Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. It was a free pick this week so I chose a Top Ten Tuesday topic from a few months ago; Top Ten Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read and Want to Read.
Fairytale retellings are one of my favourite sub genres of young adult books I have already read so many and there are more being released this year, and that have already been released, that I plan to start soon. I was gutted to have missed this Top Ten Tuesday topic when it first came around so I really enjoyed getting a second chance at it and picking out my top ten fairytale retelling books.
Top Fairytale Retelling Books I’ve Read
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Retelling of Cinderella
Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that I have quite a few other books I wanted to highlight on this list I would have put the whole of The Lunar Chronicles series on here. Instead I’ll stick with Cinder; a Cinderella retelling set in New Beijing with a wicked step-mother, a handsome prince, and a grand ball alongside a Lunar Queen, a deadly plague, and cyborgs. Cinder is the first book in one of my favourite series, definitely pick this up if you haven’t already.
Splintered by A.G. Howard
Retelling of Alice in Wonderland
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is my all-time favourite fairytale, I don’t think I’ll ever find anything that beats it, so when a retelling comes along inspired by Alice in Wonderland it automatically goes on my to-read list. When I read the blurb for Splintered I knew it would be amazing. Alyssa travels to a Wonderland which has been badly damaged by the actions of one of her ancestors, the original Alice, and she has to put things right again; all the while dealing with the cunning and secretive Morpheus, and the treacherous Red Queen.
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Retelling of Beauty and the Beast
This book is probably one of the darker and more beautifully written retellings of Beauty and the Beast that I have read. Nyx is a complex character, strong yet angry and smart yet bitter, she is incredibly well developed and I loved seeing her journey throughout the book. She was promised in marriage to a monster when she was born, and she has been training her whole life to kill him, but when she meets her new husband for the first time she instead finds herself strangely drawn to him.
Never Never by Brianna Shrum
Retelling of Peter Pan
I haven’t read many Peter Pan retellings, I tried Tiger Lily but it ended up being one of my rare DNF books, but when I saw the blurb for Never Never I decided to give it try and I ended up loving this book. Instead of showing us more of Peter Pan and his Lost Boys, and the adventures they had, we saw Captain Hook’s story. How did he end up in Neverland in the first place? What was it that turned him from a Lost Boy into a fearsome pirate captain, and why did he hate Peter so much?
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
Retelling of One Thousand and One Nights
One Thousand and One Nights is the only original fairy tale that I hadn’t read before starting a retelling of it. But even so I loved The Wrath and the Dawn; I found myself, like Khalid, enthralled by Shahrzad’s stories as she wove them each night to survive her husband’s wrath. Like Cruel Beauty this is a beautifully written story and I cannot wait for the second book in the duology, especially after the way The Wrath and the Dawn ended.
Top Fairytale Retelling Books I Plan to Read
Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Retelling of Alice in Wonderland
Anything Marissa Meyer writes is sure to be amazing, and the fact that Heartless is an Alice in Wonderland retelling means it’s gone right to the top of my to-read list for when it’s released. Why does November have to be so far away?
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Retelling of Beauty and the Beast
I haven’t read any of Sarah J. Maas’s books before but I have heard great things about A Court of Thorns and Roses, and all her stories actually. Everyone seems really excited for the release of the second book in this series so I may have to read A Court of Thorns and Roses before it’s released.
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine
Retelling of Snow White
This is another of my eagerly anticipated 2016 releases. There are already a lot of Snow White retellings out there but this one seems like it sticks close to the original tale with a few small differences; a princess with magic and a dragon huntsman among others. I haven’t read any of C.J. Redwine’s other books but this one sounds amazing.
Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell
Retelling of Peter Pan
After Never Never I decided to give Peter Pan retellings another chance. I’m probably not going to start Tiger Lily again but Unhooked sounds amazing. It’s not so much a retelling of the original story through another character’s eyes but a new story all together that reinvents Neverland, Peter Pan and Captain Hook.
Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis
Retelling of The Wild Swans
So while this book has mixed reviews on Goodreads I haven’t actually come across any other stories that use The Wild Swans as inspiration. I used to love this story as a child (I had a massive book of fairytales that I would read all the time and The Wild Swans was one of them) so to have a full length novel of the same fairy tale is obviously going to be worth the read.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of your favourite fairytale retelling books are or what you picked for this week’s free-for-all.
I’m now pushing several of these books to the top my list. Thank you for the recommendations. This week I did Favorite WWII Books for my Top Ten Tuesday.

