The ‘I Messed Up’ Book Tag

I am going to be posting tags a little more regularly from now on. Don’t worry I’m not going to bombard everyone’s feed with a tag a day but I do need to start getting through my queue a little quicker than I have been.

And to start off it’s the ‘I Messed Up’ book tag.

I was tagged by Jess at The Mud and Stars Book Blog. Obviously everyone should check out Jess’s original post and her blog, and if you’re not following her already then what are you waiting for? Thank you so much for the tag Jess, I’m sorry it took me a while to get around to it but better late than never I guess.

The 'I Messed Up' Book Tag

A character appearance that you misread or imagined differently

The most recent example would be pretty much every character in the Percy Jackson series. I saw the movie, the first one only, before reading the book so when I started Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief I imagined Percy, Annabeth, and Grover as they were in the film and, for example, didn’t realize that book Annabeth was supposed to have blonde hair until a good way through the book.

Percy Jackson Series

On a side not now I’ve read the first book I can say it is so much better than the film. I didn’t realize how much had been changed and left out until I started the book.

A character name that you’ve been pronouncing wrong

I read a lot of fantasy books so pretty much any character in any book you can think of with an unusual name, which is a lot of them. The most recent example is Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses. I didn’t realize until I finished the first book and saw the glossary, another side note they should really put the glossary at the front of the book not the back, and saw the correct pronouncification of her name.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Series

Also I’m 99% sure I’m also pronouncing Aelin’s, Aedion’s, and Chaol’s names, from the Throne of Glass series, incorrectly as well.

An overused trope that is your guilty pleasure

I wouldn’t say it’s overused but I love the enemies to friends to lovers trope. Simon and Baz from Carry On, Rhys and Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses, Juliette and Warren from Shatter Me, Paige and Warden from The Bone Season, to name a few. I love the back and forth between two characters when they’re on different sides, the developing friendship and then later the developing romance.

A cliché character type that you like better on screen than reading about

Not really a character type but; character A is hiding a really obvious secret, and no matter how many clues are dropped character B doesn’t pick up on anything amiss. This is a trope that really bugs me in books. I can see all the near reveals, all the obvious hints revealed and I just want to scream at character B ‘why can’t you see this, it’s so obvious’. However on screen I love it.

I am a massive fan of iZombie, and despite her changing moods as she takes on personality traits of the victims, and despite seeing her ‘brain food’ more than once, Clive never seems to guess Liv’s secret.

iZombie

A word/phrase you learned because of its use in a book

I can’t think of any specific words of phrases, it’s more just general knowledge. I’ve learnt a lot about different cultures from reading; Greek mythology through the Percy Jackson series, the Roman empire through the Red Rising trilogy, Native American traditions through The Love That Split the World. I’ve learnt so much about history from all the time travel book I’ve read; Passenger, Marking Time, Into the Dim, and I’ve learnt about different countries I’ve then been desperate to visit; Prague from Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Have you ever not read or completed a required reading book for school?

The only book I didn’t finish which I read in school was Julius Caesar, and that’s only because we were only required to read the first two acts. As for the rest; I didn’t enjoy them, it took me ages to get through them (we’re talking months here), but in the end I did finish them all.

Have you ever (or wanted to) skipped a chapter from the point of view of a character you weren’t interested in?

I’ve never skipped a chapter but there have been times when I’ve wanted to. Game of Thrones for example. When reading A Feast for Crows there were no chapters from the POV of either of my favourite characters, Daenerys or Tyrion, and honestly I did not enjoy Asha Greyjoy’s chapters at all. It was my least favourite book and I was more tempted to skip parts than I should have been in a series I do love.

A Feast for Crows

Have you ever cancelled social plans to read a book?

That would require me to make social plans in the first place. I’ve never cancelled plans to read but I have avoided making them in the first place because I wanted to catch up on reading or blogging instead.

  1. I mostly read fantasy books as well and some of the names are seriously ridiculous! I can’t pronounce most of them correctly. I was once watching a review on youtube and the person mentioned a character, I had no idea who it was – I thought we didn’t read the same book at first! XD Well, the trouble with fantasy names.

