This or That Tag

This or That seemed like a really fun tag. I hadn’t seen it around before, but honestly there are quite a few I’ve been tagged in recently that I had no clue existed. I have some very particular preferences when it comes to the books I read, a few I didn’t even realise I had until completing this tag.

This or That

I was tagged by Cat at The Book Finch who is an amazingly awesome person and you should all definitely check out her blog.

Would you rather only read trilogies or only read standalones?

Trilogies

I complain when a books ends on a cliff-hanger, and it can be horrific waiting for the next book in the series after such an ending. However I always feel like the plots, the characters, and everything really has so much more room to develop in trilogies, and sometimes the wait, the anticipation, for the next or last book is the best part.

Would you rather only read male or female authors?

I’ve never really thought about this before, I tend to choose books based on the blurb or the cover not so much the authors name, but I’m going to have to say female. I have read some amazing books by male authors, the Red Rising trilogy comes to mind, but I have so many more female authors on my bookshelves than May.

Would you rather shop at Barnes and Noble Waterstones or Amazon?

Definitely Amazon.

Yes there is sometimes a long wait for books to be dispatched and delivered from Amazon, which can be annoying if it’s a new release I cannot wait to get my hands on. However the books are a lot cheaper on Amazon, and there’s much more of a selection as well. Half the time when I go into Waterstones the books I want aren’t available.

Would you rather books were made into TV shows or movies?

If I have to choose, TV shows.

I guess I think that there more time to properly represent the books in TV shows. Unless they make movies hours and hours long there are always parts missing; characters, small plot points, etc. TV shows have the opportunity to actually develop everything in the book.

Would you rather read only five pages per day or five books per week?

Five books a week, obviously.

I read five books a week now anyways. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I were only reading five pages a week!

Would you rather be a professional author or reviewer?

Reviewer.

I love writing so I don’t think it’s matter to me if it was books or reviews. However I think it’d be really hard to see negative reviews of a book I’d written, plus I love talking to fellow bloggers about the books I’ve read.

Would you rather be a librarian or a bookseller?

Bookseller.

I imagine you’d get to see all the latest books as they came in, maybe even before the release date, and I’d love getting first look at them. Plus I’d probably get some kind of staff discount which would be amazing as I spend so much money on books as it is.

Would you rather read only your favourite genre, or every other genre but your favourite?

My favourite genre.

Don’t get me wrong I’ve read some brilliant books from other genres but I couldn’t go without some of my favourite fantasy authors for long.

Would you rather only read eBooks or physical books?

eBooks.

I do love physical books, I have five bookshelves full of them, but I prefer eBooks simply because I can chuck my Kindle in the bottom of my bag and I won’t have to worry about it getting damaged like I would a physical book. Plus there are so many books on my Kindle, and I doubt I’d be able to carry more than ten in my bag without doing serious damage to my shoulder.

  1. Thanks for the tag Beth! I agree with you on so many of these. Especially the TV show adaptation vs movie adaptation thing – I never feel like book characters are given their time to shine in movies. I’m really going to have to check out the Red Rising trilogy, I’ve heard so many good things about it! 🙂

    1. That’s all right. I hope you have fun with it. I love doing tags so I enjoy competing all of them I post on my blog!
Yeah, case in point the Shadowhunter series on TV now, in my opinion the TV show is better than the movie just because there’s more time to develop everything, and I cannot imagine Game of Thrones as a movie, I don’t think I’d work at all!
Ohh yes, Red Rising is amazing, I still need to read the last book in the trilogy but I’ve heard amazing things about it!