That’s all right, I really hope you like them. All the books on this list are either those I have read and loved or those I cannot wait to read so I’d highly recommend any of them. Thanks for the link to your TTT I’ll definitely check it out.

Great post! I LOVE retellings. All of the books on your list are either ones I really loved or absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on. If you like Alice In Wonderland stories, I have read both The Looking Glass Wars and (especially this next one) Alice in Zombieland and LOVED them. You should definitely give them a shot (or even just AIZ) if you haven’t already. 🙂

Thanks. I’m the same, retellings are some of my favourite books. I am seriously excited for Heartless to be released, and I cannot wait to get around to A Court of Thorns and Roses, have you read that one? What did you think?
I LOVE Alice in Wonderland, it is my favourite fairytale. I read the first book of The Looking Glass Wars ages ago but not the other two so I definitely need to re-read and finish that series. It’s the same with Alice in Zombieland. I definitely need to re-read both of those series soon, I loved them, or what I have read of them 😀

Absolutely! Me too. Yes, I own A Court of Thorns and Roses, and while it’s not my favorite book ever, I definitely still highly recommend it. Awesome! I’ve only read the first books in The Looking Glass Wars and Alice in Zombieland as well, so I’ll definitely have to read those! Can’t wait to see what you think. 🙂

I’ve only heard good things about Sarah J. Maas’ work. I feel I need to read her Throne of Glass series before I can start A Court of Thorns and Roses however. I read The Looking Glass Wars so long ago, and never started or finished the second book or the series but I definitely want to pick it up again, same with Alice in Zombieland, because I remember them being amazing books.

Totally. I believe I have read everything S. J. M. has out right now, and I can tell you Throne of Glass is such an amazing series. Completely worth the read! I feel the same way about both. 🙂

It’s all on my to-read list now, which doesn’t seem to be getting any shorter 🙂
I’m hoping to get around to S.J.M books before June at least, and definitely before the fifth Throne of Glass book is released and the second Court of Thorns and Roses one. The Looking Glass Wars and Alice in Zombieland, hopefully before the year is up I guess.

Haha. My TBR has steadily grown since I got Goodreads. There doesn’t seem to be such a thing as a “smaller TBR”. Awesome! I really hope you enjoy it. 🙂

I had no idea a retelling of The Wild Swans existed. I love that fairytale I’ll definitely be looking into that book soon!

The Wild Swans is a rare story that’s not actually used as inspiration for retellings as often but it was one of my favourites as a child as well. There’s a character who’s backstory is inspired by The Wild Swans in Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay, I really enjoyed that book as well so it may be worth checking out if you enjoyed the original fairy tale.

I’ve only just discovered that fairy tale re-telling are a thing, which is really upsetting because like you I was brought up on fairy tales and I still love them to this day. I’ve heard of a couple on this list and they are on my To Be Brought list but some of these will definitely be added to that as well now! I need to find more fairy tale re-tellings!

I never really grew out of reading fairy tales, like you I still love them, so reading bits and pieces of them in young adult novels is honestly my favourite thing. There are so many brilliant ones out there; the ones I put on this list were just the five I loved the best and the five I am most looking forwards to reading, I can recommend some more to you if you like 😀

That would be great! Now I’ve found it I’m dying to learn more and find some more in this sub-genre, I can’t wait to buy some of these and get stuck in! I’m going on a book buying trip soon as well so I can look out for some of your recommendations!

