Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim.

I tend to not pick up books on a whim much. I get recommendations from my friends and from Goodreads, read new books by authors I already love, and when I do find a new books I always wait and anticipate and hype up its release. I did think this week’s topic was going to be a real challenge but when I started looking through the books I’d read recently I was surprised when there were more than a few which I started reading (or brought) on a whim.

Top Ten Tuesday #21

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

I saw one review for this, a brilliant and glowing review, and without even reading the blurb or any other reviews I picked up a copy and started reading it the very next day. Luckily it more than lived up to my expectations.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

I saw this book around a lot when I first started blogging but, despite loving Bracken’s Darkest Minds series, I never really jumped on the hype ‘band wagon’ for Passenger. Still when I started reading Passenger shortly after its release I couldn’t put this book down, and now I am definitely anticipating the release of the second book.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

This is one I still haven’t read yet but one day while in Waterstones I saw Lady Midnight on the display for new releases and, after everyone having raved about it on WordPress, I couldn’t resist picking up a copy for myself.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Like with Bone Gap I saw one review for this book, a five-star and full of praise review, and had to pick up The Bone Season. It sounded like something I’d love and I was right, The Bone Season has fast become one of my favourite series.

The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Until I finished My Life Next Door I didn’t even realise there was a companion novel already released, but as soon as I discovered The Boy Most Likely To I had to pick it up. Tim was one of my favourite character’s in My Life Next Door and I was thrilled to see his story continued.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Like with The Boy Most Likely To this book wasn’t really on my radar until after I read I’ll Give You the Sun. Jandy Nelson has fast become my favourite contemporary authors so after reading and loving I’ll Give You the Sun I had to buy a copy of The Sky is Everywhere straight away.

The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry

Even now I’m still not sure why I actually picked this book up. I saw it around WordPress in the run up to its release but the blurb didn’t really catch my eye so I wasn’t one of the people eagerly anticipating reading it. Still I picked it up, read it, and loved it.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I love V.E. Schwab’s books so of course I had to pick up Vicious, and it was a real impulse purchase one day after already overspending on books. I haven’t read many reviews for Vicious but if it’s anything like Schwab’s other books which I’ve read I’m sure to love it.

Starflight by Melissa Landers

The main reason I picked up this book was because of the really gorgeous cover . I love sci-fi books though I haven’t read many and I wasn’t sure what to expect from Starflight but I did really enjoy it.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

I discovered this book after seeing a review for it, it was a brilliant review but unlike Bone Gap and The Bone Season I actually looked more into what The Wrath and the Dawn was about before picking it up. After reading and loving A Thousand Nights I was interested in more stories like it and of course had to start The Wrath and the Dawn.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the books you picked up on a whim are.

  1. Every single one of these books (except Lady Midnight, because I don’t know if I’m going to continue with the TMI series) are on my TBR πŸ˜‚ I especially want to read Bone Gap, Vicious and Passenger. I’ve had The Bone Season on my shelf for so long too! I need to hurry up and read it, haha.

    1. Well in that case I really hope you enjoy them all. I just finished reading Bone Gap and thought it was even better the second time around, it’s such a beautiful book, both the story and the writing. I have Vicious on my shelf waiting for me to pick it up and start reading, and I loved Passenger and The Bone Season as well so I really hope you do when you start them! πŸ˜€

    1. Ohh I really hope you love Bone Gap, I just finished re-reading it and I thought it was even better the second time around. You’ll have to let me know when you finish it, I’m so excited to hear what you think! TBMLT is such an amazing book, I loved it even more than MLND so I’m sure you’ll love it too when you do get around to picking it up πŸ˜€

      1. Nope not yet. I really want to get around to it this month because it’s been on my to-read list for a while now and I have a copy of the book so there’s nothing stopping me πŸ™‚
I don’t play Sims but I imagine if I did I’d be the same πŸ˜€ it’s so easy to procrastinate at times isn’t it?

    1. There’s seven books in the series so you’ve got a lot of time to catch up on the two books (soon to be three) that have been released so far πŸ™‚
I hadn’t seen many reviews before picking this series up but I really enjoyed it, I’m one of the positive reviewers rather than one of the “meh” ones! I hope you enjoy it when you do decide to pick up the books! πŸ˜€

      1. Last I heard yep seven books. Not sure if that will change somewhere down the line though but I’m thinking with seven books there’s more than enough time to emotionally hurt all the fans of the series πŸ™‚

  2. There are some great books on here! I can tell you right now that “Vicious” is amazing and I really hope you enjoy it! I’m sure you will if you liked Schwab’s other books. The cover for “Starflight” is insanely goreous, I have yet to read it though but I own it. πŸ™‚

And I’m looking forwards to Vicious even more now πŸ™‚ I’ve heard great things and I liked Schwab’s other books so I’m sure I’ll love this one as well! Starflight is a good book, it’s not my favourite sci-fi book I’ve read but it has a good story. I hope you enjoy that one πŸ˜€

      1. Thank you I hope I like it as well the sample I read reminded me a lot of Firefly! I really, really, really hope you love Vicious! It’s a fabulous book but the only problem is we’re all waiting for the sequel now! πŸ™‚

      2. Yeah thinking back I can definitely see the Firefly angle to this story, but it wasn’t something I was thinking as I was reading it you know. Ohh I’m no good with waiting for sequels but I am really excited to start Vicious, I want to get around to it before this month is over! πŸ™‚
