Historical Book Tag

I was tagged by Anna at My Bookish Dream. Thank you so much for the tag, it took me a little while to get around to completing this one but it was so much fun coming up with all my answers.

This tag was created by Daniel at HowToReadBooks.

Here’s how it works:

  • Link to both the original post on this blog and to the person or people who tagged you
  • For each figure and question, answer with just one book. Some questions have alternate answer options, so feel free to answer both
  • Tag five six other bloggers of your choice

Marilyn Monroe:
The most glamorous book you have ever read.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

The very first time I read this book I fell in love with Laini Taylor’s amazing writing and the world she created within its pages. She made Prague seem like a magical place and it made me want to visit the city to experience it for myself.

I have never before, and never since, read another book that even comes close to Daughter of Smoke and Bone in terms of the writing and the world building.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Winston Churchill:
The best leader within a book and why.

Gansey
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Gansey is the one who leads the other on their journey to find Glendower, and they are all willing to follow him no matter what. Ronan, Adam, Noah, and Blue all have different things that drive them on their quest for Glendower but it is Gansey they follow, Gansey they turn to for answers or help, and Gansey who leads them. He is a brilliant character, and while he does sometimes put his foot in his mouth when it comes to Blue and Adam, he is a great leader who everyone seems to admire.

The Raven Cycle

Adolf Hitler:
The most ruthless book dictator.

The Mongers’
Waging War by April White

It seems appropriate that for this one I picked a book actually set in World War II.

Not really one person but the Mongers’, the descendants of War, police the rest of the immortal descendants; Time, Fate, Nature, and Death. However they desire more power and more control; they start taking out any half-bloods they can find, using the Monger ring to control anyone who threatens their power or stands in their way.

In Waging War they make a move against the rest of the immortal descendants, and the half bloods they’ve kidnapped come into play but I have to wait for the last book in the series to find out what happens next.

Waging War

Maya Angelou:
The character who brought about the most change, or had the most personal development.

Paige Mahoney
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Paige is a character who has gone through so much, and grown so much, in just two books; and with another five left in this series I feel like she still has a long way to go.

After being caught by the Scion and shipped off to Sheol I she keeps her head down, trying to survive, but there is still a spark of rebellion in her blood and she is determined to escape. She trains in how to fully understand and use her clairvoyant gifts and becomes a much stronger character through that.

While in the first book she has faith in her syndicate and Jaxon she starts seeing another side to him, and in the second book she is unable to stand blindly by his side knowing what she knows. She refuses to do nothing and let Scion take more clairvoyants the way they took her. She is an incredibly amazing character and I cannot wait to see what happens next for her.

The Bone Season

Queen Elizabeth II:
Your most favourite member of a royal family from within a book.

Shahrzad
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Shahrzad is an amazing ruler. She is stubborn enough to go toe to toe with her husband, refusing to bow to his every whim, but she also stands by and supports him when needed against people who fight to put him down. She is strong enough to survive each dawn when Khalid has killed every other wife he’s had, and more than capable of looking after herself. She is also kind, understanding, compassionate, loyal, and willing to stand up for herself and those she loves against anyone, be it her husband or her childhood sweetheart.

The Wrath and the Dawn

Albert Einstein:
The kookiest, craziest, most bonkers books character ever!

Princess Winter
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Winter went mad after she stopped using her Lunar gift as soon as she was able to fully control it. However in spite of the madness and the visions that plague her she is still a genuinely good and kind person, a rarity in Queen Levana’s court. She is loved by the citizens of Luna and fiercely loyal to the people she loves; Jacin and her cousin Selene, the true Queen of Luna. She is an incredibly strong character; using her gift would be a lot easier, it would stop the visions and the madness, but she doesn’t. She refuses to ever take someone else’s control and free will away from them.

Best of 2015 #4

Winter

Brutus:
The most betraying character of all the characters.

Roque
Golden Son by Pierce Brown

*Will contain spoilers for Golden Son*

The scene at the end of Golden Son shocked me. I honestly did not see it coming, not a million miles away, but looking back it made sense. Throughout the whole of the book Mustang and Sevro were constantly telling Darrow to repair his relationship with Roque before it was too late. You could see the two of them growing further and further apart and in the end it was too late. All the things Darrow kept from Roque, his friend and his brother, drove them apart and in the end Roque just couldn’t stand by his side or trust him anymore.

  1. Thanks for the tag! I’m a bit of a history nerd so I’m really excited to answer these questions. This is kind of random, but I’ve never seen that cover of Daughter of Smoke and Bone before! I’m used to the American cover that’s mostly black with the mask, and both covers give very different impressions of what the book is about (although I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t really say which is more accurate 🙂 )

    1. That’s all right, I’m the same, a massive history fan, so I really loved this tag 😀
The cover I used is actually the edition of the book I own, the U.K. paperback edition. Personally I think both covers fit the story well, but they focus on different aspects if that makes sense. I’d definitely recommend this book, it’s one of my favourites and, while the first in the series starts off kind of slow, I loved Laini Taylor’s writing style.

