I followed their adventures through the seven years they attended Hogwarts and fought off Lord Voldemort and his followers. Ever since then I’ve loved reading any kind of close friendship between two characters, so for this week’s free pick I decided to feature some of my favourite BFF’s from recent books I’ve read.

Top Ten Tuesday #27

Blue and the Raven Boys
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater

The relationship between Blue and the Raven Boys is the backbone of the whole story and of their quest to find Glendower. They argue and butt heads more often than not but by the end they always come back together.

“Blue was perfectly aware that it was possible to have a friendship that wasn’t all-encompassing, that wasn’t blinding, deafening, maddening, quickening. It was just that now that she’d had this kind, she didn’t want the other.”

Cinder and Thorne
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I loved the banter between Cinder and Thorne. From the second they were introduced reading their adventures was the highlight of the series. No matter what the situation their sniping back and forth never failed to lighten the mood.

A relieved grin filled up Thorne’s face. “We’re having another moment, aren’t we?”
“If by a moment, you mean me not wanting to strangle you for the first time since we met, then I guess we are.”

Juliette and Kenji
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

For Juliette Kenji was so much more than just her friend. He was her mentor, one of her firmest supporters, and someone who could pull her back up whenever she was down. After everything she faced in the asylum and before I think Kenji was someone Juliette needed in her life.

“That’s because you’re not fragile,” Kenji says. “If anything, everyone needs to protect themselves from you. You’re like a freaking beast,” he says. Then adds, “I mean, you know—like, a cute beast. A little beast that tears shit up and breaks the earth and sucks the life out of people.”

Kell and Rhy
Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

One of the first things I loved about this series was the relationship between Rhy and Kell, they were brothers and best friends and it showed in their every interaction; Rhy was the fun-loving carefree spirit and Kell the voice of reason when one was needed. One of the best things about A Gathering of Shadows was getting the chance to see the two interact more.

“Rhy wanted to shout, to shake Kell and tell him not to shy away from danger on his account, but charge toward it, even if it meant getting hurt.
Because Rhy deserved that pain.
He could see his brother suffocating beneath the weight of it. Of him.
And he hated it.
And this gesture – this foolish, mad, dangerous gesture – was the best he could do.
The most he could do.”

Emily and Sloane
Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Even though we didn’t see Sloane for most of the book, only in flashbacks seen through Emily’s eyes, it was obvious the close friendship the two shared. Nothing, not secrets or boys or distance, could tear them apart.

“I somehow knew that the particulars didn’t matter. She was my heart, she was half of me, and nothing, certainly not a few measly hundred miles, was ever going to change that.”

Jude and Noah
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

Despite the rift that tore them apart before they were sixteen the relationship between Jude and Noah was so brilliantly written. When they were thirteen they lived inside each other’s pockets, and even though they didn’t have that closeness at sixteen they were never far from the other’s thoughts.

“This is what I want: I want to grab my brother’s hand and run back through time, losing years like coats falling from our shoulders.”

Meda and Jo
Soul Eaters by Eliza Crewe

Forget the relationship between Jo and Chi or between Meda and Armand, the friendship between Jo and Meda was my favourite part of this whole series. Despite their differences their loyalty to one another was solid no matter what they faced.

“What do you say to your best friend when you stand at the gates of the gates of hell? Nothing. If it’s your best friend, she already knows.”

Kaz and his crew
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Kaz has already earned most of their loyalty but as they travel together, attempting a heist that no other man would ever dream of undertaking, they start to become closer. By the end they are a real team instead of a group of people pulled together for the sake of one job.

Jesper knocking his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost.”
Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass.”
“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

Nick and Paige
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

The relationship between Paige and Nick starts off as unrequited love on Paige’s part, but as she grows after her experiences she starts to move past that. The two have a older brother/younger sister, protector/protectee bond; Nick is ready to follow Paige anywhere, believing in her when no one else does

“You saved me, Nick. Sooner or later I would have lost my mind. I had to know, or I would have always felt like an outsider. You made me feel like I was part of something, part of a lot of things actually. I’ll never be able to repay you for that.”

Arin and Roshar
The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski

In spite of their common goal Arin and Roshar have very little in common, but I think that’s what made them such good friends. Roshar is the solemn voice of reason when Arin is too blinded by his emotions, but at the same time he can draw Arin from his seriousness. I loved every scene with Roshar, but seeing him and Arin become close friends was brilliant to read.

“Choose what ever suite suits you best,” Arin said. “But please: keep that tiger in his cage.”
“Arin’s a kitten,” Roshar protested. Purely for the purpose of annoying Arin, it seemed, Roshar had named the tiger after him. “He’s sweet-tempered and polite and very good-looking…unlike some people I could mention.”

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know who some of your favourite book BFF’s are or what you picked for this week’s free-for-all.

