A Postcard from Venice

Italy is probably my favourite country in the world (at the moment, there are still countries I’ve never set foot in). I’ve been once to Milan and twice to Rome so when my friend suggested going to Venice this year I jumped at the chance.

I’d heard a bit from people who’d already been there before; how it was really overpriced (for most things I didn’t really find that to be the case), how it was smelly (yes the canals had a slight sea weed-y odour but in May it wasn’t that bad), and that the gondola rides were a rip-off (we didn’t even look up the prices for those). For me, however, my first impression of the city was how unique, quaint, gorgeous it was.

I think Venice is more of a shopping destination that a tourist one, like say Rome for example. While there are still some amazing attractions to visit, and a lot of history that makes up this city, most people will go for a city break to Venice for the shopping.

My friend and I walked all over the city and saw everything it had to offer; it isn’t that large so it was easy, while tiring, to go everywhere on foot. We wandered along the main streets where shops and cafes lined the pavements, we walked along the grand canal with gelatos in hand, we travelled alongside the smaller canals, side streets, and past quaint markets.

They say all roads lead to Rome but in Venice all roads seemed to lead to Piazza San Marco. It seemed to be the centre of the city; home to Saint Mark’s Basilica, a truly beautiful and breathtaking building which offers beautiful views of not only the cathedral inside but the whole square, and Doge’s Palace.

For me Venice was a spontaneous trip, we didn’t have anything planned so we wandered to our hearts content, crossing the Rialto Bridge and passing the Bridge of Sighs, visiting the museums and seeing all the history Venice had to offer. Of course we ended up spending a lot of money on gelato, souvenirs and more gelato but that’s part and parcel of being in Italy I guess.

Advice (a.k.a. learn from my mistakes)

  • Don’t forget the sun cream…This was a really bad mistake on my part because by the end of the second day my back, shoulders and chest were burnt and of course I had no sun cream. Venice can get really hot, especially in the summer, and walking around you won’t realise you’re starting to burn until you get back to the hotel and look in the mirror.
  • Drink plenty of water…The reasons for this are obvious.
  • Be wary of tourist traps…The only places I’ve ever encountered this is in Italy. Most restaurants close to major attractions don’t care about repeat customers because they know tomorrow there will always be more tourists walking through their doors. If you’re not careful you can get caught with hiked up prices, cover and service charges and by the end of your meal you’re left with a bill that’s way more than you would have thought. So be careful because it can put a real damper on your day.
  • Don’t take a gondola…Unless you really want the experience and you have the money it’s just not worth it. You can walk pretty much everywhere and anywhere in Venice, and if you want to travel by the canals then you can take the water bus for a fraction of the price.

A Postcard from Venice (2)

If you ever get a chance to go to Venice one day try and go during the Carnival. Everywhere you go in Venice you will see masquerade masks for sale. They’re such a big part of the culture and honestly so beautiful you’ll want to buy them all. Every year during Carnival the streets are filled with masked party-goers and from what I understand (I wasn’t in Venice during Carnival much to my disappointment) it’s an elaborate and beautiful affair.

  1. Hiya! Top blogging… Counting down the days til our trip to Venice… I have a Q for you…

Now I know it’s all personal preference but we are debating getting a water taxi from the airport vs a vaporetto. What was your choice? Anything to share on your experience? I’ve heard that nothing beats a water taxi, however the price has me coming over in a cold sweat; is it really worth it over the vaporetto?!

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks so much; and I hope you have a brilliant time in Venice, it’s a beautiful city.
Me and my friend got the vaporetto when we were there. I imagine it’s the same experience as a water taxi but you have to deal with the queues and it can be a little crowded as well with everyone and their suitcases.
I’d say if the price worries you do much then go with the vaporetta! 🙂

  2. I went to Venice with my dad and my brother on New Year’s Eve and it was honestly the worst holiday of my life. Very bad time to go! But I’m glad you enjoyed it there. 😊

    1. Oh that’s a shame, was it just the time of the year or was it loads of little things that ended up contributing to a bad holiday. My mum had the same experience when she was in Venice, hasn’t been back since!
I did have a great time, I think I’d like to go back one day in a few years maybe during Carnival! 😀

      1. Haha well since my parents are Italian I’ve visited my family in Italy a lot in the past. Venice is just a small part of it, and the rest of the country is completely different! I have never been to Rome tho, my family lives closer to Milan. 😃

      2. Oh that must be nice, I’m assuming you’ve enjoyed the other parts of Italy you saw more than Venice then? I’ve been to Milan, which is also amazing, and Rome and I would definitely recommend Rome. It’s one of my favourite cities in the world (that I’ve been to so far!)

      3. I’ve not seen that much of the more touristy places, like in Milan for example I just drove through with my dad. That’s kinda what happens when you’re visiting family, you spend time with them and ignore all the places you could go to.

