Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books Every … Should Read.
Mythology Fan.
It took me a while to come up with my picks for this week. My first thought was fantasy, but I feel like I’ve kind of done that already a few weeks ago, my second thought was fairytale retellings, which I love but once again I’ve already done as a Top Ten Tuesday theme. Then I finally hit on mythology books. I love reading any I can get my hands on, they’re like another version of fairytales which I adore. I will read any I can find; books inspired by Greek and Egyptian mythology, books about gods and angels.
Greek Mythology
Antigoddess by Kendare Blake
Kendare Blake takes the Greek Gods and makes them mortal; Athena is slowly choking on owl feathers and Hermes is wasting away, his body moving too fast for his metabolism to keep up. The first book is brilliant with so many figures from Greek mythology appearing, and not just the gods. The Gods are dying and the Greek heroes have been reincarnated to help them fight the war.
Everneath by Brodi Ashton
This is a book inspired by the Hades and Persephone story, which incidentally is my favourite Greek myth. Nikki spent six months in the Everneath, and now she’s returned home to her old life she finds herself with six months left to make amends before the underworld takes her back again.
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
Another book inspired by the Hades and Persephone myth, but this time steeped in Indian folklore. I am currently reading this book and it is amazing, definitely worth the hype that is currently surrounding it. The writing is beautiful and the world-building is so fantastical it reminds me of the wonder and magic of The Night Circus. Every page there is something new to love and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
I haven’t read this series yet, though I have seen the first movie, and I’ve heard great things about it. Everyone has recommended the Percy Jackson series to me and I didn’t feel like I could post a Top Ten Tuesday on mythology without including these books.
Christian Mythology
The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard
This is a beautifully written book, and an amazing story as well. Outcast and fallen from Gods grace the angels fight for dominion over each other in the ruins of Paris, but there is something much more sinister at play. A Curse has been awoken that was cast when Lucifer Morningstar was still around.
Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor
Don’t worry there’s no spoilers for this book, the last of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. While the angels do play a big part in the first and second books because of their actions and where they set up base I feel the Christian faith plays a much bigger part in Dreams of Gods and Monsters.
Cracked by Eliza Crewe
As well as having possibly the best YA heroine I’ve ever read; Meda is kick-ass, witty, sharp, and all-around amazing. There is a war going on between the Crusaders and the demons, and Meda, part Crusader part demon, is stuck right in the middle of it.
Riders by Veronica Rossi
There are very few books out which feature the four horsemen of the apocalypse, which is a shame because I love reading about them; it’s probably my favourite aspect of Christian mythology. I haven’t started this book yet but Riders sounds amazing, and I loved Veronica Rossi’s first series so I have high hopes for this one.
Eastern Mythology
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
I don’t know much about the One Thousand and One Nights myth, having never read the original version, but The Wrath and the Dawn is the best retelling of it I’ve picked up so far. I am so excited for the release of the second book; not long to go now.
Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
This book was one of my most-anticipated reads for this year. It sounded so amazing; the story, the characters, the world-building. Rebel of the Sands more than lived up to the expectations in ways I didn’t even think of. I loved the setting and I loved the myths and mythical creatures that were woven into the story.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or what some of your favourite mythology themed books are.
Reading is like breathing…
Glad that I found your post. I will definitely add a few of these!
One my top authors is L.A. Banks. She wrote these vampire huntress series that I sincerely love. Great read! Thought you might like it.

Ahh that’s so sweet. 🙂 I’m so glad you liked my post and glad it could inspire you to add some books on your to-read list as well!
I’ve heard of L.A Banks’ books, I probably already have them on my to-read list somewhere but if I don’t I’ll definitely add them. Thanks for the recommendation! 🙂

I love Percy Jackson! And I have The Wrath and the Dawn in my TBR but I haven’t picked them up yet. Will probably do so closer to the release of the second book 🙂

So many people have said that about Percy Jackson, I definitely need to bump that series up my to-read list so I can start it sooner. Oh The Wrath and the Dawn is amazing, I’m sure you’ll love it, and yeah probably wise to wait until closer to the release of the second book.
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT post!

