I seem to be posting my recaps later than ideal. Hopefully my May recap will be up on time for a change, at the end of May rather than a couple of days into June. I wouldn’t even say I’ve been too busy with work or real life, I just seem to have been really lazy this month.
As far as April goes I think my contemporary YA month was definitely a success. I made it through a massive chunk of my to-read list and have added a lot more books onto it for the near future. Don’t get me wrong I still love fantasy and it is still my number one genre but I think contemporary has become a close second.
Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
This book was so sweet, like sugar coma sweet. I’ve seen Simon Vs around a lot recently and through it sounded perfect to kick-start my contemporary YA month. Luckily it more than lived up to the hype and all the amazing reviews I saw for it. I loved the relationship between Simon and Blue even though they didn’t meet face to face until late in the book I was rooting for them from the start.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry
Magical realism is another genre I definitely want to start reading more of. A Fierce and Subtle Poison was a good book, it had an incredibly unique concept and story which I was hooked on from the start. I loved the setting, the stories and legends Lucas sought out from the señoras. The only downside was Lucas’s character. He was well written and developed but the relationships he had with Isabel and his friends just fell flat.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
Jandy Nelson
Jandy Nelson is such an amazing author, after reading I’ll Give You the Sun and The Sky is Everywhere anything she writes is now on my auto-buy and auto-read list. I really enjoyed I’ll Give You the Sun; the relationship Noah and Jude had, and the secrets they kept from one another, were heartbreaking to read at times. However I think I liked The Sky is Everywhere just that little bit more. I really felt for Lennie and her situation, and I loved the journey she took throughout the course of the book.
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is another book that I’d heard a lot about before picking it up; a book with great reviews and a fair bit of hype surrounding it. There’s not much I can really say about the plot because the whole story is about Aristotle and Dante growing up, their friendship with one another, and the journey they take throughout. There is a second book being released, and although there is no cover or blurb it is definitely on my to-buy list.
Anna and the French Kiss Series
After reading books like Aristotle and Dante and Jandy Nelson I needed something light and fluffy to move onto next. The Anna and the French Kiss series definitely fits that bill and although they weren’t my favourites of all the books I picked up this month I really enjoyed each one. The settings were probably one of my favourite part; I’ve been to all the places Anna and Étienne, Lola and Cricket, and Isla and Josh went to and it made me want to go again to see all the sites they did.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
This was one of my most-anticipated releases of May and after finally getting my hands on it I was so thrilled to see it more than lived up to all my expectations. The Star-Touched Queen is now the front-runner for my top read of 2016 and it’s going to be really hard to beat this one. Maya was an amazing character, I loved reading her story and her relationship with Amar, but the setting for this book is what really made it stand out for me. Akaran was so beautifully written it made me want to believe in magic again.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
So if you’ve heard of this book then, even if you haven’t read it yet, you will have heard about the twist at the end. Don’t worry there are no spoilers in this recap but honestly it was the twist that bumped this book up from a four star read to a five star one. While reading I started to think I knew what it was, clues were dropped and there were subtle hints throughout, but I was wrong and when the real twist was revealed I was left stunned.
Firebird Series
So if you’ve heard of this book then, even if you haven’t read it yet, you will have heard about the twist at the end. Don’t worry there are no spoilers in this recap but honestly it was the twist that bumped this book up from a four star read to a five star one. A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray
Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
Morgan Matson has been on my to-read list for a while now and I finally got around to picking up one of her books. Since You’ve Been Gone was honestly really good. I loved the idea of the list Sloane had left for Emily and all the tasks which she had to cross off. I think my favourite part of this book though was Emily’s development throughout; she started off shy and withdrawn but by the end she became much more confident and outspoken.
I took part in three Top Ten Tuesday topics over the course of April.
Top Ten Books Every … Should Read
Top Ten Books That Made Me Smile and Cry
I featured four books as part of the Waiting on Wednesday tag.
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore
A Million Worlds With You by Claudia Gray
Next month there are more than a few of my most-anticipated releases that I can finally get around to; The Raven King, The Rose and The Dagger, A Court of Mist and Fury, not to mention a few new discoveries. I am also going to (finally) try and get around to reading the Percy Jackson series. I’ve seen a lot of it around recently and heard a lot of great things about the books so I am so excited to pick up the first one and see what all the fuss is about.
Oooh there are some nice books here! 🙂 Okay, I’ve been hearing many mixed reviews about A Fierce and Subtle Poison lately and I just LOVE the cover. I don’t think I’m going to read it because many people said that the characters and the plot were underdeveloped and it went kind of slow. But do you think it’s worth the read?

Thanks!
I did enjoy A Fierce and Subtle Poison, yeah there were parts I wasn’t keen on (same as with any book I guess!) but overall it was enjoyable, and the cover is definitely gorgeous! Honestly I’m not sure how to recommend this book. I agree that the plot was a little slow but I don’t think it was underdeveloped, and the only character I didn’t really click with was Lucas (a shame because the story was told from his POV)
Maybe if your ever in the mood for a book like this you should pick it up. It isn’t long so it’ll be a quick read 😀

It’s okay if you post a recap a little bit later! Getting it posted on time is a stressful operation for me hahaha.
Glad you had a brilliant contemporary month! Contemporary is definitely becoming one of my favourite genres after fantasy!
A great blogging month as well with all of those reviews! I don’t know how you do it, especially with how detailed your reviews are.