  3. These photos are lovely! It all looks amazing. I really want to go to Venice now! 🙂 thanks for the advice; it can be so hard to travelling when you’ve never to the country before.

    1. Thanks so much Fatima! And yes Venice was a beautiful city, I don’t think my photos full do it justice, and I’m glad you liked my advice as well. I know what you mean it’s so hard planning trips sometimes when you have no clue where to start looking for hotels, flights, attractions, or just general advice!

      1. Yes, exactly! In a month or so, I’ll be going to visit some family in Holland, so I’m lucky in that I don’t have to search for a hotel, but if I had no family there, well it would be a whole lot harder. 🙂

      2. Ohh, that’ll be nice. I’ve been the Amsterdam in Holland and it is probably my favourite city in the world! I hope you have a great time while you’re there, and yeah at least staying with family means you don’t need to look for a hotel 😀

  4. I actually think Venice is one of my favourite cities in the world! Last year I was in Italy for a month and I spent a weekend in Venice. It was so beautiful and so much better than everyone seemed to say it was (like sheeshkababs, what’s with all the negativity guys?). I admit I did take a gondola ride because OMG GONDOLAS! Totally worth it, absolutely 100% worth it. I enjoyed it so much. We managed to talk the guy into giving us a discount (myself and a friend) and then got a 45 minutes ride . . . I think that’s what it was. Twas absolutely awesome. And we completely failed to plan anything and didn’t really know what was there but we saw some of the key sites on our little gondola trip. We also got completely lost trying to find our hotel – those little streets are terrifying I tell you. I wish we’d had more time to do more things because it’s absolutely fabulous, *sighs*. And I love that you spontaneously decide to go to Venice, the only place I could spontaneously decide to go to would be New Zealand or Bali ahaha I totally went full out tourist and bought a mask too (look at you frowning).

    1. It’s a gorgeous city isn’t it, honestly that was my first thought when I arrived in the actual city on the water bus 😀
I’d love to be able to do something like that, spend a month in Italy travelling to all the different cities, maybe one day. I know what you mean everyone seemed kind of negative about the city, but I guess it was a nice surprise when you got there and realised it wasn’t all that bad. I mean yeah there were the slightly off parts but honestly what city doesn’t have them?!
Wow that’s great about the gondola ride, forty five minutes and with a discount must have made it worth it in the end. We didn’t really plan much either, but the people at our hotel gave us recommendations so we had a starting point!
Most of our holidays are spontaneous. My friend will say do you fancy going to *insert city/country name here*, I’ll say yes and we’ll arrange to book it! The only planning that goes into it is what dates we want to go!
Totally not frowning, I would have loved to buy a mask but I was just like “where would I put it?!”

      1. Yes! And tbh, living on the coast the smell of seaweed reminds me of home haha

I cannot even express how jealous I am. Oh to live in Europe. *starts putting up tent and pets kangaroo* *sad music plays in background*

I hung my mask just off the side of my mirror so it looks all fancy like haha

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Same here actually. I guess we’ve gotten used to the sea weed aroma and no longer notice it, handy in Venice 😀
I do love living in Europe just for the convenience of travelling for city breaks. Guess that’s harder where you are!
I think I’m running out of room in my room for small travel souvenirs! My bookshelves are full of them!

  5. Ahh this is such a great post, you’re making me want to travel so badly. I can’t wait to actually start planning my trip and everything, really, I feel like I’m stuck here and going crazy. I miss travelling. A LOT, ahah. I love these pictures, and I have to admit I’ve always had an image of Venice being a bit, well, smelly, I’m glad it wasn’t really the case here 🙂

    1. Honestly writing both of these made me want to go back as well, and looking through all the pictures I took too!
I really need to plan my next trip, gotta work out a time me and my friend can coordinate and actually book something, at the moment I’m in holiday limbo and I know what you mean it sucks because you need something to look forwards to!
Thanks ❤️ I’m really glad you liked the pictures I took, and yeah it was a bit smelly but I kind of thought it was just like living next to the seaside, slightly sea weed-y, nothing too unbearable!

      1. It’s always so much better when you have something physically booked to look forwards to rather than just something you’re thinking of/planning because it’s just more real, it’s actually happening!
Potentially Jamaica with my sister if a couple of things fall into place (I’m not sure how likely this is but I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed!) if not then Algarve with my friend. What about you? Where are you planning on going next?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Exactly! As much as I love looking at hotel rooms and flights and must-sees, there’s nothing like having tickets booked to actually go 😀
Ohh wow that’s awesome! During the summer? That’s so great! 🙂 We haven’t decided yet, thinking about England (a few cities, we can’t stay in place), Ireland (same, ahah), Canada (East probably) … It’s SO hard to choose ahah, I want to do everything.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yes, because then you can start looking forwards to everything you have booked for the holiday and counting down the days until it’s here! I always get so excited once everything’s booked because I know exactly what I have to look forwards to 😀
Probably in September, still really warm but not boiling hot! Well I’d definitely recommend England (for obvious reasons 😀) I’ve never been to Ireland or Canada so you’ll have to let me know what you think of those places if you go! God I know what you mean, there are sooo many places I want to go to!

