Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren’t My Typical Genre.
Last year I didn’t really read many books that went out of my comfort zone. So to rectify that, and also to see if there’s another genre I would end up loving as much as I do fantasy, one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to branch out and read more books I wouldn’t normally pick up. For this week’s Top Ten I have highlighted five books I read recently that weren’t my typical genre and five books that are on my to-read list which, hopefully, I’ll be able to get around to soon.
Top Books I’ve Read Outside my Genre Comfort Zone
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Whenever I read books set in the past they always seem to be time travel books. I put All the Light We Cannot See on my to-read list after seeing so many amazing reviews and thinking to myself ‘I should really see what all this hype is about’.
When I got around to reading it, it was easy to see why so many people have loved this book; it is beautifully written and, though hard to read in places, it doesn’t shy away from the ramifications that World War II has on both the main characters.
My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
This was another book I’d heard people talking about a lot, always with so many positive things to say about it. I went in expecting to read a cute and fluffy story about the relationship between Sam and Jace, and while that was in this book there was also so much more.
Darker topics are explored and the author does an amazing job of giving them the proper development they need to fully hit the reader. Plus Jase’s family completely stole the show for me.
13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough
I hadn’t really heard much about this book before reading it but I was definitely intrigued by the blurb; it certainly sounded interesting.
While reading 13 Minutes I found myself constantly trying to guess who the ‘attempted murderer’ was. There were so many twists and turns I was always guessing and every time I turned another page there was more information that had me changing my mind.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I was very late jumping on the Fangirl bandwagon, but better late than never. To be honest the main reason I read this book was because I wanted to read Carry On and obviously I had to start Fangirl first.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The blurb didn’t give much away but following Cath through her first year at university, watching her lose her sister, connect with her roommate, and her relationship with Levi grow was great fun to read.
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
Sarah Dessen is one of my favourite authors. The very first book of hers I read was Just Listen and I adored her characters and the stories she told. The Truth About Forever, after Just Listen, is my favourite of her books.
It has all the same trademarks of Sarah Dessen’s stories; the romance and the hardship the characters all come through in the end. I loved Macy and Wes and their growing relationship, the two of them are so sweet together.
Top Books I Plan to Read Outside my Comfort Zone
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This book has got a lot of good reviews, recognition, and it sounds amazing. It’s definitely on my to-read list for this year; it sounds like it has beautiful writing, compelling characters, and a brilliant plot. I can’t wait to start it.
Wild Swans by Jessica Spotswood
I only recently put this book on my to-read list but it sounds pretty good; a girl with a curse, family turmoil, secrets, and lies all over the course of a summer. And even though it hasn’t been released yet it still has some good reviews.
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
There is a lot of recognition for this book and I’ve heard a lot of brilliant things about it. I’ve had it on my to-read list for a while now but I’m hoping to get around to it sooner rather than later.
Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
Morgan Matson is an author I’ve seen a lot of lately. There are some amazing reviews for all her books and, while I’ve added The Unexpected Everything to my to-read list, I’ll end up starting this one first. I love the idea of the to-do list Sloane leaves for Emily, it sounds like it’ll make an amazing story.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Another book that’s been around for a while that I haven’t yet read. There are mixed reviews but it sounds interesting, and it’s certainly a unique premise. I’m interested to see where the author takes the story.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the books are that you’ve read recently that were out of your comfort zone.
You have so many great books on your list! I especially loved I’ll Give You The Sun and The Truth About Forever! Great Top Ten!

Thanks! I’ve heard great things about I’ll Give You the Sun, everyone seems to love it so I’ve moved it up my to-read list a little bit, I can’t wait to get started on it now.
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT!

I’m trying to read more contemporary YA, too, so Huntley Fitzpatrick, Morgan Matson, and Jenny Han are on my TBR. I’ve also been wanting to read Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe for ages. Sarah Dessen is one of my favourite writers and The Truth About Forever is my favourite of all her books! I don’t know why I avoid contemporary YA when I usually enjoy it so much.
Great list!

I think contemporary YA is the next genre I seem to be branching out into, I’m like you I don’t know why I avoid it, I can’t think of a contemporary YA book I haven’t liked, guess I just prefer fantasy 🙂
Huntley Fitzpatrick is definitely one of the best authors of the genre I think, and I’ve heard some great things about Morgan Matson as well, especially her new release The Unexpected Everything, I have that on my TBR list as well.
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT!