As long as I’m not posting my May recap at the end of June I think I’m good! Honestly there’s always a lot more to cover at the end of the month than I first think and it takes a while to get everything in order in my mind, and on my blog!
It’s become my second favourite genre as well, and I have plenty more books on my to-read list for when I feel like going back into contemporary or just need a break from fantasy 😀
Thanks! I manage to read quite quickly in general so I can write reviews pretty much that evening. I don’t get a lot of sleep during the week so that probably helps as well! 😀

If this is you being lazy this month, I can’t wait to see what it’s like when you are not hahaha!
I’m impressed with the amount of books you reviewed this month *applauds* and I hope May will be as productive and great as April has been ❤

It would probably just be a few more reviews! I read fast but posting the reviews alongside TTT and WoW means I usually end up with a backlog sometimes of books I’ve read but haven’t posted reviews for!
Thanks! Yeah I’m hoping May will be just as productive, maybe even a little more than April, here’s hoping though! ❤️

Ahh I can’t believe I missed your review for A Fierce and Subtle Poison! Definitely going to read that ASAP. Just quickly though I’m so happy you enjoyed it 😃
Fantastic reading and reviewing month, Beth! You’re so good at getting incredible reviews up of everything you read. That is something I’m definitely trying to get better at!!
So many of these books are on my TBR too and seeing you loved them has definitely made me even more excited to get them!

I also totally forgot to add that I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Raven King and the Percy Jackson series if you can get to it! I hope you enjoy them!!

I’m currently reading The Raven King now, I’m a little scared because I feel like the ending is going to destroy my but so far I am LOVING it. Percy Jackson is on my to-read list for the latter half of the month but I will be posting reviews as soon as I finish each book!

Thanks so much 🙂 I managed to read a fair bit this month, and a lot of the books were amazing which is always helpful when writing reviews! I know what you mean though I definitely think my writing has improved since I started my blog, we definitely get a lot of practise don’t we!
Well I hope you love them all when you get around to reading them! 😀

Now that it’s Spring, Since You’ve Been Gone has been taunting me from my bookshelves. That book is so spring/summer that imma HAVE to read it soon. I’ve heard good things & it sounds cute.
Don’t worry about when you post you’re wrap-ups! I figure, as long as your April isn’t being posted at the end of June, you’re good. ♡♡

I have a list of contemporary books to read for summer, definitely more Morgan Matson on there but yeah Since You’ve Been Gone is a perfect summer read! You should definitely read it soon and I hope you really enjoy it! 😀
I think if it ever gets to that case then I’ll need to start worrying! ❤️

What a wonderful reading month! I am so glad you enjoyed Simon vs the Homo Sapiens and Since You’ve Been Gone 😀 They have been some of my recent favourite reads ❤ As for posting wrap ups on time, that is definitely a big struggle for me haha

Oh yeah both were amazing books, I kind of want to re-read Simon Vs and I only just finished it a month ago now! I’m glad you enjoyed both as well 🙂
Yeah it actually seems that way for a few people! Glad I’m not the only one 😀

I’m thinking of definitely doing it again in another few months (maybe closer to the end of the year) pretty much every month is fantasy month for me so it was nice to focus on contemporary for a while! And yeah there are so many more amazing books out there to discover! 😀
I do manage to read quite quickly so that definitely helps 🙂 I think I’ve gotten better at planning things since I started this blog as well!

Wowser you read some pretty awesome books this month! I’m still so obsessed with Simon even though I read it months and months ago now! I still haven’t even written my recap so don’t feel too bad. Sometimes life just gets in the way and these things have to wait haha Great job this month – I’m hoping to get to Aristotle and Dante and Anna and the French Kiss soon too 🙂

Oh yes some of them are definitely going to be favourites of mine, I read Simon Vs like a month ago and I already want to go back and re-read it! 😀
Hopefully next month I’ll be able to have it up relatively on time 🙂 try and not let life get in the way for May.
I really enjoyed both of those books (Ari and Dante a little more than Anna and the French Kiss but both were amazing!) so I really hope you love them as well. I can’t wait to see your review for when you do finish both! 😀

I’m forever amazed at people who post their recaps right on time – I’m always running late too! But I don’t think that’s a bad thing, it’s just a… procrastination thing? 😛
You’ve reviewed A LOT and posted quite a bit this month, congratulations on being so productive! Also I finally got a copy of Aristotle and Dante – I’ve been in a fantasy mood lately though so I’m putting that off until I get back to reading contemporaries, but I’m glad you gave it a good rating. 🙂

I started off posting recaps at the end of the month, but these past two months I’ve just seemed to get a tiny bit later and later. Pretty soon I’ll be posting recaps at the end of the next month!
Thanks 😀 I think it’s mainly because I read a lot each month, I always manage to get through books quite quickly and then post the reviews the next day! I’m back to a fantasy mood myself but I LOVED Aristotle and Dante and I really hope you do as well!