      1. I experienced Laini Taylor’s writing in this one YA author collection of holiday stories, and it was absolutely beautiful and magical. And the synopsis of the whole series sounds magical. I will admit, though, I’m a little intimidated because I’ve heard the series is really confusing at first!

      2. I read these books so long ago that I’ve forgotten some of the finer points but I don’t remember finding the writing or story confusing when I did first read it. But I do remember my friend saying when she first started the series that the first book was kind of slow. Her writing is amazing, she has another book coming out in around about Novemeber time that I am really excited for!

  2. It’s been so long since I read The Raven Boys but Gansey’s character is one of the parts I remember the most. Thanks for tagging me, I definitely lool forward to doing this!

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have fun with it.
I literally just finished reading The Raven Cycle books that have been released so far (I need The Raven King now to find out how it all ends) but I loved all the characters and when I saw this part of the tag the first character that came to mind was Gansey.

      1. With all the hype surrounding The Raven Cycle, I think I’m going to be picking them back up soon, probably after the release of The Raven King so that I can binge read the entire thing 😛

      2. I wish that’s what I’d done.
I too picked this series up because of the hype. They are really good so I’d highly recommend them, and while the first one started off a little slow I thought they just got better and better. But now I’m desperate for the final book in the series, April seems like so long away.

  3. Great post! I can’t believe I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned… XD Though quiet a few of them are on my TBR (so I should read then sometime).

    1. Thanks! I had a lot of fun with this tag, thanks again for tagging me in your post 😀
All the books I mentioned in this post are favourites of mine so I’d highly recommend any and all of them. But yes, if you have them on your to-read hopefully you’ll be able to start some of them soon!

      1. I’m glad that you had fun! 😀
I really want to start Cinder soon, as I already own that book. Can’t wait to get my hands on The Raven Boys and Daughter of Smoke and Bone – they both sound like books that I’m going to love! 😀

      2. I loved all here, and they’re books that keep getting better as the series goes on. Both Daughter of Smoke and Bone and The Raven Boys start off kind of slow but stick with it because the second and third books definitely improve on that front. Cinder just kind of goes from strength to strength, the whole series is brilliant. I really hope you do enjoy all of them, I haven’t really heard of that many people who haven’t.

      3. I will keep at it! I have read books by Maggie Stiefvater before and I love her writing, so I will definitely continue read them. 😀 And I have heard that Laini Taylor writes beautifully as well.
And I have read the first chapter of Cinder before and really enjoyed it, so I’m sure that I will greatly enjoy the whole series! 😀

(I hope I wrote the names of the authors correct. XD )

      4. See I wasn’t too keen on the Shiver series, which was the only other book by Maggie Stiefvater I’d read, but I loved The Raven Cycle. Laini Taylor is an amazing author, she has another book coming out later this year which I am really looking forwards to, I think anything she writes will be just as good.
I would really highly recommend all of The Lunar Chronicles books, they are one of my favourite series so I hope you’ll like them all when you read them.
(Well if you got the authors name wrong I did as well XD I always have to look up Maggie Stiefvater’s last name to make sure I get it right)

      5. I read the Shiver series a looong time ago and I really enjoyed it. 😀 When I think about it right now I can see the problems that other people had with it. Personally I enjoyed it when I read it!
I saw that she has a new book coming out. But I want to read The Daughter of Smoke and Bones trilogy first.
I hope I’ll enjoy them as well! 😀

(Haha, I was too lazy to look up if I wrote their names right XD )

      6. I read it a long time ago as well, I remember I thought it was an interesting take on werewolves but it just didn’t stand out for me you know. I definitely preferred The Raven Cycle series.
Her new book isn’t being released until November I think, it’s definitely the later part of this year, so there’s loads of time to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I’m thinking of re-reading the series before it’s released as well.

      7. Oh I see, that really is a lot of time to read it! 😀 The only problem I have is that I don’t own the books and I’m on a book buying ban, so I have no idea when I’ll get to them. XD Hopefully soon as I am really interested in the story!

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Yeah I’ll definitely have time to re-read them as well before it’s released. Loads of people seem to be on or just finishing a book buying ban, almost makes me feel like I should be on one as well, I do tend to overspend on books every month XD

        Liked by 1 person

      9. Haha, it does seem like many people are on book buying bans! XD
I’m on one because I’m currently an university student who lives alone in a dorm and I can’t spend all my money on books. (No matter how much I want to do that!) So a book buying ban is really helpful to me. 😀
