Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite 2016 Releases So Far

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Favourite 2016 Releases So Far.

I’ve actually read a lot more books released in 2016 than I originally thought. When I first saw this topic on The Broke and the Bookish blog I thought I’d struggle to find ten; but soon I had ten, fifteen, twenty books released this year that I’d read and loved. There are already more than a few competitors for my top read of 2016 and if the books that are due to be released in the second half of the year are even half as good as I think they will be then there will be a lot more favourites come the end of this year.

Top Ten Tuesday #26

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Check out my review here.

I loved Alexandra Bracken’s Darkest Minds series but for some reason Passenger didn’t make it onto my radar until after it was released. I picked it up because it was a time travel book and I love those, and found once I started I couldn’t put it down. Passenger was amazing from start to finish and now I cannot wait for the second book to be released.

The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry
Check out my review here.

This is another book that didn’t really make it onto my radar until after it was released. Even now I’m still not entirely sure what it was about The Love That Split the World that caught my attention, but whatever it was I’m glad it did. This was a beautiful written and moving love story that had me hooked from the first page till the last.

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig
Check out my review here.

Another time travel book, there were more than a few released this year and this has become another favourite of mine, that I just had to pick up. The concept behind the travel in The Girl From Everywhere was unlike anything I’d read before; the ability the characters had to travel anywhere, even places of myth, as long as they had a map really made this book stand out from the rest.

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
Check out my review here.

Ever since I read The Archived, such a long time ago now, I have loved everything V.E. Schwab has released and A Gathering of Shadows was no exception. The Shades of Magic series is the best of the best, and A Gathering of Shadows was even better than the first book. I couldn’t put it down, and now I cannot wait for the release of the last book. I need to find out what happens next.

The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski
Check out my review here.

I had The Winner’s Trilogy on my to-read list for ages, but it was only after the last book was released that I picked up the series. I binge read all three books because once I started I couldn’t get enough of the story or of Kestrel and Arin’s romance. I was rooting for them from the start and felt The Winner’s Kiss was the perfect ending to their story and the battle they’d been fighting since The Winner’s Curse.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
Check out my review here.

After discovering this book it shot to the top of my to-read list and the top of my most-anticipated-releases list as well. When I got my copy I jumped straight in and devoured the story. It was brilliant, a fast favourite of mine; I loved the characters and their story but above all I loved the world it was set in. There is a companion novel being released next year and it’s already high on my to-read list.

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
Check out my review here.

The Raven Cycle fast became one of my favourite series when I read the first three books back in January, then I began the torturous wait for the last book in the series. The Raven King became one of my most anticipated releases for this year, and luckily it more than lived up to every one of my expectations. It was the perfect ending to one of my favourite series.

The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh
Check out my review here.

This became another of my most anticipated releases for this year after I read, and loved, the first book last year. The Rose and the Dagger is a brilliant story, even better than The Wrath and the Dawn. The stakes were higher, both for Shahrzad and Khalid, but despite everything their relationship  stayed strong. It was a wonderful conclusion to a brilliant story.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
Check out my review here.

I jumped onto the Sarah J. Maas bandwagon really late, but since then I have read and loved all of her books. Her A Court of Thorns and Roses series is my favourite, and A Court of Mist and Fury was the best of the lot. I loved the development of the story, of Feyre’s character, and her relationships. After the way A Court of Mist and Fury ended I need the third book like I need air.

This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab
Check out my review here.

I finished this book earlier today and of course I loved it, it’s by V.E. Schwab after all so there’s no possible other reaction. I had high expectations and all of them were exceeded. The world-building and character development were masterfully done, and although the plot was a little slow to get going I didn’t notice because I was so involved in the characters and their individual stories.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of your favourite 2016 releases have been.

  1. I totally agree with The Winner’s Kiss, The Raven King and ACOMAF. All were amazing reads and I’m still not over them. I have yet to This Savage Song, but I’m hoping to rectify that soon. I’m glad you enjoyed it though.

    1. Oh they are all some of my favourite series, so I was so glad, especially in the case of The Winner’s Kiss and The Raven King, that the end of the series lived up to my expectations.
This Savage Song was such a brilliant book, though I wouldn’t say it was my favourite of everything V.E. Schwab’s books it was still a great story so I’d definitely recommend it! 😀

    1. My feelings match I think, I already want to re-read the whole series from start to finish! I just can’t let it go!
I am so excited for the companion novel for The Star-Touched Queen to be released!
I hope you love the rest, and oh I am thrilled to hear you loved the start of the Shades of Magic series, I can’t wait to see your review for it! 😀

    1. The Raven King is definitely one of my favourites of the lot though 😀 and the rest are amazing as well so I’d recommend picking them up when you get a chance.
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 😀

  2. I need to start reading Schwab’s book soon! There so highly regarded. Those and the Raven Cycle and the ACOTAR series too. I feel so far behind. Haha. Need to read faster to devour all the books.