  1. I just read The Raven Boys and really liked it. I like Scarlet better than Cinder (as books) even though I liked Cinder better as a character. I like the team of her, Thorne & Iko.

    1. It’s a brilliant series, do you have plans to start The Dream Thieves soon? I was the same actually, prefers Cinder as a character but Scarlet as a book. I do think the series gets better and better as it goes on though.
Yes I could read nothing but Cinder, Thorne and Iko’s adventures and be happy with that! 🙂
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT

      1. Oh I know that feeling, so many books on my TBR list and not enough time to read them! 😀
I hope you love The Dream Thieves and Cress when you start them both, it’ll be worth the wait when you do get to them! 🙂

    1. It seems to be the one most people have read out of all the books I picked this week, but I think Blue and the Raven Boys are the ultimate friendship goals, at least they are for me! 😀
Same here actually, one of the things I loved the most about this book was the friendship between them all, it just made it such a unique story. 😀

  2. Oooooo some great recs here Beth! Your posts always want to make me head straight for my Amazon account haha. 😣 I love that quote you chose for Jude and Noah, it was one of the ones that I thought was most beautiful when I read IGYTS. Can’t wait to read the 2nd Raven Cycle book and find out how Blue and the boys’ relationship develops. 😊

    1. Thanks Sammie! 🙂
Oh I always feel that way when I see TTT posts, and book tags for that matter, my bank account definitely hates me for joining WordPress! 🙂
There were so many beautiful quotes for IGYTS, it was hard picking just one! Oh I think the series honestly gets better and better with each book so you’re definitely in for a treat when you start the second book (and then the third and then the fourth) 😀

      1. No worries! 🙂 Hahaha my bank account definitely knows that feeling. I think my Amazon account goes into overdrive at the beginning of the month. I know, right? I used IGYTS for my 3 Days, 3 Quotes challenge a while back and it was SO hard to choose. Such a beautifully written novel. Eeeek, that’s good to hear, can’t wait!

      2. Yeah mine does after I’ve been paid, first thing I do is go on Amazon and order all the books I’ve put in my basket over the course of the month! 🙂
There are so many quoteable passages in that book, her writing is amazing so I can’t wait to read whatever she comes out with next! 🙂

  3. Yay, we chose the same topic for this TTT. 😀 I only have The Lunar Chronicles and The Raven Cycle on my list from your picks, though. Both these are my absolute favorite series and what I love in them is how all the characters in their group – because I included the whole squad from TLC on my list – are super-unique and different from the others, yet that is what makes them work so well as a group. Thorne and Cinder’s friendship is definitely one of the best in the series. I totally forgot about Arin and Roshar, but they’re, without doubt, list-worthy friends. 😀
    Wonderful picks!

    1. Great minds think alike and all that! I actually didn’t pick this topic until Tuesday morning I think, I had so much trouble actually coming up with something for freebie week!
Oh yes that’s a really good point, both The Raven Cycle and The Lunar Chronicles have so many unique characters but the way the authors write them really makes them connect with one another. I think it’s what makes them such a great example of well written friendships between characters!
I loved reading every scene between Thorne and Cinder, the back and forth between them was hilarious at times!
I nearly forgot Roshar and Arin too, but I needed one more to make ten and suddenly, while trawling through my read list, I remembered 😀
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT

  4. Yess! I love this topic so much. Friendships are my favourite. Blue and The Raven Boys is one of my all time favourites. It’s so incredibly magical. I love them so much. I’ve only read ADSoM, but I love Kell and Rhy sooooo incredibly much already. I can’t wait to see more of them in AGoS!!!

    1. Same here! Sometimes if a friendship is written well enough I will enjoy it more than the romantic relationship part of the story!
Blue and the Raven Boys are pretty much my ultimate friendship goals! Definitely magical 😀 And yes Rhy and Kell too. There’s so much more of them in the second book so I think you’ll really love it! 😀

  5. I love the intricacies between the different relationships within the Dregs, though admittedly, Jasper and Wylan might be my favourite to follow (with Kaz and Inej in a close second) — unless we’re accounting for potential ships and stuff then both of these don’t apply haha. But yes I love the bromance between Kell and Rhy as much as I love the …thing-mance between Kell and his coat!

    Cheers,
    Joey via. thoughts and afterthoughts.

    1. Oh same here, as far as character development goes there was so much of it in Six of Crows and honestly one of the reasons I can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom is to see where they go next! I loved Jesper and Wylan as well, though I would have loved it if we’d seen more of them (but maybe in book two!)
I think Rhy and Kell are my favourite of V.E. Schwab’s characters! Also if I had a coat like Kell’s I’d definitely have a thing-mance with it as well! 😀

  6. 100% with you for Kell/Rhy, but I guess that’s not a big surprise. I just LOVE how they look out for each other (tbh more Kell than Rhy, I think) and their more light-hearted interactions were usually funny too.

