The ‘I Messed Up’ Book Tag

I am going to be posting tags a little more regularly from now on. Don’t worry I’m not going to bombard everyone’s feed with a tag a day but I do need to start getting through my queue a little quicker than I have been.

And to start off it’s the ‘I Messed Up’ book tag.

I was tagged by Jess at The Mud and Stars Book Blog. Obviously everyone should check out Jess’s original post and her blog, and if you’re not following her already then what are you waiting for? Thank you so much for the tag Jess, I’m sorry it took me a while to get around to it but better late than never I guess.

A character appearance that you misread or imagined differently

The most recent example would be pretty much every character in the Percy Jackson series. I saw the movie, the first one only, before reading the book so when I started Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief I imagined Percy, Annabeth, and Grover as they were in the film and, for example, didn’t realize that book Annabeth was supposed to have blonde hair until a good way through the book.

On a side not now I’ve read the first book I can say it is so much better than the film. I didn’t realize how much had been changed and left out until I started the book.

A character name that you’ve been pronouncing wrong

I read a lot of fantasy books so pretty much any character in any book you can think of with an unusual name, which is a lot of them. The most recent example is Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses. I didn’t realize until I finished the first book and saw the glossary, another side note they should really put the glossary at the front of the book not the back, and saw the correct pronouncification of her name.

Also I’m 99% sure I’m also pronouncing Aelin’s, Aedion’s, and Chaol’s names, from the Throne of Glass series, incorrectly as well.

An overused trope that is your guilty pleasure

I wouldn’t say it’s overused but I love the enemies to friends to lovers trope. Simon and Baz from Carry On, Rhys and Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses, Juliette and Warren from Shatter Me, Paige and Warden from The Bone Season, to name a few. I love the back and forth between two characters when they’re on different sides, the developing friendship and then later the developing romance.

A cliché character type that you like better on screen than reading about

Not really a character type but; character A is hiding a really obvious secret, and no matter how many clues are dropped character B doesn’t pick up on anything amiss. This is a trope that really bugs me in books. I can see all the near reveals, all the obvious hints revealed and I just want to scream at character B ‘why can’t you see this, it’s so obvious’. However on screen I love it.

I am a massive fan of iZombie, and despite her changing moods as she takes on personality traits of the victims, and despite seeing her ‘brain food’ more than once, Clive never seems to guess Liv’s secret.

A word/phrase you learned because of its use in a book

I can’t think of any specific words of phrases, it’s more just general knowledge. I’ve learnt a lot about different cultures from reading; Greek mythology through the Percy Jackson series, the Roman empire through the Red Rising trilogy, Native American traditions through The Love That Split the World. I’ve learnt so much about history from all the time travel book I’ve read; Passenger, Marking Time, Into the Dim, and I’ve learnt about different countries I’ve then been desperate to visit; Prague from Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Have you ever not read or completed a required reading book for school?

The only book I didn’t finish which I read in school was Julius Caesar, and that’s only because we were only required to read the first two acts. As for the rest; I didn’t enjoy them, it took me ages to get through them (we’re talking months here), but in the end I did finish them all.

Have you ever (or wanted to) skipped a chapter from the point of view of a character you weren’t interested in?

I’ve never skipped a chapter but there have been times when I’ve wanted to. Game of Thrones for example. When reading A Feast for Crows there were no chapters from the POV of either of my favourite characters, Daenerys or Tyrion, and honestly I did not enjoy Asha Greyjoy’s chapters at all. It was my least favourite book and I was more tempted to skip parts than I should have been in a series I do love.

Have you ever cancelled social plans to read a book?

That would require me to make social plans in the first place. I’ve never cancelled plans to read but I have avoided making them in the first place because I wanted to catch up on reading or blogging instead.