Great list Beth! I always wanted to dabble in some mythologies but I just never had! I’m treating this list as my own mythology TBR list hahaha.
Though Riders have been getting some mixed reviews, I still have to read it because THAT SUMMARY THOUGH!
I’m marathoning Percy Jackson during the summer holidays and I can’t wait to step into that well loved world!

Thanks Astra! I am a massive fan of mythologies and these are some of my favourite books so I really hope you enjoy them as well.
I haven’t actually seen any reviews for Riders yet. I haven’t actually looked honestly, but it’s about the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I’m picking it up just for that 😀
I’m gonna have to marathon it soon as well, so many people have recommended it to me, and yeah it sounds amazing doesn’t it 😀

I have seen some reviews and the reception is mixed, but that’s not stopping me buying it! It sounds to cool to bypass!

Same here actually. I loved Rossi’s first series so I’m definitely going to pick up this one, and maybe if I don’t read any reviews beforehand I’ll enjoy it on my own merits (I find reading negative reviews before reading a book can sometimes effect my own opinion of it, you know)

That always happens with me and it’s so annoying hahaha. Like I’m reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare now and I’m trying to just concentrate on the book and not all of the bad reviews it gets.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Exactly, and for me if it’s a book I haven’t read I’ll start picking out negative things about the story or the characters simply because it was mentioned in the reviews, and I wonder if I would have picked up on them if I hadn’t read the reviews in question. I try and avoid negative reviews now until after I’ve read the book.

I love mythology, yet the only book I’ve read from this list is Percy Jackson!

That’s one of the only books I haven’t read on this list XD
I would definitely recommend them all to you if you looking for some new books to read though 🙂

Ahhh I’ve just bought TWATD for my holiday and I can’t wait to read it! It’s going to be torture waiting until May to pick it up haha. This is a great list, I’ll defo be working my way through some of these suggestions. 🙂 x
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh I really hope you love it! At least waiting until May to read the first you won’t have to wait for the sequel to be released, if you enjoy TWATD you can jump straight into the next one!
Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked my picks for this week, and I hope you like the ones you read as well 😀

I hope so too, it sounds really interesting! I haven’t read any mythology based books really, so I’m excited to get stuck in! 🙂 Haha for once I’ve got good timing then! Thank you! 🙂 X

It’s one of my favourites, and plenty of people love it too so I’m not the only one 😀
Oh definitely, part of me wishes I had waited closer to the release of the second book to start the first, just because I hate waiting for sequels if it’s a book/series I love!

Such fantastic choices Beth! I absolutely love mythology related books so I just found TONS to add to my TBR 🙂 And PERCY JACKSON!!! Please read that series. I adore it so so much ❤

Thanks so much Jenna 😀 I hope you enjoy the books you added to your TBR list when you get around to them. The ones I’ve read are my favourites so I highly recommend them!
Percy Jackson has been moved up my to-read list, I’m hoping to start the series in May, everyone has recommended it to me and I wanna see what all the hype is about 🙂
Thanks ❤️

Awesome list! YES THE PERCY JACKSON SERIES! I would never forgive you for writing this list without Percy Jackson on it, haha.
I have yet to read The Wrath and The Dawn, and Rebel of the Sands but those two books sound awesome. They have been on my wishlist for a while now 🙂

I couldn’t not include Percy Jackson. It is literally the book for Greek mythology even though I haven’t read it yet 🙂
Both are amazing books so I would highly recommend them. Also the second book in TWATD series is out soon so you’ll have that to look forwards to as well!