Such great choices! My Life Next Door was so good, I loved that book, too! Aristotle and Dante is such a great story, it’s slow-paced, but it’s fantastic. Since You’ve Been gone was a great read, too, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, too, and I’ll Give You the Sun…just READ that book. It’s one of the BEST books out there ❤

My Life Next Door is definitely my favourite contemporary romance book so far, I love Huntley Fitzpatrick. Have you read The Boy Most Likely To yet? That’s amazing as well.
I don’t mind slow-paced stories, and I’ve heard a lot of great things about most of the books on the second half of my list so I’m hoping to get around to some of them soon. Maybe I should put I’ll Give You the Sun at the top then 🙂

I love her books, too! I haven’t read The Boy Most Likely To, yet, but I’m definitely planning to! 🙂
Aristotle and Dante is slow-paced, but there’s such amazing character development and focus, I love it so much ❤
YES, I'll Give You The Sun deserves to be at the top of your list, you won't regret it! 😀 (well, I hope you won't, haha)

Part of me enjoyed The Boy Most Likely To more than My Life Next Door, but I loved Tim in the first book so I enjoyed reading more about him in the second! I really hope you enjoy it, but I’m sure you will if you like My Life Next Door 😀
I don’t mind slow-paced books, the only thing I can’t stand are books where nothing happens and there’s terrible character development, but from the sound of it that’s not going to be Aristotle and Dante!

Well I’ll certainly move it up on my TBR to read it one of these days! 😀
Oh yes, I hate when that happens, when everything’s just slow and there’s nothing happening. Well that’s not the case in Aristotle and Dante, though, 😀

As soon as I finished reading My Life Next Door and saw there was a second one it went to the very top of my to-read list, I read it in a day and loved it, maybe even a little more than the first one 😀
Yeah, there’s a difference between a slow-paced book and a boring one. I don’t mind slow-paced books but there has to be something which grabs my attention, be it the character development or the plot, or I won’t like it!

I feel the same way! There just has to be something that grabs my attention, too, otherwise it’s a struggle to just finish reading that book.

There have been a few books, not many but a few, I just haven’t finished because of that reason. I’m more likely to stop reading a series halfway through rather than in the middle of a book because it’s just not interesting.

You’re right, I’m the same way! 🙂

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before was hilariously good – I bought it because of all the hype when the second book came out and thought I’d give it ago. I read it so fast!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🙂
I’ve been meaning to read Fangirl for so long now, too! I hope I love it because everyone else in the world seems to!

I seem to have only heard about this book recently, but it has some brilliant reviews and like you said there’s a lot of hype surrounding it. I hope I enjoy it as well 🙂 I’m sure I will, it sounds really good.
Fangirl is definitely a favourite of mine, I’d been meaning to read it for a while before I picked it up but in the end I only really got around to it because of Carry On. I’m sure if you loved To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before you’ll love Fangirl as well 🙂

Great choices! I get super excited whenever I see people mention Sarah Dessen — I feel like she’s a little bit of a classic in the YA field, especially since she’s not super hyped. 😛
I’m also planning to read Aristotle and Dante and I’ll Give You The Sun! All those good reviews. ❤

Sarah Dessen was one of the first YA authors I think I read actually, but I’ve pretty much read every book she’s released since. She doesn’t really write my favourite genre but she’s one of my favourite authors 🙂
I haven’t heard that much about Aristotle and Dante, my friend loved that book though, but I’ll Give You The Sun has so many brilliant review, I had to put it on my to-read list just because everyone else seems to have loved it!

I’ve also read pretty much every Dessen book out there! Admittedly, though, I feel like I enjoy her earlier works better than her later ones — she’s very formulaic as an author and I’m wondering if I’ve just outgrown her, since the books I love are the books she wrote way back when I was a teen.

Yeah I kind of agree with you there. I read and loved all her earlier books, my favourite is probably Just Listen but The Truth About Forever is a close second place 🙂 but I haven’t really picked up any of her newest releases. Maybe one day I’ll get around to them, in the meantime though I may have to re-read Just Listen after this weeks TTT post 😀

My favourite is also Just Listen! But I remember that one the most since I’ve reread it a couple of times. I’m also planning to reread it again soon. 🙂

Just Listen was the first one of Sarah Dessen’s books I read so it’s special for me, but I definitely want to re-read it this year as well, especially after highlighting it in this weeks TTT post 😀