    1. Oh yes definitely start her books ASAP, she is one of my favourite authors and there has not been one of her books that I haven’t enjoyed! 😀
I would also highly recommend The Raven Cycle and ACOTAR. I wouldn’t worry about being behind though, this way you won’t have to wait for the last book to be released (The Raven Cycle) and you won’t have as long to wait for the next book either, (ACOTAR)!

    1. I really loved The Star-Touched Queen so I hope you do as well, and even though you didn’t like the Darkest Minds I would still definitely recommend Passenger. It’s a completely different genre and story and I enjoyed it so much more than Alexandra Bracken’s first series! 🙂
Ahh that’s a shame about ACOMAF but I guess everyone has different tastes when it comes to books!
      Thanks 😀

  3. So happy to see The Passenger and Girl from Everywhere here – another endorsement! I had been dilly-dallying about putting them on my shelf but no longer 🙂 Also, I’m the last person ever to read the Raven King series which is on every list!! Must change that ASAP. Wonderful list! 🙂

    1. Ohh I loved both of those books, they are two of the best time travel series I’ve started to date! And yay for putting them on your TBR shelf too! 😀
I was pretty late starting The Raven Cycle series, but at least this way you won’t have to wait for the last book to be released. That was torturous for me, I hate waiting for books to be released because I’m just really impatient!
Thanks, I’m glad you liked my picks for this week 😀

    1. In that case these are definitely the books I’d recommend you start next 😀 and obviously they’re on my list this week for a reason so I’m sure you’ll love them as well! 🙂
The Winner’s Curse is brilliant, it does start off a little slow but honestly each book is better and better and by the end well you won’t want the series to end 😀 Also all the books have been released so you won’t have a long wait for the next in the series either! 🙂

      1. It’s the reason I started the series when I did, by that point all the books had been released and I could jump from one straight into the next. I know if I’d have started before the third book was released I wouldn’t have been able to handle the wait for it! 🙂

  4. So many great books on here! I’m glad to hear you loved This Savage Song since it’s one of my more anticipated releases this year as well as The Star Touched Queen which I have yet to start! Pretty much all the rest of these books are on my TBR (or at least the first book in some of these series is)! 🙂

    1. Thanks! Oh This Savage Song was amazing, and one of my most anticipate releases as well so I’m glad it lived up to my expectations! The Star-Touched Queen was brilliant, definitely in the running for my favourite book of the year!
I’m sure you’ll love both of them! 😀 And the same with the other books on this list, obviously they made it on my weeks TTT for a reason 🙂

  5. I’m sooo happy to see that you enjoyed This Savage Song! It makes me even more exited to pick it up! 😀 Can’t wait to read your full review of it!
Also, most of these books are on my TBR list (though I have to read the other books in the series for some first) so I’m very glad to see that you loved them!

    1. God it was so brilliant! I’ve loved all of Schwab’s books and This Savage Song was definitely up there with the best of them. I will post my review tomorrow but I think it will mostly be incoherent praise of the book in general 😀
These are all brilliant books (they made my list this week for a reason) so I am sure you will love them, and the ones that come before for the series books! 😀

  6. Wonderful list, Beth! I’m so excited that This Savage Song made it to your list. I just bought a copy last night and I’m keen on starting it! Great to hear that you had high expectations and all of them were exceeded – that doesn’t happen very often. 😛

    1. Thanks Reg! Oh yes, I think it says a lot that of all the books I’ve read so far this year V.E. Schwab made it on my list twice! This Savage Song was amazing so I’m sure you’ll love it, I honestly couldn’t put it down and I’m pretty sure my review will be all incoherent praise for the book 😀

  7. Completely agree with A Gathering of Shadows, The Raven King and A Court of Mist and Fury! Especially ACOMAF because oh my days that book ❤ Still not over it! The others I haven't read, but most of them are on my TBR 🙂

    1. Oh yes those are my three main favourites, especially ACOMAF. I thought it was so much better than the first book and I can’t wait to see what happens in the third after everything that Feyre and her sisters went through in the last few chapters!