I am waaaay behind on The Winner’s Curse. I need to get on that series quick!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Not really, everyone who is a fan of V.E. Schwab would probably agree! But yes there every interaction was amazing, like you said the way they look out for one another, but also in the second book the way Rhy feels about what Kell did to save him, and the burden it’s placed on his brother (because in Rhy’s mind they are brothers)
Have you started the series at all then? All the books are released now so you won’t have to wait if you really love the series (and I hope you do, it’s a favourite of mine!)

      1. Ahhh yeees, the angst! My bf thinks Rhy is super spoiled and whiny but I can kind of understand why he’d be angsting and brooding around about Kell, haha.

I haven’t started the series at all! I think I’m just having trouble finding a good time to binge it (along with other series I want to read).

        Liked by 1 person

      2. So much angst, but I guess you expect it a little bit don’t you? After everything they faced and now with the repercussions both Rhy and Kell are feeling.
Well in that case hopefully you’ll find time to binge it (and all the other series you want to read as well!) The first book does start off a little slow but I think the series gets so much better with the second and third books! 🙂

      3. For sure! I’m SUPER excited for ACOL and I hoooope that it’ll be even further explored and that there’ll be more Kell/Lila because I think they’re my OTP now. 😛

I’m glad you told me that it starts a little slow! I was definitely expecting action (I dunno why, from that cover…) but I’ve been told several times that it’s actually more political intrigue. Now I just gotta wait for the right mood to read something like that. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Oh I would give anything to have a copy of ACOL in my hands right now, literally anything! I think based on the way AGOS ended there will be more Kell and Lila, yep, definitely my OTP at the moment as well 🙂
The second book definitely has more political intrigue than action. There is action in the first book but the very beginning of the story takes the time to set up the situation and the characters before launching into anything. I’d definitely recommend waiting until you’re in the right mood for this series! 😀

  7. This is going to sound crazy, but I haven’t read a single book on this list. 🙈 They’re all on my TBR and some of them I even own. I just haven’t gotten around to reading them. I’m so indecisive when I pick books. And I never stop buying. 😂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. In that case I would highly recommend you pick them up ASAP. A lot of them are all-time favourites of mine so I pretty much highly recommend them to anyone and everyone I come across 😀
But I know what you mean, I have books on my TBR list that I own and still haven’t picked up, and it’s because I never stop buying either! 😀

  8. Awesome list! I cannot wait to delve into The Raven Cycle and fall in love with the friendship between the main characters as much as everyone else 🙂

    1. Thanks 😀
Oh The Raven Cycle is a brilliant series, although the friendship between the characters is a major part of the story there is so much more I’m sure you’ll enjoy! Trust me by the time you get to the last book you won’t want it to end! 😀

  9. The friendship between Blue and the Raven Boys is one of my all-time favorites. It makes my heart happy just thinking about it ❤ This list rocks and has definitely added some books to my TBR pile. I chose a different topic for this week, but if I had to pick my favorite book BFFs, I'd go with Rhys + his inner circle (Mor, Amren, Cassian, & Azriel) from A Court of Mist and Fury, or Will + his Araluen companions from the Ranger's Apprentice series. Plus Blue and the boys, of course 🙂

    1. For me it’s one of the best friendships I’ve read in a YA book! So definitely my favourite as well. 😀 When I decided on this topic they were the first I picked! 🙂
Oh Rhys and his companions in ACOMAF were on my list, but in the end there were other characters and books I wanted to feature before them. Maybe if we get another freebie week I can do a part two and include them in that one, because honestly there are so many great bookish BFF’s out there and I only featured a small fraction! I haven’t read the Ranger’s Apprentice series but now you’ve mentioned it I may have to check it out! 😀

      1. I would love to see what other book friendships you’re fond of. Sometimes it feels like you’ve really gotta dig for them, due to the two MC’s being in love and ignoring the rest of their friends, or all the friends dating each other. I really highly recommend the Ranger’s Apprentice series – it’s a middle grade book for the first 4 or 5, but you watch the characters age throughout the remainder of the series, and the final one features the main characters as adults. I loved them all to pieces.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Honestly most of my favourites are featured in this weeks TTT post, there are just one of two I missed off. I know what you mean though, I always hate it when you get unrequited love between two friends in a book, I don’t mind friends to lovers but the unrequited angle just bugs me.
I don’t mind middle grade books, I just finished the Percy Jackson series and loved it, I’ll pretty much read anything if the blurb interest me! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

  10. All these books! I need to read them haha. Six of Crows, The Raven cycle and the Shades of the Magic series are high up on that list. Strong friendships gives me even more a reason to pick them up asap 🙂 Great post!

    1. Oh in that case I would highly recommend them all! Six of Crows, The Raven Cycle and Shades of Magic are all ultimate favourites of mine, and not just because of the strong friendships included (though in The Raven Boys it was definitely a major part of the story)! 😀
Thanks! I hope you love the books you have on your to-read list! 🙂