I love the enemies to friends to lovers trope as well! Sadly I haven’t read that many books that feature it, though I have quiet a few on my TBR. Thank you for tagging me! 🙂

    1. It’s a trait in so many of them though isn’t it. I’ve got to the point where before picking up most fantasy books I just know I’m not going to be able to pronounce any of the names.
Oh my god that must have been hilarious! I’ve been talking about books with my friends sometimes and realised I’ve had the wrong names just from their pronouncification of them.
I don’t think there’s too many enemies to friends to lovers in YA fiction but I have pretty much loved all the ones I’ve read.
And that’s all right, I hope you have as much fun with this tag as I did! 😀

      1. Hahaha, yeah it was pretty hilarious! XD
I agree, you can’t often find it in YA. I plan on reading A Court of Thorns and Roses and Unravel Me sometime soon and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to love both! 🙂

  2. Thanks for doing the tag! 🙂 Loved your answers. I am also guilty of pronouncing ALL of Sarah J Mass’ characters’ names incorrectly haha. Totally agree with you on your guilty pleasure. I am totally obsessed with Simon & Baz and Rhys & Feyre at the moment ❤

    1. That’s all right 😀 thanks so much for tagging me, I had a great time with this one!
It’s a major one in terms of fantasy isn’t it? The names look like they should be easy to say but then you realise you’ve been reading them wrong for the whole book and you’re just like ‘how?!’ Or at least I am 😀
Oh my god I am definitely obsessed with Rhys and Feyre after reading ACOMAF, I need the next book now like I need air, and yeah I’ve pretty much been obsessed with Simon and Baz since I read Carry On last year. 😀

      1. Haha yes, nobody in fantasy ever has an everyday easy-to-pronounce name! Omg I know, I can’t believe it’s a whole year to wait for the next book. I need more Rhys in my life 😦 And I really wish there would be some kind of Carry On sequel! 🙂

      2. But on the other hand can you imagine reading a fantasy book where the characters all had really common names; John, Jane, Michael…it just wouldn’t feel right.
God I know what you mean, after the ending I need the third book like, right now, not in a year. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some kind of sequel to Carry On. I mean, it could happen one day 😀

  3. I had the same experience with the Percy Jackson characters! Especially because the actors are like 20 and in the books everyone is supposed to be around 12. AND I’M SO HAPPY YOU FINALLY READ THE FIRST BOOK AAAYYYY.
Thank you so much for the tag! 😊

    1. Oh my god yes, watching the film I thought maybe they were sixteen or something, but then reading the book I realised they are all supposed to be 12, like, really?! The HP movies cast young actors and it worked out well for them!
Oh man I am LOVING this series so far, I’m already halfway through the the third book! Why did it take me so long to start?
That’s all right, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one! 😀

      1. Yeah, Rick Riordan himself has said that he hates the movies. 😀
Oh wow, you’re flying through them! I’m so happy to hear you’re loving them. 😊

      2. I can kind of see why, I mean he wrote the books so he’s got to be a little annoyed with seeing everything that’s been changed and plain missed out in the films!
Yeah, it’s easy to get through books quickly when you enjoy them, and I am really enjoy the PJ series! 😀

    1. Oh same here, there are just so many really confusingly spelt ones! And actually I remember seeing the first episode of the TV program and realising I’d been pronouncing Arya wrong, and you’d have thought that would have been an easy one to get right!

  4. Haha, I think I’m pronoucing so many characters’ names wrong, but I’ll pretend it’s because I’m French and can’t have the right accent? Sometimes I just pretend I’m busy doing other things in order to stay home and blog or read, hahaha, you’re definitely not alone in this 😛 Great answers!

    1. At least you’ve got that as a kind-of excuse. I’m born and raised in England so I feel I should be able to pronounce the names correctly at least 🙂 either way I’ve gotten used to the fact that I’m butchering fantasy names now, I just call them something vaguely similar and am done with it! 😀
I do that a lot as well, probably more than I should but from the sounds of it it’s a common thing for book bloggers/readers so yeah, definitely not alone! 😀
      Thanks Marie! 🙂

  5. Ughhh I’m pretty sure I’m pronouncing 90% of characters wrong, but it’s more like I’m too busy reading to actually think about it. For example, ‘Lila’ is ‘Lee-la’ in my head despite it probably actually pronounced ‘Lie-la’? English is my second language so my pronunciation is still very much rooted in my first, haha.

Also I really wanna start watching iZombie but I’m kind of scared that it’ll be gorey and full of kind of body humour? Like I’m very bad with those things.

And like you, I’ve also never cancelled social plans specifically to read… but I’ve definitely bailed when I REALLY WANT to stay at home, and sometimes that means I’ll be reading. 😛

My pingback also didn’t work for this post, hmmm, but thanks for the tag, Beth! I’m excited to do this one!