  6. Ahh, this looks so amazing 😍😍! I so wish I could do something like this. I love how many cities are accessible in Europe. When my sister was in Germany she took weekend trips to Italy, France and Turkey. In my state in Australia if I wanted to take a weekend trip it’d just be a few towns over in the same state because everything is so far apart 😂

I’m glad you had such a lovely time (despite the sunburn, ouch!) and those photos are all so gorgeous! The architecture is sooo beautiful.

    1. It’s a gorgeous city, and yeah it’s one of the best things about living in Europe. I won’t say I take loads of weekend trips but the ones I’ve taken have all been amazing. I guess it’s not much of a weekend get-away if your only going a few towns over is it? 🙂
Yeah it was a brilliant weekend, minus the sunburn, but like I said to my friend it wouldn’t be a proper holiday without me getting burnt part way through it (it’s literally happened everywhere I’ve been except Iceland, for obvious reasons!) 😀
I’m glad you liked my photos too! ❤️

      1. Yeah, that can’t make it easy to plan holidays can it? I have family living in Australia (somewhere) I think they have to get a plane just to travel to the next town over. I can’t imagine that, it takes me about fifteen minutes by car in the UK.
Thanks 😀 I’m glad you liked my photos! 🙂

  7. Your pictures are gorgeous! I had heard the gondola rides were not worth the money. Funny story- I actually heard this from a man who was from Venice and was giving my friend and I a gondola ride through The Venetian casino in Las Vegas. Haha! That’s as close as I’ve come to Italy. I’ve always wanted to go though. My fiancé didn’t want to go when he found out the Ferrari plant was far from there.

    1. Thanks so much Jill 🙂
Yeah I’d heard they were expensive before I went from pretty much everyone I spoke to about Venice! It’s something well known apparently, still there were loads of people riding in them, guess it must be worth the money for the experience for some people.
As nice as The Venetian hotel is (I was in Vegas a couple of years ago with my sister, it’s an impressive city isn’t it?) it can’t really compare with Italy itself, but at least you got to ride in a gondola there, that’s closer than I got! 😀

      1. I had heard about how the gondoliers are always drunk, which makes it extremely unromantic, so the guy in Vegas suggested not wasting the money. Yeah, I would imagine it’s probably about the experience. Sadly, I think The Venetian is as close as I’ll come to Venice. Haha! Vegas is a cool city. I’ve been there about 5-6 times. Though the more you go it does lose its appeal.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Really?! You’d think given that they’re sailing a boat they’d have to be sober or something. I wouldn’t be able to steer one of those gondolas sober let alone drunk!
The experience is probably an amazing one but I wasn’t willing to pay that much money for it 🙂
I’ve only been to Vegas once but I would like to go again (I think two or three times is my maximum for visiting some places, others I love I could go again and again and never get tired of them!)

      3. He said everyone in Italy drinks wine around the clock, so I guess it’s normal to the people who live there. He told me they’re supposed to sing, but they’re usually too drunk so the words come out all slurred and it’s not very romantic. What do they charge for a gondola ride?

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I suppose that makes more sense. I wouldn’t have guessed looking at them that they were drunk but we didn’t really go close enough to hear them. And yeah a slurring gondola driver(?) would not be very romantic would it?
My friend looked it up and it think it was around €100 for a thirty minute ride, I could be wrong about that but it’s what she found online so…

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Wow! That’s expensive. I swam with sea lions and dolphins for that much money. I guess it’s one of those things that people do just to say they’ve done it. After what I’ve heard, I’d probably pass on it, too.

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Yeah, we didn’t think it would be worth the money! Wow swimming with sea lions must have been an amazing experience, I’d definitely pay for that!
Yeah for €100 I’d happily miss on that experience, I still got to go on the canals via the water bus, that’s enough for me 😀

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks again 🙂 And we had a brilliant time as well, except for the sunburn obviously. But like I said to my friend it isn’t a proper holiday unless I get sunburnt, I burn easily but I don’t blister so I guess I’m lucky in that way 🙂

  8. Ughhh so jealous of you! If I ever want to take a ~weekend trip~ to Italy or anywhere in Europe 2 days of that will be devoted to flying, haha. The pictures look AMAZING. I’ve never been to either country before and I would really, really love to. 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah that must make it hard to take weekend trips places if you need to take into account the flying time. It’s one of the things I love about living where I am, plus long haul flights are really tiring at times!
Venice is such a beautiful city, I think if you ever get a chance to go you really really should. The photos can’t really compare with seeing and experiencing it all for yourself. 😀