Obviously I’d recommend everything on this list; the Splintered series are the best Alice in Wonderland inspired books I have read recently and while I mentioned Cruel Beauty in the post Rosamund Hodge’s other books, Gilded Ashes and Crimson Bound, are also well worth reading; her writing is so beautiful.
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor is a series I read when I was younger but they’re good books and an interesting take on Alice in Wonderland.
Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay as well; it’s a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale but there is a character who’s backstory is inspired by The Wild Swans.
There are a lot of people who loved Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, I wasn’t too keen but it may be worth checking out if you like Peter Pan.
Some others I really enjoyed are My Name is Rapunzel by K.C. Hilton, Enchanted by Alethea Kontis, Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross, Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis, obviously The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer if you haven’t read that series already.
Hopefully this is enough to get you started but there are plenty of others out there, I normally look on Listopia on Goodreads to find more 😀 you’ll have to let me know what you think of the ones you read!

Cinder is at the very top of my To Be Brought list so I will definitely let you know how that goes! I’ll definitely be checking all of these out and adding them to my goodreads list! I hadn’t even thought of checking listopa, but that will be my next stop! Thank you so much for these recommendations, I can’t wait to get started on them!

That’s all right 😀 Cinder is the number one fairy tale retelling I will tell anyone and everyone to read, the whole series is brilliant so I really hope you like the books as much as I did. I pretty much use Listopia to find any new retellings being released so it’s great if you want to find specific book, say those inspired by Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland or something like that, even just books inspired by fairytales and mythology in general. Happy reading!

I’ve had a look through everything you’ve recommended and some of the covers are to die for!! I am a massive coverwhore and stitching snow is just beautiful! They look really good and I can’t wait to finally get into this sub-genre! I’ll let you know how it goes, I’m hoping to buy it tomorrow. I’m going to finish the book I’m reading at the moment, then I have one more in my queue before I get to Cinder if I’m able to buy it 😀

I’m exactly the same, there are so many books I’ve started reading just because of how pretty the covers are, and not even just fairytale retellings, I put The Raven Cycle series on my to-read list because of the covers 🙂
I really hope you enjoy this sub genre, it is one of my all-time favourites so it’s always nice for other people to be as excited for these books as I am. You’ll definitely have to let me know what you think, and I really hope you enjoy Cinder when you get around to reading it 😀

I’ve seen the cover for the latest book in The Raven Cycle floating around lately and it looks gorgeous! I’m going to have to check out the others because how can I deny my bookshelf those beautiful things? Thank you! I’ll put a review up on my blog once I’ve read it, but I’ll let you know as soon as I finish what I think! 😀

Oh how I adore your post. I’ve been itching to read a bunch of fairytale-retellings and now, I could have a list I could go back to every now and then. I’m eyeing those Alice in Wonderland retellings and A Court of Thorns and Roses, simply because I loved the Disney version~

Thank you, and thanks for the link on your post as well 😀
Fairy tale retellings are some of my favourite books, and the ones I picked are, in my opinion, the best of the best so I’d highly recommend any of them. I love Alice in Wonderland so I am extremely excited for Heartless (Marissa Meyer + Alice in Wonderland = a winning combination) and I definitely have A Court of Thorns and Roses high in my to-read list as well. I’m the same I loved the Disney version 😀

I’ve been hearing about Marissa Meyer a lot. I’m especially interested in Alice retellings because I recently read Christina Henry’s Alice and I just have to read more of that sort!

Marissa Meyer is one one of my all-time favourite authors, I’d definitely recommend checking out The Lunar Chronicles series she wrote if you haven’t already, they’re all fairytale inspired books and all amazing! I’ve heard a lot of good things about Christina Henry’s Alice, I haven’t started it yet but it’s definitely in my to-read list; did you enjoy it?

Yup! It’s definitely one dark fairy-tale but I think you’ll enjoy reading it. It’s quick and easy, but has the right dose of action and drama to keep you going.

This is a great post! I love fairytale retellings and often find them hit or miss as some just really, really don’t do it for me. I’ve really only read TWATD from your list but I absolutely loved it. ❤
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks! There are some I found more miss than hit but there are more than a few that I’ve loved. TWATD is definitely one of the best, and I was actually surprised by how much I loved Never Never because I had never enjoyed Peter Pan retellings before this one.
I’m very excited for Heartless, the fact that it’s by Marissa Meyer means it’s probably going to be amazing!

I love fairytale retellings so I kinda make it my mission to find as many as I can. Anything on this list I’d highly recommend; I’ve either read and loved them myself or heard great things about them from people who have.