I’m not a huge mythology-kinds-of-books reader, but I do have some of these on my TBR, especially The wrath and the dawn -we talked about that one if I remember correctly- and Rebels of the sand. I’ve been hearing a lot about The Star-Touched Queen as well, so I might have to read that one! 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
I love mythology but I think even if you’re not a fan most of the books I put for this week’s TTT are still good reads. I’d recommend most of them.
We probably have talked about TWATD, honestly I lose track of all the books we’ve mentioned, I just know my to-read list has grown! But both are great 🙂 and oh I would definitely DEFINITELY recommend The Star-Touched Queen, I’m reading it at the moment and it is becoming one of my favourite books of the year 😀

Ohh really, that much? I heard a bit about The Star-Touched Queen lately, and I don’t know, I feel intrigued, and since I’m trying to read more of fantasy and different kinds of books… I might have to read that one! But you’re such a fast-reader, I will wait for your review before 🙂

The Star-Touched Queen was one of my most anticipated releases for May, and it seemed it was a lot of other people’s as well. It’s a really good book and I’d definitely recommend it to you, especially as your trying to read more fantasy 😀
I’m hoping to have my review up next week sometime, I can tell now it’s definitely going to be a five star book for me 😀

FIVE STARS? I can’t wait. I really want to read more fantasy, even if right now I’m going to read a bunch of contemporaries… I love them too much to give up ahah 😛 I can’t wait for this review 😛

It’s so brilliant. I don’t want it to end. I have a feeling my review may be me repeating over and over how much I loved this book 🙂
I’m gonna try and read more contemporary books as I read fantasy. Contemporary YA has literally become my close-second favourite genre. There’s such a wide variety of amazing books out there. And the same goes for the fantasy genre as well 😀

Ahah, well at least you’ll convince everyone just how good that book is, I’m sure! 🙂
And it makes me SO happy to hear that, my recommendations worked perfectly ahah 🙂

(It is so so good, I pre-ordered it in hardcover today it is THAT good!)
And yes it definitely worked, I’m ninety-nine percent sure that most of the books I’ve read, have planned to read, for this month are all ones I saw reviewed on your blog 😀

Ohh, this makes me feel so happy, at least it means that my reviews are useful to someone, and a tiny bit convincing ahah 😀

Well that makes me happy! I do pick up most of the times books that I know I’m going to enjoy, because I don’t want to read books to bash them right after, that’s just not like me at all, ahah. I want to share the love about books on here 🙂

Oh I’m the same, I do tend to avoid books I know I won’t like but every so often I do read a book I don’t enjoy that much. I try and keep my reviews constructive in that case 😀
So far all the books you’ve recommended to me I’ve enjoyed so much! You’re definitely sharing the love of books on here 🙂

Such great picks! I didn’t know The Star-Touched Queen was based on Hades and Persephone – that makes me want to read it all the more. And TWATD was just golden. ❤️

I only realised it when I read the blurb, but now I’ve started the book I can easily see how parts have been inspired by the Hades and Persephone myth. It’s brilliant so far 😀
I LOVED TWATD and I am so excited for The Rose and The Dagger; not long now!

Oh man it was amazing wasn’t it!? I need to go back and re-read all the books soon! The books I featured this week are favourites of mine so I really hope you enjoy them. That’s a shame about TWATD, but I guess everyone has different tastes when it comes to books. You can’t love everything.

I am pretty much a black sheep in that sense!! They were pretty amazing!! I do want to re read them at some point!! 🙂

There do seem to be more people who love the book than hate it. But there are some really popular books I just haven’t been able to get into, the Red Queen series for example!
I’m gonna try and re-read them soon, I can’t remember the last time I picked up the series.

And ahhh so many awesome books. The Wrath and the Dawn is one of my favourite books, for sure, when it comes to mythology and retellings. Also, you don’t even know how jealous I am right now that you are reading The Star-Touched Queen! 😀 I’ve been wanting to read it ever since I heard of it; it sounds amazing. I can’t wait to see your thoughts once you finish it!
Agh I also must read Rebel of the Sands, for sure. So happy to hear you enjoyed it so much!!