      1. So true – there are way too many characters in Game of Thrones for it to ever work as a movie (even an epic 3 hour one…). And I couldn’t agree more about Shadowhunters (plus I was really disappointed with the movie anyway!) – it works so much better as a TV show, because there’s so much stuff going on in those books. And I’m liking the original storylines they’re adding in too – I think there’s a lot more room to experiment without pissing off fans too much with TV, whereas if you went and changed everything in a movie, everyone would be furious! Can’t believe it’s the season finale already tomorrow 😦

      2. I feel even attempting a movie of the Game of Thrones books would have really screwed it up, there’s literally no way. The books are massive and like you said there are so many characters as well.
Oh yes the TV show is definitely better in my opinion (I watched the trailer for the movie the other day after watching episode 12 and it’s so weird seeing the different actors playing the characters and everything). There’s just a lot more space for everything to grow in the TV series, more than there was in the movie. Oh I can’t believe it either. I loved episode 12 (MALEC!) and I’m so excited for the finale right now!

      3. I know what you mean, I’d almost forgotten that different people once played the characters because I’ve gotten so used to the Shadowhunters cast. Omg yes, episode 12 was amazing! I’ve been waiting for that Malec kiss all season haha ❤ I squealed a lot. I'm really excited for the finale today! But sad that it's over. At least it has been renewed for another season 😀

      4. Oh yes it was so strange, I think I’d just watched episode 12 and I was looking on YouTube at trailers and saw one for City of Bones and obviously clicked on it. It was just such a surreal experience especially having just seen an episode of Shadowhunters!
I know the feeling, that is my favourite scene of pretty much the whole series so far! I haven’t seen the finale yet, have you? I’m not surprised it’s been renewed for another season but I can’t wait for it to actually be on TV again!

      5. Definitely my favourite scene too! ❤ I haven't seen it either yet, so very glad you said that as I am trying to avoid spoilers! Planning on settling down in a few minutes to watch 🙂 How about you? Hope we won't have to wait too long until the next season. I may rewatch them all from the beginning in the meantime 😛

  2. Loved your answers! I half agree with you about trilogies, because yes, it means that there’s a lot of place for the characters and story and world to develop, and as a reader, I LOVE IT. The waiting can be good, too, BUT it can make me so mad, at times…especially when we have to wait for years, or when the trilogy suddenly decides to become some sort of quatuor or, I don’t know, infinite books hahaha.

    1. Thanks Marie 😀
There are some good standalone books, a lot of contemporary books are standalones and I really enjoy most of them, but yeah trilogies have so much more space for everything to develop. I’m not very patient so waiting for the next book is TORTURE! Oh god I hate it when that happens to a series, don’t get me wrong I love when books are extended, especially if it’s a good story but it just means even longer to wait.

      1. Yes, exactly! That’s why I’m always on the fence about starting a new series, especially one that isn’t finished, yet. I’m excited for The Winner’s Curse, because all the books are out -RIGHT?-, but I’m always anxious about starting a book in a series when I know I’ll have to wait, because what if I love it? Waiting is SO HARD, ahah. I’m glad you get this feeling, ahah 🙂

      2. Oh I’m the same. I have no patient when it comes to waiting for new books. I always love it when I can read the whole series one after the other and have the beginning and ending in my hands at the same time!
Yes The Winner’s Trilogy has finished so I’d definitely recommend that one, no cliffhanger for you to try and deal with! I always start books from new series but then it feels like I complain for weeks that the sequel isn’t already out for me to read. If I could have a superpower I would want it to be the power to create instant sequels!

    1. That’s all right 🙂 I hope you have fun competing it! And thanks I’m glad you liked my answers too 😀
Oh god yeah, I read a lot on my commute to and from work so carrying around my Kindle is so much easier than carrying around paperback or hardcover books. Like you said so much more convenient!

  3. Thanks so much for the tag, hun!

I am looking forward to doing this — and I agree with you on so many of these points. Especially when it comes to standalones and trilogies. I hardly read standalone novels now. I am always looking for new series to delve into 🙂

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have fun competing it! I still read standalones but they’re either aren’t as many of them as series or, in the case of some I’ve read, they’re not nearly as well developed in terms of the characters or the world building which makes it hard to enjoy them as much as I do series. Oh I completely agree, my to-read list is always growing with new series I discovered 😀