    1. I’ve just gotten used to the fact that I’m getting all the character names wrong, now I don’t even really try to correct myself, I just call them something that vaguely resembles their name.
It’s pronounced ‘Lee-la’, really?! Well, there’s another name I’ve been getting wrong! At least you have the whole second language thing as an excuse. English is my first and only language so I feel like I should be able to pronounce it properly! 🙂
I’m trying to think back to iZombie episodes and other than the series finales I don’t think there’s that much gore, obviously you see brains, but I think that’s about it. I’m normally bad around too much gore as well and it really doesn’t bother me in iZombie episodes so it can’t be too bad!
When comparing the two bailing on plans isn’t as bad as cancelling ones you’ve already made (at least that’s what I tell myself!) I think people are used to me being a little unsocial now so it doesn’t matter anyway!
Hmm, pingbacks seem to be hit and miss at the moment, but that’s all right, I’m looking forwards to seeing your answers for this one! 😀

      1. No, no! I think it’s actually ‘Lie-la’, haha. I pronounce is ‘Lee-la’ though because that’s how it would be pronounced in my mother tongue. On that note, how do you pronounce Rhy? 😛

I’m OK with some gore as long as it’s not… violent, I think. Like I survived watching Criminal Minds, it just makes me feel nauseous for a bit afterwards. I LOVE that show, though. I’ll definitely be checking out iZombie, thanks for the rec!

I actually wish I was more social! I feel like I’ve really retreated back into my shell nowadays and it’s SO comfortable.

      2. Oh, OK, that least that’s one name I’m getting right! In my head I pronouce ‘Rhy’, ‘Rye’ but considering if you add an ‘s’ on the end it becomes ‘Reece’ I’m doubting my version is right, still I’m not gonna change it in my head even if I find out the right way to say ‘Rhy’! 🙂
Ohh, I love Criminal Minds as well, I think if you enjoy that iZombie should be all right, the levels of gore are about the same because of the dead bodies, and obviously the ‘brain food’. The finales may be a little iffy though because they are a bit more gruesome! I really hope you love it if you do check it out, like I said it’s amazing! 😀
I meet up and chat with my friends a fair bit, it’s more work outings and stuff like that where I don’t know the people as well I tend to back out on :/

  6. Haha I loved reading your answers! The last answer is just spot-on: that would require making plans in the first place! I’ve definitely avoided that since I started blogging 😛

  7. I understand completely in regards to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I watched the movie first because my dad had read the books, and I just wanted to sit back and watch a film. So, when I began reading the books, I couldn’t help but picture Annabeth with brown hair. And I cannot get Brandon T. Jackson out of my head as Grover! Oops!

  8. I’m so excited that you read The Lighting Thief! I watched the movie first too and now I’ve read the books I just like to think of them as a separate thing that has nothing to do with the boks haha. I enjoy the movies, but the books are so much better.

    1. Oh yes. I am LOVING the series so far and am already halfway through the third book! My reading slump is definitely over now! 😀
Well I’ve only seen the first movie but I do think it seems to be going down a slightly different path to the books, unless they included Kronos in the second movie? Yeah I still enjoy the movies as well but I don’t think they can compare to the books (but I guess the same can be said of any book to movie adaptation!)

  9. My pingbacks haven’t worked in months. 😂 Good thing I saw this tag in my feed. I like this tag. I’ll definitely take a stab at this one. I have no idea how to pronounce any name from a Sarah J. Maas book, so I’m right there with you. The names were a big reason why I never started any of them. I don’t understand why fantasy authors think they need to use the most complicated names they can think of. Completely agree with you on Game of Thrones. Dany and Tyrion were the only chapters I even cared about reading. I wanted to skim the rest, but I was afraid I’d miss something. I love that trope. The enemies to friends to lovers trope is one of my favs. I read a lot of NA books like that. I don’t see it as much in YA. Thanks for the tag!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Oh that is a good thing, and strange about your pingbacks not working as well, that’s not good!
Yeah it’s one of the downsides of reading fantasy books, nine times out of ten you have no idea how to pronounce the names of people or places or, well, most things actually. I’ve just gotten used to the fact that I’m probably imagining the names wrong, but oh well 😀
In that case, if you haven’t read the fourth book yet, you probably won’t enjoy it as much! There was no Dany, no Tyrion and it just couldn’t hold my interest like the others did.
I know what you mean I don’t see as much of it in YA books, maybe I should start reading some NA if you say there’s more of it there, but I guess it’s why I enjoy it so much when I do find it you know, it hasn’t become a tired trope for me.
And that’s all right, I can’t wait to see your answers for this one! 😀
